Roughed up.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 4, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 very functional DisCatcher baskets are joined by 9 tee pads with signs.

Lots of distance for a campus course. Over half the holes are 350+ feet. Combine this with some tricky basket placements (on a hilltop, around a sharp bend, across a small creek) and you have an above average course if we're going strictly by college courses.

Uses a lot of land that would otherwise be unused. With this, it stays out of the way of almost everything else. It even comes with a little elevation on 2-5!

Some options to play island greens on 7 and 8.

Cons:

Maintenance seemed to have completely forgotten about the course! The trees you have to shoot through on 3 were grown to the point there was almost no line. Hole 8 had grass/wheat up to the waist halfway down the fairway before you cross the creek... and then you have to swim back through that to get to hole 9's tee.

Navigation is very clunky. To get to 3 you'll backtrack across the end of the soccer pitch, the path to hole 4 from 3 was overgrown, to get to hole 7's green you have to go around all the bushes to the left of the fairway, and as mentioned above, you walk all the way along the fairway of 8 to get to the tee of 9... which isn't 75ft away from 8's.

The tee of 6 wasn't that nice gravel mix like most of the other tees. It looked like it used to have it, then the concrete under that became exposed and got really slick. I slipped twice and it hadn't rained in 4 days.

Throwing something over the soccer pitch on holes 1 and 2 is an option, but kind of renders those holes unplayable if a game is going on.

Other Thoughts:

This course is showing a little age and feels kind of shoehorned in. It might mean sacrificing some of the distance, but a few of these holes would be better if they were in a different location (1 and 2 mostly).

I know it was summer, and I know it's not the top priority for the college, but groundskeeping must improve to get any improvement in score from me. The rough is rough, sure; but having no path through any of that tall grass on hole 8 proves that it needs to step up.

Is this worth your time? Of the five courses in the Liberty area, it is the second-weakest (although calling the high school a "course" is a stretch). But if you want a challenging little 9 that requires control and a little wading through waist high grass, give it a go.

Jewellin' Around 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 10, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

William Jewell DGC is a pretty good nine hole layout. The tees are bare earth, boxed in and fairly level. Each hole has a tee sign, and there are dual pin positions on several holes. The standard Innova disc catchers with yellow bands have red flags to help spot the location, and they're in nice condition.

Every hole is a par 3, and the length is formidable but not unreachable. The fairways are grassy, and usually have a light to moderate elevation component. Most fairways are pretty open, but there are a few trees to work around. The rough can be extremely thick, but it's not much of a factor on several holes. A stream is in play on a couple of holes.

The first hole is a good warm up, but a bit bland. Ball field to the left, road to the right, uphill drive about 325'. Hole 2 is pretty cool. 450', steady downhill shot with a tree halfway through that creates a window that can make or break a tee shot. It is a sizable gap, but the branches loom large. 3 is a basket that is amongst the trees, after a downhill drive that is mostly open. 4 is not as long, but is the steepest uphill drive on the course. Not many trees until you reach the top.

5 is probably my favorite hole, and the biggest downhill run. Not as long as 2, but more punishing rough to the right, and the creek backing the pin if you overshoot it. 6 is on fairly level ground with the thick, brushy banks of the creek to the right. There is a hard right bend, and a cluster of trees and bushes take away the far left side. 7 is a fairly plain shot, about 350', without much elevation change or many trees. 8 is a bit downhill, and plays toward the opposite bank of the creek from hole 5. Lightly wooded, but more standing around the pin. Hole 9 is 370', and has some mature trees standing to the left side of the fairway. It is a little uphill, especially as you near the basket.

Cons:

The walks between tees are not the tightest linkage, but take you to prime tee placements, so I think they do the layout a service. Hole 8 and hole 9 tee back to back in opposite directions, which is weird but again is probably making for the best quality holes.

I wouldn't mind concrete tees to improve the slightly rutted, sandy boxes that are currently there.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun one, with distance and elevation that is not common for most 9 hole layouts. It really kicked my butt, and I will return and attempt to restore my dignity. No birdies, 11 over par. Uggh. Hole 6 destroyed me, I was lucky not to lose a disc in the creek.

The grounds look to be maintained impeccably from the photos. I played in January, and lingering snow was remaining in places. This spring I am going to take another go at it for sure. Plays nicely with the 9 hole course at nearby Pleasant Valley DGP.

Solid, but a little old 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 28, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

William Jewel has put a pretty solid nine hole course in that plays around a few spots fields, roads, and a creek. There are signs at every tee, multiple pins on most holes (a rarity for a nine hole course), and a fair bit of variety. Beginners have some chance at success here, while advanced players will have some tough lines to hit to get birdies.

A few holes are really unique. Hole 2 is a downhill tunnel shot, with a left-to-right route available, hole 3 plays through a few trees by the basket, and hole 6 is a tunnel-ish shot. Those are certainly the highlights.

There wasn't a whole lot of elevation to work with, but it was used pretty well on holes 2-4. A few tree lines come into play on several holes and provide a decent challenge coming into the basket on holes 3 and 5, and through the entirety of hole 6.

Cons:

This course is certainly aging. The woods are starting to get a little overgrown, and while the course is certainly playable, the woods don't offer the right challenge like they probably used to. The tees are gravel, and over time, they have gotten pretty uneven in spots, and get wet easily. Teeing off adjacent to the real tee will often provide better footing.

The layout is a bit odd. You have to walk quite a ways to get to the tees of 3 and 9, and back to the parking lot after 9. An additional hole could have been put in each of those walks, and those holes would have all been at least decent. I don't think there's room for 18, but a 12-hole or so layout would have been better. If you use a map, you'll find everything easily.

Several holes are boring. Holes 7-9 don't have a lot going for them being open and flat (except 9 is uphill, but still not great). Hole 1 plays up a hill and oddly around a corner of a field.

Other Thoughts:

This isn't at all a bad course, but I have to think it's not as good as it used to be. It's still a fun play, is accessible for beginners, and plays pretty fast, but that's about it.

If you're just stopping by, this is not a bad option to come play. With plenty of other courses in the area, you can make it a pretty decent day, and I don't think anyone will regret coming here.

Its sum is better than the whole 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

This niner had more than its share of really fun holes.

Signage was solid and did indicate dual basket placement.

Tee pads, while not concrete were a dirt gravel mix boxed in and were fine.

Lots of elevation.

Memorable holes:
#2 Down hill throw through a tree tunnel about 100 ft out.

#3 Another down hill throw to a basket tucked away to the left behind a small opening in a perpendicular line of trees.

#5 Another tunnel like throw down to a basket tucked in to the right behind a group of trees.

#6 "Y" type hole with potential basket placements on either top of the "Y". Today it was a 230 ft throw to the right.

#7 Basket tucked in behind a group of shrubbery.

#8 and #9 concluded with long open throws, down hill and up hill respectively.

Cons:

Lots of elevation!

Lots of walking between some holes. (And this was a typical Missouri humid 90 degree day!!)
The 8-9 finish is kinda odd. You have to walk all the way back past the 8 tee to get to #9 tee.

Other Thoughts:

This was course #9 (#3 for the day) of my KC metro area two day swing.

Definitely enjoyed the quality of the holes, even if I didn't enjoy all the extra walking!!

Not enough there to justify a solo trip, but would be a good part of a multi course day in the north KC area.

Good, Quick Course to Learn on 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

For what the land has, the length and wrapping baskets behind trees is well done. It's a good course to learn on without too much length so beginners will be alright. It feels like it's designed mostly for college kids to get a quick round in after classes and it fits that perfectly. The baskets are moved between the locations relatively frequently and several of the different locations provide different types of shots for the holes.

Cons:

The tee pads are dirt and are pretty washed out in some cases. You may want to tee off next to/behind the tee on some holes. Also, you'll want to check out the map before you start because there's some walking between several of the holes. Also, there are other sports fields nearby and it's not difficult on some holes (specifically 1 and 7) to throw over a fence. There's a barb wire fence in the trees on the right side of hole 2, be careful if you go into the trees.

Other Thoughts:

This course is in the middle of a college campus, so expect to see students on the course that probably don't know disc golf etiquette. All in all this is a pretty average course. Good for a quick round if you're nearby, but not a destination to travel to.

Cons:

- Gravel teepads

Other Thoughts:

I think there are only two or three truly "technical" holes. The flow for holes eight and nine are a little odd.

Tricky and long but fun to have around 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The biggest pro of this course is that it is close to my home. It has a lot of fun yet tricky shots that keep my on my toes. The bulk of the course is mowed and the holes are well marked.

Cons:

There is a small stream that snakes around the course and always seems to catch my discs and make everything a muddy mess. The trees have a deal with the stream and I will sometimes spend as much time in the trees as I do out of it. Poison Ivy is native to the area and the mgmt isn't known for getting rid of it. There is some tall grass in places that can make disc retrieval quite annoying.

Other Thoughts:

The conditions on Hole 1 are nice. The tee is taken care of and there is little chance of losing your disc. The throw itself however is not an easy one to start with. You have to throw up or around a hill to start and the basket is not visible from the tee. I usually throw right towards the road or start of with a hammer throw. If I don't warm up though, I'll often chuck it about 10 feet, straight into the hill and begin to cry. There is also a soccer field next to the hole, which also has a habit of eating discs I have to then retrieve. Hole 2 is sneaky but wonderful, if you can thread the needle of trees to the open field behind it. I have smacked many a disc into the trees on the left and the fence on the right. The Basket for hole 2 is right in front of a set of trees and I have found more than one disc in those trees while searching for my own. Hole 3 is a longer put with a formidable set of trees to get through. The trees are on the edge of the stream and I often smack a tree and send my disc right into the mud. Additionally the grass behind and to the left of the basket get tall and I have wasted a lot of time looking for my mid-range or putter there. The tee on hole 4 is absolutely unusable. Other than that, hole 4 is a long, upward sloping hole with little in the way. The hardest part about this hole is the upward slope. Hole 5 has a decent tee and tricky course design. You can't see the tee from the basket because of the downward slope and the basket is hard to hit as the disc has to travel a good distance before curving to the right to get into the alcove containing the basket. All around and behind the basket are the trees that eat discs. Hole 6 is a relatively straight shot from the tee to the basket with a grove of shrubs in between. Hole 7 is a long shot with the stream snaking about 10 feet in front of the basket. Landing in the stream used to be the biggest concern but now the grass around the stream hasn't been mowed in ages and is quite tall, I nearly lost my dog, not to mention my disc in it. Hole 8 calms down but the stream and the grass are still problems and there is a bit of a tree element around the basket too. Hole 9 however is just a long straight shot after a comparatively trick course.

So spreadout 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 20, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has good signage and 2 sets of pins for each hole. There are gravel tees and bag hangers at every hole. The course is litter free and well kept. Also there is a decent mix of short and moderate length holes as well as decent elevation change.
Here are my hole observations to the yellow pins:
1-uphill shot, soccer field to the left
2-downhill shot with moderate length and tree lined off of the box
3-downhill shot that crosses a stream
4-uphill shot with the left side being wide open
5-downhill shot, slight dog leg right
6-uphill shot with trees upon approach
7-straight shot that has a gap to hit
8-trees on the left, stream behind the basket
9-uphill, left side is open

Cons:

This course is too spread out. It plays around a soccer field and a baseball field so long walks between holes and to your car after finishing your round are very lengthy.
Example would be 1's basket to 2's tee, 2's basket to 3's tee, 8's basket to 9's tee and 9's basket to the parking lot.
With the above stated some holes might not be playable because of parked cars or people in lawn chairs etc. if there were games in progress.
Wind could be a factor during your round.
4's tee holds water in the box.
There aren't any amenities here like restrooms, benches, playgrounds etc.

Other Thoughts:

This course does provide a decent challenge on a few of its holes. It is a good playing course and if you are in the area check it out. Would be fun to play after classes as its close to the campus.
Not a must play course but it does provide you with the opportunity to get out and play so thats a plus in my book.

Not bad, but could be better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

For a 9 hole course, it has great distance, elevation change, and use of trees. Extremely clean (as you would expect on a college campus), and relatively easy to navigate once you find hole 1. Excellent signage

Cons:

Tee pads are small and uneven gravel. Layout was not really thought out very well, especially on 8 and 9 - you throw down a hill and then walk back past the tee to 9's pad. Some trash cans, but no benches.

Other Thoughts:

Could easily be a 12-18 hole course. Most holes have a 300' + walk between pads. Would love to have seen this course designed like that. I would have given it at least a 3.0 to 3.5 if that were the case.

Good little course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 25, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great use of the land that they have. Most, if not all, holes are around 350' but there are 2 placements per hole. Little bit of water comes into play. Good use of elevation changes and trees. It may be short, but it ain't easy! Plus there's plenty of room to park and multiple soccer and baseball fields to warm up or just practice shots on. Oh, and the signage is in the same style as a lot of other KC area courses, so it's very good. It's the best 9 hole that I've ever played and is close to home. I could only wish for 9 more! (oh, and a practice basket)

Cons:

Gravel teepads were washed out and very rutted. This could be remedied fairly easily. No practice basket. The course plays around several fields which I have seen being used for baseball or soccer practice. It might be tough to play on a gameday, although I admit that I haven't tried. Flow is pretty weird until you've played it a few times. There are walks between holes that are longer than the holes themselves to begin with and then 7, 8 and 9 are all wonky. 1 bench at hole #1, but no others anywhere around unless you count the bleachers by the big baseball field, which may or may not be locked. No water fountains, either, so bring some water in with you.

Other Thoughts:

A very good little course on a beautiful, well-kept college campus. I see security driving around every time I've been there, so that's good or bad depending on your point of view. 1 and 2 play up to the frat houses, so no wonder why they're always around. Any spots down by the creek or even the flat spots close to it on 3, 6, and 7-8 were swamps. Like flooded wet, but there had been an uncommon amount of rain recently. It's not always that way, so I can't say it's a con. With a little redesign and/or playing back around the field where 9 ends, there could easily be another 9 put in. Maybe that's in the long-term plan? I dunno, but I would work on filling in the teepads with concrete before all else. There's a fairly busy little road that the course winds around, so while security is cool with dogs being out there and off leash, definitely keep an eye out when you play by the road.

Beautiful piece of land. Nice tee areas. Really well placed greens! Two pin placements on every hole.

Cons:

Not a lot of variety in hole lengths. Walk between some holes.

Other Thoughts:

Liberty finally has a course! Liked holes 1, 2, 5, and especially 6. I think pin locations are the best thing about the course as there is trouble possible on every approach. For 350+ throwers it will be more fun but for my 270ft arm it is pretty much a bunch of threes. I would rate higher but for the walks. After 8 you turn around and walk all the way back past the pad to 9. I will play the course again for sure.

Nice tee signs.
