Unique and scenic 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 1, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Upon arrival it didn't look like anything special but it gets better. A couple of holes you must throw over the river and then walk across a very old bridge. The views along the river are great. It's a very unique course with a lot of potential.

Cons:

Poor/ missing signs. For some reason they thought it would be nice to make this an 18 hole course, using the same baskets for different holes. This only made it more confusing to navigate around.

Other Thoughts:

Old city park in a small rural town.

Not Beginner Friendly 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It's the only course in the area.
Nice concrete tee-pads.
The signs for holes 1-9 are nice (where they are still standing)

Cons:

The map contained in the Files/Links section isn't accurate.
Holes 1-3 are blind when vegetation is full. Most of the baskets have very small landing areas surrounded by thick underbrush.
Hole 1 needs a bridge across the steep ditch. there may be water in the ditch.

The bridge on hole 2 will test your nerves.
The bridge near basket 3 tests both nerves and agility. I think the city may be on the receiving end of a lawsuit soon.
Holes 4 & 5 play back and forth across the Rum River with a lengthy walk/climb to access the bridge across the river (at least the bridge is solid here.)
Hole 9 needs a stairway built into the steep hillside climbing from the 8th basket.

Expect to spend more time searching the underbrush for your disc than actually playing the course.

Other Thoughts:

I'm an average player and found the thickets to be almost-perfect obstacles for my driving distance.
I don't think this course will be played frequently enough for the brush to be beat down by players. I know I have no reason or desire to ever play it again.

Has potential, but frustrating 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 14, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very challenging distances, and obstacles
Various tee pads play to the same basket as other holes, but does create unique, and quite different shot potential.

Cons:

-Too much risk for how the course is laid out.
-Some holes don't seem to make sense (#8 and #17 both shoot for a basket that is just beyond a nice cleared area of ground, yet is mounted up on the wooded hillside)
-No easy crossing bridge at hole #1. You must carefully go down a steep embankment and back up the other side. (This also happens on hole #10, which plays to the same basket)

Other Thoughts:

Hole #4 shoots straight across the river, with only a small window to land the disc. If you miss that small hole, get ready to go swimming.
Hole #5 shoots back across the river, right over the heads of people fishing; could be hazardous for them at times.
Hole #7 COULD be a nice challenge, but it runs so close to the banks of the river, we eded up putting 2 discs in the river (we recovered 1 of them)
Hole #17 is the longest hole I've ever played, at 905', most of which has very little hazard potential.

Overall, I found playing this course very frustrating. We spent way too much time retrieving discs from the creek, the river and very thick brush.

Neither my son nor I feel any strong desire to come back and play it again, due to the amount of time spent "recovering" discs, instead of playing.

Potential 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

* For what little area they have to work with, this 9 hole course has a ton of potential. It is not there yet as you will read in the Cons and Other Thoughts, but I give the course props for not just slapping down baskets as I see in a lot of school related courses.

*It has several interesting lines that will cause you to think about your shots. Advanced and up players will need to bend their shots through somewhat tight windows if they want to have any chance at a birdie.

*New players are not punished despite the course's apparent difficulty because most of their shots will come up just short of the windows and obstacles. For advanced players, the 4s and 5s listed as most pars may seem laughable, but for newer players they are spot on and reasonable.

*Ultimately, it has tremendous risk versus reward potential, but right now it is more risk than reward.

Cons:

* No signage, maps, and apparent obvious point to begin. Hole 1's tee box is hidden next to a building and the basket is on the other side of a line of trees. The first basket seen from the parking lot is one of the later holes. I would not have known the layout of the course without some local help.

* Numerous blind shots, making it incredibly difficult to play solo. While I did not lose a disc, I spent more time looking than playing. The idea of 9 holes is to be able to play several rounds in a short period of time. I spent way too much time looking.

* The rough is thick with a lot of shrubbery. That will be beaten down over time, however, there are a lot of the dead and fallen branches that could easily be cleared away and has not been.

* With the river in play on two holes, some of the small trees protecting the bank need to be removed. Shooting over the river, which is not dangerously wide, is still a crapshoot because of the likelihood of being swatted back out into the river.

Other Thoughts:

* I want to point out the potential of this course. For 9 holes it has some very decent holes that you would normally find only on longer 18 hole courses. Most of the holes had some thought put into them, but they still need some work here and there to truly make them playable.

For example:

One hole shoots back over the river, which is not a bad idea, but the preferred line is right over the heads of people who like to fish there. The secondary line is high over the trees on the right of the basket, which means that you are likely going to overshoot the basket just to clear the trees. The locals who were guiding me around mentioned that most people just skip these holes because they do not want to tempt the river.

The longest hole, which plays over an open field, requires players to either skirt a parking lot or throw over it. I was in a position where I had to throw over. A guy parked in his car was very nervous when I did so and watched my disc in flight the whole way (with the way I throw, there was never any danger to his vehicle, but how would he know that?).

Hole 9 plays along the ridge that separates the school from the park. Most holes up to then either play along, into the side, or through this ridge. It is an incredibly tight and low ceiling, requiring either you to layup a few times and just take your par, or run it and get kicked into the rough. The ridge is steep with thick everything everywhere. Locating your disc is slow going and time consuming. Some of this will be cured when additional paths up and down the ridge are beaten in, but some of it needs to be removed and the path widened or heightened just a little.

* It is basically the only course in the area. The nearest one, Princeton, is almost identical in nature with its risk of losing a disc versus reward. Without a companion course put in soon, I feel most players who are initially enthusiastic about this sport will get tired of losing discs or not being able to play the whole course. Having a companion course with fairer fairways (does not need to be a wide open field though) would immediately add a 1/2 star to this course's rating.

*I walked away after one round of 9 holes thinking that since I have now played it I would never need to return. Where I teach puts only a handful of courses within reach of my commute and I was excited that this was going in. However, now I am not so much so. I will still play it again, especially now that I know the layout but until I see more things done here, it will likely not be my first choice when I am heading home.
