above average school course, below average college course

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 26, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

A plus to have another place to play in the Brainerd lakes area, seems that courses are limited. Some fun shots and great Northwoods pines to force a line. Easy to navigate and no chance to lose your disc. I loved the custom plasma cut (?) number plates affixed to the top of each basket (which caught fine).

Cons:

I cannot imagine playing this when class is in session. Turned over or overly aggressive shots risk hitting parked cars on several holes. Possibility of hitting campus buildings on a few others. Hole 1 tee is just a few feet from a door. Course plays in a reverse C shape. So when you finish the straightest path back to your car is to cut back through the course, around the structures. Watch out for drives on hole 4 (as you round the corner of the building). If the course is busy get out to the road and hike that back. Rubber tee pads. They were fine this day, but that is my last favorite tee surface.

Other Thoughts:

I played this on a Friday evening when the campus was pretty empty so any safety concerns were null... My favorite moment of the round was when I was hiking back to my car at 530ish and a college employee walking to her car says "Looks like I'm the last one to leave" (lot was empty except for her Subaru).

CLC Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+Nice baskets, homemade or a basic DGC model. They work well and have a big number on top of them.
+Some reasonable elevation change as the course is perched upon the Mississippi River bluffs.
+Holes are fitting for a college campus, not too long. This also helps with not hitting pedestrians, cars, buildings, etc if you can not throw a max speed driver.
+Ace opportunities on most holes.
+Course is fairly open but there are mature trees on most holes.
+Well designed for what they had to work with both safety and fun-wise.

Cons:

-Natural pads, they were in fine shape but concrete is always better.
-Minimal signage. Just a numbered post. Could use a bit more info.
-Kind of hard to find your way around sometimes. Definitely look at the map on here. Nothing too crazy but due to the choppy campus nature of the land, there are a few walks to the next tee.
-9 isn't close to 1 and will be a decent walk when you are done. I safari's my way back to 1 instead of just walk.
-Like many campus courses, there are possibilities of hitting things. They did a great job of designing the course to never throw directly towards buildings but you never know where an errant driver could end up. Especially on a windy day.
-Overall, a pretty easy course. It isn't going to challenge most players. Good for getting college students into the game and giving them something to do between classes.
-Could have a lot of foot traffic during class time. Be aware of the time of year/day when you are going to play. I played in summer with no issue.

Other Thoughts:

+A solid course in Brainerd. I think that it's a bit highly rated at 3+ discs but most experienced baggers will find this to be a suitable 9 holer.
+This area is beautiful and there are a lot of big, wooded properties around. It is time for someone to come in and build a big 18+ holer. Lots of low quality to average quality 9ers around here.

CLC Disc Golf Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Easy course for the beginner player. Mostly open with some obstacles on a few holes. A good classic course to go when aren't able to go anywhere else.

Cons:

One of the holes has a garage next to it and sometimes discs will end up there based on how you throw. Throw low on hole 3

Other Thoughts:

Great course for a group of friends to play, or if you want to practice for a bigger course, this is the place to do it.

Ol' Favorite 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 22, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I love this course. It has a great variety - distance holes, wooded holes. I like the width of the throwing lanes, which allow for different styles of play to have success. It's also challenging enough that you'll never master it. The College grounds crew do a fabulous job maintaining the course year round.

Cons:

There's space for 9 more holes but they haven't been created yet.

Other Thoughts:

Highly recommend going here with a bunch of friends and frolf it up.

Beginner friendly 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Nice baskets.
-Well maintained grass/debris cleanup
-Good distance/par markers
-Good variation of open/tree shots, and slight elevation changes.
-Not typically very busy in the afternoons

Cons:

-A few holes (4,5,7,8) throw near roads or parking lots, this isn't a huge concern for people with disc control, but as a course that is shorter/easier for beginners, it poses risks of hitting the road, and/or cars.
-Very short holes overall, not a lot of technical skill required, just basic disc fade knowledge.
-Is likely busy during the school day when classes are running.
-A few of the tees are less than desirable even for dirt. The ones that come to mind are 7 (covered in tree roots, not really any solid footing) and 8 (just a giant pit of sand)

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is a short course, and great for beginners, and probably isn't bad for intermediate players to challenge themselves to get under par on every hole. Nothing to drive just to come check out, but if you're in the area it's definitely worth checking out

A place of beginner learning 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 20, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Beginner friendly
-Nice setting (Central Lakes College, located on the Mississippi River which lends some of its ancient river banks to the course)
-Not as much disc golf traffic as Lum Park in Brainerd
-Intriguing topography changes (which are not offered elsewhere in the Brainerd lakes area)

Cons:

-Busy with students during school year
-Avoidable but devastating hazards, including buildings, roads, traffic, and pedestrians
-Not a significant source of a challenge for experienced players

Other Thoughts:

A great addition to the Brainerd area, Central Lakes College disc golf course offers convenience for many area disc golfers. Central Lakes College is a nice setting for a course, but it represents many of the challenges that this type of course faces.

Beginner player experience - 1/1 for interesting short holes and long holes which are not too challenging
Intermediate player experience - 0.3/1 for being a pitch-and-putt
Advanced player experience - 0.1/1 for having little to offer
Setting - 0.7/1 for being very convenient for neighborhood disc golfers and comfortable place to enjoy a few rounds
Overall course experience - 1/1 for being a break from the crowds and having some nice looks at the basket for beginners

Total = 3.1/5

Another mediocre Brainerd course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 17, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice baskets, minimal traffic, nice mowed grass.

Cons:

Not very technical, lots of risky parking lot/ disc into traffic shots, too easy, too short, college students walking around getting in the way.

Other Thoughts:

Course designer Mark Englund did a nice job for the space he was given but this course isn't an improvement over the areas other lack luster courses. Overall this course is just too boring, no pretty lines, not very challenging.

Pros:

Nice baskets.
Has nice topography.
Not too challenging.

Cons:

Near some buildings/roof-tops that make me a bit nervous.
Could see how playing might be difficult during busy student times.
Have to throw across a driveway.

Other Thoughts:

Fun course that appears well maintained.
