Never again 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 11, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Concrete tee pads and nice baskets

Cons:

Too many hazards and places to lose your disc. No real defined fairways on many of the holes. Too close to walking paths, homes and streets.

Other Thoughts:

I should have known from having to sacrifice a disc on my practice shot when it anhysered into the marsh on hole one. Hoping that it would get better after that my small group continued to play and ended up losing four discs, spent about fifteen to twenty minutes per hole (except on hole 2) looking for our discs. This is not a course for recreational players. Wouldn't mind seeing what a professional player's thoughts are. No way I'm ever playing this course again.

Beautiful and Well-Manicured 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 6, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Concrete tee pads are roomy, properly positioned, and in excellent condition - most are brand new as of August 2017

- Baskets are high-quality and in excellent condition

- High-quality metal tee signs are mounted directly onto the tee pad surface, replacing the old etched-in signs

- Absolutely beautiful park and course, well-maintained and frequently mowed

- Plenty of trashcans encourage players to keep the course beautiful and litter-free

- Great layout uses elevation changes to maximum potential and features pedestrian bridges to cross creek

- Challenging due to vegetation, water hazards, hole-layout, and, of course, always-gusting Texas wind

- Fun variety of tee shots over water, through tight gaps, around blind corners, uphill and downhill, and a few ACE RUNS

- Navigation is pretty easy and intuitive, even without a map, as mowed paths and sidewalks indicate direction to next tee in most cases

- Water fountains near Hole #1 Tee

Cons:

- Course can hold water after heavy rains and well-hidden irrigation system can sometimes exacerbate problem. New 18-hole layout mitigates what was the biggest issue by using pedestrian bridges for crossing the creek. Waterproof shoes are recommended after any precipitation.

- Easy to get to, but pretty far out of the way for non-locals

- Restrooms for residents only

- Mixed-use park means several holes may require waiting on walkers/joggers to clear before throwing, and care should be taken when throwing around blind corners to avoid accidents

Other Thoughts:

-Expanded to 18 holes in 2017

-Set in very nice picturesque park

-Just about every hole can be birdied, but the course has TEETH - tall grass, shrubbery, water hazards

-Lower level and inconsistent players are likely to lose a disc or two

-Makes pretty good use of elevation changes

-Can play sidewalk-and-beyond OB or hazard for added difficulty

tough 9 holes on the creek 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 22, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

-excellent baskets and concrete tees, signs painted on the concrete tee
-practice basket near the first tee
-makes excellent use of the creek, it's in play on every hole but the first
-large stones added to cross the creek on hole 6
-variety of distances but mostly righty biased
-the trees and bushes have grown in a lot since the pictures on here were taken, there are a lot more obstacles

Cons:

-basket 1 is damaged, looks like it was hit by a mower?
-not a beginner friendly course
-the water will swallow a lot of discs if you don't have a certain degree of accuracy and confidence around water hazards
-looks like the course would be very difficult to play if it gets overgrown or if the creek level swells

Other Thoughts:

I really liked this course. If you're not afraid of the water it is a good test and makes fun use of the land. Hole 4 has a few too many trees in the fairway, spike hyzer is basically the only play. There is also a pond in play right in front of the tee on hole 2. Several holes make use of the elevated sides of the park putting the basket on a bit of an angle or the tee slightly elevated.

I feel bad for someone in the neighborhood who brings their kids here because it is really not a beginner friendly course. You're very likely to end up in the creek and it's very murky and deeper than it looks. But if you're not intimidated by the water hazards the course is pretty enjoyable so long as it has been mowed relatively recently.

This is definitely the most challenging of the courses in Katy. The tees and baskets are in good condition with the exception of basket 1. I would play here all the time if I lived in this area. Not sure how often the course gets mowed but it was in good condition when I played.

course for established players 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

i only played four holes because i did not come with a map
i think it is a pretty neat course once my game becomes
more accurate
has interesting fairways and you have to throw over a pond that has a beware of alligator sign
weaves in and out of a creek through wooded area

Cons:

was pretty wet the day i went
i don't think they mow often enough
i would bring a stick or one of those extension grabbers next time to get discs that go into the wooded areas
i did not see any snakes, but it's perfect conditions for them
especially a cottonmouth

Other Thoughts:

once i get good, i'm going back
i like it!!!!!

go to course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 9, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is my GO-TO COURSE. If it doesn't rain Pretty secluded for the most part. nice tees, nice baskets. Nice on tee hole sign . I was happy that the nine hole turn into an 18 hole it was difficult as a nine hole and now it's even more difficult as an 18 hole I like how the holes lead back to the parking lot before they didn't you had to walk out of your way to get back to the parking lot so that's a plus.

Cons:

There was not a course map at the beginning so any changes that were made I had to look up online as I was playing which was an inconvenience . Two or three holes were in a Marsh which was also another inconvenience whole 17 was 560 feet but yet it was still only a par 3. Most of those holes are atleast par fours there not that long in distance but the difficulty level of the terrain is a par four

Other Thoughts:

Some of the path ways and greens were marshy something needs to be put down like rocks or multch I don't like throwing my disc into mud and then having to retrieve it

Not user friendly 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 14, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

High quality tees and baskets. Everything is in great condition.

Cons:

I don't really like courses that exclusively run next to a river or creek. If it's rained recently, the course is unplayable. As mentioned by others, unless drives/approaches are near perfect, discs can be easily lost. The overgrowth near the holes along the creek is teeming with snakes and ticks, and the overgrowth makes the tees somewhat hard to find.

Water Hazard Heaven 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 10, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Challenging course, beautiful area, parking near 1st hole has a nice playground, tennis course for residents, and bathrooms. Also has a practice/putting basket.

Cons:

Lots of new construction, poor drainage after rains. If you land your disc on one side of the creek you may have to walk all the way around the park to get it for next throw, especially when water is high. There is only one bridge in the creek near hole 6. If water is low, you can jump the creek in some areas.

Other Thoughts:

Be mindful of alligators, water snakes, and mosquitoes. There are some benches to sit/rest along the way, but not much shade unless you sit in the grass.

Creekside Bender 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 25, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a nice and challenging 9-hole course with a chance to encounter water on every hole except 1 & 9. Excellent concrete tees with hole details etched right into the tee pads. Hole 1 starts back of the playground area and plays to the basket by the road that crosses over the creek on this side of the park. You have to cross the road to play the other 9 holes. Hole 2 includes a throw over the edge of a pond directly in front of the tee and your shot needs to curve to the right to avoid a massive growth of weeds to reach the basket on the other side. Holes 3 and 4 have throws that each cross one branch of the creek and are both good birdie holes. Hole 5 is a curve to the left and is mostly water free and only skirts the creek on the left side of the fairway. Hole 6 is the most interesting hole here as it contains two crossings of the creek and is the transition hole here. You must throw at least 200 feet or the creek will claim your disc unless it is a floater or you throw a lay-up shot. Be careful though, the weeds are particularly high here as I have lost at least two discs on this hole. I bought a hot pink JLS just for this hole so I could see it in the weeds. Also the creek crossing by foot on the second side is not so good unless you care to play with wet feet and legs. I had to go to the bridge further up to cross over and finish playing hole 6. There are stones laid to cross the creek here but the creek has risen so high at this point that it is covering them. Holes 7 through 9 play on this other side of the creek and hole 8 even crosses one short branch of the creek. Overall, an interesting course that makes good use of the land here.

Cons:

There are plenty of trash cans available, but you must be a resident of the community to use the restrooms as a special key card is required for access to them. The only part of the area that seems to be kept cut is the fairways and around the tees and baskets. The rough is very rough and has potential to swallow your discs, if you're not careful with your throws. Then again, there is always the ever-looming creek. Navigation can be tough with first exposure to the course but is easier with the second and succeeding circuits of the course.

Other Thoughts:

For this course, I would recommend some floating discs (Dragon, Wahoo, etc.) as well as some good mid-range discs as the holes are not all that long and accuracy is more in demand here than distance. And most important, play when the ground is as dry as possible, otherwise this could be a very wet course after a rain. The wind can be a factor, as well as most of the course is open. Good challenging course and well worth the drive out to play. Be aware that there are alligators in this creek. I don't know if they will attack or not but thought I would give a heads up on that.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 17, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-It was a pleasant surprise making the drive out here; this course had much lower expectations then what I had envisioned.
-The concrete tee pads are awesome, they are very long and have all the hole info etched into the slab.
-Most of the trees and brush have grown a TON from the pictures that are presented here. Also, the fairways are mowed regularly according to a local dad and his sons who come play out here often.
-The basket placement is very good. Most baskets are on a hill or down a hill. You will not see this much elevation in any other course in the Houston area.
-The baskets are new Mach5 and they have a reflector tape in all of them. Night round, anyone?

Cons:

-The creek could be pretty terrible if you are not careful with your shots. The creek comes in play on most holes.
-Crossing the street from 1 to the rest of the holes is a bit of a hazard.
-There is a long walk with no set walking trail from the 9th hole back to the parking lot.
-Some of the brush is way too long. Off the tee pad at #2, your shot is completely blocked by reeds.

Other Thoughts:

-When I came out here there were a lot of families and kids playing with ultimate discs. If you are an experienced golfer this could be an excellent opportunity to show them what a disc golf disc and the different types of discs.
-This is a fantastic course for this area. I think most of the people that live in the surrounding houses are young couples with kids. This course is a great way to get kids involved early in the sport.

Stay outta da creek! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 4, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Overall, a fun course to play. Most of the trees are in their infancy and not yet a significant factor so this course is not so much about how you get to the basket but moreso where you land that you stay in bounds and give yourself a putt. In that regards it reminds me of The LINKS (R.I.P.). Seven of the nine baskets are placed significantly close to the creek as to cause concern that you could land OB (or wet). It seems like most of the time the creek will be low enough that retrieving wet discs shouldn't be a problem if you don't mind getting your shoes wet. Given the open nature of the course none of the holes really favor righties or lefties. A map will help with navigation the first time as there are no upright tee signs and tall grass makes spotting the concrete tee boxes tough, but after one time through you won't need the map again. The concrete tees are nice and big and include etched hole numbers, length, and rough map with water lines.

Playground at the parking lot with porta-poties. Ample parking for the amount of disc golf traffic you'd expect at this type of course, but could get limited if the playground is crowded.

Cons:

The course is pretty rough right now. The grass/weeds are tall and mowing will be a challenge with all the newly planted trees. Watch your footing as there a multiple ankle breaking holes you'll want to avoid.

The course seems to be located in a detention pond area that will be immensely soggy or entirely under water after some amount of rain. Also it seems like just about every tree has a sprinkler head so the area could stay wet from that alone, or result in an unexpected shower for some disc golfers!

Hole #3 will entice some players to throw over the path/trail which could turn out to be quite dangerous to any fast moving bikes coming over the blind hill.

Other Thoughts:

SSA on this course is gonna be pretty low because all the holes are birdieable by a 1000-rated player and I'd expect one to average 6 or 7 down out here. Given enough time and correct watering they've planted enough trees here to eventually become a major factor and change the course significantly.

Cross the street to get from hole #1 to hole #2.

Be warned on #3 that being pin-high but more than 20' to the right will probably land you in pond water that doesn't show up on the etched tee pad map.

Not a destination course and considering there's nothing else great in the area either tough to justify a trip out here. But if you live in the area it's a fine course to play.

Wet, Solid, Creek-lined Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 25, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Holes range from 237' up to 401' and a total length of over 2700' making Flewellen Creek DGC a good length for the majority of players. Almost all holes fall under the same risk versus reward design forcing players to choose low scores or dry discs. However, the winding creek is still far enough away from most pins that only an errant shot should get good RHBH players wet.

The concrete pads are fantastic and include the hole numbers, fairway layouts, creek location, and distances all directly in the concrete pad. The information has even been painted (fairway black and creek blue), so you can easily read it, although I wonder how that might stand up to the elements over time. The park has normal amenities, a playground area for the kids and bathrooms. A walking path also moves along the creek, but it only comes into play potentially a few times. I also loved that they ended the course with the longest hole, where many players will need two good shots to ensure a par.

Finally, this piece of land could definitely be expanded to an 18-hole course. It may seem repetitious because holes would be more of the same, but who cares since these are fun, well thought out hole placements.

BEST HOLE/S: #8

Cons:

Newbies will note that this course has potential to eat discs. Go to Agnes Moffitt Park if you want to teach someone the sport, because with seven of nine holes lined by the creek, it could get frustrating and expensive real fast. Although I think the course has a good layout, the open repeated hole design might seem a bit boring to some players. Also, the transition from #1 to #2 is across the street, so new to the course players take note.

However, the biggest con of this otherwise very strong course is the low lying terrain. Unless we have another long stint without rain, this course will probably be wet and muddy most of the time. You just can't get around that everything drains to here, so weather will be your biggest factor when deciding to make a visit. If it has rained, go play somewhere else and come back in about four days. Ironically, the five million saplings that are planted throughout the course (especially around #4) each have a dedicated sprinkler line, so even when it's dry - they'll be watering.

WORST HOLE/S: #1

Other Thoughts:

Flewellen Creek DGC is an interesting blend of the same hole. Creek lined fairway to pin - repeat, but I honestly mean this in a good way. It's an enjoyable course, that makes you work just enough, has some risk versus reward, and birdies are attainable but few and far between for most players. I love the island hole effect, and besides #8, I felt that conservative play should keep me dry.

Bottom line is Flewellen Creek DGC is a solid nine holer with a decent layout, good distance, quality pads, and park amenities, putting it in the top quartile for Houston nine hole courses, and only rank behind Terramont Park, Mason Park, and maybe Jim Mazzola on my personal quality and enjoyment level. As long as you don't play right after a rainstorm, you will have a good time.

*NOT* Noob Friendly 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 14, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Challenging shots.
Interesting scenery.
Hole layout is painted on each tee.

Cons:

The small lake and creek have a penchant for eating discs that are even slightly off-thrown.
VERY muddy after it rains. (A recent downpour caused the entire course to be roughly 10 feet underwater.)

Other Thoughts:

Almost every hole involves going over or around Flewellen Creek. One even requires a shot onto an "island." (A bend in the creek that surrounds the basket.)

I'm averaging one lost disc per trip out here. Hopefully that statistic will improve as my game does.

Also, you're unlikely to want to play here if there's been any rain recently. Most of the baskets are along a creek, so it gets pretty muddy.
