A forgotten 9….or 10? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 30, 2021 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

~ Great signs and clever hole names, but it's a mostly wooded course that looks like it hasn't been groomed or maintained since opening in 2013. The first part of the course plays around a large open field before going into deep woods, and the lack of upkeep really reduces the playability of the later holes

~ Natural tees, and 8 DisCatcher baskets (holes 4 and 9 share a basket). The Hole #10 mentioned in old reviews might not exist anymore

~ Lack of upkeep aside, the only bad design is the first hole: 349' par 3 with a very sharp left turn less than 100' off the tee. So - throw something that will turn more than 90 degrees almost immediately and then go 250' to the green (the pictures on this site give a good idea of the layout)

~ There might be a good and fun little local course here if you play in the winter when the brush and poison ivy is down. A reasonable quick round or a beer league if you're not going to a nearby 18 like Parma, Basil or Sweden. Somebody loved this course enough to invest in very good signage and quality baskets, but it feels largely forgotten now as nature has encroached. The single DGCR rating since 2016 is 2.5 - and that's a lot closer to its existing state than early reviews. But most of the year it's a frustrating overgrown course, a bagging stop, or a practice field with some baskets

Poisonivyland! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Combination of open and tight technical wooded, long and short length holes.

Cons:

Plenty of places to lose a disc, many holes you can't see the basket (3 is the worst), high weeds on holes 1, 3, 4 & 9. Poorly marked dirt tees, even though I've been here a few times I have to look online at the course map to find them. Poison ivy is everywhere after 2, 9 is the worst with large knee high sections on the right before the basket.

Other Thoughts:

I agree with other reviewer that 9 needs to go, use hole 10 as 9. Wear pants and closed shoes if you're allergic to poison ivy.

Great local spot 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Layout is very clear for most holes now. Pretty well maintained this season. Nice mix of backhand/forehand regardless of dominant arm. Nice and challenging, but can be easy to throw under par for big arms. Touch players will enjoy the wooded holes.

Packs a lot of fast run practice, and gives a great chance to test out discs in a diverse environment. Also, its quiet, not many people hangout there.

Cons:

Hole 10 not clear where Tee is. Some holes have slightly challenging terrain in the wooded portions. Spry players will enjoy the additional challenge of danger in the rough, but its not ideal for those that are mobility challenged.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 9 needs to go. Its a great 9 hole course, just using hole 10 as hole 9. I don't throw back to hole 4, its kind of a waste. Currently, since there is no hole 10 tee that I can find, I follow the path after 8 and keep to the right, you will see an opening with a concrete platform that I use as the hole "9" pad. I throw from there to the disc catcher that is to the right of the pond, right near the parking lot. Sometimes I throw right from the catcher at modified hole 9, to hole 1's catcher, and call that a par 4, 811fter hole 10, and run the course again obviously skipping 1.

Pros:

A good mix of open and wooded shots.
Challenging.

Cons:

The parking lot is very secluded and I was worried about my car getting vandalized the whole time I was there. I was the only one playing. Some punks came in the lot and did donuts in the gravel. A car would pull in, sit there a bit and then leave. It happened numerous times.
I never did find where Hole 8 started so I just made my own tee.
I never did understand how hole 9 was supposed to work so I ended up throwing from Tee 9 to basket 4

Other Thoughts:

On hole 3 I ended up in the water twice but there are plenty of long sticks to retrieve your disc.
I really didn't care for hole 6. Maybe I'm old but the drop offs to the left and right of the entire hole are too much for me so I just threw a 6 on that and played it safe.
I enjoyed the course overall.

decent start 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-mix of open and wooded holes
-some interesting basket locations
-new baskets, tee signs (no map)
-water hazards on 1-3, 9

Cons:

-tees not clearly defined
-some fairways not clearly defined
-wooded fairways need clearing, lots of ivy and brush
-the brush off the fairway on hole 9 obscures the fact that there is water danger all over
-navigation is a little tricky: easy to skip hole 3 (tee 4 visible from basket 2), trails haven't been established in the woods between holes

Other Thoughts:

The Woodlands has a good mix of open and wooded holes. Surprisingly, the open holes are probably the better holes on the course. Hole 1 has a big drive out of the woods (large window) and across a field but the pin is just past a small creek. You could easily land in the OB if you're trying to hit the green from the tee, good risk/reward. You must cross the same creek on hole 2 and an accurate, open drive sets up the deuce putt on a dogleg left on hole 4.

The wooded holes are a bit more rough. Hole 3 has a cool tunnel along the side of the creek to a basket tucked off to the right. It's a fun shot but the creek leave the whole area muddy. Hole 5-8 are in the same wooded area and are fun but repetitive. They all have elevated baskets that increase the challenge on each hole but feel gimmicky all together. The woods are tight but there is not a lot of thick brush but it would be nice if the fairways could be cleared of all the ivy, etc that covers the ground through this whole area. It would help define the fairways.

With some tweaks and regular maintenance this could be a pretty good 9 holer. Right now it leaves a little to be desired but is a good option if you live nearby. It's worth checking out at some point if you are into playing new courses but most people will prefer the many better options around Rochester.

Solid 9 holer 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 7, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

A variety of shots, some elevation play, and risk vs. reward opportunities
While this is a multiuse park, it is not crowded and bystanders are not an issue.
Some memorable holes, nothing spectacular. Holes 5, 6, and 7 are good on their own merits, but get gimmicky as a set.

Cons:

Tees needed maps for blind holes and course could use some navigational aides. Hole 3 is easy to skip, and the tee for 8 is between baskets 5 and 7.
At hole 5 the basket is precariously close to a drop off, so your putting needs to be on. This was a nice touch until they repeated the same gimmick on holes 6, 7, and 8. It was as if the designer looked for drop offs and put half the baskets directly infront of them and built the hole to cater to the basket, especially on hole 8. It was as if the fairway was secondary to the basket being on a drop off for the fourth hole in a row.
Tee pads are not clearly defined yet
Lakebodom said it best, the baskets look like they were put up hastily. The chains are tangled up, especially hole 9 basket.
Hole 9 fairway is knee to waste deep foiliage waiting to eat your disc before you leave.
Bathrooms locked (monday 2pm)

Other Thoughts:

The course was a decent 9 holer, but needs more work and some of the problems from original instalation can be fixed. Instead of cute names for each hole, a small map of the hole would be much more useful.

Pros:

Interesting basket placement
challenging shots
mix of open and wooded holes
good signage; distances and pars

Cons:

no direction to next tee
no fairways on hole 5; 7; and 8
garbage on # 3 fairway and on # 8

Other Thoughts:

hole # 3 could be a really nice but short hole, but the mess on the fairway reminds me of the opening scene to "Book of Eli". The maintainers have really improved tee signs and the dirt bikers have improved the fairways. The more that I throw the Woodlands, the more I like it.

Pros:

Much more challenging layout than most 9-hole courses.

Pretty even mix of long, wide open holes, and short, technical wooded holes.

Shaded picnic table area close to the parking lot.

A number of soccer fields surround the course so there is plenty of room for field practice to warm up.

Close in proximity to many other courses in the area. Great location for a warm up round or a quick 9 in between rounds.

Cons:

Still very new. Tees on some holes have not been clearly defined (1, 4, 9)

Signage is to come shortly, however none is present currently.

Baskets appear to be installed in haste since many have tangled chains.

Make sure to have access to the course map the first time you play. Navigation can be a bit of a challenge.

A few of the holes (1, 2, 4) play alongside a few if the athletic fields in the park. Much of the course will be unplayable during practice and games.

The walk from hole 9 back to the parking lot is a bit long. Not much of a con other than having a basket to warm up on is quite a ways away.

Other Thoughts:

All things considered, this is definitely one of the better 9-hole courses I've played.

Hole 1: Tees through a short tunnel into a soccer field. Best line is a Righty-Hyzer/Lefty Turnover. There is a swail about 20 feet in front of the basket, so water comes into play on the approach.

Hole 2: Wide open hole with the swail from Hole 1 running down the center.

Hole 3: Tight tunnel shot with water running down the entire left side. Basket is on the right side, So a straight forehand for a Right-handed player is probably best from the tee.

Hole 4: Wide open hole with woods to the left and a soccer field to the right. Basket is located to the left.

Hole 5: Tees through a very narrow uphill tunnel. There is a bunch of reeds growing out of the ground after the uphill area that may stop your disc. Basket is to the right and sits on a death putt green sloping down the right.

Hole 6: No clearly defined fairway. This hole is a true poke n' hope the whole way through. Basket is to the right and sits on another death putt green with steep slopes running down the left and right.

Hole 7: A little more open than the two previous wooded holes. Straight to slight Hyzer line is probably best for Right-handed players. Basket is to the left and sits on yet another death putt green with steep slopes in front of and behind the basket.

Hole 8: Tees through a very narrow tunnel. Approach is heavily guarded with trees. Basket sits on another death putt green that slopes in front of and behind the basket.

Hole 9: Tees down a service road. there is a pond to the left of the fairway. Basket is to the left.

Layout as is is very challenging. definitely designed with a more experienced player in mind. Shorter tees are rumored in the future for less experienced players.

Pros:

a nice long feeling nine. great new baskets seems it will be a great nine twice the distance as sawyer park and plays nicer even tho its brand new. lots of potential

Cons:

work in progress so the course needs clearing of trees and brush, orange flags that mark the tees are tuff to find. tee box for one is very spongy mulch and tee three is too small to throw a decent shot if there are soccer games going on plan on playing a different course

Other Thoughts:

it s a work in progress so not much to say till its complete
