Runs in the Hills 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course plays as something of a figure eight through a long, well groomed valley, utilizing the surrounding hills, landscaped growth and sparse trees to maximum effect. Natural tees are ground marked and moved regularly to reduce wear.

The primary challenge of this course is playing to baskets often on hills where one may discover 'the Thorncliffe Roll' on bad putting days. Holes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8 all can familiarize you with this term, but the relative openess of the layout usually allows a well thought out approach to account for this. Dense Nanking Cherry bush mandos - among other types of flora - provide a deep but navigable buffer between the park and surrounding neighborhood for the most part and feature delicious berries in season. Other under-filled copse areas as mandos are used to both provide challenge and to help eliminate crossover of air traffic.

Although making the most of it's vertical assets, the course is easily accessible with parking along various roads around the park or en masse at the Thorncliffe Greenview community association off it's North end. The hall of the latter offering a pub with pool, darts, bowling, washrooms and well priced refreshments adds to the appeal.

Although unmarked, many locals are familiar with the 'back 9', usually extending existing holes and occasionally changing the line entirely for a similar, but longer look at the theme of the standard 9.

Cons:

The dense bush perimeter can at times screen park walkers being seen from tee #3. Hole #6 runs parallel to an alley (mando) and back yards which can see the occasional disc veer into dangerous territory.

There is no signage and tees/baskets may not be instantly correlate-able if one is not familiar with the layout. Hopeful if the community accepts this lovely course over time pads and signs may be erected.

Other Thoughts:

At areas where disc golf and the community are more likely to come into contact (basket #1, tee #3, tee #5, basket #8, tee #9), it is advised to keep music lower and language clean to pro-actively maintain the goodwill of local residents.

Being relatively new, this course is not widely known by the general public and enjoys a relatively under-populated appeal as an alternative to burgeoning Baker park.

Nice use of a nice park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 20, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A very nice 9 hole course that just barely fits into the park, but doesn't feel too shortened by it. A decent amount of vertical to make things interesting, and good use of a smattering of groves of trees around the baskets to make things as technical as possible. It's a very well maintained park and the community centre near the parking lot actually has a pub with drinks/food for after your game.

I also like that there are a lot of bushes surrounding the course so as to create a nice buffer between the fairways and the urban hazards OB. If you lose a disc into these bushes they're compact at the ground level so it's relatively easy to find your disc. I really hate the use of fences/roads as hazards on courses so this is really welcome here.

Overall the park really isolates you from the urban surroundings and is very peaceful and scenic, so it has a great atmosphere.

Cons:

Really the biggest con is that it's only 9 holes, and leaves you wanting more.

It is slightly sparse in terms of trees to provide more technical shots, even though every hole has at least some cover. There is occasional traffic through the course, but nothing out of the ordinary for most disc golf courses.

The natural tees are still in good shape, but as this course increases in popularity you can tell that will change. Hopefully the CDGC moves the tees each year so we don't end up with dirt holes like the Forest Lawn course.

Other Thoughts:

A great course in a nice park, definitely worth playing for every Calgarian and worthwhile if you're from out of town and in the NE quadrant. Bring a map as the tee markers in the ground will be hard to spot unless you know where they are (although looking for the worn down grass now really helps).

Hills in a Park setting 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 5, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course makes good use of a small space. It plays up and down a valley using the hills nicely for elevation changes up and down as well as tricky hillside greens. Nice park setting and a good amount of trees make for a challenging 9 hole course.

Cons:

Course is still in its early days so the natural tees are definitely a con. The park isn't all that wide which makes for a few choke points that could get tricky with high traffic.

Other Thoughts:

Nice 9 hole course to add to the mix in Calgary. Not a destination course really, but of the 2 9 hole options in town, this one has the edge in my opinion.
