Just added an additional 18 to the course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 9, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Surprised on my second visit that they added an additional 18 holes very recently. Got to play 36 holes in a reasonable amount of time. There are some easy to tricky holes. Good mix on additon of holes.

Cons:

Since the additional holes were so new, there were no teeboxes for scattered new 18. Tricky to locate new teeboxes and baskets. Also unsure if neww 18 is permanant or just for upcoming tournament. Unmowed areas have you walking through nettles (Wear pants/jeans).

Other Thoughts:

I would play again.

Decent Variety and Distance 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 1, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*Well maintained
*Quiet
*Friendly Players
*Back nine has good variety
*A few VERY wide open holes to rip it
*Bathrooms and water fountains nearby
*Green grass
*Multiple pin positions
*Deccent variabliity in hole distance (150-450ft)

Cons:

*Front half of course fairly bland, and holes are stacked on each other
*Pay $5 to park
*Pin positions are not that different from each other
*Sometimes muddy on front 9

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice, well maintained course. I prefer 'fast grass,' so if you are used to straw, you wont be getting any extra distance when you touch down. There are some wide open holes on the back nine, the front nine except for hole one are all arranged closely and you will be throwing back toward the previous hole's pad a few times. My favorite part is the last 5-7 holes, some nice positioning and dense-ish, but well thought out designs. It has never been packed when I have played there, so you can play unabated. For first time players, request a map, as it can be tough to navigate, the front entrance gate has maps. The water features are really on the fringe, so no direct affect on play. This is a shared public park with playgrounds and paddleboat rentals, so keep an eye for pedestrians, but they wont really be in your direct path when you throw.

Maintenance and Signage 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 16, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Decent tee signs
- Concrete Tees for every hole
- Baskets seem to be in decent shape
- Most of the area was well kept and mowed
- Minimal blinds
- Begin/end at same location

Cons:

First time players should expect the following:
- No overall map
- Pay station is cash only and makes limited change (seriously, cash only?!?!)
- Unclear starting point (first time)
- Unclear Tee signs/maps
- Little to no visibility to most baskets
- Visible baskets have unclear markers at range
- No flags or wind indicators
- No consistent indication of next tee
- Some fairway/basket overlap
- Unaware non-golfing bystanders
- Possibly aggressive geese
- Massive, unclear gap between front and back 9
- Unclear/disconnected first tee from second tee area (closer to pin 18 for some reason)
- Dangerous proximity to major road on back 9 (pin locations)
- Unclear pay station/entry fee (may not even have to pay sometimes)
- Short, narrow tees

Other Thoughts:

In general this course wasn't "bad" and I found the wind and proximity to the main road and water hazards challenging but also unnecessarily hazardous. Sings upon entry were non-existent for disc golf and nothing was posted on the main boards. There is a sign board near the #9 pin that has DG info on it but also no indication of where to go to play the back 9. I just happen to see Tee #10 when I was driving around trying to figure out where Tee #1 was. Basically wasting a bunch of time getting out of the car and checking out each visible tee until I found Tee #1 and then more time wasted figuring out that Tee #2 was across the road from Pin #1. It just didn't need to be so unclear. The designer should have kept the front and back 9 close to each other and, if separating them, kept the beginning and end of each 9 together (if possible). Though someone said the parking was close to #1 tee, I disagree. It wasn't far but not clearly close like most other, well thought out courses. The Course layout could use improvement and a link between the front and back 9. It would be great to utilize the park space between the two with more holes or a better layout in general. I recommend a refresh of the course design. I don't think most general players would be disappointed by playing this course. First timers might find the layout confusing. I find the cost (had I had to pay it when I played) to be very high for what you get if you're just going for the disc golf course. I probably won't return if I have to pay to play this course. Please add more holes and a layout refresh and it might be worth paying for.

Pros:

Big, well maintained park. It does have baskets, so i guess thats a plus in stocton. does have t-pads, i guess. Easy to park near hole 1

Cons:

t-pads, are weird, only aquatic park have i seen anything simular to some. Local non-discgolfers, do not seem to care that this is also a discgolf park. They picnic in front of the baskets, on fairways, and sometimes on the teepads. The local people who fish the lake, sometimes use baskets as BBQ grills.

Other Thoughts:

$5 parking fee, to have people picnic in the fairways, not worth it. have been there 4 times, and everytime, multiple non-discgolfers camped on holes, twice had local fishermen using baskets near lake for BBQ, coals on aluminum foil, and fish on wires hanging from chains. Course I have refused to return to

Pros:

+Nicely maintained park and grounds
+No rif raf
+Mulitiple pin locations
+Pleanty of parking very close to hole 1
+Other park goers stayed out of the disk golf area
+Some holes with challenging distances

Cons:

-Although the t-pads are concrete, many are too small for my taste. Some too short, others too narrow.
-Front 9 is very simplistic
-Park entry fee of $6
-Very, very flat
-Misleading signage
-Didn't find a practace basket(s) area

Other Thoughts:

Overall I thouroghly enjoyed my day at Oak Grove Regonal. After the front 9 the holes became more challenging. It is a grassy course with scattered trees(mostley oaks). The last 7 or so holes play toward the main road and an open field. This open field allows the wind to gain momentum and did affect play. I didn't list it as a negetive because I feel thats just all part of the game. I will defenetly play here again.

Nice course in Stockton 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 1, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is one of the most under rated courses in the Sacramento Valley. There are cement tee pads with DGA baskets that are in good condition. There are signs at every hole that has a map with pin location distances. There are multiple pin locations for every hole and they can greatly change the hole play depending on the pins location. The course is well maintained by the city parks grounds keepers and there are trash cans at almost every hole. Course maps can be obtained when you first enter and pay your access fee. Never that crowded.

Cons:

Pay to play (5$). Some tee pads are pretty small or in blocks that are not that even. Goose poo everywhere. Wind in this area can be killer and will ruin your round (their club is called the windjammers).

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course to play if you are driving through or are relatively close to the area. I find that it is one of the more under rated courses around but this is probably due to the fact that most people don't go to Stockton. This course really can be broken down as two courses because they are very different. The front nine is more of a warm up with a lot more birdie opportunities than the back nine. The tee pads are not as uniform on the front nine than the back nine. The back section will have you throwing much further and will leave you much more exposed to the wind. This can make your seemingly great round turn into a nightmare. So bring wind tolerant discs and prepare to play a great course.

Sweet DG in the OG 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Country club disc golfing in a serene grove of mature oak trees. Superclean course with nicely mowed fairways. Many mature trees forcing hyser/anhyser drives. Options to go over the top with tomohawks too. Trees were big, but not too grabby, which was nice. I really appreciated the perks of it being a paid course with the upkeep and solitude without unwanted scragglers. The flow of the course is very intuitive, and the tee pads are nice.

Cons:

Flat. Constant whizzing of traffic on Eight Mile Rd adjacent to the park entrance. Pretty wide open, so not too many burn spots.

Other Thoughts:

This course reminded me of Sunset in Las Vegas, only WAY better. I was very pleasantly surprised and impressed with just how pretty and well taken care of this entire park is, let alone this sweet DG course.

Dead or alive, you're coming with me! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a beautiful pay ($5 to get in to the park) to play. The course has sparse trees, water, OB, Mandos, and some open holes. The concrete tee pads are adequate, but the tee signs are excellent. They have all the right info on them. The pin placements are pretty good with a couple holes having manmade structures created for them. The park is big and has lots of great parking. They look as though they are constantly mowing this place. There are restrooms and drinking fountains at a few different points in the course and plenty of trash cans. When entering the park, let the guard know you are going to play and he will give you a map to use.

Cons:

You will need that map. It is not that easy to find you way around even with it. I actually even had to ask someone form the grounds crew for help once (ahh the shame!) This is a flat course and the holes are not too difficult. The hole-length variety is not really there. Most of the holes are between 250 and 350 feet. You will likely use the same discs for many of the holes here.

Other Thoughts:

The Fun Factor here was average. There were a few really fun holes, a few boring holes, and a bunch of average holes. I still felt it was worth the entry fee. I think this is a good course. It is a little better than the average course, because the terrain does seem to change and it is really well maintained.

Cons:

Other Thoughts:

This course is just what the doctor ordered for me as a newcomer to the sport. It is very forgiving and I did not stress about losing a disc. The front 9 builds your confidence and skills with short holes that were within the par realm for me! The back 9 was long enough for me to practice with my driver and skip right to the putter! A very nicely maintained course with very helpful locals and the map given was great. Will be back for sure while my skillset improves!

Nice course, as someone else said, park, cross the bridge and start at 2. NOTE: The sign for 3 is missing but the tee pad close to the 2 basket is it. It plays the same direction 2 did. I think it was 15 maybe (by the entrance) has a number 1 on the basket. Fun course, will return

Green Grass = Summer Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 23, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

All the bonus features of a disc-course such as -
Green and cut grass!
Bathrooms, water fountains, parking, interstate access, beautiful valley oaks, NO poison oak

Cons:

Variety of shots required

Several wide open drives

Few technical baskets

The non-golfers and wind are really not that bad, but check the weather or go in the morning; delta winds are strongest in the evening.

I despise the geese droppings, although I hear it's good for grip (use at your own risk)... And they were not here first, they're suppose to migrate, they're Canadian geese!

Other Thoughts:

Ask for a map when entering, albeit you don't really need it.

This is my local course. I like Hogan better, but it's frustrating to play in the summer/fall with all the stickers and tall dead grass. I think this is a good course, the extra .5 is for all the bonus amenities of this course minus the 5$ fee. If your passing through on I-5 I would recommend playing it, especially in the summer. The back 9 is far from the front 9.

Small Tees but Big Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 6, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The setting is really nice: Mature Oak trees on a flat as a pancake plain. The grass is mowed, there are water hazards, and great facilities that make playing here a joy. The shots are pretty straightforward but still can be challenging. Hole 12 was the hardest to birdie in my opinion, since you'd need to crush a RHBH anhyzer over everything to get near the well placed pin. I got it within 45 both times during last weekend's tourney but missed both putts. Easy access off I-5, plenty of parking, $5 fee keeps the riff-raff out.

Cons:

They could use a tee and signage upgrade here. Some tees are fine but others, especially for tourney play, are too short, with muddy run ups this time of year (late winter/early spring), or are sloped downward, making it difficult to calibrate your shot. The signs are pretty old and could be updated, but for the most part the course is straightforward.

Other Thoughts:

A great course for beginners or pros, Oak Grove has great valley scenery and is an easy walk for players of all abilities. It's convenient location off the freeway makes it a must play for anyone on the I-5 corridor in the Sacto to Modesto area. Not too far from the bay to hit up either

A tale of two 9’s 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 31, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

• Very easy to find and navigate
• Beautiful park with additional activities (e.g. boat rentals, fishing, nature center, walking trails, picnic areas, etc....) and facilities (e.g. restrooms, water fountains, etc...)
• Warm-up areas everywhere

Cons:

• $5 is a bit much to park but you can see where the money's going
• Goose poop - Yea, what're going to do really? They were probably here first.
• Holes 2-8 are very congested so keep your head on a swivel
• People, roads, cars, and houses, can be in play on a couple holes.
• Tees are a little small

Other Thoughts:

Tips
• Hole 16's basket is marked "13" but it's not that big a deal as there's no other hole around to confuse you.
• There's a strip mall on the opposite side of I5 from the park that has food, gas, stores, etc...
• You can get a map from the ranger when you come in but it's almost unnecessary.
• I've read the tips that suggest parking near #10 and starting your round there for a shorter walk, but my opinion is that no matter where you park, the walk is not going to take long. I would actually advise starting on #1 because 1-9 are a nice warm-up to the shots needed on 10-18.
• The alternate pins were in place for 6 and 7 and that brings the water in play. I advise caution as I watched one guy put his disk in the lake and we almost did a few times.

Random Thoughts:
I call this a tale of two 9's because the front nine is considerably different than the back nine. I wonder if they were installed at different times. The front nine is in the main area of the park and basically criss-crosses an open field with a few trees here and there to make things interesting and have you try different shots, but the back nine is in the more woodsy area of the park and is far more spaced out and a bit more challenging. What's nice about this course is you can always see the basket and it's driveable but there are usually a couple shots you can use to get there. I would imagine that the more advanced golfer would do quite well here, and even I had a great first round (14 pars, 3 bogeys (2 inexcusable ones), and 1 birdie) but I enjoyed the course so much I ended up playing another 36 holes that day and 27 the next. Yes, my shoulder is really unhappy with me. I also almost got my first ace on two different occasions. Quite the confidence booster. Overall, I can comfortably say I parred every hole at some point and birdied about 5. For reference: I currently drive about 280-290 and primarily throw RHBH.

Bottom Line: While the advanced player may be bored here, I think this is a fun pitch/drive and putt course where you can work on various shots without too much fear of losing a disc. It's flat and the holes aren't real long so I would consider this a great place to improve your game, and also a fantastic place to introduce someone to the game without anyone getting too frustrated. The park itself is also surprisingly nice considering where it is so you can plan a nice day around it.

Hard to lose your discs. Scenic. Easy to find your way around.

Cons:

Other Thoughts:

Good place to just let 'er rip. Overall, there aren't too many obstacles, for better or worse. If you can drive 300 feet and put with some accuracy, you will have a lot of birdy opportunities. I felt like it would be easier for RHBH dominant players. I throw RHBH and could throw this way for almost every drive. There were a couple where I went for turnover shots. Went on a Saturday and it wasn't very crowded, but seemed to have a few regulars. Also, it is very convenient from I5, which means a lot of people from around the state could hit it in a few hours. Could be a good place to take inexperienced players because they won't be frustrated by a ton of elevation/obstacles.

The only true course in Stockton 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 17, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- cement tees
- pretty good pin locations, dual pins (not sure how often they move them)
- okay signs
- you can get a course map at the booth you pay at when you drive in, this is very helpful for navigation if it's your first time here
- small small amounts of elevation and minor water hazards at least add to the course looking nice
- the only course in Stockton that's worth going to

Cons:

- $5 park entrance fee is not worth it unless you're with a group of friends
- the layout is a little spotty. Hole 7 throws directly at where basket 3 and tee 4 are, so if you're on any of those three holes, watch for other golfers or someone could easily get hurt.
- there is a very long walk between hole 9 and hole 10 that can be confusing if you don't grab the course map
- the cement tees are very small so you can't take much run-up

Other Thoughts:

There are essentially two separate loops that make up this course. Holes 2-9, and Holes 10-18 and Hole 1. When you park, head directly over the bridge across the street and start at Hole 2. Hole 1 tees off by 18's basket, so you can just play it at the end because the basket is right by the parking lot. It's just more efficient that way.

Oak Grove Regional Park is really the only true course in Stockton, so if you're passing through and want to get out of the car and play, this course is worth it. It's not too long, but just enough to provide a fun time and a challenge. I'd recommend it for beginners to the lower end of advanced players.
