Fun 9 Holes At Dexter Lake Church! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 28, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Dexter Lake Church sits at the back of their large expanse of nicely mowed lawn. The course has a nice combination of wide open holes with little in your way and slightly tighter fairways with trees and brush to avoid. The course starts on the side of the church with the garage building and then plays around the grounds counter clockwise. Navigation is easy and mostly intuitive. There are no tee pads but it's usually obvious where players have been teeing from. The tee signs are well done, homemade ones. They give you the #, distance and an arrow pointing out the route. Some signs are missing or broken. Chainstars are the basket of choice here. I think each metal tee pole had a garbage can cleverly attached.

# 1 and 2 both have some accuracy challenges. On # 1, you have to throw an annie around the corner and down to the basket. It's not tight but the possibility of landing in the trees is there. # 2 tees off from a sandy little tee box straight down 222'. The fairway is semi-tight between a fence on the right and the parking lot on the left.

3 and 4 are both pretty much wide open. #4 is 447' with one tree out there you have to avoid.

# 5 is 278' and fairly wide with rough on your right. The # 6 basket is set in a lump of 12 trees giving you a different look.# 7 is 309' throwing to a basket in the woods. Then # 8 is 378' down a not wide open fairway. You finish with # 9 throwing 281' out to a basket in the lawn. One tree has to be avoided. From there you are about 700' over wide open lawn back to the starting point. What a perfect time to practice that roller you've been thinking about?

Cons:

No real tee pads but it really wasn't a factor.

# 8 sign broken off. I think # 6 sign was missing.

Some wide open holes.

Less than challenging, at times.

Other Thoughts:

This is mostly a typical little 9 hole church/city park course. But why then did I have a smile on my face afterward? That's because Dexter Lake has a certain enjoyment factor to it. I would think most players coming here would agree. It is a great big green area to experiment with that new disc or new throw you've been thinking about. It's a wonderful platform to throw rollers on.

There was this young lady on a trail bike who kept going round and round and round. The circular drives here made for a perfect Grand Prix course for her biking pleasurew. You might want to stay out of her way.

Nice Church Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 8, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Easy to Navigate once you find the start. Map helps but not necessary.
-GREAT use of space to create holes that are challenging.
-Good mix of Hyzer/Anhyzer holes. For a backhander, there are 3 anhyzer holes and 3 hyzer. 3 you can do either.
-Grass is mowed and course well kept. Seems to drain well.
-Very low chance to lose a disc. Possibly hole 1 if you fade too far down the hill.
-Not too many people seem to use the course, and it flows well so it's hard to catch up to groups.
-Plenty of parking

Cons:

-No tee pads, but there are clear spaces where you should throw from.
-Signs are missing on some holes, but the poles are up so you can see where to throw from.

Other Thoughts:

I would give this course a higher rating if it had more difficulty. For the same reason, I give it a 3 instead of a 2 because it requires a variety of shots. A skilled player could leave with 8 birdies, 9 if they can throw 4 hundo. At the same time, you might leave with only 3 or 4 because you weren't as precise.

It's probably the best Church course I've ever played.

Fun 9 Hole Course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 15, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-It is free, everyone loves free things.
-One of the smoothest flowing courses I've played.
-Very clean course with garbage buckets on every tee.
-Grass is always mowed.
-Hard to lose a disc.
-Baskets are all there and in good condition.
-Tee signs are for the most part perfectly intact, some are mildly damaged but the info you need is still there.
-Some fun shots for players of all skill levels from beginner to advanced.
-Should be an easy course to learn to hit par on, which is good for people "trying out" the sport and a nice stroke to the ego of a more advanced player.
-Never is very busy, so you will usually almost have the course to yourself.

Cons:

-Since it is mostly flat the wind can sometimes be what makes this course with seemingly "easy" holes a bit of a challenge.
-Hole 1's basket plays really close to someone's backyard with no barrier, so I guess you could potentially have to go into the yard to retrieve a disc if you really over power it....
-Some holes are very close to the many driveways and parking areas of the church.
-Dirt/Sand tee pads if that bothers you. Could use a little bit of improvement to denote where all the tees end as some are just a patch of dirt which have seen heavy use and have now I'm sure increased in size.
-Wish there was more than 9 holes, but can't really count that against it...
-No practice basket for putting. Not a big deal to me, but many would count that as a con.
-Hole 9 ends nowhere near where you park and start playing Hole 1.
-It is at a church, so it probably isn't a very polite idea to go play on Sunday mornings while their service is going. (Simply out of respect) Maybe stop in for a service and hit the course afterwards!

Other Thoughts:

Hole 1:
To get to the hole it starts in the back by a garage and is really easy to find. This hole is great for a RHFH practice or good for LHBH with a nice overstable disc. The basket is slightly down over the hill to the right and is not visible from the tee. Pretty much the only hole set up like this on the course.

Hole 2:
Tee is a dirt platform surrounded by rocks, watch out for the trees immediately 10-20 feet off the tee right in front of you, also be mindful of parking lot which is ever so close to the left side. Grab your straightest flying disc and make sure you don't nail the trees off the tee. With a good throw and release you should easily be able to Eagle this hole. If not you should definitely be able to save Par. Slight hill comes into play on the right side slightly higher than teepad with the basket nested slightly lower than the teepad. Nothing really to worry about though. Just make sure you release it good enough that it won't catch and dig into the terrain, you will never forgive yourself for messing up such a simple shot.

Hole 3:
The basket for this one I found a bit deceiving the first time I played it. I threw what I though was a decent throw for my skill level only to find that there is a dip in the grass making the basket seem closer than it actually is. So if your throw lands short just be mindful of that fact. Not sure if that was intentional or if anyone else who has played this course has experienced it, but I like it! Don't be fooled by that and you shouldn't have much of a problem.

Hole 4:
Straight forward hole, well designed for the bigger arms who can crush a throw and want to show off a little to the traffic driving by. For weaker arms, you will probably take at least a bogie here. A couple trees are in the fairway, but none really pose much of a challenge. You will probably have some fun fighting the wind on this hole.

Hole 5:
One of my favorite holes at this course, I don't know why though? The basket is nicely nestled in a cleared part of woods with a couple of trees dispersed in the fairway. It is just very nicely placed into the natural terrain. It is almost a little secluded with a nice patch of woods separating you from the busy traffic. Maybe that is why I like it, because it feels like you truly can just relax and just throw.

Hole 6:
Basket is behind a patch of trees with a driveway very close on the right so watch out for incoming traffic if you are not yet that accurate with your throw. You will get to contend a little with a gully about 40 feet from the basket if you land closer to Hole 5's fairway, but all in all just get past that patch of trees and you will be golden. This basket is like trying to thread a camel through the eye of a needle. This should be a bit of a challenge even for skilled players.

Hole 7:
One of the favorites among locals who play this course. You have to throw across the church's driveway so just be mindful of the people coming and leaving as you are playing. Once you get your disc past the driveway you will get the challenging task of maneuvering your disc through what seems like a very densely packed set of pine trees to get to the basket. Could result in a death putt if you aren't careful with your shot once you get close to the tee. Even if you have played the whole course good before this is where you will probably collect an extra stroke...or three...courtesy of the trees!

Hole 8:
The most visual fairway as others have pointed out. On the left you have a gully with a little overgrown rough and on the right is patch of woods separating it from the surrounding neighborhood. Better hope your disc doesn't roll when it lands or it could make for a bit of fun throwing from the rough. This hole almost allows you to see the exact line you need to throw to get Par.

Hole 9:
You throw back across the driveway and again there is some rolling hills which can deceive you a little. You either will have a slight upshot or you could even have a death putt depending on how well you threw. Wind likes to come up good on this hole as well so don't be surprised if your amazing shot doesn't go where it was supposed to. Good ending hole to a fun little 9 Hole course. Then you get to enjoy your slightly long walk back to where you parked or back to Hole 1.

Just recently I have started playing at this course and I will say that it is a great course to play if you really are just focused on having some fun or are looking for a good course to bring younger kids to who don't like to walk a full 18 holes. Would be a great time for some family bonding through Disc Golf. You honestly can't go wrong playing here. If I could I would rate it 3.75*'s.

I pray, while someone down the street gambles 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 27, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Hole # 1 blind basket, had to go over a little knoll as the fairway went leftwards

hole # 2, trees in your face off the teeing area, with the parking lot the length of the fairway all on the left side of the hole. Your not going to throw a straight shot.

I also liked hole # 7 which the basket was in a grove of pine trees with a semi steep slope surrounding the back side of the green

and I liked # 8 which have the most defined fairway on the course IMO, but was also a hard hole for a LHBH player. As it was tight for the beginning of the fairway, then it opened up a bit with the basket so far left that there wasn't to many ways that one could throw their disc through the pine grove that surrounded basket # 7)

Good Flow.

Cons:

Dirt tees and broken tees signs and no facilities we're the only major flaws, I saw on this 9 hole course (But I doubt very seriously that the Church goers are the one's to blame for the broken tee signs).

No restrooms, (unless the church was open)

Other Thoughts:

I like courses on Church Properties, as I'm hoping that the youth ministries of these churches (that have courses) have some kind of youth DG days or leagues.

Within a mile of the Firekeepers Casino and close to the Interstate.

when one plays a 9 hole course, one expects a very recreational type of course. This course is for the rec to advanced player and has a couple of challenging holes.

Ample parking.

Veterans Memorial between # 2 basket and # 3 tee.

As mentioned before, within a mile of the Firekeppers Casino on the East side of Battle Creek.

shallow and pedantic 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 3, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Aesthetic-- Plays through the front yard of a large church. VERY wide open with minimal trees or elevation change.

Baskets-- Brand new ChainStars. nice and visible and grippy! in great repair

Navigation/signage-- signage is basic at best but the navigation is relatively easy.

Impossible to lose a disc here unless you really shank it into the woods badly.

Cons:

Boring-- course provides no real challenge. the day I was there it was extremely windy and that was about the only challenge I had. without elevation change and without much in the way of foliage there isn't much to write home about.

risk/reward/challenge-- not really any to speak of.

Tees- sand and logs mainly. though they're not bad I guess.

Other Thoughts:

I would guarantee this course was designed by a disc golfer as there are lines to be followed BUT, a destination course this is not.

* Easy to get to from Highway

Cons:

* Sand instead of Concrete Tee pads

Amatuer friendly 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 9, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- It's never crowded
- There are a couple holes to air it out and a very technical hole to challenge you.
- Easy to navigate from hole to hole
- Clearly marked tee signs

Cons:

- A couple of the tee boxes are loose sand.
- It is a very short course

Other Thoughts:

Hole 7 will challenge anybody. There is no straight forward approach, as the basket is in the middle of a copse of trees.

Brand new course, first opened on I believe 6/30/2012.
