Rolling park golf 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 5, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Concrete tees
- Decent signage
- Good variety of hole legths
- Nice topography (trees, elevation, etc...)

Cons:

- Hole #1 in illogical place
- Could use some 'welcome' signage to make the start of the course more obvious.
-

Other Thoughts:

Upon first entering the park, it's not obvious where to go to start the course. This is in large part due to hole #1 being fairly far away from any parking area. According to the course description, apparently, there will be a parking lot built near where hole #1 is now. But, for now, the locals just start the course at the hole closest to the parking area. (Hint to course maintainers: it might be a good idea just to renumber the holes until the parking lot is built)

Overall, the course is a fun 12-holer with a nice variety of shots required to score well, from short finesse holes to long bombers. The rolling hills and trees featured in the park are utilized well with a good balance of uphill, downhill, left, right and some that give you a choice of routes to the basket. It's easy to navigate the course, as the next tee is readily visible from the previous basket.

At the time of my visit, construction of a large dike apparently wiped out the tee for hole #5, so I had to improvise by throwing from the sidewalk on top of the dike.

Fun and Challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1. Can be very challenging with a lot of tree's to shoot around.

2. Well maintained

3. Baskets, Tee's, and signs in great shape

4. Easy to navigate

Cons:

1. Hole 1 isn't the easiest to find the first time you play. I normaly play hole 12 first as its right by the parking area and the basket is close to hole 1.

2. Limited parking

Other Thoughts:

This is a very fun course to play, its monsters 776' hole is a fun challenge for an intermediate player like myself. There are a couple of blind shots so spotting your basket ahead of time is a good practice. There are a couple of really long open shots perfect for putting some serious torque on your driver.

Pros:

Good scenery and good variety of distances and elevation. Good course for a quick game. Some rough on holes 2 and 3 is cool for a change.

Cons:

Hole 1 is in a strange location, not near parking. A little small

Pros:

Beautiful trees. Elevation changes. Nice park. I loved the different holes uphill, downhill. blind shots. Nicely mowed with some rough that is not too rough.

Cons:

Whoever laid the course out needed to understand that maybe hole 1 should be by the parking area and the last hole end there as well.

If they had a map available would be nice.

user friendly course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

a family friendly course, not too long, shady, close to playgrounds. Signs are good, tee pads are long with good traction. Good variety of shots, uphill, down hill, short an long distance holes a good intermediate course, trash cans available, seats available every couple of holes. My grandson and i were able to get a couple of rounds in on a hot humid day with no problems.clean and no vandalism.

Cons:

No course map, no water source, hole one is hard to find.

Other Thoughts:

this course complements other 12 hole parks around the area including madrid and maxwell city parks.

Updated 12-2015 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 19, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1. Concrete pads, nice baskets, benches on most tee pads, trash can at most tee pads, good tee signs
2. Park has port-a-john in center, good shelters with electric outlets, horse shoe pit, and small playground
3. One mile from course at Maytag Park in Newton
4. Forgiving play with no water and friendly vegetation. OBs are unlikely.
5. Basket to next tee is a very short walk and most tees clearly visible from prior basket
6. Elevation comes into play on most holes. Helps add challenge on windy days,
7. Jungle play is quite possible as this course does not get heavy play.
8. Well maintained park

Cons:

1. Lacks a kiosk and course map (I need to work on finding one or making one(?) )
2. Pretty easy to follow and figure out
3. I can not see it expanding to a 'good 18' as area surrounding would be field holes.

Other Thoughts:

I have played this course sporadically since it opened. Housekeeping has always been in order. Turf is solid and ok for wet rounds. The thought and work in improving this park is apparent with the addition of disc golf. Great course to take a newer player (or yourself) and do extra work along with your round.
!! Just one mile to Maytag Park in Newton and about ten to Lewis Club in Colfax

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

New addition to the city of Newton! Good signs, concrete teepads, and nice brand new Innova baskets. Lots of trees make for tough lines. Uses elevation well on several holes, and a couple of blind approaches will really test your ability to judge distance.

Cons:

Doesn't use the available space very well. The 776 ft hole 9 unnecessarily takes up a huge chunk of the park. Parking is very limited, and there is no place to park to get good access to the first hole, so most everyone starts at 12. Some of the teepads are dug into hillsides and mud runs all over them cutting into your run-up. They unsuccessfully attempted to grow some grass around some of these teepads last summer. Maybe success will come this year!

Other Thoughts:

Not a bad course, but not a good one either. Hopefully over time some of the issues can be resolved. For all my whining about it, there really are some cool holes here (1,2,5,8,12), I just think that the space has a lot more potential than is being utilized at the moment.

Solid Twelve 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 31, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mandatory Pros:
Nice tee pads.
Nice signs.
Port-a-John accessible from 2 points.
Its in a park, so its mowed.
Beautiful new Innova baskets with giant, yellow, glowing chastity belts.

Layout is good. Space was limited in this park and they still got 9+ nice holes in there. Nary a single hole directly interferes with the other features of the park. The layout also coaxes you to play a second round quick-a-minute as the last basket is located very close to tee number one and yet cleverly protected by a few thick conifers.
Great idea!
The designers did a good job of not cramming toooo much in too small a space while still getting the most for their money. Some golfers may feel the layout is cramped, but being that it doesn't really interfere with the park functions it shouldn't be too big of a factor.

Having a second disc golf option in Newton is so great and may lessen the burden on the great (and much played) Maytag Park.

Hole variety is impressive. The trees and elevation are used to great effect on almost every hole. The holes aren't necessarily long but they will force you to hit your lines.
There are uphill, downhill, over the valley and over the hill blind shots to be had.
Very fun.
Wooded fairways and low ceiling shots are the norm here.
If you like to look down the fairway from the tee pad and see just a little basket peeking out from behind some trees, this is the place for you.

So what's missing?

Cons:

Not a lot to report here.

Parking seemed a little limited. This 12-holer is in a nice city park but if it was a busy day I'm not so sure you'd be able to find a spot that wasn't next to a sign reading: "No Parking Off Road".

Everything else really checks out pretty good.

Other Thoughts:

I'm interested to see how some of the tee pads weather;
a few are built into hill sides and I can see erosion being a bit of a problem. Some landscaping might be in order to keep them from becoming hopelessly buried in mud. I'm sure the Newton Disc Golf club is on it, though.
They have come this far putting a lot of work in to create a great course on a nice plot.
I'm sure Woodland will continue to be an excellent example of what caliber of course can be realized, even if its only 12 holes, when you utilize a great piece of land.
You can call this a home-boy review if you want to, but there just isn't a lot to lower the rating from 4 discs.
Rating a 3.5 just seems too low for such a nice course.
All in all, a Solid Twelve.
