McCall DGC-Fun technical challenge. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Challenges/Pros:
• Tightly positioned pine trees and moderate sized bushes increase difficulty on most holes. Additionally, there is a wetland during the spring on the right side of #1/#10 and #2/#11 that you will want to avoid.
• A relatively short course but quite technical with short to intermediate length tunnel shots at many holes. I have played in winter but with the powder snow you'll want to think about having spotters...
• Great mixture of holes favoring forehand and others backhand.
• Ample opportunities for birdies with accurate shots and an ace opportunity on #4.
• Signage is good from the tee boxes with hole length accompanied by a useful diagram of the typical approach.
• Unusual for a DG course will be the occasional small airplane buzzing overhead on their landing approach.

Cons:

Opportunities for Improvement:
• Fair condition natural tee pads that need work and would greatly benefit from replacement by cement pads.
• The path to the next tee is usually identifiable by a visible footpath but is otherwise not always adequately marked.
• The course may get a bit crowded if very many people are playing with only 9 baskets for the 18 tee boxes. I would note however that the two times I played there were only a few players.

Other Thoughts:

Perspective: Intermediate level, Master's 60+ player with low to intermediate arm strength.

Course Details/Info:
• Recently expanded from a 9 to an 18-hole course that plays through a moderate wooded area south of the local high school and north of the airport. However, there are only 9 pins with 18 different tee boxes.
• A paved bike path borders the western edge of the wooded course.
• There are some parking areas in a dirt lot close to the bike path.
• Organized in a counter-clockwise fashion.

Summary of Rating/Play:
• Recommend playing all holes as Par 3's rather than as marked with the possible exception of #9/18 which is longer plus its pathway is tortuous and wooded.
• Very appropriate for beginning to intermediate adults or younger players particularly if one wants to work on tight fairway drives, approach shots, and putting.
• Also good for Masters 50-60+ if they enjoy more technical rather than long bomber courses.
• In general, I would rate this as a "3" course for the above groups but big bombers may not enjoy it as much.

Short & Technical 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 23, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Baskets caught well
- Pay attention to map and you will be able to follow it just fine
- Plays through a lovely little wooded area right in town
- Its a short and technical with hole 9 being the only one to even attempt a large drive

Cons:

- Natural tee pads
- Holes #1 & #9 don't really have a fairway and are very overgrown

Other Thoughts:

- This is a fun course that you can get a few rounds in. Great to work on your mid range and driving putter shots
- There is a "back 9" which is a series of alt tees for every hole. I ran into a local that helped show them to me. You just need to look around and you'll find the number signs
- Lots of mosquitoes so don't forget the bug spray
- Bring colorful discs

Nice 9 Hole Course In Town! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

The McCall 9 plays in cut through a small, undeveloped city park. It's like a small wilderness course stuck in a small park in the middle of the city.
It has a nice course sign at the start. The tee pads are natural. They're rough in places and could use some work. The tee signs are nice little wooden signs which won't hold up to the vandals. # 1 sign is already broke. The baskets are Discatchers with the yellow band. They have the hole # on the side which helps. The listed pars are elementary type pars such as # 3 being a 242 Par 4.
The hole distances are long enough through this thick forest that you can get confused as to which basket you're throwing to. Navigation is a little confusing in places. Maybe when more people have played and routes between baskets and tees have become more established, it might be easier to follow.

Cons:

Right now much of the course has the feel of a wilderness area and not so much of that of a city park. As the course gets more play, brush will get broke down and paths will become more visible.
The tee pads need work.
Signs are pretty but susceptible to vandalism.
Agree that this course should have some "Next hole" signs.
Seasonal course as McCall gets lots of snow.

Other Thoughts:

The McCall area has a nice variety of courses with Tamarack and Bogus Basin not that far away. Makes for a pretty great little disc golf excursion and then there's the lake here in McCall. But hotel prices are not cheap! It's a touristy area and they charge for it.

A Hike Through the Woods 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

• Good use of trees to create obstacles. Accurate shots required.
• Relatively easy to navigate.
• Good place to post a low score if you can hit your lines. Several birdie/ace holes.
• Beautiful wooded area away from the crowds that can descend on this little tourist town at times.

Cons:

• Too many short holes for most golfers.
• Dirt tee pads.
• Needs some "Next Tee" signs on some holes. (I believe EVERY course should have these!)
• McCall has deep snow 6 months per year, so this course will only be playable May-October.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed my time on this course. My round felt like a nice hike through the woods with the bonus of chucking some plastic. Long bombers who like 400'+ shots won't get much out of this course, but weak-armed guys like me should like it. McCall is a beautiful little town in a gorgeous mountain setting. For anyone who thinks Idaho is an ugly place because all you've seen is the unattractive views along I-84, a trip to McCall should change your mind. There are some other courses in the area (Brundage Mountain, Cascade Sports Park, and Tamarack Resort) so you could plan a little Idaho mountain DG getaway if you're in the area.

could be better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 10, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course is set in the middle of town so its easliy accessible by foot or bicycle, its a fairly family friendly course, and its just nice to see a public basket course right in McCall.

Cons:

the teepads need some work, the fairways need a little maintainence and some more routes need to be added. Also, it would be nice to have alternate teepads since the course can be played in about 20 minutes with hardly any challenges except for hole 9, which is fairly hard if you dont have a huge arm.

Other Thoughts:

I think the course has the potential to be better with a little redesigning. It just needs more space to make it better. If you are in McCall for the weekend or whatever, it would be worth it to check it out.
