Hole mix and match combos- There are 2 tee pads and 2 baskets at each hole. It's only a nine hole course, but you can turn it into 18 several different ways. The tee pads are numbered 1-18 which takes you through the course playing long-to-long, then short-to-short. You could also play both tees to long baskets, both tees to short baskets, short tees to both baskets, or long tees to both baskets. You could play 18 holes here several different times before you play the same round twice, which is nice.

The park- The park itself is very nice. Lots of picnic tables spread throughout, different trails that aren't a part of the course, open sandy areas, areas with lots of shade. Bring lunch out with you and you could easily spend a few hours playing and just enjoying the park.

The tees- Tee pads are all numbered and have hole maps. Almost, if not every, tee pad has a broom or brush to clear sand from the tees, which I thought was a nice touch. The signs and maps do come in handy because there must have been a recent redesign that hasn't caught up to Udisc yet. There are also benches at almost every tee pad, and trashcans throughout the course.

The holes- Decent variety for only a 9 hole course. Some of the short-to-shorts were under 200 feet, while some of the long-to-longs were over 400, and everything in between was represented. I mostly used a RHBH, but I did break out the forehand on a couple of holes. I drove with putters, fairways, and distance a time or two, so this course does let you use several different types of shots. Some holes are wide open, some are lightly wooded, some baskets are elevated, some holes turn right, some are straight, some turn left. You'll use most of your shots if you play all 18.

Layout- the layout was borderline nonsensical. I got lost looking for the second tee, threw from the wrong tee once, and got spun around several different times. The fairways also constantly cross each other. I played early in the morning on a weekday and was the only person on the course, but if there are more than one or two groups, things could get a little hectic and potentially dangerous. I can definitely see a situation where someone is moving to take an approach and gets drilled by a drive, and it wouldn't have to be too errant a shot to happen.

There are 2 baskets that are also right next to picnic tables. The long basket on hole 6 is completely surrounded by picnic tables. Be careful on those drives to make sure anyone who happens to be around the basket is looking out for discs.

No elevation change at all. That's more a product of being on the NC shore than anything else, but I do like to mix in hills, elevation gains, drops, etc.

The tee pads are rubber, and while they do have brooms and brushes to clear sand away, that isn't always effective. I shanked a couple of drives because I slipped on the tee pad from some sand.

The maps at each tee pad are also not always super helpful. There are some hidden baskets, and the maps are the most generic-looking renderings possible. I found myself at least twice throwing a drive and hoping that by the time I got there I would see the basket.

This is a situation where the park is nicer than the course. The course isn't terrible, but the layout is tough to follow and could definitely lead to trouble where the fairways cross each other. I'd recommend playing early in the day, like I did, so you can avoid potential back ups or groups on crisscrossing holes. If you want to get in a quick 9 holes, this is a solid option. If you want to take your time and play 18, just be prepared to walk the course twice-- I logged just about 3 miles playing long-to-long then short-to-short.

If you're in Oak Island or Southport on vacation like me, definitely check this course out for something different than what you're used to, the sandy floor is a fun challenge.

Cougar Country Disc Golf Course sits about 20 minutes off of Hwy 17 at the Boiling Springs Community Center grounds . Pull in past the community center and park around back . I parker near the playground when it was empty , and by the time I was done playing , I had to have day care workers move kids so I could leave . There is a Port O Let near the first hole . I am going to grade the course as 18 holes .
The Equipment - There are 2 rubber tee pads per hole , far enough apart and set up enough to make one more difficult than the other . There are brooms at some of the tee pads to sweep off excess sand and needles . There are pretty good informative wood tee signs at each tee location . The basket setup is pretty nice , There are yellow banded DISCatchers for the shorter locations and blue banded DISCatchers for the longer positions . Some benches were present here , and a putting basket near the first tee .
The Landscape - The course was clean and no real debris in the fairways . It looks like the local club stays on top of it , well . The grass was mowed in the spots where there was some . The course plays on the fringes of some trees . Not always open , but not tight either , until you get to #6 ,7 and 8 .The course employs part park-style and part woods style sections for the holes .
The fairways are covered with a sand mix , and some pine needles in most of the areas . The course is Flat . There is a playground that's close to hole #8 , but it shouldn't be a factor .
Course Appearance/Atmosphere - The course is average in appearance . Nothing sticks out in my mind . This should be a typical kind of beach area course . The atmosphere was light when I played . There was a group of about 8 young guys around 17-20 with an older guy that was playing near me the whole time and having a blast . Having 2 tees and 2 baskets to mix and match can make it fair for everyone involved .
The Highlights - The holes were okay when I played . Some of the basket placements were in some interesting spots . I think #4 blue basket was tucked in to the right of the fairway , but you saw the yellow basket from the tee . #9 and 18 , which were located across the street , had the blue tee tucked into the right of the fairway in a clump of trees ( 285' ).
Signature Hole - the most scenic ( some will call gimmicky ) and fun hole was #8 . only 251' long , it is a tight midrange drive bending towards an elevated basket wedged into a twisting tree . Kind of fun trying to play the putt .
Disc Risk - pretty low here . You would have to catch it in a tree . The overgrowth isn't thick enough to swallow your disc for good .
The Time - It took me 55 minutes to play the course . It will take a foursome a 1:45 to 1:50 minutes to do all 18 .

#1 Safety - 2 things . The multiple tee pads and baskets can crisscross in fairways and if crowded can lead to someone having a bad day . Also , there looks to be a day care during the week at the rec center . These active kids go crazy when let out to play . They are supposed to be confined to the playground away from the course , but you know how kids are . Be a little cautious if the kids are out .
#2 - Navigation - not bad in most spots , but the baskets and pin locations + dual pads can trip you up . An online map or kiosk would help . The course is a little confined to a small area .
#3 intermediates on up will give this course a beat down . It will still be competitive enough for locals on down .
#4 9 or 18 . There are still going to be people claiming it is a 9 hole course in disguise . Sure , there are courses like this all over Florida that still claim a 9 hole course , but just enjoy the play .

This course looks to be improving ever since it was constructed (2013) . Now , 2 baskets 2 tees , differing locations instead of the same exact drive . I can qualify it as an 18 hole course , but barely . I walked the grounds a little after I played my round . They might have enough area to expand , which would take some of the pressure off of the middle or the woods part of the course . I tried looking on the local club pages to see if tournaments or doubles were being played and when , but I couldn't find it . If vacationing here , or trying the course as a local , you may want to contact someone on the page so you don't waste a trip out here . I think that this was a much needed course to expand disc golf interest and give alternatives to vacationers from the Wilmington are all the way down to North Myrtle Beach .
My Recommendation - Good intro course , and good course for newbies , dates or families . The dual tee/basket setup can accommodate all , and can track progression . Locals should have a lot of fun , here . Again , you can play with players of lesser or greater skill at the same time minus the embarrassment of not reaching pars . Intermediates and up will not be over impressed , but still can work on their game . Vacationers and travelers will like this as an alternative to another whole day at the beach . Course Collectors will like that there are 2 other 9 hole course not far away and that this is a fast play and 20 minutes off of Hwy 17 . A solid enough course to come off of the highway and Play !!

To start off, Cougar Country has to be one of the most badass names for a course in the world, and although I didn't see a cougar, I still enjoyed the cool name.

Course wise, it was a pretty cool course for someone who isn't used to the courses down south, as they do seem to differ from my regular program back in Pennsylvania. The land was a sand/pine needle mixture, which is definitely different than the grassy roots I'm used to.

The course is well maintained, with no problem finding any discs, or really finding anything, as navigation was easy as well. Not much to complain about from that standpoint.

Weaving through the small wooded area they had, as well as the open areas gave a nice mix of open and wooded holes for the course.

Two teepads per hole was a pleasant addition, providing a long and short look to the baskets. The tee signs were helpful, and the baskets were in great shape as well.

To start, this isn't an 18 hole course with 9 baskets. It is a 9hole course with two tees. They don't differ nearly enough, and I can see a huge problem arising if you wanted a large group of people to share this course.

Completely flat, not that it's controllable, but it leaves a boring taste in your mouth.

The rubber tee pads would be slippery when wet, but they are also slippery when sandy. Not really a great tee pad tp have in this environment, as they get a lot of rain too.

A pretty easy course, as an intermediate level player, shooting 9 down on 9 is a definite possibility. Not that that's a bad thing, but it's not a good thing really either.

A solid beginner course, a nice nine-holer, but not a wowza type course. I like playing here, but I really wish the whole area got a real 5 star caliber course, because they have an overall great community.

Nice, 9 hole, 18 tee layout on this side of the Cape Fear River from Wilmington. Nice DISCatchers and tee signs on every hole.
Rubber mats for the tees and brooms on several holes that really help with the sandy soil.
I believe they have two separate tees for each hole. The ones I found were separated from each other enough, to make this feel like an 18 hole course when played through twice.
Mostly wooded, pine tree course but a couple of open holes or lightly wooded.
Unique, elevated, in a tree basket position for #8. It's located right behind the community building, if you want to just check that out!

The rubber tee mats look like the kind that can get slick when wet, but usually enough room beside them to tee from.
Really no big Cons with this course, not a huge piece of land to work with (and no elevation), a nice layout.

It looks like there is a local club that is active with this course. The signage is good, there is a screened port-a-john at the first tee and everything is in good shape.
The Cape Fear River really divides this part of NC from the Wilmington courses, including Castle Hayne. So if you are staying at the Brunswick Co beaches and don't want to drive up to CH, this is a good alternative.

Longer then the other course nearby...fun shot shapes. Gives even the newest player a good experience. Thick fescue on a few of the holes makes it hard to find disc's if you get off the fairway.q

After accidentally dropping in on a league day at Castle Hayne and witnessing at least eighty people preparing to tee off, (We just came back at the end of the day) I thought the rest of the area courses would be empty. It was still early when I got to Arrowhead but there were already groups backed up on one. While I was at Joe Eakes, something like seven or eight other groups were on the course. At that point I figured, there can't be any people at Cougar Country. But there were. Man, do Wilmington people love their disc golf. It was a nice Saturday in March but all five of the courses being fairly crowded? This is an area that could probably use another course.

So, Cougar Country. It's a pretty sweet course for a niner. It's not extremely tough but it has some solid distance with a couple of holes topping four-hundred feet. The terrain is interesting with the mix of sand and pines. There's also a solid variety of holes, with some requiring specific lines of flight and others allowing bombs. The additional tees aren't different enough for me to consider them separate holes but they provide additional variety. The first eight holes are all solid. There may not be a standout hole but if there's a signature hole, it's 4 I think that tees off from a slightly elevated ridge jest behind a small creek.

If there were nine more like the existing nine, this would be a 3.0 course for me. As it is, it's one of those local courses that you can play it a lot without growing tired of it. You can play nine, eighteen, twenty-seven. It's not one that I would suggest going out of your way to play, but if your passing by, it'll provide a good round regardless of how many you want to play.

Well, hole 9. The barbed-wire fence is dangerously close on the right. You can treat that type of area like water but to me, it doesn't play the same. It's not something I'm comfortable playing around. And 9 is fairly straightforward, uninteresting hole otherwise. I don't see why it was necessary to put it by itself over there. This is mostly a course that you can attack so it's a shame that after eight holes of going after pins and air it out, there is one that makes you want to play overly cautious.

Other than that, it's extremely flat and not overly challenging. It wouldn't be a bad course for beginners, and it's certainly targeted at players a notch above that, but well-traveled players won't find much to get excited about.

Rubber mat tees are great when it's dry. Baskets are in good shape. Good mix of holes, requiring use of all discs. Fun beach environment with lots of sand!

Wish they had 9 more real holes! Otherwise, the course was a lot of fun. A touch repetitive w/o much elevation, but they did well with the land. The rubber mats could probably get slippery if theyre wet at all, but when we played they were great.

Love the attention to detail, like the brooms at each tee pad. Apparently they are making room for an extra 9 holes--in the meantime, the alternate tees make for a fun quasi-18 holes.

- Very nice park arranged around a community center. There's plenty to do besides disc golf, so if you bring the kids they won't be bored.

- Tees are well-marked with benches at each hole. Pads are rubber but not too awful slick even when wet or sandy. New Discatcher Pro baskets. #8 is even extremely elevated, which adds another dimension of challenge.

- Friendly locals who encourage new players. The Brunswick County DG Club also host several events throughout the month. Really a great group of people.

- Great amenities in the community center right in the parking lot near hole #1. Restrooms, water fountains, and even a place where you can purchase extra plastic if you shank one in the woods and don't want to go home with a light bag. Not too big of a selection (Innova only) and the prices are a skosh higher than what you might pay online or at DG store, but having the option to buy extra discs is definitely a plus.

- Great use of land. There are clearly defined woodland fairways that provide enough of a lane to make several different shots possible, while still providing enough of a hazard to give you pause and make sure to make your shot count. The course offers short ace-runs and very well-guarded pins to test your accuracy, as well as long bombers where you can showcase your power (or lack thereof).

- The course pretty much mandates a wide variety of shots. Hyzers, anhyzers, flicks, thumbers, rollers....you might find yourself having to use every tool in your toolbox to tame this course.

- Although it's a 9-basket course, the alternate tees provided to make it a full 18 really do give the front a vastly different feel and perspective from the back. The front 9 are longer than the back and even though you're playing the same pins, the tee locations and distance variations make the two feel like you're playing entirely different holes.

- No elevation changes. This is, however, coastal Carolina, so you can't really fault the course for that.

- Ticks! Even in January! Watch yourself.

- Outside the fairways the woods will eat your disc. The underbrush is so overgrown that you will be hard pressed to even be able to walk through it without a machete.

- All par threes. With the alternate pin locations it seems like they could have squeezed a few par fours into the mix. For example, #4 is about 75 feet longer on the front than in the back and with the wind whipping through that open field it can prove difficult for a newbie (or me) to get the disc all the way to the green.

- Navigating this course could prove bewildering for the first-time player throwing alone. Some pins are a little walk from the next tee, and without a guide you could find yourself lost very easily. #7 comes to mind here. The alternate tees are great and really do make the course feel different from front to back, but the locations to the alternate tees could be improved to make it less confusing.

- No topless Hooters girls frolicking along the #8 fairway.

All in all, Cougar Country is a good, challenging course. The designers did their homework to make it tough enough for seasoned players, but easy enough for those new to the game. Add to that the amenities provided, the frequent events offered, and the friendly locals who are always up for a game and this course is a winner. It's a little drive from Wilmington and doesn't hold a candle to Castle Hayne, but if you're looking for a nice change from the city you could do a lot worse than Cougar Country. Definitely worth checking out.

Nice mix of long and short holes, and some unexpected challenges. Alternate pin placements on a few holes that I actually liked and made the course a bit more challenging. Brooms provided at each tee pad to sweep off the sand that can accumulate on the rubber tee pads (sometimes it's the little things that make a difference). Ample parking adjacent to the first hole. Dedicated locals who are committed to maintaining and improving the course.

A wee bit confusing to follow at first, until you figure out how the layout is supposed to work. Signage is good, but it took us 9 holes or so to get our bearings. The rubber tee pads are nice, but concrete would be better. Also, I'm wondering why the course is designed to play the long holes first and the short holes last. Would be nice to have a couple of short holes at the beginning of the course to get your arm loosened up.

My first time playing the course I was lucky to be able to fall in with a large group of locals who were out there for an impromptu round of doubles. It really helped me figure out the course being able to play with some guys who play it all the time. They were all very friendly and offered suggestions on other local courses. All in all, a good experience. There are talks of expanding this course into a true 18 hole course. Should be really nice.

-Good length for having only 9 holes. 2900' feet for 9 holes vs 3200 feet for 18 at Arrowhead in Wilmington. Nice driving opportunities.
-2 tees for each hole already. Most courses add 2nd tees as an afterthought later on down the line
-Signage directing you to nex-t on almost every hole.
-Benches already set up on some holes. Garbage cans as well.
-Signage telling you where the course is, some places neglect that important fact for new courses.

-Hole 6 is a mess. I know they had a note that it wasn't finished. We just don't know how it's going to be fixed. The rest of the holes are on nice land. This one seems to be built entirely on marshland. There is a noticeable give when you step on the entire hole. Broken twigs were laid down for extra support, but ouch if you are in sandals. The basket is also at a dead end of a blind dog leg. So be careful coming back out, as some one else may be throwing.
-Tee pads are a very cheap rubber mat. Very easy to slip on, especially with all the sand around. Be careful. Hopefully they are placeholders until some more funds come in.
-Hole 9 is also placed on the other side of the street away from every other hole. A bit odd, since there is definitely more land available. The fence to the left of it is scary too. Barbed wire and no eay way under to retrieve a disc.

-I commend the initiative already brought forth by the local community. There is a sign in sheet, so they can show how popular the course is. That way they can fight for more $. Make sure to sign it.
-It's not a negative, but there isn't a lot of tree cover, so the sun can beat down on you if it's hot out.
-Check it out if you are around. I don't see myself going out of my way there, but a stop there and Oak Island a short distance away isn't out of the question once in a while.

- Blue ones add much more difficulty
- A few opportunities to let it rip
- Also some more technical shots but not short ones.
- Baskets are top notch
- There is a nice community center and nature walk on the property

Course was a lot of fun to play. Played the whites first then the Blues had loads of fun on both.

Nice community center and nature area.

You can tell time and a lot of work are going into the course and it is looking really good so far.

Not the most challenging but has enough teeth to keep you honest.

Good course for beginners and experienced players.

Great variety of holes for only a 9 holer. Two tees per hole and it appears they extra pin positions to move the baskets around and make more variety.

Some short wooded holes and long air it holes. Used a variety of shots today and found all lanes and fairways to be very fair.

Cannot make it here often but I look forward to coming back.

Great signage on course to the next tees that is also color coded and makes navigation easy.

No practice basket or warm up area. Hope they can add that down the road.

Wish it was more than 9 holes---ok I am being greedy but it was fun and I wanted more holes.

At current 6 is under construction and in rough shape. playable but a mess. In all fairness there is a sign on the tee pole warning of this before you play the hole. That should only be a temporary con.

Tee signs are not up yet so no distance listed or par ratings. I can tell the signs are coming though because the poles are in.

It was super quiet and peaceful.

Bring water it gets hot here since a few holes are in the open.

Not the most challenging course for experienced players but no cupcake either.

Someone will eventually complain about the lack of elevation on the course get over it it is the coast it is flat here. I didn't miss the elevation part at all.
