OK 9 Holer

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 20, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Concrete Pads, decent size
-Baskets OK
-Signage OK
-Decent mix with a few shot shaping holes to work around a few trees / other obstacles
-Generous Pars

Cons:

-Flow a little odd, in 2 parts of park, jump from 3->4 and 7->8
-Walking path in play in #1 and #9
-Basketball court in play on #2
-Baseball fields in play on #5 and #7
-Shelter in play on #8

Other Thoughts:

City Park hosts an average small town park course in the eastern part of Mitchelville, IA. Weaving among other park activities, the course is split with 1-3 and 8-9 in the western section and 4-7 over around the ball fields across the street to the east. The western section has more trees to work around. #3 is a shot past a basketball court. #8 is a shot past a shelter. #9 is a shot past the bathroom building and towards another shelter. Over on the east side, #4 works around a small building, #5 is the long one with a basket at the south end past the batting cage. #6 is open. #7 bends around a very small ball field with s small ditch behind. Play here is OK and it would be a regular for me, if I lived here. Not bad for a 9 hole park course, but no big draw, either. No big notes to improve, they've done what they can with the space. I've got a friend who just moved here and I might play again, if in town to visit.

Play if park is empty 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

• Concrete tees
• Baskets in good repair
• Good variety of hole distances

Cons:

• Dangerous holes
• Confusing layout
• Missing tee signs
• Only one shot required: righty hyzer

Other Thoughts:

City Park in Mitchellville is comprised of roughly two square blocks of land. Within that space, there are numerous play courts, baseball fields, picnic shelters and a restroom building. Amongst all of this is the course, with its holes shoe-horned into the spaces in between. This makes for some problems when you try to play the course, the least of which being the confusing routing of the holes. The worst problem is the inherent danger built into some of the holes. I'll start with the hazardous nature of the course.

With such a small space to start with, coupled with all of the other facilities in the park, there is a very real danger of hitting other park users. This is most apparent on holes #8 and #9, where you are required to throw toward picnic shelters, where even the slightest errant throw could likely land in the shelter. This is worse on #9, where you not only throw past the restroom building, but are required to thread through some trees to get to the basket, which is only 30 feet from the edge of the shelter. Compounding this problem, the shelter is hidden from the tee.

Some other hazards include holes throwing over a baseball field, tennis court, handball court and sand volleyball court. Two of the holes running along the outside edge of the park feature the opportunity to hit a house if your throw turns over or ricochets off a tree or power pole.

Although less serious, but still a real problem with the course, is the confusing routing of holes. The first three holes flow well enough, but when you get to #4's tee you are presented with a short, straight shot. However, when you study the tee sign, you realize that this is not the correct basket. You're actually intended to curve around to another basket to the left. Some directional signage to indicate the direction to the next tee would make for less confusion for first-time visitors.

There is a dreadful deficiency of shot variety. Virtually every hole's ideal route is a right-to-left shot. If there is a hazard or obstacle on the hole, it will likely be on the left side.

In summary, this is an ill-conceived course that tries to fit full-length holes into a very small, cramped space. It would be better suited as a pitch and putt course with holes not exceeding 200 feet. As it exists, you'll never want to play it on a busy summer weekend.

Small and in need of TLC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 30, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tee pads and baskets in good condition

Cons:

Several signs were missing so you have to guess what Tee pad goes to what basket.

Very little in the way of challenging shots, most are wide opem. A few trees, playground, and a building are the only hazards to watch for.

Other Thoughts:

Pain to navigate without direction though the small course isn't big enough to get lost on.

Small, packed park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Located close to the interstate
- Good for a quick round. Took me 30 mins from parking to leaving.
- Nice small park with a few shelters. Located next to a Little League complex.
- Nice long, skinny tee pads.
- Good signs, good shape. You know where you're going.
- #1,2,3,8,9 may require some low shots under the trees, with #4-7 being opened up across the street. Nice variety.

Cons:

- Park is super small - too small for 9 holes probably. 6 would have been probably the right amount, but I can see why you want to get to 9.
- Many man-made obstacles in the way on this course, from ball fields, to tennis courts, lamp posts, and electrical junctions.
- #4 and #7 both intend for you to shoot around either a tennis court, or a tee-ball field. So much so, that the tee pads are pointed 90 degrees away from the basket, obviously wanting you to shoot around the obstacle. You pretty much have to on #4. You can shoot over the field on #7 easily.
- #5 plays along a couple ball fields - too close really. A high shot in some wind could get lost over the fence.

Other Thoughts:

- If other people are in the park at all, pretty much, you would not want to play this course. Too cramped, and very easy for a stray disc to get someone. If not for that, I would say it was the perfect course to take your kids to, and let them play while you have a quick round or two. You can pretty well see the entire park from anywhere on the course.
- I stopped here for a warm-up before hitting Maytag in Newton. Fine for something like that, but not worth an out-of-the-way stop. Although it only took 30 minutes....
- Still, very glad that smaller towns have courses like this for youngsters to become acquainted with the game on. Fabulous that the community has spent the time and effort!

Cramped Quarters - Just Too Small 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- This is a nice place to introduce people to the sport.
- If you have kids and want to do a little chuckin' this is a good place to go: kids get the playground for thirty, then dad gets a round in.
- Works your short game and you get to throw "low ceiling" shots a lot.
- The course is still nice and new:
All the signs were in good shape
The pads are nice
Baskets are super nice
- Ample bathrooms, benches and waste baskets

Cons:

- There's just too much going on here.
The park is too small for DG, it just is.
Why not pull these baskets and design a nice 9 hole in Thomas Mitchell Park just down the road (note: I've not been to TM Park but it can't be smaller than City Park, not possible.)?
- You will find the next tee pad dangerously close to the basket you just cleared many, many times. Again, its just cramped.
- Some of the tee pads point in strange directions in an effort to get you to play a safe line around park features, like you're going around a mando.

Other Thoughts:

If you're searching for a more enjoyable, typical or fulfilling disc golf experience, drive the few extra miles to Colfax and play there instead.
If you've got less than an hour to spend on golf, or have the fam with you, this might be just what the doctor ordered.

Not Great, Not Bad 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 7, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

*Good signage. The signs all pointed out where the next tee pad was located.
*Nice baskets. Brand new DGA Mach New IIs
*Course can be played in 25 min or less
*Good use of the limited amount of land available.

Cons:

*5 of the holes are on one block that is also a playground and picnic area and would be pretty much unplayable if anyone else was using the park
*Teepads for 4 and 7 are goofy. They both face straight ahead while the hole is a 45 degree dogleg left. Dogleg isn't really the correct term here since there are no trees in your way. There is a tennis court and ball diamond that comes in to play on those two holes for lefties but I seriously doubt anyone will throw straight ahead off of the tees. If you do throw the way the teepads have you lined up you will be about as far away as you were to start with. Most people will just go over the sports areas, which only requires a throw of around 200'.
*Not a lot of distance, only one hole over 300'
*Park hadn't been mowed recently and had pretty long grass. A lefty roller on hole 1 would have been an option but not with the long grass. I'm sure this varies throughout the summer, maybe I just hit it at the wrong time.

Other Thoughts:

This course is okay if you're in the area but not really worth a trip on its own. I live 25 minutes away and I doubt I'll drive over to play it very often.
I threw a disc on the roof of the large shelter area and there was no way to get it. I was told to check with city hall a few blocks away. They were friendly and took my info for when the parks dept gets a chance to get it down.
