Best Course In Parkersburg Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

For such a small but well maintained park , this 18 hole course packs a pretty good punch. The baskets are yellow banded Discatchers , there are 2 tee pads of which at least one is cement and mutliple pin positions . The pins were in the longer spots when I was here because of the tournament weekend earlier in the month . The signage is the weakest of the course equipment . They give you hole # and distance , but not really the distance if the pins are in the long position . The course utilizes the park's elevation . It has great balance , where hole 1 moves you towards the woods , then you throw 2 , 3 , 4 and 5 , ( also 8 & 9 ) in the woods , popping out with partial woods on 6 and 10 , and some more open bombers on 11 , 12 , 13 , 16 , and 17 . A water carry ( sort of ) on 13 . an downward short right to left hill throw to an elevated basket on 7 ( great short hole ) , and a throw to a basket sitting on a hill on 15 .There are even a few mandos on the course . The Mid Ohio Disc Golf Club did a great job of course design here . They say that Variety Is The Spice Of Life . This course proves it ! Something is here for everyone . Families , newbies , intermediates and even good ams or pros will like this course Some amenities such as steps and bridges , shelters when not in use , some water , and a bathroom up by #1 along with Port O Lets . A very good hole is #10 , throwing off an elevated tee on the edge of the woods , slightly right to left into a narrow fairway with rough on both sides . #15 is a drive from the edge of the woods , then right to left with trees in the fairway , to the basket which sits on a hill ( nice hole ) . My signature hole would be #7 , the short downhill toss over the road to an elevated basket sitting behind a big tree .

Cons:

Believe it or not , there are a couple of cons . #1 signage . The distances were not close to being accurate on some of these holes . Adding some signage that would show pictures of the holes with their alternate pin positions would be a great help . even adding a couple of NEXT TEE signs would be a plus . #2 is no huge deal , but since the park is not big , a few holes ( 1, 17 & 18 ) might put a few non disc playing park goers in harms way . Be good ambassadors for the sport and either wait for them to move or skip the hole , maybe playing it later . Remember to print a map , because the course may trip you up from time to time , especially on the later holes that are in the longer position . When you finish hole 9 , and come out of the woods , ,#10's tee pad is to your left and slightly up an embankment next to the woods . After 13 the next tee is close to the woods on your left . #16 is behind and to the left , down the path behind basket 15 . After finishing 17 you need to cross the road on your far left and backtrack to 18's tee .

Other Thoughts:

This course has just too much to offer to pass up . Almost a destination course , it certainly exceeds anything I have played in West Virginia so far ( Except maybe Redeemer Park ) .Both the park personnel and the local disc golf club have combined to make this a challenging and fun experience . Just several miles off of 77 , this is an opportunity for you to buy some lunch at the convenience store down the road off of 31 , eat and spend an afternoon disc golfing . Variety , hard and easy tees to accommodate all , in a well cared for park . My Recommendation : If you live within 60 miles of this course , are staying in the Parkersburg ( or even Cambridge Ripley or Wheeling , or are traveling through on I-77 , you need to make an effort to PLAY IT !!!!

Really Good Place To Play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Great Mix of hole types: uphill, rolling hills, down hill, gaps, water hazard, etc....

-Pretty good parking, and a bathroom facility.

-Teepads and Signs are in good condition.

-Good mix of wooded and open. Pretty good walking distance.

Cons:

-Signs are hole info only, not image or picture of hole layout. You just get the distances. (which i think is inaccurate at this moment). Could use some updated signs, and accurate par/distances for pin positions.

Other Thoughts:

Really, there isn't much to complain about. It's a fun course; I went out of my way to play it again. Some of the shelters have folks in them, but not a busy park. Seems like a good place to have a cookout and throw some with friends and family too!

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wood County Veterans Memorial Park has a hidden gem of a course in an area lacking quality disc golf. I was pleasantly surprised while playing here and quickly found this course to be a fun play with great attention to detail. This course does a great job of combining park-style and rugged (as some of the best WV courses do) as it wanders throughout different parts of the park.

The course starts off with a fun shot from the open into the woods, then takes you down, up, up, and back down with a few great holes through the woods. The rest of the course takes you through sections of woods and also through more open parts of the park. Water is incorporated from 13-15 starting with a great pond shot and then with two holes with a creek snaking through the fairway.

I appreciate a lot of the extra little touches on the course such as bridges and steps when necessary, the use of mandos, a lot of benches, an elevated basket on hole 7, etc.

The blue and red tees provide a good variety of shots. The tees are grippy and very comfortable.

Navigation is great and there are markers on the basket that point you in the right direction.

Cons:

There aren't any real major cons here, just a few minor things.

No maps on the tee signs which would help on a few holes.

A couple more straight-forward and pretty open holes.

A bit of a long walk from 17-18.

A few holes play close to pavilions and park roads.

I'm pretty sure 12's basket was pulled from the ground as I didn't see it anywhere.

Other Thoughts:

This is on the high end of a 3.5 and I'd give it a 3.75 if possible. I really enjoyed playing here and would be happy to have this as my home course. Again, I enjoy courses like this that have a great mix of "park-style" holes and then some more rugged ones in the woods. One of the best courses in the area.

Rugged Course Meets Park-Style 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 23, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Design - Wood County is never boring, and no two holes that are similar. I wouldn't say you will "use every shot in your bag", but you definitely need to be versatile to score well here. The shapes of the holes provide plenty of variety. The distances also provide varying challenges. Make your birdie opportunities count when you have them.

2) Building on my first point, the land available for the course is very good. Elevation is incorporated very well. There are a few multi-shot holes due to elevation changes. There is also a small pond on the back-9 that you have to clear from the tee. It's not a very long throw, but enough to make you pay attention.

3) Park conditions and amenities were great. Restrooms were clean and the grounds were well-kept. I know that there are other park users, but we didn't seem to have any issue playing without encroachment.

Cons:

1) Maturation - this is a new course. The undergrowth is pretty strong in some areas of the woods. Again, overtime this will likely take care of itself. The potential for lost discs is present. Spotters may be occasionally necessary, especially on the more-wooded front-9.

2) Benches, concrete tees, trashcans...as the course ages, these things will be necessary. Not having them now is not a huge issue for me as I understand the course is new, but when compared with the best courses in America, these amenities are lacking.

3) Airport proximity - while not a busy airport, there will be low-flying planes at some point during your round...just be aware.

Other Thoughts:

Wood County is a really cool spot for a course. It's really new, and while it has some maturing to do, after I few years I would expect to be one of the best courses in the area. The wooded portions of the course need time to acclimate to the course, and with ample traffic this should take care of itself.

I only brought up the lack of course amentiies in my "cons" in order to follow up with: Wood County has the potential to be a great course. All of the elements of design are present and strong. This was my first course in West Virginia, and I thought it was great. I'm not big on the Appalachian Mountain courses that are more hiking than disc golf. This was the perfect course for me, as it had plenty of elevation but was in a park setting.

The course is very convenient from Parkersburg. Just head northeast of town toward the airport. Follow the signs for the airport and you'll see the park on your left...if you see the airport, you've gone too far.

I serve as a college minister for my church and we were on a mision trip to the area. A few of my kids have gotten into disc golf by playing some rounds with me over the years. They really wanted to play so we looked up this course as it was closest to our lodging. (another great opportunity for me to plug DGCR, without which I never would have been able to find this place) We took a group of 8, and played doubles...in 2 groups of 4. All totalled 4 groups. Even the kids that had never played had a blast, and it was their first experience with the sport. For that reason, Wood County will be a special course in my memory.

If you're looking for a WV course with lots of variety, give Wood County a shot. If you're passing through the Parkersburg area, this is definitely a course to play. Just across the river, there are some other good courses in Ohio, so it's not a bad spot to for a weekend of disc golf. I'd definitely recommend you give this course a shot.

Photo Correction 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

multiple tee pads, good pin locations, good variety of shots. Quiet course when I played on a weekday in the summer.

Cons:

non disc golfers may interfere with play due to play on public park areas.

Other Thoughts:

I uploaded the course photos and realized I skipped hole 12, therefore the subsequent holes are incorrectly numbered. "Hole 12" is really 13, 13 is really 14, etc.

Pros:

the course offers both open and woods shots and also up and down drives. it will have both red and blue concrete tees and hopefully 2 and 3 different pin positions on each hole. the course has very good access from both parkersburg, w.v. on rt.2 and marietta on rt31 out of williamstown. there are very nice rest rooms and porta johns seasonal and better than most dics golf courses offer and are kept up well.

Cons:

yes-unfortunately we do have an occasional mule or horse on the grounds. they are NOT supposed to be there at all. we will have to keep complaining until the park board notifies the stables across rt31 to keep out period! #12 is too close to the building and is scheduled to be moved to the other side of garage when something can be figured out to protect the carved eagle on a stump there. parking is nice during the season but; the gates will probably be closed as usual for winter. we CAN play there in the winter without it being considered trespassing as that was a stipulation when the course was established.

Other Thoughts:

there are hopes to get the left gate [when entering] moved to one end or other of the garage to provide a bit more parking in the winter. car pool for now if possible. as of 2/23/13 i believe 15 of the pins are in new positions as a temporary course and to be changed around after most have gotten a chance to play it as is. #12 tee still supposed to be changed away from the building plus #1 blue tee may be moved to not make it as dangerous a throw when people are at the shelter. it will still be as good or better than the current shot. expect more changes and hopefully concrete tee pads as the weather gets better.
