Cyprus Community Church Was Designed For Whom! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 24, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cyprus Church sits high on a big hill with awesome views of the surroundings. The course was designed by a Boy Scout, possibly for an Eagle Scout project. I wish the designer had gotten some input from someone in the disc golf community. My question here with this course and its design is? Who did you design this course for? For church members? For the church's youth groups? For the local disc golfers? For touring pro disc golfers?

The design is just not good. It features some silly holes that no-one would ever return to play. Starting with # 1. I never really determine where the tee pad is but the basket is set on the side of this ultra-steep hillside. Anyone who's throw fades right is going to have a strenuous hike down and up this hill. That's probably enough to discourage most youth group type players. # 2. I never found any tee so I just aimed all the way down there where I spotted a basket. This is actually an epic downhill fir experienced players. However, I lost my favorite driver teeing off from the highest point although I was throwing to the wrong basket.

From here things went from bad to worst. I couldn't find the tees. I never found the # 5 basket. Then the last two holes play way up this giant hill. You have 250' holes that play like they're 400' or more. Not a fun round!

Cons:

Course is so rugged that it wouldn't be fun for anyone.

Playing back up the hill at the end of your round is tiresome and boring.

Two baskets are trashed.

No tee pads.

Terrible design, especially with holes 1-8-9.

Other Thoughts:

This just isn't a fun round for anyone. Between the trek up the hill and the possibility of throwing amiss on # 1 and having to chase your disc down this steep hillside and the arduous climb back up on 8 & 9, it's just not enjoyable.

# 2 is a cool interesting downhill throw even though you're throwing at the basket down to the left and not the basket by the two huge trees. Especially for an experienced player, this basket down near the trees would make for a more epic hole.
For one disc wonders from the church, this epic opportunity would be wasted upon them.

I love to see disc golf courses installed at churches but the designer needs to know the people who'll be playing the course and their throwing capabilities. This course missed the church folks that could have been enjoying this course the most.

Steep Hill Walking 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 22, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Free, not crowded, nice views, opportunity for a lot of uphill throws, some trees, a large downhill hole,

Cons:

South facing hill was hot, one big downhill throw, felt like a lot of uphill throws, dirt tees, not a lot of technical challenge

Other Thoughts:

Might be quite beautiful if timed with the wildflowers, a few well thought out tree or bush plantings would help make it more interesting, still, worth a play

Good learning course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Never crowded / Ample parking. Open field. Great for learning general skills and improving basic form.

Cons:

No tee boxes, just kind of have to find a flat spot to tee from wherever you think the tee box is supposed to be. Hole 9 is not maintained and has tall grass from tee to basket - I skip this hole every time I play.

Other Thoughts:

This course is down the street from where I live so it's easy to access and is also where I developed most of my throwing technique. It's never crowded so I get the most practice per play by pretty much emptying my bag on every hole. The front 3 zig-zag up and down the hill, 4-8 circle around the base. It's an open course with very mild obstacles and is really great for honing skills and just general practice for new players. I still play it regularly when I'm bored or don't feel like driving out to another course.

Nice Quick Nine 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 15, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-There is ample parking (as long as church isn't in session)
-Some fun holes, uphill, downhill, few obstacles which makes it nice for a beginner.
-Of all the times I have played I have never seen anyone else on the course and only one time when driving by have I seen anyone else playing. So if throwing a round with no one around is your thing this course is pretty good.

Cons:

-No permanent tees Some of the tees are all but impossible to fine. I have played the course 10+ times and have yet to find the proper tee for holes 4 and 5. You just have to start where you think the tee should be.

There are a few blind holes where you can't see the basket until you walk 3/4 the way to the hole.

Other Thoughts:

There is a lot of room for improvement here. The first thing I would suggest would be permanent tees. Could be expanded to 18 fairly easily (there is ample room) but I feel there isn't enough challenge/obstacles.

Good Variety, Completely Empty 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good variety of shots; distances are good for not having permanent tee boxes; great weather and scenery; I was the only one on the course

Cons:

No permanent tee boxes; need map to navigate course

Other Thoughts:

Only played nine, but it would have been fun to go around again. Looks like there could be room for 18. Would give a better rating if tee boxes were permanent.

Great addition to Monterey area 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 3, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Mach 3 baskets
-Ample parking (when church is not in session)
-Variable terrain, with two downhill shots, three uphill shots, three that are flat, and one across the slope
-Shot distances are good, about 225 ft the shortest and 350 ft the longest, and a driver is needed most of the time, with full-power throws
-Variable types of throws, and balanced for right and left-handed throwers
-Scenic course with great views of the valley

Cons:

-No tee signs, but tees are marked with rebar and red flags and a round paver in the ground with a painted black number
-Tee pads are dirt, uneven, and not level in many cases. Next tee is always fairly close to the previous pin, so keep looking for rebar and red flags once you are done putting
-On both holes 2 and 3 pin the is hidden from the tee and requires a walk along 1/3 of the fairway to see them
-No amenities (e.g., bathroom, water) readily available

Other Thoughts:

2016 update:
I played this course for the second time on March 29, 2016. The grass was extremely tall, in some cases waist high, growing through a couple of baskets, and requiring eagle eyes to spot where discs landed. Tee markers were absent except for hole 7, where one red cement disc remains at tee. Basket 4 is damaged, with cage severely bent.

Originally I thought this was a great addition to the Monterey area. Lack of upkeep has made me rethink this view, and I regrettably downgraded this from a 4 to a 3. Still a lot of potential, some fun shots, but the upkeep needs to be there. And clearly there is very little use, since trails to and from baskets and tees have not "worn in" since the course was installed.

Original notes (2013):
I really liked this course, and there is a lot of room to expand. The terrain is great but the tees definitely need some work. All distances below are guesses.

Parking: follow the drive up the church and park in the uppermost level. Then follow the road, walk down the drive about 100 m to a pullout with dumpsters.
Hole 1: The tee is near the dumpsters in the grass--look for about 2 ft of rebar sticking up and a red surveyor flag on it. Pin 1 is across the canyon, towards the church, next to an oak tree. Fun hyzer shot and slightly uphill, likely 350 ft.
Hole 2: Tee is just past pin #1, and as you look down a steep slope you will see the backstop of a softball field. Running along the first base line are four trees, each 40 ft tall. Pin #2 is between the second and third trees at the base of the slope. Gently toss a putter down the 70 ft vertical drop. Fun shot!
Hole 3: Uphill shot with a big oak tree in the middle of the fairway. Hyzer shot has a small window, anhyzer is more open. 300 ft.
Hole 4: Another downhill shot, but not as steep as #2, and more trees in play, but basically another putter shot. 350 ft.
Hole 5: Flat shot at base of hill, pin is near two road culverts. 225 ft.
Hole 6: Left to right shot with the pin tucked in by eucalyptus trees. About 350 ft.
Hole 7: Another left to right shot, but also a hyzer route up over the shoulder of the hill. Pin is tucked in under the drooping branches of another eucalyptus tree. 320 ft.
Hole 8: Tee is on a dirt road, slope up, and the pin is uphill and tucked behind a large, round oak tree. About 300 ft.
Hole 9: Tee also on dirt road, very steep so watch your footing on the run up, and pin is tucked behind small trees but can be approached from either side, about 300 ft again.
