not one I would play a lot.

Reviewed: Played on:May 30, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Unless you are a beginning disc golfer I would not spend a lot of time on this course. Its all very wide open.

Other Thoughts:

if you are a beginner then this course particularly the front 9 would be helpful. The back 9 covers the up and down hills of the CU's cross country course and offers very long holes which beginners should avoid. Also the tall grass on side of the back 9 fairways is not your friend especially on windy days.

The direction of the closer tee pad on #13 long tee pad (sign for hole) was a bit confusing as well leading one to possibly walk up the wrong fairway looking for it.

Tale of 2 9's 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 3, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cedarville University DGC offers 18 mostly open holes of varying lengths. There are two teepads for each hole, with good tee signs and even bag holders. The long pads definitely do add some distance, but little in the way of changing the hole characteristics. Instead of shorter straight/hyzer throws, you have longer straight/hyzer throws. I recall two forehands needed over 18 holes. The course, which starts near the athletic fields (front nine) and ends on wide open plains with just a few trees (back nine) is very easy to get to, there is ample parking (gravel lot across the road from hole 1, where the back nine is.

PROS:
Quite well manicured, scenic in fact. The back nine shares its space with a cross country course, with very clearly defined and wide fairways. Only a few holes offer any tree obstacles or shot shaping to speak of.
There are some mild hills, typical for this flat area.
Concrete raised teepads on both long and short tee positions. Not very long, but plenty of room for extra steps if needed.
A couple interesting holes on the front nine, #3 is a nice tunnel shot, though not long enough, IMHO.
The back nine, especially the long pads, will test even the longer bombers out there. There were at least 5 holes where you can just let loose with all you got (even if what you got is 450'+).

Cons:

The Mach V baskets seem made for spitouts for some reason. They look nice and seem quite new, but this one round saw the two worst spitouts of short putts I have seen in years. Both in the 15-20' range, both strong side and low with medium pace. Not sure if Mach V's always behave this way, but I am not a fan!

Very little shot shaping, 75%+ of the holes were just straight or hyzer plays.

No next tee signs, but online course maps help.

We played before the grasses came in on the back nine (off the fairway fields)--but other reviews have noted the potential to lose discs in the jungle that those fields become. I can see that being the case. If the grass seems high (you can tell from hole 10 teepad--then staying on fairways is strongly suggested.

Other Thoughts:

BASICS

Teepads--raised concrete, good condition, even on the shorts
Baskets--DGA Mach V's (I am not a fan) but they were new looking
# holes--18
Setting--Front nine--college campus near athletic fields, a few trees; back nine--pretty much wide open fields, with accompanying wind--OH in April. Fairly nice views overall.
Elevation--Mostly flat
Distance of holes--front nine, especially shorts--shorter holes, many birdie opps, even for rec level players; back nine-need a strong arm unless you play the course pars which are four for some of the back nine.
Free/pay to play, type of course--This is a private campus, but is open to visitors, but please be courteous of other users and on good behavior so other frolfers can enjoy the course tomorrow.
Ease of getting to--Very easy. Right on main road in Cedarville.

AMENITIES

Parking--Abundant, right near hole 18
Bathrooms--Not on course, but gas station is very close.
Water/food nearby--Subway, pizza place, gas stations
Clubhouse/disc shop--No
Benches--No
Trash cans--No
Bag holders--Yes--on long teepads
Tee signs--Yes--on long teepads
Next tee direction/signs--No, but none were too hard to figure out.
Wheelchair/cart friendly--Yes, but on back nine you would have to stay on fairways or have someone retrieve from high grass--there are a couple grades that could be tricky without help; yes

COURSE PLAY

Shot variety--Frankly, very little.
Layout, long walks (inc back to car), loops--Both nines are loops, so can bite off one or both. They both start and end very close to the parking area mentioned. No long walks between holes.
Ease of finding next tee--Not great, but nothing that should leave anyone guessing too much. All baskets are visible from teepads, which was nice.
General difficulty--If you can throw 275', the front nine is a birdie fest from the shorts. The back nine requires good arms, even from the shorts.
Mud/water issues--None noted, seems to drain well
Water or O/B to contend with--Only if you really botch a throw (I did once)
Difficult rough/lost disc risk--Oct-April, none. May-September, possible on back nine if grass is high.
Scrape/scratch risk--Some in the fields on back nine, but not if you stay on the fairways. Otherwise, none.
How busy was course/park--Empty on a beautiful Saturday, but there was a sporting event happening on campus which seemed pretty packed.

OVERALL

Fun/enjoyment factor, would I play again? Maybe, it was a scenic setting, and perhaps to work on distance on the back nine.
Who will this course challenge? Front nine--beginners, back nine--most people will struggle to get a lot of birdies, unless you can throw 400'+.
Is it worth a drive? Don't cross 3 states to get here, but if in the Dayton area...
Anything unique? Hole 3 is a nice tunnel shot. Hole 10 is a long downhill fun shot.
Would be a half star higher with--benches, next tee signs, trashcans, a little more shot shape variety.

I am in my 50s, 75 or so courses played, 875ish.

No longer straightforward and open, now a great challenge! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 1, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good quality pads and baskets. Signs are clear and detailed.
Long and short concrete tees for each hole.
Being on a university campus, the course is always mowed well. The new Back 9 runs through and beside the Cross Country track course, so fairways are well defined and groomed. The university has added a large parking lot as well,

Cons:

A private course on a college campus sharing space with a track and field facility, there are no restrooms, benches or trash cans. Pack it in/pack it out!
Watch out for track and field runners; they have right of way. If there is a track event, the place will be ridiculously busy and the course isn't gonna be playable.

OB in the back 9 is tall prairie grass. Keep an eye on your discs, if you are wild off the tee; it's easy to lose errant discs.

Other Thoughts:

This is an update to my original review from a few years ago. Cedarville University has added another 9 holes to the course, and it has changed the feel of it completely, for the better. It's a tale of two halves, with the front 9 holes being the original 9. See the original review below for a description.

The new back 9, on the other hand, is a real pro-level layout. Multiple true par 4s, 750-footers, some significant elevation changes, defined fairways with challenging OB, a few blind shots over OB, an island hole, and a partridge in a pear tree.

The back 9 is an excellent complement to the front; an advanced/pro player will be trying to birdie as many of the front 9 as possible (all 9 are deuceable) and then hang on through the back . Current course record is a 47, though a perfect round could hit double digits. A solo round can take 60-70 minutes, and a quick cycle of the front 9 only takes 30-40.

This is (now) a great course, that will challenge anyone; definitely worth checking out!

--------
ORIGINAL REVIEW (Front 9):
This is a pretty short 9-hole course. A few 'air-it-out' drives on wide open 350-400 foot holes, one 120-foot tunnel shot, and three dogleg shots < 200 feet. No significant challenges. OB roads or fences in play on a few holes. Advanced/pro players will likely not find this course much of a challenge. Recreational players will enjoy it much more.

Simple Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 30, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very nice brand new baskets.

Concrete tees

Navigation is pretty simple with map attached to this site. Direction arrows affixed to basket clearly point to the next tee.

Good mixture of forehand and backhand shots.

The one short hole in the middle of a "pine tree tunnel" of sorts is a pretty unique signature hole.

Cons:

Some of the tees were really short, typically the shorter holes, which stands to reason I guess.

Some of the holes were just a tee to a basket in the middle of an open field, very unoriginal and unchallenging, but if there aren't any trees around to work with, what can you do.

Other Thoughts:

I am an alum of this school and I am glad to see that disc golf has made its way to Cedarville. However, it's clear that the school just didn't have much to work with in the way of providing a variety of different layouts for the holes. There just aren't many trees around to work with. They did the best they could with the terrain they had to work with.

Bogie Free Zone 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Multiple tee pads make this nine hole college sports facility course a pretty decent 2x9 layout. Those tees are large, level, concrete, and clearly stamped as #,A and #,B. While there are no tee signs, the designers have a beautiful map and scorecard (with accurate distances) listed here on DGCR which you should print for a first time visit. The cleanliness of the map gives you a hint of how sharp and clean they keep the sports facilities at Cedarville. The course condition was awesome, even in the winter(s) when I've visited. The 24 chain DGA baskets with number plates look brand new. Almost everywhere needed, a simple next tee arrow points the way under the basket cage, to the blue (long) next tee.

The course has variety in a small package, and shouldn't frustrate even Recreational level players from the short tees. Not to say that it isn't possible, but an Intermediate player would have to really mess up to take a bogie here, even from the longer tees. You won't have to do a lot of technical shot-shaping here, but there is a tree on short #1 to work around, there are paths, fences and tree lines to avoid, and holes 6, 8, and 9 finish with some challenges. 6 is a beautiful pine lane ace run from either tee, 8 hooks right to left into a woodsy gap, and 9 hooks left to right from the short tee. The long tee on 9 requires a bit of a shaped shot because of its placement by the tennis court fence corner.

In all, Cedarville has a winner of a well thought out and excellently maintained nine hole recreational course here.

Cons:

There isn't a next tee arrow on hole 4's basket, and first timers will likely find themselves walking forward to hole 8, a little confused.

The lack of elevation and the openness of most shots means that most higher skilled players won't want to go out of their way to stop by for a look.

Other Thoughts:

The front page does state that this is a course for folks affiliated with Cedarville University, but it is not specifically listed as private, and I saw not a soul out there either time I've been by. I know I should have contacted someone before coming, but I was heading through to see courses here and in Springfield, and I hope they don't mind.

No signs as of yet to see where the next pad is.

Other Thoughts:

An almost perfect 9 hole course.

Short and Sweet (much like Mark Irving!) 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 4, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Although the course was designed within strict limits, the designers made perfect use of the space they were given. If you are not dealing with tree's you are dealing with wind. In most cases, you have both.

For me, it is a great course to take my kids on as it is easy to walk.

Cons:

No Tee Pads or signs. Should be something we will see soon.

Other Thoughts:

This is the perfect course if all you have is an hour but you don't want to simply toss a disc in a field. It is not hard by any means but it is challenging in its own right.

Nice course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A nice course. Not overly difficult. I love the holes that are in the pine trees. The tunnel shot on #6 is really cool. The layout of the holes makes you have to use a variety of shots (hyzers, annys, etc.)

Cons:

None, really.

Other Thoughts:

I love having a course on campus that we can play whenever we want. Thanks to the guys that designed it.
