Generous Fairways

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 26, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

A bomber layout that's very Typical of disc golf on bolf courses.

-Maintenance: Immaculate grass. The baskets are also in very good shape.

-Bolf Integration: Just like Colina Park, this course integrates frolf and bolf well. The layouts share tees and fairways, so there isn't the dangerous and confusion rite of crossing fairways and deciding who should be throwing.

-Rip It: Wide open with plenty of long holes to sling the disc with abandon. I found myself going with the widest rim driver on a bunch of these holes that, at least for a player of my distance, didn't really require accuracy off the tee.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Minimal shaping, with distance being key on most of these. An average hole utilizes one key tree and perhaps two additional peripheral trees to define the shape. More often than not, it's a simple hyzer or anhyzer. A few holes have baskets perched on hills for extra action. There are a couple of shots that stand out though: hole (4) is slightly downhill and the basket is guarded by trees with low ceiling, hole (7) is a fun downhill bomb with obstacles on both sides of the large fairway, and (9) deals with cart paths, OB left, and mid-fairway trees. Also included are some birdie opportunities for 300' or lesser throwers.

Cons:

-Interest: Or lack thereof. I wouldn't consider any of these holes to be technical. Throw far or throw farther. As noted, there are obstacles, but very few that are difficult to avoid.

-Drainage: I've been told this was a historically rainy winter, so perhaps this isn't valid. Nonetheless, when I played here, several holes had marshy sections and two had lots of standing water. Hole (18) was so bad they shortened it temporarily.

-Basket Location Finding: with no tee signs, it can be difficult to locate baskets. On a couple of long holes, I aimed for the wrong basket on my first drives.

-Traffic: My sense after playing here was that the bolf course constantly busy. Early afternoon on a Thursday, I played through at least 5 slow golf groups. Obviously a problem everywhere in San Diego, not just here.

-Amenities: Passable, but slightly worse than average. Tees are natural, but giant. Solid, numbered DISCatchers. No disc golf-specific signage. Definitely no extra frills, other than of course the club house for golfers.

-Fee: $20 here was about as much as I've ever paid for a round. Only other time I remember doing so, it was at Bucksnort, which is substantially more interesting than here.

Other Thoughts:

Mission Bay is a fun opportunity to throw lots of drivers. It is not an opportunity to face challengingly shaped fairways. Keep in mind that you'll pay a lot to share with golfers, but it could be worth it on a mild day where the sun will shine on the manicured fields.

Disc Golf on a Public Golf Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 18, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Fun, very well maintained golf course with baskets (and foot golf holes!) placed near the greens. Use red (short) golf tees for disc golf

+ Wide open fairways with a few trees, and the basket placements take advantage of the trees as much as possible

+ Nothing very memorable in the way of holes, but a few nicely-placed baskets: #16 is up on a hill under the biggest tree on the course, and #18 is up on a hill next to the green

+ The course felt pretty long for the pars - a lot of the par 3's were 375+ and a few over 400'

+ Playing with the bunkers and greens as OB added challenge that wouldn't otherwise be there because of the open landscaping

+ The scorecard they give you at the starter's desk is beautiful - and indispensable (see cons below)

Cons:

- Pars don't match. Some of the holes differ between the scorecard, the tee signs and uDisc. I used the scorecard as the ultimate authority

- Some of the baskets aren't where the tee signs say they are. Look around. You might even have to walk forward and check them out a few times the first time you play. This is especially helpful on a few of the middle holes in the front 9 - it's easy to confuse baskets

Other Thoughts:

~ Basket #1 is way out by the green (it's a 765' par 4 disc hole). The basket you see on the right is basket #2. I found out after I had successfully thrown a beautiful upshot to it. Don't make the same mistake!

~ The afternoon I played was pretty windy. I don't know if that's a regular feature, but it added challenge to the round.

~ Even though there are lights on this course, parts of it get very dark. Tees and greens are well-lit, but the fairways aren't. Keep a careful eye on your throws. I started in the daylight, but played much of the back 9 after sunset. I had trouble locating the tee on #17, and the long fairway of #18 is really dark

~ This was my first time playing on a ball golf course - and on a foot golf course. Players of both those games were on the course around me. I was amazed how much faster my pace of play was (but I was a single, and the others were in groups). Playing though ball golfers was pretty easy. I'd tee off after them, and be finished while they were still lining up putts

~ The staff and players I met at this course were all uniformly friendly. It's a nice place to play a round on a ball golf course

Enjoyable San Diego Course But A Little Pricey! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 11, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mission Bay is a nice parks and recreation golf course. They've added disc golf and footi golf to help with revenues. Playing on a early Friday morning, I was the only disc golfer around. The golfers were all cordial and many were impressed with my drives and rollers. Imagine what they would think about a 1000 rated player!

The course is mostly flat with just a few small hills, some scattered trees off the fairways, non-existent rough and just one non-hazardous water hazard. The Discatchers are thoughtfully stationed all around greens but are sometimes a little confusing to spot off the tee. I threw towards the wrong basket once or twice. There's usually a tree or two or three guarding the basket but like most most disc courses on golf courses Mission Bay is mostly open. You won't need to use many different shots although it was fun to roll on the short, nicely mowed grass. The course is probably about average distance with three holes under 300' and four longer holes with # 18 stretching out to 912' .

Signature hole! None stood out as really memorable but I don't remember any hole feeling like a filler hole, either. Nice design!

Cons:

I'm a little concerned with the cost. $10 for nine holes or $18 for 18 holes is steep and $10.50 for each person in the cart. I think I read on their website that it was $10 just for someone to ride along and watch! This all smells of price gouging to me. What no $25 bag fee or $30 to pick which seat in the cart you want? And not even a chintzy little bag of pretzels!

Golf course open! Not much shot shaping needed here. Mostly a point and shoot course.

Other Thoughts:

Mission Bay doesn't feature the tropical beauty that Colina Park has but it's certainly lovely and very well maintained. It's a pleasant option compared to many of our more unkept disc courses. Those of you with the 450' drives will enjoy the four monster holes. And a rec player such as myself, will not feel overwhelmed here.

There is a league that plays here on Sundays as well as the annual Ice Bowl Tournament.

With my normal prejudices against disc golf courses on golf courses, I came here fully expecting to not enjoy myself but walked away pleasantly surprised. This combined with Morley Field and Colina Park gives you San Diego players some excellent options.

Fun layout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 24, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course follows the layout of the ball golf course, but as this is a shorter golf course it makes for reasonable lengths for disc golf. There are plenty of reachable holes off the tee, with a few longer shots that let you stretch out your arm and throw a big drive. Water comes into play on one hole, with a tricky pin placement by a pond. The golf greens and sand traps also add some risk of OB on drives and around some of the baskets, I really enjoyed several of the pin placements by these hazards.

There are a few minor elevation changes, and they're used pretty well to add challenge and excitement around a few of the pins. A pin on a mound and a couple next to small hills offer rollaway potential for missed putts or upshots. The trees are pretty sparse, but there are enough for some protected pins and to force a little line shaping off the tee. The tees are on the golf tee areas, so they're nice grass and plenty level. The baskets used are portable temp baskets, but all are generally in good shape and catch fine. Playing at night under the lights is a fun bonus here.

Cons:

Despite creative use of the available obstacles, this course still plays pretty open. You'll score better if you have a variety of shots in your bag, but you can get away with a limited set of line shaping skills. Some of the baskets are very close to other fairways and tees, so there's definitely some safety concerns with a full tournament.

The course is temporary so there is no signage, navigation can be a little tricky and distances are deceiving so it's helpful to have someone who's played the course before on your card. The course is only available once each year, so it's not all that accessible to most players.

Other Thoughts:

Beginners will find the course a bit long, but there isn't much chance of lost discs and not a ton of penalty for inaccurate drives on most holes. More experienced players will find some great challenges out here, and some nice risk/reward decisions with OB in play if you go for birdies. I definitely recommend playing in the ice bowl event if you get the chance, it's a cool tournament on a fun course.
