Nothing around 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Big shots, good practice course to get out and throw far, good use of the obstacles there are. The elevation use is awesome the hay bales that used to make an island were a cool touch. The warm up area is big with a lot of space to putt and work on upshots.

Cons:

There are just about no obstacles, maybe 8 trees that come into play with a few mando poles. The holes feel very redundant with a lot of back and forth. The wide open being right underneath (downhill from) the reservoir makes it super windy also.

Other Thoughts:

Fun course if you're going out to throw far, learn new discs and make putts.

Stadium? What Stadium? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

To begin: I'm pretty sure this course isn't called "Hughes Stadium" the signs all said "Aggie Greens" however, I'm no local so don't take my word for it.
-Nice Tees, ample space for a good run up, pretty typical concrete pads for any good course
-For what they are, the fairways are nice, they have been mowed so there is a clear difference between them and the rough
-This course has two obstacles, hills and distance, both are used nicely, a couple shots play up and down hills, most (if not all?) holes are over 300'
-Very easy to navigate, Didnt have to consult the map at all, the layout is very logical
-Wide open, you can do whatever you want throwing wise here, if you want to work on your big forehand drives, you can do that, if you want to try and work on turnovers, do that, etc...
-No garbage laying around the course, this was very nice, garbage is one of my biggest pet peeves
-Fairways don't intersect

Cons:

-Tee signs give great distance, par, and hole number, however, the map is questionable, I mean, there isn't much to map out anyway, but it would be nice to have some of the apparent O.B. Labeled on the map.
-Baskets are very tricky to see, the beat of gray color doesn't stand out at all against the light brown dried grass and dust
-Baskets themselves aren't great, they are passable.
-There are only two obstacles on this course: distance and hills, there is not much variation the course is almost a little bit boring, just 18 baskets thrown about into a field
-Weird mando on one Down hill hole. There are two posts which I believed to be Mandos, but one of them was directly in front of the tee so you were forced to take a weird run up, not necessary at that point in the hole in my opinion
-You can see the mountains in the distance a little bit, but other than that, this course is not a very pretty sight, it is an open lot of land that was grabbed up by the parks department (or so it seems) which I guess is better than no course, but to be real, it is a field with baskets
-Dusty! My discs were caked with dust by the end of the round, kinda gross, needs cleaning

Other Thoughts:

If you have time, come and play this course, especially if you are on your way to horsetooth reservoir (recommended), but if you are in Fort Collins for a short amount of time, go to edora instead.

Go Long! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 9, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great for working on your long game. Throw whatever you want as hard as you can and don't worry about hitting anything...easy to navigate, plenty of parking,

Cons:

Lacks variety of shots and terrain, no epic holes, not much to look at. No shade! Course is a big loop so you are pretty far from where you parked as you make the turn (bring everything you need from the start.)

Other Thoughts:

Navigation: You can get a little confused as to which basket to throw to on a couple of holes. Remember everything is wide open so you often will be looking at more than one basket from the tee. Not a huge issue but it helps to take a photo of the map at the start of the round so you can refer to it if needed. The tee signage is pretty good overall.

Overall Course Design: This is a course for big arms. In fact that is about all it is. There are no finesse shots here because the trees that they planted when the course was built haven't had a lot of years to grow up and "do their job" of shaping the fairways. This course is basically the same thing over and over again. You can throw whatever you want on almost every hole for the entire round. When the trees get bigger they will start to shape the fairways and make each hole more unique, but that is going to take quite a while. The terrain is a big rectangle with identically sloped sides and a flat bottom. There are some holes that do take advantage of that elevation and slope (tee off from the top straight down, throw from the bottom to the top, throw across the slope...there are only so many ways that you can design around a uniform slope of equal height).
Layout of the course is clear with no crossing fairways. They were doing the best they could with the design of a course that is a big, dusty, empty dog bowl so you are not going to have much in the way of scenic beauty to appreciate.
Great for big arms. If you need to work on distance or play for money against your buddy who can't throw as far, this is a great option for you :). Because the course is all open it's not hard to figure out where to go. You can just walk up and have a look. No blind shots.

Maintenance: No problems with maintenance. The land was just a big recharge basin so they don't have a lot of issues with the natural plants or grass or erosion having an effect on the course. The lack of shade means that if you play this course in the summer Bring A Hat or you are going to fry!

Amenities: Portable toilet in the parking lot. Not crowded.

Parking: Parking is good here. Just park in the designated area, do some warm up putts on the basket and walk over to the 1st tee.

This is a city course so you get what you pay for (=$0). I review city courses a bit differently than "destination courses" like pay to play public/pay to play private because they are all trying to achieve different things. As stated before, there are some things about this course that make it useful for working on parts of your game, but as far as an overall disc golf experience there are better free courses in the area.

Other Thoughts:

This course hasn't been reviewed since 2014, so I thought I'd just say that it is still here. It's still a long course, but isn't all that technical. I like the hole on the back 9 with the elevated pin, kinda breaks it up a bit.

Pros:

Very accessible, rarely crowded. Have played this course MANY times. They are definitely making an effort to improve it. Hard to loose a disc here ESPECIALLY when properly maintained. Are getting better about keeping grass mowed and such.

Cons:

few trees or obstacles. Fairly repetitive, straight, LONG throws. I don't have a great arm, so it is VERY challenging. If grass is long it is EASY to loose a disc.

bomber's course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-new cobblestone tees, solid DGA baskets, good signs
-lots of distance, holes average almost 400'
-elevation present on the edges of the basin, a few elevated tees
-2 basket positions on all but two holes
-trees planted in the open areas, will help in some years
-holes 14-18 have better obstacles, more interesting

Cons:

-mostly wide open, few obstacles, no shade
-tall grass: good for optional OB, pain in the neck finding your drive
-lack of obstacles and mostly flat = repetitive, lots of long holes, and no forced lines
-a few long walks between holes
-needs a few shorter holes, at least to change it up
-closed during CSU football games

Other Thoughts:

Hughes Stadium is the definition of the average course. It is mostly wide open so the holes are long, boring, repetitive, and you can throw any shot you want over and over again. The saving grace is the elevation around the edges of the basin in which the course is built. There are a few elevated tees and a few baskets on the side of a hill. I did like hole 11, one of the shorter holes and plays across and down the side of a hill.

In several years the trees that have been planted will begin to have an effect on how the course plays. For now this course is pretty unimpressive and brutal in the mile high sun. Big arms will like this course and locals looking for a change of pace from Edora. If you're just in the area looking for a round, Edora is the place to go.

Play Long Grass as O.B. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 2, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice cobble stone tee pads. Good tee signs. Plenty of opportunities to air out your drives. Several holes with elevation change and a few mandos. Effort has been made to make the course more interesting like the option to play unmowed areas as O.B. One elevated basket with an island green.

Cons:

If you don't play the unmowed areas as O.B. then I can see where the course can be repetitive.

Other Thoughts:

The trees are all young so it will be a few years before this course matures into a really good one. I saw sprinkler heads around some of the trees so that should help. Play the long grass areas as O.B. and I think you will find this course quite a challenge.

Pros:

Nice new tee pads
The Tee signs are good
There has been some effort to make the course better with the addition of some mando's
Course is typical pretty empty so good place to practice

Cons:

The course is built in a flood basin. It can be very very wet and the grass grows fast because of this.
A lot of similar shots
Can be windy

Other Thoughts:

If the grass was cut more and not just in the fairways and there were shorts pin placement it would be a great beginner course. There isn't to many ways to lose a disc as long as the grass is cut.

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 20, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

New launch pads and baskets, good for practicing long drives, as others have suggested. Minimal vegetation because the course is new, once vegetation grows in, it should have more potential.

Cons:

Repetitive play, the course crisscrosses the field that it's set on so many holes are the same one played earlier but are down the hill that you played up on the last go around. The course is generally more windy than EPIC or other courses in the area because of where it's situated.

give it a few years... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 2, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is laid out across a large bowl, with a dirt roadway splitting it. Holes average probably around 325'.
* Lots of open space
* Finding the next hole is aided by a well-mowed field--follow the mow paths and usually you'll end up in the right place
* Clean and safe
* A few holes diverged from the sameness of the course (see the cons list); 14 for example had the basket hidden behind a hillock
* Great views
* A couple extra-long holes (600')
* Two possible basket placements per hole

Cons:

* A couple holes have proximity to the roadway, which can get pretty busy
* Same comment as a number of other reviewers have suggested--it's mostly the same thing. Either down a short hill and out a flat, or vice versa, or across the flat. Holes are generally straight-line affairs now, though that should change as the trees grow.
* Nice signage for each hole, but often it's not clear from the diagram which placement you're looking at.

Other Thoughts:

The course officially closes during CSU games. We were there a few hours prior to a Saturday night game. There was parking along the roadway by the entrance to the course. It also looks like there is ample parking when it's not a game day (the lot was gated off Saturday).

Most tees are brick stones (no mortar) and in great shape; a few holes are dirt still with piles of bricks waiting to be laid. There are a number of trees planted across the bowl, and for now they do little to alter the game. I figure in 5-7 years they will make the course considerably more interesting.

Avg Course with Potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Lots of elevation change (features uphill, side hill and downhill shots)
-This course has a lot of distance on it as most of the holes are over 350 feet.
-Good grip and rip course
-Since is a new course it has nice new baskets that are in good shape and catch well
-Hole 13 is a raised basket on a man-made pyramid that makes and otherwise straight boring hole a little interesting.
-Every hole except for two of them has two pin positions on it that usually varies at least the distance up a but.
-Bike rake near the first tee if you want to bike the the course (its not necessary but its a nice touch).
-Holes 14-18 have more character than the other holes (they have more obstacles, good distance and use the elevation will). These holes give a glimpse of what this course could be when the saplings they planted grow up a little bit.
-Nice brand new tee-signs (show the layout of the hole and the distance to each pin position).
-Very few people besides disc golfers in the area (except during winter-see cons)

Cons:

-Very wide open and almost all of the shots are straight shots (trees have been planted to help make this more challenging)
-Can be a little hard to navigate at first as on a few points in the course two tee-pads could be the next tee-pad, which leads to some unnecessary walks.
-The baskets don't have any numbers marked on them, which would help navigation slightly
-A couple of the holes have a bit of a long walk between them
-Get somewhat repetitive due to the mostly wide open holes and none of the holes force you to throw a certain line.
-The tee-pads are dirt for now and will eventually get rutted from use if they aren't replaced with concrete. Due to the wide open aspect the course doesn't provide much challenge yet.
-Plays course to a road on a couple of the holes
-The course is closed for play during Colorado State University home football games.
-If you are crazy like me and play with snow on the ground, holes 2, 4 and 5 are unplayable due to a sledding hill.

Other Thoughts:

This is an average course with a lot of potential. I can't wait to play this course when some of the trees have grown up a bit because then it will be a solid fun course. The last five holes are the best on the course and I will enjoyed them and they show what the rest of this course could be with a few more obstacles. Good course for players who like lots of long holes.

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Nice baskets. It looks like 2 basket positions per hole.
-Great signage at the start and on each hole. Other amenities include garbage cans, bike rack, porta potties, parking lot for disc golf only.
-Shouldn't lose a disc here.
-Good if you like to throw long shots without having to hit any lines.
-Tees are natural but sufficient.
-Some elevation changes, they didn't quite use these as good as they could have but it isn't bad.
-Some cool basket placements behind trees, little hills, rocks, etc. Hole 17 comes to mind especially. Others are elevated or blind. They did a good job with this part of the design.
-The course flows well, there aren't any super long walks although some of them could have been shorter and made for a cooler shot.

Cons:

-It is so wide open and long. You don't really have to hit a line ever off the tee and the objects to avoid on the fairways are small.
-Your discs could take a beating on the rocky ground here.
-They didn't take full advantage of the elevation. There couldn't be a true top of the world shot here but they could have some sweet downhill stuff.
-A noob RHBHer or LHFHer is going to knock out a window in a car.
-There isn't a lot of hole length variety. It is long and longer. I would like some 200-250 ft ace runs in with my 500-600 foot holes!

Other Thoughts:

This course is pretty average right now. It will continue to get better as the trees grow and as the local clubs/CSU disc golf take care of it. I would recommend playing here if you have a big arm or are looking for a distance challenge. This isn't the best beginners course but it won't beat you up too bad, it will just take you more drives to get to the basket. Edora is still the premier course in the area and Wright Life is a great place to buy plastic. Even with time, I think this course has minor design flaws that could be fixed to be a better course. It's not that any of the holes were bad. It's that they could have had more variety and more downhill.

Pros:

Nice new course with plenty of wide open shots. If you can throw over 400' you'll do well here.
Length is good for one with a gorilla arm. Most holes are close to 400' with some 600'

Cons:

Too open. You can see almost every hole from the tee of #2. WIDE open!
Trees aren't tall enough yet. You can throw the same shot over and over.
Tees: The tees are marked but you have to play the course once to figure out where to go next.
Long straight shots get boring after the first 15 of them.

A Couple Simple Improvements Would Really Help This Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 18, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Hughes Stadium course is set up in a large basin area of high desert scrub land. Currently there are trees planted (and being watered) and as they mature, the course will be ever-changing. As of now, they don't factor in much. The course features a great new course sign and map at the beginning along with sani-cans, both garbage and recycling containers, a bicycle locking rack and a practice basket. The baskets are new and on this course especially, it would have been great to have had the big numbers on top. This course definitely has length going for it. Only one hole is shorter than 300' and that is a problem in my eyes. I would have liked to seen a little more variety in the hole length.

There are usually two basket placements marked on each of the great new tee signs, either in the red or the blue position. The problem is I never knew which position the basket was in. Sometimes the difference is just a matter of 25 feet, other holes it could be 150 feet or more. I have a simple easy solution here. Drill a 1/4 inch hole in the blue and red squares on the tee signs. Insert a small bolt and waher through whichever color position the basket is currently in. Whoever changes the basket position also changes the bolt/washer. Player approaches pad, checks signfor baskets position. Simple system which works great!

# 13, the hole with the elevated basket is a great piece of engineering and a nice addition to the course.

Cons:

I'm afraid that things out here, like the baskets and wonderful signage, are going to get trashed before the trees grow in enough to change the feel of the course.

Also I felt the course had a couple of serious design flaws. Previous reviewers have mentioned some of them such as long straight holes, etc.

Four out the first 10 holes were almost exactly alike. That is 300' holes uphill to basket perched atop a hill. I quickly grew tedious with these holes.

You throw uphill to the # 3 basket. But then you walk DOWN the hill to the 4 teepad so you can then throw up the hill to the # 4 basket. Why not have a pad up near the # 3 basket and then have an epic 750' throw across the entire basin to the # 4 basket.

And then after putting out on # 6, you walk down the hill to the # 7 teepad. Why not place the # 7 on the hill closer to the # 6 basket? And then you have added a nice little downhill throw for 7.

Other Thoughts:

I'm no different than other disc golfer. I want to throw downhill. I want epic downhill throws. I love short downhill, touch ACE runs. This course design doesn't maximize the potential for more of these kinds of throws. It almost does the opposite and seemingly keeps you constantly throwing uphill.

As the trees mature, the nature of this course will change, but that will take year and years. In the meantime, the flawed design features should be improved to lure more players out here. Eldora Park is such a gem. It's going to take a tad bit more work here to get the players to come. The foundation of a awfully nice course is in place. Now, I think, it just needs to refined a little around the edges (hills).

Give It Time 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 13, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course sits right at the base of the foothills in Fort Collins next to Horsetooth Resevoir and Hughs Stadium where the CSU Rams play football. Everythign here is brand new and look brand new. There are plenty of trash cans all over the place. There is a really nice new signs by hole one. The city appears to be really on board with this course which is good considering what is going on with the other much better course in Fort Collins. The tee signs look really nice and the tee pads are consistent. The design of the course makes really good use of the land that is there. There is an irrigation system in place to ensure that the tree that are there stay watered.

Cons:

The trees are really small. The only challenge is the distance. The tee signs are not all together accurate (hole 1 is a good example of this). The tee pads are dirt tee pads, which is normally not a problem but they seemed to be particularly slippery for dirt tee pads. The only bathroom on the course was a port-o-potty by hole 1. It is occasionally difficult to figure out what basket you are supposed to be throwing at. There are a couple of places where it is not necessarily clear where the next tee pad is though there was paint on the ground to point people in the right direction if you could see the paint. There are two holes that play across dirt roads that are in place for access to the larger dirt parking lots that I would assume are for football parking in the fall, so it may not be good to play the course while a football game is going on.

Other Thoughts:

This course is one of those that you jsut look at and say, "man this could be good in 20 years when the trees all grow up." The design is really quite amazing and takes great use of the land but it is not anywhere close to many of the other courses in the area. If you do not throw far, this course could get really boring and really frustrating really fast. I did not particularly like this course at the present time, but I think it could be good. Everything seems to be in place for it to be great and the hope is there that the city will take care of this course until it becomes something special. This course officially opened today under the name Aggie Greens Disc Golf Course.

Very young course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 30, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Baskets are in great condition (should be, they are brand new). The tees are well marked. For the most part, the course flows very well (with perhaps the exception of hole 9 to tee 10). Definitely a long course, giving you ample practice for those long shots.

Cons:

There's no variety for the most part. Hole 1 is just like hole 3, which is just like hole12, 15, etc. If you like long straight holes, you'll love this course. For me, it started to get boring, "Oh look! Another long straight hole!". There are a few exception but for the most part, all the holes played pretty much the same. Currently, the tees are just posts in the ground. No concrete yet (I would assume they just haven't gotten around to installing the concrete tees yet). I can imagine cars with broken windows because hole 1 runs parallel with the parking lot so I would recommend parking as far west as you can.

Other Thoughts:

This is a brand new course that has just opened up. The trees are all brand new, there are no hazards, and no out of bounds areas to speak of (I suppose beyond the fence on 2 and 17 could be considered out of bounds). For the most part, the designer of the course did a good job considering the area to work with. Almost the entire course is in a detention pond. The course goes back and forth along the bottom of the pond (it's a BIG pond) and up and down the sides. The most memorable hole for me was hole 16. It plays along and over some berms that were created for telephone poles. There is a port-a-potty at the parking area but no source of water that I could see.

According to the map at the start of the course (and talking to one of the guys finishing up the landscaping), there will be a pond along hole 9 and 18. 18 is already a beast of a hole (over 600' according to one guy I talked with) and the pond will just make it tougher.

This will definitely be a course to watch. As the landscaping matures, the challenge level will hopefully go up as well as the variety. I don't think I will be going out of my way again to play this course.
