Better the second time around 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 30, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Salem Township Park is located just behind the township office. It's a nice little park in a rural area, with farm fields surrounding it. The rolling hills are dotted with a few old growth trees.

This was previously a pole hole course, but sometime in the last few years new DGA baskets have been installed for all nine holes. These have a hole number on top, though it would be nice if these were all oriented to be visible from the tee.

There are a couple of tricky little throws here. Hole 6 is mostly open but with a thick line of trees just feet to the left of the basket. Hole 7 is a little RHBH hyzer that plays between a few thick trees to the left and a walking path to the right. Hole 8 asks you to thread the needle through a tight gap with trees on both sides. Each hole has at least one tree to contend with between the tee and basket. The only exception to this is hole 5, which is open but stretches 300'ish - a good opportunity for newer players to try airing it out. There isn't enough elevation change to really affect your round, but the rolling hills add a nice aesthetic touch.

There is a kiosk at the parking lot that has a park map posted on the back of it. The map is not exclusive to disc golf but does point out each basket and tee post.

Cons:

There is a walking path that meanders through the park, and across/along many of the fairways. A couple of holes have blind throws with the path in play (I think hole 7 was the worst offender). Be aware of your surroundings. Other than this path, the course layout does a good job of avoiding other park amenities.

No tee pads, and the tee posts are just wood with the hole number.

You aren't going to lose a disc here because you can't find it, but you might give up on trying to retrieve one if it gets caught up a blue spruce tree. For those of you who aren't botanists, that's the extra prickly one. A good portion of the trees in the park are the sort that your disc might get stuck in.

The course design has changed a little bit since the hole info here was added - possibly when the baskets were installed. That said, most holes are still very short. Hole 1 is probably about the 100' listed, hole 5 might be the 300' listed, and the others are probably in the 150'-200' range. That longer hole 5 has no obstacles between the tee and basket. Anyone above recreational level should easily shoot under par here, even considering that the first two holes are listed as par 2.

Multiple baskets are visible from most tees. Without tee signs/pads and with many basket hole numbers rotated away from the tees, it can be tricky to determine which basket to throw to without consulting the map. Especially if you're like me and forget where hole 4's basket was by the time you get to hole 6's tee.

Other Thoughts:

I played this course once last summer then stopped by again today. I enjoyed it more today my second time around. There isn't much here but it's a pretty park and fun little course. If it had tee pads and signs I would up my rating to a 1.5.

Locals and diehard baggers will find a nice family friendly course here. Everyone else can avoid the detour.

A Putt Putt Version of Disc Golf? 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 22, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Although this is a short course, it has a decent variety of layouts, and some of the holes are kind of tricky. Most of the holes have trees that you have to throw around or between in order to reach the basket. There are some blind tee shots, and the elevation comes into play on a few holes. There are also a couple of long holes, so it's nice that not all of them are short on this course.

Cons:

Most of the holes are way too short. Sometimes you only need to use a mid range when teeing off. These short holes make the course feel more like a putt putt golf version of disc golf, which is ok if that's the course's intention, but unfortunately it's still relatively easy for a lot of players. Some of these short holes have room to be made longer, which would've been nice because then they would've been a little trickier to play. A few of the holes are too wide open and could use some obstacles to make them more difficult. Maneuvering this course can be real tricky because it's not always obvious where the next hole is located, including the first hole. it also isn't always clear where you're supposed to aim when teeing off. Not only is this course short in length but its also short in that it's 9 holes long, so it doesn't take long to play. Also, it would be nice if this course had cement tee pads.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this is a good beginner-friendly course. It may be short, but the good thing is that most of the holes aren't real simple and straightforward. It's a good way for them to practice their accuracy and curving the disc, and there are also a couple of long holes that allow them to practice their long distance drives. The biggest issue might be the lack of signage because it isn't clear where some of the holes and baskets are located

Pretty Little Township Park! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 5, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Salem Township Park is a very nice little park sitting behind the library and police station. The park has all the usual things like BB courts, a nice children's play area, VB courts and a picnic shelter. There is a popular walking path which meanders around the park and course. There is also a exercise course with red equipment seemingly at each tee pad area. The tee signs are a simple post with the hole #, distance and par. Holes 1 & 2 are both pars 2 at under 100'. The targets are these 7' high posts. The top 18" of the post is painted yellow. Are you susposed to hit the yellow painted part? Or are you susposed hit below the yellow part? I'm so confused.

There some very generous par 5's here so eagles could be had. Most holes use the trees to either shield the pole or to force you to throw around. Navigation is easy. The wind was blowing pretty hard over the neighboring cornfields and I imagine that might be fairly common here.

Cons:

Short distances

Windy.

No baskets.

Lacks challenge.

Other Thoughts:

With baskets in place, this would be a fun little recreational, type course. As is, I think it's more of a novelty than anything. I doubt if it ever gets much play.

It is one of the easier bags that I've encountered on my travels around SW Michigan. Slam bam! Thank you mamn!

Bring your Frisbee 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 7, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

For the land they did a good amount of use with the elevation.

Easily route-able there should be no issue finding your way

great starter course, could play here with a putter and a mid and still do very well.

They have bathrooms in the summer and a portapotty for the winter

Cons:

Besides hole 5 I threw a putter on every hole. There is no real length.

Poles - they are placed nice but they are poles.

Lines- some of the lines seemed really weird to me. the first hole by looks seemed far out I threw a putter at 50% on a huge hyzer(around a tree) and I threw 75 feet passed it(I am a noodle arm)

teepads are grass and have random weird work out stuff

Other Thoughts:

This course is fun for what it is. I am not a huge fan of pole courses, and it felt weird that there was a bunch of random work out stuff by the tee pads. They have a pole at each end for tee and basket.

I liked it for what it was, if it was in my city I would go there, unless you are trying to rack up courses or in the area I feel there is no reason to go there.

Sweet shorty 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 12, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nicely setup for beginners and quick play. Short holes that can be challenges. Shots that take you around trees and one really good distance shot. Paved trail that winds around the course. Course is a loop that begins and ends at the parking lot. Solid poles as markers. Great use of the few obstacles available.

Cons:

Short. Nine had me worried about going thru the fire departments window. No teepads so i see damage to the tee area to be seen soon.

Other Thoughts:

Because both tees are poles you can play a loop forward and then loop back playing the tee poles as baskets. Nice course shows that disc golf is catching on if these small small towns are building courses. Big picnic shelter and good playground. Overall I really liked it.
Also its listed as being in Dorr..Its not. Its in Burnips. behind the library/townhall/fire department. Just a heads up.

Short and Sweet 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 30, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well kept grounds, solid posts, easy to navigate, short enough for ace possibilities

Cons:

very short holes, no defined tees, posts instead of baskets

Other Thoughts:

I was impressed at the time put into setting the posts, very solid. The overall park was nice but it lacked variety. There are just a few scattered tree hazards and most shots were just straight ahead from the tee signs. Most of the holes are really short which can still be fun but I found aiming at posts to be a whole different game than the normal basket and chains setup you'd expect. If you're in the area it's worth checking out but I wouldn't make any long trips to play it.

Tiny tiny little course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Aesthetic-- course plays through a multi-use park in the middle of nowhere behind a township hall. there are cornfields all around here so it's windy for sure. There are many red sculptures throughout the park that don't seem to serve a purpose other than aesthetic.

Poles-Surprisingly, all 9 poles are mounted in professionally laid concrete tubes. when hitting the pole, it sounds like a tonal pole. kind of a nice feature, let me hear my ace on #3

Map-- there is a map on the back of the garage near #1, but it's not really necessary

routing/nav-- relatively easy, the new tee poles are brightly painted and easy to spot.

Cons:

length/challenge-- this course is SUPER easy. I aced #3 on my first go through. the first two holes are sub 100'ers...

pars-- very forgiving and variable. I don't mind having some higher than 3 pars but this course has some par 5's that are easy par 3's. the first two holes (<100' each) are par 2's.

Other Thoughts:

Kinda surprised for a pole course how much work went into pouring of the pole "feet."

gas station across the road for fluids and gas...
