Glenn meet Lucille

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Glenn Elementary is a basic six hole layout playing around the school campus. Three fun holes, and three basic, flat layouts.
- #1 is the best hole on the course, and it's not even close. An uphill, 262 foot layout to a gap lead to a protected green. This hole could be found on a majority of courses and it wouldn't seem out of place.
- #2 is a nice let-er-fly shot. It's a downhill layout, throwing towards and around the back left corner of the school building back uphill to a basket on top of a ridge. Don't hit the school or get a disc stuck on top of the roof. This is a fun hole to throw multiple discs. I threw a lighter weight disc and just watched it glide on down.
- #6 is a fun, slight downhill, slight dogleg left layout. It's the third best hole on the course and a perfectly suitable ending.
- The other three holes are basic. You can use the field for #4 as a practice spot for field work.

Cons:

Zero signage. If it weren't for the UDisc map, no clue where to throw from. And, even that map differs from the basic map that's listed on here. The UDisc map presents better, more fun layouts on #1 & 2 specifically.
- For a school course, there was a lot of trash on the grounds when I played. Granted, it could be from locals. I did play a Saturday night at the start of summer. Just saying, I'd have issues if my kids' school looked like this.
- The course is spread out. You could easily add three more holes and make it a proper 9. You can easily add two more holes in the transition between #2 and 3, then throw one more somewhere else in the fold.
- This course may have a bit more bite than can is appropriate for an elementary school level. Only one hole shorter than 250 feet.

Other Thoughts:

Glenn Elementary is an adequate six hole layout. It would be better with nine holes. Alas, it is what it is.
- I'd rather play the first two holes three times each than play the other four holes.
- It's a fair amount of walking compared to the amount of disc golf. Essentially, you're making a loop around the entire campus for six holes.
- #3 is a wide open, straight layout. Sure, it's pushing 400 feet. But, where's the challenge? At least #4 is a dogleg.
- And there's #5. It's short, so it's an easy birdie run.
- This is a one and done play. If you live in the neighborhood, you may be playing here more often. Even then, you've got a good selection of 18-hole courses close by.

Good for field work 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Glenn Elementary has a 6-hole "course" -- or practice area -- around the perimeter of the school's property. Tee areas aren't officially marked, but if you follow the DGCR course map, you can pretty much figure out the design (or you can play safari from wherever you'd like).

+ I was surprised at how much length the course had. Kudos to the designers for creating a space with 6 holes with decent length as opposed to 9 dinky holes. Using the course map and guessing at tee areas, several holes were at or above 300 feet in distance. Playing safari, you could make the holes much longer.

+ Good use of trees and topography on holes 1, 2, and 6 for some added difficulty. Hole 1 has a guardian tree and the basket is situated on a hill behind it. You have to play an uphill anhyzer or flick over the tree to land on the green. Hole 2 is a long hole with the tee and basket on a ridge. Miss to the right and you're rolling down the hill towards the school building. Hole 6 is a slight downhill shot from the school road down to a green area with trees on three sides. More technical than holes 3-5, which are wide open.

+ The baskets are in good shape.

+ Plenty of field space here to just rip practice drives. If I lived nearby, this would be my field work stop.

Cons:

I don't imagine anyone would travel to Glenn Elementary to play it (not designed for that, obviously), but it serves its purpose as a place to introduce people to the game. That said, here are the drawbacks of the track:

- It's not really a course, per se -- just 6 baskets scattered around the perimeter of the property.

- The course starts on one side of the campus and finishes at the other. You're going to have a long walk either at the beginning or the end. I parked at the #6 basket and walked across the front of the school to reach the #1 tee area.

- I mentioned holes 1, 2, and 6 as pros. Holes 3, 4, and 5 are just open field shots (from wherever you choose to tee off from). The baskets are close to the tree line, so you can make the holes harder by teeing off closer to the tree line and hyzering out into the field and back towards the basket. Still, as mentioned, it's not really a "course," just baskets set up around the edge of an open field.

- Natural tee areas, mostly unmarked. (Hole 1 has a bench that I assume marks the 1st tee. Otherwise, you just have to guess based on the map.)

- When I played, the grass had not been mowed in some time on the side of the campus with holes 3-6. (The areas for holes 1-2 were fine though.)

Other Thoughts:

Worth playing here if you want to bag an extra course or if you need some field work or a warm-up on the way to Durham courses.

Would be nice in your backyard ... but it probably isn't. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Six nice Discatcher baskets.
Baskets are placed AWAY from school facilities.
Good area for field work.

Cons:

No tees, no tee signs, no indication of where to tee from.
Long walks between most holes, although good for getting steps in!
Half of the baskets are at the edge of the open school field.

Other Thoughts:

Definitely a practice area. The baskets are spaced enough to create decent holes, so pick a tee spot and go for it.
Actually, 3 of the baskets would make pretty good holes, the first one (starting on the east side of the school, is halfway up a hill, by a couple of trees (I teed near the building and made it an uphill hole). After a short walk through some trees, you are elevated above the school, with the second basket on the same ridge, but separated by a lowered school road, don't grip lock one onto the school roof!
The third, fourth and fifth baskets are around the outer edge of the school field, pick a tee, throw a big hyzer drive and move on. The last basket offers a tee from the school road, downhill to the basket in a narrowing field surrounded by trees.
This could be made into a decent nine-hole course, but with four eighteen hole courses in Durham, I don't see that happening anytime soon.

It's a Practice Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 17, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

But it's a really nice practice area. I popped in here en route to Valley Springs and was pleasantly surprised with the potential of the area. True, there are no tees. Isn't that really better for this type of area? You can "tee off" from anywhere.

It's six holes scattered around a series of fields with no hole design at all. So you are free to play safari, and by safari, I mean practice any type of shot you want. Bring all your discs: you aren't likely to lose any. Throw them all: you aren't going to be interrupted. Bring you're new discs: haven't you been waiting to see how they fly?

What Glenn School has going for it that similar courses that I've seen don't is a bit of elevation. It has three holes in an open field. I wouldn't expect fewer than that. But the other three holes provide different looks which allow you to work with elevation. The first hole is on a the crest of a small hill. The second is on the edge of a long ridge. The sixth is at the end of a downhill tunnel.

And the big field, which houses three of the holes? Even big arms should be able to stand at one end and toss toward the far basket without fear of going too far. So it's a driving range too.

Obviously this isn't a course in the traditional sense. But as practice area, it's got a lot going for it.

Cons:

Right, well. There are no tees. There are no signs. There is no layout persay. I think we've established it's not a course as we would often use the term.

Other Thoughts:

What's really great about the lack of tees is the ability to introduce newcomers of various ability/strength levels to the game and come up with tees of lengths that would suit them.

Practice area in Durham 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

6 baskets in great condition. Hole 1 is set before an interesting drop off.
Several areas for potential new holes and improvements.
3-5 are wide open to practice drives.
It is a good area to introcude kids to the sport. you can make the tees where ever you wnat depending upon the age of the kids, which is main purpose of this course.

Cons:

Can not be used during the day and a sign says they are not to be used after hours.
1 and 2 were off by themselves and too a while to find.
No tees, just a safari course. You can not play from Basket to Basket, it is just not feasible with how the course is set up. Only 3-5 can be played this way. You really have to make up your own tees.

Other Thoughts:

TEES, the biggest thing needed here!

I would add a short hole between 1 and 2 and add a hole in between where 2 and 3 are by either cleaning out the trail or playing to the right of the trail to 3. Add a third new basket somewhere between 3 and 5 and this would be a decent 9 hole course.

Applaud the effort, but... 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 27, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

DISCatcher baskets are in great condition.
It utilizes some elevation on the first couple of holes - in fact they were enjoyable holes.

Cons:

There are no markings for the course, so unless you are playing with someone who knows the layout, it is guesswork on where the tee areas are. I saw a worn-out area for #2 and assumed a rock was the tee area for #3.
There is no variety to the fairways - open and straight shots.
Not in the best part of town.
Course flow - ending at #6 leaves you on the opposite side of the school.

Other Thoughts:

I cannot imagine this course getting much traffic, so the opportunity to play safari golf and create some solid holes are there. I applaud the effort for installing baskets at an elementary school, since Charlotte seems to be doing this often, promoting the sport to a younger generation. Being that the course is on elementary school grounds, it may only be played outside of school hours or on weekends. The #1 basket is to the west side (left if facing the front of the school) of the school on a hill and the course wraps around the back of the school property, ending on the east side of the school grounds.
