Where wind and hyzers meet

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 18, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

-themed concrete tees
-tee signs for all holes
-well maintained grounds
-plenty of parking, but competing with baseball fields
-varied distances, none that I would consider long holes

Cons:

-very few actual obstacles beyond tall grass and bamboo so most shots end up being hyzers
-the game is at the mercy of the wind since there is very little protection
-the tee pads are ovals. It seems to be a theme in the park design, but they are extremely annoying to throw from
-the tee signs give very little useful information and distances seem to be inaccurate

Other Thoughts:

This course is far from my favorite. While the theme of ovals in park design, tee pad shape, and maps are cohesive and consistent, it is just a pain to throw from the abnormal tees and it would be nice to have more accurate information on the signs. Some of the bamboo has recently been cut and burned, but a lot remains. The lack of trees creates holes that are easiest to send hyzer bombs off the tees, and the wind will fight you the whole way. It's not that bad a course, there's just not much good about it either.

Open Course Frustrated by High Grass 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Heritage Park is one of the great family parks on the west side of Cincinnati. With lots of space and some beautiful views, it is a great place to bring the family on a nice day and you may just spend the entire day there. The course itself isn't anything special but I still find myself going back regularly for a relaxed round that feels like field work.
Pros:
-As mentioned, the park is great. Set on a large flat plain bordering the Great Miami river there are ball fields, a large dog park, ample walking paths, and trails by the river. There's plenty of parking, a playground and a shelter by hole 1 as well.
-There is a portable bathroom just feet from hole 1
-Practice basket by hole 1
-Teepads are concrete and have a painted foot foul like that most everyone ignores
-Holes range from 200'-400' with a total distance of 5,454' and an average length of just above 300'
-The course includes several bamboo patches that force shot shapes and create a break from the monotony of wide open fields
-Teepads include mapped OB. Most people don't play it, but if you want to create a real challenge play the OB. It's a totally different course when you do.
-Baskets were solid, older Chainstar baskets
-Course drains well. It's generally considered one of the first playable courses in the tri-state after prolonged rain.
-A few holes break from the field and duck briefly into the tree line creating a few gaps that have to be hit.
-Great course for families or new players

Cons:

Cons:
-In the end this course really only offers one thing, open shots in a flat field. While a few holes break the mold, the vast majority of holes feel the same.
-I can't believe I've made it this far without mentioning the rough. The rough is really bad, especially the later the year goes on. It seems like the park mows it in late March then leaves it untouched for the entire year. By August you almost can't play a round without finding yourself waste high in grass and stinging plants. Wear pants and check for ticks! Some fairways play over the grass while most others play along it. It certainly creates some risk/reward but it gets annoying quick.
-The bamboo groves are big and thick. They will swallow a disc quickly. Fortunately, it's surprising easy to get in them to search, but often a disc will get caught up at the tops so don't just look down.
-Course often plays near a walking path and many a normal hyzer would carry over the path so be sure to check before you throw.
-This is a popular park and people don't always know they're on the disc golf course. Be prepared to kindly ask someone to move off the fairway.
-Because the course is so open it is not always clear what basket you're throwing at or where the next hole is. Be sure to consult the tee sign or UDisc.
-Pars are way off. Course is listed as a par 78 or 80 (UDisc keeps changing and I've not looked as the signs closely) but it should be played as a par 3.
-No legitimate par 4s.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoy Heritage and I keep going back. I consider it a great place for field work. Instead of heading to a local football field I can go here and throw at baskets for basically the same experience. That being said, I do not go here if the grass is up. I find myself spending too much time wading through the high grass.
Overall, this is a pretty average course but it serves a purpose in introducing new players and family to the sport and still providing enjoyment for the experienced player.

Mostly open and boring, but well maintained 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The concrete tee pads are nice, signage is accurate, and the course is well maintained. The baskets are in great shape. There are a couple of holes on the back 9 that go into and out of wooded areas near the river, but you're far enough away from the water to avoid losing a disk in there.

Cons:

There are few mature trees throughout a large majority of the course - instead, you'll find large grassy patches that swallow up discs, only to be found when they mow that stuff down in late fall. Since the park sits right next to the river, the wind can be pretty brutal. My biggest problem with this course is the entry fee...every now and then (especially on nice days) there will be a Colerain Township employee or volunteer sitting at the entrance to the park collecting admission. You can get in for $5, or buy an annual pass for $10. They only accept cash, and I've been told by the guy that even he doesn't know which park he'll be working at on a given day. So, if you want to play the course, make sure you have cash on hand, otherwise you may not be able to get in. I've turned around and went elsewhere on multiple occasions because I typically don't carry cash and its easier to go to another course than to drive to an ATM.

Other Thoughts:

I play this course relatively frequently because it's close to home. It's a pretty boring course with few obstacles, but is good for practicing your drive since many of the holes are so open. I've lost more discs here than I care to admit, because walking through 6+ ft. tall grass searching for a disc in the baking sun is not typically my idea of fun. I've seen several reviews mention the gunshots off in the distance - there is a gun club located a few miles down the road. You'll likely hear some gun fire while playing, but it's far enough away that it's never disrupted my game. Contrary to another reviewer's claim, you won't find any stray bullets from the gun range lying around at the park.

Open and boring 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 hole course set in an open field behind some baseball diamonds.

Navigation is pretty simple, as all the holes are out in a flat field, without any obstructions. Tee signs were good (although one was missing). Distance, hole number...solid.

One tee pad per hole, but they were very nice concrete. Plenty long, plenty wide, with a foul line and small overrun area. The tee pads were probably the best part of the course.

Decent variety of distances on the holes. This is about all I can come up with for pros in the actual play of the course. A couple holes venture ever so slightly into the woods, and poke back out, but nothing to get excited about.

Cons:

Blah. Double blah. This course is basically just a bunch of baskets in a field, with some occasional big, annoying shule patches. For smaller arms, the shule will force you to go around. For bigger arms, you can go over the shule. For every arm, putting your disc in crazy shule in the middle of a field and having it hide discs sucks. Granted, it's open enough that you really SHOULDN'T end up in there, it's still a huge pain in the ass. Just plant some damn trees.

Apparently, this is P2P. We were there at about 6:30am, and didn't notice anything signifying this. I would advise against anybody actually paying to play this course. Spend the money on gas and go somewhere else to throw frisbees.

There's a running/walking trail that meanders through the course, which could be a pretty big safety hazard. Even at the buttcrack of dawn, there were several people on the trail. I imagine it only gets more congested later in the day.

Other Thoughts:

I suppose if you have a big chunk of unused land, and 18 baskets, there's worse ways of using it than making a course. It's a damn shame they couldn't use the wooded area behind the parking lot, and move the dog walking back out to the open field.

Kind of a bummer of a course, but if I lived right next door, the solid tees would at least make it a fun place to range discs, or ace run. Baggable, but no real replay factor.

When the weeds are cut, there is no chance of losing a disc.

Concrete tee pads and signs.

Nice park.

Cons:

One of the most boring 18 hole courses I've ever played except for two holes near the woods. Most of the holes you are just throwing thru a field.

And then you have to pay to play this course! No thanks.

Other Thoughts:

I don't recall ever paying to play though. Must not have noticed that sign!

This course would be a good one to work on your drives and try out new discs.

Heritage Park DGC 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 27, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Very good flow from hole to hole
- Small mixture of open field, over rough, and into/ out of wooded shots

- Flat and quick to play layout

Cons:

- Have to buy 10$ parking pass for year (Colerain Township Parks)
- Part of year without weeds makes it a very simple course
- Highly trafficked park
- Easy to lose discs in rough

Other Thoughts:

I give it a 3 cause I don't love it, but I don't hate it. There is gunfire at times which can mess with putting, but it's no different than hearing an airplane go by, or any other typical disturbances. It can get very muddy as it is on a flood plain. The layout is nice, when the rough is there. When there is rough it is a fun/ok course to play as their is a chance to lose a disc making it different from the usual wooded traps, it's tall zebra grass. I like that a couple holes you have to throw into the woods, and a couple out, it does have a nice mixed up design. Some holes are too easy however as you essentially just throw across a field to a basket you can easily see. This course is the perfect definition of a good course. Will it really challenge you? Probably not. It is a good change up from other local courses? Yes.Great for beginners to learn on and Great for people of higher skill who just want to take a break from more serious play and go out and throw an easy round

Hyzers (& Annies) ‘Round the Hay 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 9, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The thing you need to know most about Heritage Park DGC: has the hay been mown? This course is completely different from mid-fall to mid-spring. When they cut the long grasses, 2/3rds of the holes become open shots, with practically no chance of losing a disc. You have to decide if you like the challenge of keeping it out of the stuff (in the summer), or like me (a relative noob), actually prefer this course mown.

This course is set in a nice, level floodplain, with other sports fields and the obligatory jogging path winding around, adding some optional OB challenges, if your shots go really wild. There is a cool looking playground by the parking lot, and a new deck off the path, overlooking the stream on the left after hole 13. Most of the course has good signage, there's a good map kiosk, at least one beverage machine, trash baskets here and there, and one bench on the path near the #9 tee, if you need a break.

This course has some of the neatest concrete tees I've seen: they're oval/teardrop shaped, with a foul line marked, allowing you to follow through without stepping off the front. The baskets are almost all 24 chains, and catch very well (#11 and #16 have only 18 chain baskets).

If you prefer some obstacles, there are permanent shrubs to work around on 2, 4, 7, 9 & 15 (stay outta them bushes!), holes 12 & 16 shoot into the woods, and holes 13 & 17 require tight tee shots out of the woods.

Cons:

Every time I've been here, there's a Civil War re-enactment going on just across the water. Well, maybe it's just a shooting range, but if you feel at all skittish about a near-constant barrage of gunfire nearby, you might be a little distracted here.

There's no elevation to speak of (wait, you cross a drainage ditch on hole 11!).

The course can feel a little ho-hum and bland in the winter (but on the bright side, as of 12/9/12, they have not pulled the baskets for the winter, so there's a course here - and that is good).

Other Thoughts:

The course design flows fairly well, with only one walk out into the field between 13 & 14. In the peak of the summer, I'm sure most holes are forced blind hyzers and annies. It would be interesting to analyze the change in average scores, depending on the season.

The current pictures show 2-3 foot tall bushes, and do not indicate the tall grass potential very well. Since those bushes are now 6-8' high, and very thick, some aspiring photographer needs to update the course pics with one set for the winter, and one set for the summer.

Edit 9/18/14: Having just played Heritage for the first time with the grasses in their seasonal 6 foot plus height, I must say it IS a more challenging course. You'll want a spotter if you go for the riskier lines, and you may have to settle for more threes if you play smartly in all the fairways. The angles of the teepads become more obvious (laid out by a rhbh player?). And the terrible position of the tee sign to the right front corner of hole 6 stands out even more. Also, there is word that the park wants $5 for a day pass (slightly more for all season), but they don't seem to have a collection booth, so take that as you may.

Beginner Course or a Quick Play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Based purely on the holes I'd give this course a 2.5 (Decent/Typical) but I gave it a bump for its good condition.

Par is very generous so is friendly to beginners, but for anyone else you should play this as a par 3 course. The signs, pads, and baskets are in great shape with the signs being informative and pointing the way to the next tee. I didn't have any problem navigating the place on the first go 'round. Course is flat without much water coming into play so you won't lose a disc outside the grasses (see below). Holes are in a good arrangement so you start and end at the same place and holes do not interfere with each other.

Cons:

I am not a big fan of "field courses" and this one falls squarely into that category: lots of wide open holes on flat ground, very little use of the limited woods and water. The hole layouts are fairly unimaginative with mostly left-to-right and straight throws. Bring either your forearm shot or some understable discs for a RHBH thrower. Challenge is added to the course by having large areas of tall grasses (when in season) that you need to curve your disc around. While this does make for a better round it also makes for a more frustrating one since finding your disc can be a royal pain. There are many paved walking paths weaving through the course with plenty of runners and families milling about without an awareness for discs.

Other Thoughts:

No long holes here, will be fairway driver and midrange for intermediate and up players. There is only one set of tee pads and I believe the basket positions do not change.

Nice park, well maintained, plenty of other activities to do here. The ball fields looked great. This would be a great course to have a picnic by the river before or after the round.

Heritage 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 18, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very well maintained and new park. Great signs and tee pads. The river scenery is nice. You can work on decently long drives and interesting putts. It plays in about an hour and fifteen minutes so its great for a quick, fun round. You can score here.

Cons:

If it's a windy day it's a major factor since it's so flat (I've walked off more than once because of this). Walking paths are in play and can be busy at times. 11-14 watch out for itchy bushes in the rough. When the rough is high it is really high so you'll need a spotter on some holes certain times of year.

Other Thoughts:

This course is definitely fun. I enjoy playing here fairly often even though I wouldn't call it a favorite course. All holes can be played as 3's for the intermediate player, but that's not saying they are super easy holes. This course is different depending on the season.
- Spring: The rough obstacles aren't high yet since they get cut down in the fall. The courses plays easier this time of year.
- Summer: Not much shade here so it can be very hot on a sunny day. The rough gets really high as the summer goes on so it makes the course a lot harder and increases the chance of losing discs.
- Fall: The rough can still be very high, but this is the time of year when they cut it down so you'll see a change in the course dynamic once it's cut.
- Winter: Normally they take out the baskets in case of flooding so you may be going to an empty course (although this year it sounds like they never took them out).

Heritage layout nice experience 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 6, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The park itself is a 4, well maintained. The tight out of bounds play will no doubt change seasonally with the vegitation growth. We played in early October for our first look at the course and the tall grass islands kept us checking out where the baskets actually were. The map and course navigation is much better than others I'm used too. We did notice some changes to the course as far as the vegitation/grasses being mowed differently as depicted by again the helpful course maps at each tee. The concrete tee pads are fairly long and flush with the ground, a real plus.
Although it's flat, there was thought put into making this course more than a blank open field by using the tall grass and other plants to navigate around. I enjoyed it.

Cons:

Par is out of whack as 81 is very generous. I can see the reasoning with the tight basket placement. Beginners, playing non-disc golf frisbees would probably shoot 81. I'd say that the course would be better served by having a 15'-20'-25' circle around the baskets because 10 of them on this day were but 10' from OB. I'd play it as a par 3 course, disreguard the OB around the basket and then you'd have a challenge.

Other Thoughts:

This course could be bland when the vegetation is out of season. Although it could be a great place to work on your full drives at the same time. There are but 3 holes with trees in the tee to basket line. There are pedestrian paths and we saw maybe 3 other golf groups in our time on the course so crowding wasn't a factor. Not far from Northgate Mall and I-275 for you Cincinnati locals. I'll make it part of my rotation of area courses after the experience. I've played Mt.Airy, Harbin, Winton Woods, Woodland Mounds in this area and Heritage was a welcomed change of scenery.

Pretty interesting course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The cement tees are really nice. I actually like the shape of them because I am use to seeing just a plain Square blocks, this was interesting to play on.

It's a really clean place to play. I was amazed at how clean it was because I only saw one bottle and it was in the woods. Other than that, I didn't see anything on the course.

It's really fun and it does have some challenging holes where if you mess up you might lose a disc.

From what I saw, I didn't really see anyone there playing so you are not rushed at all.

There are vending machines on site right near hole #1. I really liked this because I forgot to bring water so it was great to see the machine.

Cons:

It's a very wide open course. I usually like to play with more variation but a majority of the holes was, throw it around the tall grass to the right or left. Then at I believe hole #13 you start to play in the woods for a couple holes, then back out into the open. So I felt like I played a few holes over and over again.

The tall grass does make it tough to find a disc. I did end up losing a disc but that happens. But that tall grass was pretty brutal.

There was crap ton of hornets in the field from hole #15 - #16. Like at first, I thought they were this locust bug that was flying around at hole #4. But nope they were hornets, so please be careful.

The tee signs were kind'of helpful. However I was lost after hole #1 actually because we were shooting at a different basket. Also we didn't even play #3 because we couldn't find it. Also the signs say Par 4, Par 5 etc. When a majority of the course can easily be done playing par 3.

I'm not sure if I am the only one, but when you looking for your disc in the tall grass, after about 5 minutes of looking, my legs were incredibly itchy. It's not poison Ivy but wow my legs were extremely itchy.

Other Thoughts:

Instead of going to Idlewild, my friend and I went to this course instead because it was closer and we dropped by Cincinnati Skyline Chili for lunch afterwards. Now I've got to say, it would've been more enjoyable if it wasn't so hot outside. I am not used to experiencing playing in 90+ degree weather so it was pretty brutal. But for my experience playing in an out of state Disc course, it was really fun. Next time I would like to check out the many other courses in the Cincinnati area but due to lack of time, this was the only course we could play.

Other Thoughts:

When I played this course it just started snowing and it was ½ hr before dusk. Despite what the park hours of use state on the signs (close at dusk) the gates were locked. That was the only obstacle I encountered the entire time.
I trekked roughly ¾ mi through the parking lot and onto the course and did not see any litter! This is the cleanest park and DGC I have ever set foot in.
First thoughts of the course were just another typical well maintained park setting course. Then add large tear-dropped shaped concrete tee pads with a "foul-line" stamped across the top along with the simple yet informative tee signs and you're on your way to a fun disc golf round. Most of the terrain is flat with a small rolling knoll near hole #12 and a slight incline on hole #13. Though I didn't encounter any tall brush on the course you can definitely see where it does pose a threat in conjunction with the O.B. throughout the course. I would imagine the water hazards on the back half are seasonal as is the tall brush. The course flows fairly well with hole #9 ending towards the front of the park and hole #18 finishes near the start. The most gratifying course a beginner could ever play and a great start for any future DG player.

Heritage Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 16, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has some challenging out of bounds areas. The tees are in great shape. The signs are pretty good hear, with clear directions to the next tee. It was my first time here, and I had no trouble finding the next tee. There are some baskets and tees that are a challenge for me as a new player.

Cons:

The walking path comes into play on several holes, and if there are a lot of walkers, you have to be careful to be sure no one is in range. With the tall vegetation, it is necessary to walk out and check the path to make sure you have time to throw. There must be a gun range nearby, because the sound of shotguns was ever present in the near distance. I seemed to be able to block this out, and it was not an issue. I guess I am used to that sound.

Other Thoughts:

I am not a disc golf expert, but it seems that many of the holes that are par 5s or par 4s could be truly a par 3 hole or par 4 hole. I have only played a few courses, and I have not seen par 5s under 300 yards. The out of bounds areas can really trip up a beginner like me who is not always accurate off of the tee, but I managed a 79 on a course listed as an 81. First time I have been able to do that anywhere. The holes are short enough that I can make up for a bad drive with a good second toss that gets me close. I really like this course, however, and plan to be back a lot. I recommend going when there are not many walkers on the walking path.

Pros:

We keep coming back because it keeps making us laugh.

The tees are very nice.

If you are pretty good you will probably have a decent game.

Cons:

If on the other hand (for most of us our lefts) you are less than good it's quite probable that you will lose your disc in one of the many giant super-dense brush and grass islands in the middle of your way. The brush is deceptively dense. The brush is so dense that you could spend an hour or more searching for it right under your nose. I would only use something super neon bright if you are worried about that. Even here now in september the grass and brush is still not dead enough to get into. You will hate it so much you'll only be able to laugh.

The second half of the course is actually very pleasant and redeems a bit the amount of time you spent crashing through a bunch of stinging nettle and dodging bees and wasps.

Part of the course is interrupted by a walking path and this is a very popular place for dog-walking.

The photos for this course are not accurate, all the brown areas are where they planted things and just let them go wild.

Other Thoughts:

When we first played here we spent so much time searching for our discs that we decided the planners of the course must have modeled a course and just decided to place it down regardless of what was around because of how absurd some of the islands of weeds and brush are.
