Woods, Rocks, Elevation - in a Suburban Neighborhood

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pulling into the lot of a tidy suburban neighborhood park, you'd have no idea to expect the densely wooded, short but challenging course that starts next to the basketball court

+ DisCatchers, very good timber-framed rubber tees and decent signage have been installed since many of the older reviews, so disregard comments about course equipment. But most of the comments about the beauty of the course and quality of the holes remain accurate. Fairways are well-defined and a lot of work went into clearing them through these woods

+ Tape on the basket spokes and arrow stickers on the poles to aid navigation to the next tee, but most are visible from the basket

+ The "creek" in the name first shows up on Hole #3. It crosses up by the green but isn't visible from the tee

+ Hole #4 is a 420' par 4 that's just a straight, slightly uphill shot along an old trail. But it's a narrow line hemmed in by a steep and wooded hillside on the left, and old stone wall all along the right. The basket is perched up on the hillside, and risks rollaways. The wall along the right isn't marked as OB, but it's worth playing it that way for the extra challenge, making this a really good hole

+ Great use of the terrain's rocky outcroppings for basket placements on #6 and #8. Unfortunately, the teeshot on #6 is blind (it's up on the rocks to the left. It's only 186', but the lanes are narrow and the basket is 20' above the tee - first time players will have to walk most of the way to see the location)

+ Hole #15 is a 222' par 3 dropping down 25' along a very steep sidehill with the creek valley to the right. The hillside is a boulder field, and the basket is nestled among large boulders. Opportunity for a very makeable birdie on a very memorable hole

Cons:

- The signage is informative about distance and elevation change, but the maps are just lines drawn from tee to basket, and don't include any information about major landmarks. Most holes don't present a problem because you can see the basket. But on some of the doglegs and dramatic elevation changes, the signs don't help the first time player

- Hole #7 is 226' and straight with a rocky fairway hemmed in on both sides by woods. There's a small pine tree growing up in the dead center of the narrow fairway, currently just tall enough to partially obscure the view of the basket. It appears this tree is being allowed to grow in as an obstacle - but in a few more years it will probably just be a gimmick to hate. If anyone cares, I'd vote to remove it now

- Hole #14 has two tee signs: 180' with a drop of 36', and an "Alt" of 250' with a drop of 57'. It really wasn't clear whether this was an alternate basket, or an alternate position for a single basket. I never found a second basket, so I'm guessing the signs describe two possible positions for one basket- but the signs don't indicate which position is in play. Not a big deal - but it was confusing an otherwise clearly-marked course (and who knows - maybe they're adding a second basket in the future)

Other Thoughts:

~ Rocky landscape and steep elevations make this not at all cart-friendly (you'll be dragging and carrying it). Rocky fairways will nick up your discs

~ Much of the course is low-lying and will remain wet after any significant rains. Deep woods setting makes off-fairway lies pretty challenging (lots of prickers)

~ The path from 3 to 4 is a bit of a walk (pass #16 to get to #4), and you cross the creek by stepping on random rocks which will likely be underwater after a rain. Given the amount of recent work on the course, I suspect a footbridge is planned

~ This course isn't particularly long (4408' par 55), but it puts a real premium on getting off the tee straight. It requires so much precision that being just a bit offline can kill you, which makes this course a lot of fun for replaying because the difference of a foot or two in your throw, can mean the difference between a birdie and a bogey

~ Hole #18 is a complete surprise: 274' par 3 across a flat, wide open grass field. Completely different from the other 17 holes. Very bland, but it's a birdie to finish the round, and it completes the loop back to the parking lot

Lost in the woods 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The land this course on is very nice. There are great elevation changes, mature trees, trails and a small creek running through the property. It is also very close to route 95 which makes getting to it easily if you are in the area.

Cons:

-No teepads
-No bathrooms, water fountains
-Baskets are the worst I have encountered
-some holes end at the same basket or a pole
-By far the worst part of this course is the navigation. The signage is horrible
-the course is not maintained

Other Thoughts:

Overall this course is ranked higher by others because of the lack of options in the area. It was fun to jog around the woods searching but really if you aren't a local you'll get lost because I play a good deal and haven't had issues getting lost before I came here. I suspect the people who made this course enjoy and don't mind if out of towners get lost.

Great design needs new baskets! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Millwood Creek is a small park in Groton, CT that you would drive right by without noticing if you didn't know it was there. Other reviews suggest that it's the best kept disc golf secret in the state. The course is in the woods behind the park and plays around a creek and an impressive rocky ridge. There are many memorable holes here, all tight shots through the woods, ranging from short ace runs to long dog legs. Basket placement was carefully planned, with several challenging putts playing near the creek, ledges and tree clusters. While the opening holes are mostly flat near the creek, while the remaining holes use elevation optimally. Many holes have homemade benches to pop a squat between holes. Great use of the terrain, and lots of fun holes make this course a great place for a fun round. Also a very short jog off of I-95.

Cons:

The baskets here are terrible. While the homemade baskets have a cool DIY look on the course, they have clearly not been able to stand up to weather and many are not in good position. The tone poles are incredibly unsatisfying. The natural tees are often riddled with rocks and roots and footing is difficult. One tee was just some elevated boards that were not nailed down and allowed for no run-up. The signs here are also in bad condition, many of them have had the writing eroded away. The maps are not accurate. Several fairways cross and several holes play the same basket. The course wasn't crowded when I played, but the design could have some implications for course safety on a busy day. The walk back from 18 did come right up fairways for 2 & 3. The course is also overgrown in many places and could use some landscaping. Limited parking here, no restrooms, and navigation could be tough here, especially with maps that are not quite accurate.

Other Thoughts:

This course is challenging and rewarding to play. It just really suffers in the bare essentials: baskets, tees, and signage. It's at least a three star course with one star baskets. There's a good round here and it's great that New London County has a full 18-holer. It's a decent road trip stop and a great course for locals. Not worth the 1 hour drive I made, but that's how it goes sometimes.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 10, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

as a local its nice not to have to make the drive an hour to play 18 holes. its maintained by local players so it a cool community driven course. not really throw biased. has some cool elevated tee pads. challenging for all levels of play

Cons:

yes, you might want a local to show you around because i prob wouldnt have found the whole course. there is dog towards 11 or so that can end your round quick so your advised to be quiet. after my 5th time playing there, i met scotch. nice dog but hyper active. bring a leash just in case and you wont be mad you did if you meet... scotch. can be muddy but generally not so bad you dont want to play. over lapping fairways could prolong things but i didnt have a problem

Other Thoughts:

although this is no wickham park or west thompson, it was a fun course to play and will surely be back. i enjoyed the challenge of the tight wooded fairways and didnt seem to mind the tone poles at all. i was able to play the whole course with a putter and teebird. next time ill have more space for beer.
early spring and late fall can offer some of the most accommodating conditions for this course.

Secret Groton DG 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great use of elevation and terrain
Most of the course is well laid out and marked.
Nice mix of short and mid-distance holes, and good variety of straight, right, and left doglegs.

Cons:

Lack of defined fairways
Only half the course has homemade baskets, the other half is just tone poles.
Muddy / Swampy - I imagine the bugs would get really bad in late summer
There are a couple of holes that are tricky to find / need more signage.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, a lot of fun to play. Its obvious that whoever set up this course is trying to make it nice. Could use a little more signage in some spots, particularly between 18 and 19.

Finally, disc golf in SE CT! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 7, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great terrain, nice use of hills & small stream. Most holes have a short and long tee, with lengths and route info marked on most.

Cons:

The baskets are a small con, as they are almost all homemade. The front 9 is mostly homemade baskets, while the rest of the course is homemade tone poles. They are very functional though and weren't a real problem.
The course is not marked very well, it is difficult to find your way around at many points. Some holes share baskets and/or overlap fairways.

Other Thoughts:

It's great to have a course in this area of the state. Apparently, this course was established in 1999, so it has to be the best kept disc golf secret in CT.
