Nice Course in a City Park Setting 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Concrete Tee Pads
-Dual Tees for a few holes
-Signage is OK (DGA "Peel n Stick")
-Baskets are good
-Good mix of long/short, open/somewhat wooded
-Park Upkeep was good, nice old growth trees to work around
-Kept away from most other park activities
-Good 9 hole loop

Cons:

-Pars a bit light on a couple of holes (624' Par 3?)
-#16, 17 18 play near walking path and shelter (#16)
-Not much for benches or trashcans

Other Thoughts:

Riverview Park DGC is located in a large city park along the Iowa River on the north end of Marshalltown, IA. A bit of a sprawling layout, but follows fairly well (Bit of a walk from #10 basket to #11 tee across the road, back over the road to #16 tee, map is helpful.) There is a bit of a drainage ditch for water on #1, 2, 3 and again on 18), but worked around easily (especially with the rec tee on 18) and did not notice a smell from previous reviews. #4 play 624' which is a tad long for a Par 3, even for a pro. #7, 12 and 15 all play over 450' at the same Par 3. Flow was good, the trees weren't too punitive to shots and there were good lines for most of the holes. Fix some pars, add some benches and trashcans, maybe improve the signage would all add to the rating here. I enjoyed my round here and would play again.

***UPDATE***
Played this a couple of days before the derecho in Iowa and I know Marshalltown got hit hard, so course condition may be a factor until cleanup can happen here!

Decent with potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Good tee pads
+ Good signs
+ Several holes that could be really cool water holes (were just cess pool, mud bog holes when we played).
+ Facilities near by (bathrooms, water)
+ Good separation from other activities at the park (pavillions, tennis, trails, etc.)
+ Plenty of parking, easy to find.

Cons:

- Most holes have stagnant water either in low drainage areas or some type of apparently out of service man-made waterway. It may have been bad timing on our part, but the mud and bugs put a serious damper on the experience.
- Mosquitos, gnats and flies in droves!

Other Thoughts:

If the city went after the drainage issue and resolved whatever is up with the man-made waterway thing (bog, swamp, cess pool thing), the bugs would go way down and there would be several holes with some really cool water features. As it is, you feel like you're playing next to plugged up drainage ditches most of the time.

Bring a roller and some water discs 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Nice variety of shot shapes and distances
- Good natural obstacles and hazards
- Concrete tees
- Dual tees on some holes

Cons:

- Some 'tweener' holes
- Pretty flat
- Some conflict with other park facilities

Other Thoughts:

The short version: It's a pretty nice, challenging course in a beautiful, well-maintained park.

The tees and signage are good and the baskets catch well. There's enough variation in shot shapes that it doesn't favor righties over lefties or vice-versa. There is a reasonable variation of hole distances. However, there are a couple of holes that are of a distance that is just a little long for a par 3, yet too short to be a legitimate par 4. These holes are at least fairly wide open, so a player can really crank off the tee and not have to worry about hitting a tight line.

There is water on the course, which comes into play on 3 holes, which are done very well. It's a reasonably challenging carry to the pin, but there is plenty of room to safely bail out to the side. True risk-reward, which is quite fun. There are also quite a few low-ceiling shots, so one would do well to have a roller shot in their arsenal, or an accurate low air shot.

I have two gripes with the course. One is the tee shot on the longest hole, #6. It would be nice to have a more defined fairway, or preferred route, off the tee. You're expected to get a big drive off, but you're faced with a tight-ish stand of trees with a low ceiling to boot, making this less of a test of skill than a game of chance.

The other problem I have is the holes that are in close proximity to the walking paths that run through the park. When the weather is nice and the park is busy with visitors, there can be the danger of hitting a pedestrian with an errant shot.

Overall, the course has a few minor annoyances, but the level of fun outweighs the cons.

Solid Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 9, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has a variety of length with each hole. Good to try out multiple discs.

For the most part, the signage helps you figure out where you're going.

Water hazards are fun and add a little bit of flare to the course.

The 9th hole takes you back to the parking lot.

Cons:

Two of the cages (I believe 4 and 6) were stolen. Sad that people do that.

Not much elevation change.

Some times you have to walk a distance to the next tee off.

In the middle of a park so you have to watch out for kids playing.

There are no trash cans besides at the start. I brought a drink with me thinking I could toss it wherever and ended up having to keep it the whole time.

Other Thoughts:

I would definitely try this again but not really worth coming from out of town just to play it. I enjoy the holes with large trees to contend with and have to plan your shot.

Riverview Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

1. Long course with a large variety of shots
2. Requires skill to hit lines between tree's and avoid the water hazards.
3. Very well maintained. Tee Pads, signs, and baskets are all in fantastic shape.
4. A nice mix of long and short shots

Cons:

1. Safety, this park is crowded. There was a net wrapped between some tree's for a kick ball game that we had to shoot around and on the opposite side a soccer match being held around a basket. They let us throw threw.
2. Basekts are not numbered and there are a few that are close together so it can be a judgement call on a few holes where you are throwing.
3. A few holes are very close to the road and a few play areas.
4. The water on the course is basically sewage, avoid it at all costs.

Other Thoughts:

This park is in fantastic shape and its obvious somebody takes a lot of pride in its upkeep. There are several other activities to try out while your there. Also a play area if you have kids.
The water hazzard on holes 1 and 2 looks like a mop wielding toxic avenger might pop out of it.

My daily course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 20, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nicely taken care of course. Challenging holes with water hazards and low lying trees. Spreads across a big area of the park. Some holes give you the option of two different tees.

Cons:

Completely flat. Water hazards get very annoying. Water smells and looks like sewage. Do not drink on this course, cops have a tendency to drive through often and ride their bikes around on busy days; drinking in a public park is a $150 fine and you will be required to appear in court (I know this from experience).

Other Thoughts:

Lots of the baskets are off to the right. Watch out for people playing Sepak takraw (kick volleyball) and volleyball. They used to set their net up right between the tee and the basket making holes unplayable.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 14, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice park, seems well kept. Water on a few holes adds difficulty. Good mix of open and wooded holes, mature and young trees make for tight gaps and tough lines. A few holes have a couple different tee pads to add some difficulty.

Cons:

Virtually no change in elevation, and a few of the holes get a bit redundant. The flow isn't the best, but it's also not the worst I've seen. The water can get pretty stinky at certain times of the year. As noted in a previous review, there needs to be a bridge near the pin on hole 1 to save players from having to walk clear back around if they don't make it to the other side of the water.

Other Thoughts:

Riverview is a solid course, but nothing to write home about.

Many different types of shots needed.

Course is very well maintained with lots of trees.

Cons:

Not much. Not a lot of elevation change but this can also be looked at as a pro if you are physically challenged.

could use a bridge by hole #1 if you happen to throw right of the water.
