Short and.... short

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 29, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Concrete tees
-Baskets OK
-Signage good
-Short, designed for beginners
-Some use of elevation

Cons:

-Busy park
-Walking paths in play on #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #8 and #9
-Short, designed for beginners
-#3 and #6 could have errant shots in the small creek

Other Thoughts:

Lenexa DGC plays in Sar-Ko-Par Park in the NW part of Lenexa, KS. A beginner course that plays around basketball, tennis courts, and walking trails in the eastern part of the park. #1 begins near the basketball court. A drop down into a valley for #2 ends up in a grove of trees for a nice finish. #3 plays toward the creek. #4 - #6 play on the other side of the creek. #7 and #8 throw in the same direction, not far from one another. #9 finished with a tee tucked in the trees just off the walking path. This is a quick play. It is definitely designed for the beginner with all but one hole under 200' and that one is if the basket is in the right place. There is some interest with the elevation and trees in play. My main concern here is safety, especially from the walking paths. We had to hold up a few times to not bean anyone. This is a busy park. For a beginner, it would show a few good technical aspects of the game without killing someone for the walk or the long drives. I can see its use there. More experienced player can utilize it for upshot and putting work. Maybe use it to warm up or show someone the game. Still many more to explore in the KC area and I'd skip this one on another run in the area.

So-Kalled-Par 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 3, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lenexa DGC at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park is the perfect beginners course. It has everything you might possibly want for a newbie to have a fun time and absolutely nothing more. This is the place to get your first birdie, your first ace, or your first under par round. Amenities are nice, being in a well-kept up park, and cement tee pads, tee signs, and pretty straight forward navigation.

Every hole has something interesting to it. There are a decent amount of hills, scattered trees (especially on 4-6), and a couple of low ceilings. There is hardly any thick woods, so there's not much lost disc potential. It's possible on 3-8 due to a creek, but the danger is pretty low.

Most holes offer multiple lines to the basket, despite how short they are. This makes the course a little more fair for different shot types, especially for people who only throw BH or FH. The hills offer some decent variety, mainly 2 and 9.

Even for intermediate players, this place is a birdie fest, and scores of -9 quickly become possible. You can also make a back nine for yourself, which uses the existing tees and baskets but adds mandos to force different lines around certain trees.

Cons:

Okay, the holes are really short, and that prevents this course from being very exciting. While that's fine for this course, having a little more distance would always spice things up a bit. The shortness also means some of the trees don't do anything. Especially on hole 6, you can completely miss your line but still have a putt because all of the trees are near the basket. Also, hole 1 is pretty boring; the only tree is beside the basket, and there's a path behind. This may have been intentional, starting with a simple hole, but the result wasn't great.

Safety can be a concern. Walking paths are somewhat in play on around half the holes, and also tennis courts on hole 3. In most cases, it's easy to see if anyone is coming, but the exception is hole 8, which has a path near the basket and trees that block your vision. One of the pins is across the path, which makes things even worse. While smart players will do fine, a busy day could make rounds take annoying long.

The multiple pin positions don't really add anything to this course. They bring some more paths into play on some holes, and the pins are pretty close to each other anyway. While it technically gives the course more variety, it makes the tee signs a little more confusing.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of the few courses that I don't think has any room for improvement. It's made for beginners, and it fulfills that role perfectly. While it won't offer much challenge for anyone better, it is a good warmup course and would be a course I would love to have within walking distance of where I live. 15 minute rounds are very feasible.

If you call the paths OB, several holes become instantly harder. This is good as it adds some extra challenge while not burdening the beginners.

Overall, I like this course even though it isn't very grandiose. It's a fun and casual round no matter who you are, and while most players will hopefully outgrow this course and turn towards the many better courses in the area, this can be a stepping stone for bigger and better courses, or one you come to just to mess around and have fun.

Here For The Beginner

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 15, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great tee signs on a short course. It's for beginners and not many other people, but I can't complain about 9 concrete tees and 9 solid baskets.

Enjoyable elevation on 1, 2, and 9. Playing with OB rules adds plenty of challenge, including a dangerous skip on 1's green.

Plenty of room to try multiple lines. I'm not saying the level of player this course is geared toward should be trying those lines, I'm just saying they can try them.

Cons:

Short and not much meat. Only two pin placements are over 200'.

You have to know that 4-6 are across the bridge to the left of 3's pin, and there's no signage to indicate that.

When teeing off on on 3 you have a choice: endanger people on the tee pad of 7, or end up in the tennis courts. If the park is busy, there will also be people on the trails bordering basically every hole except 2.

Other Thoughts:

Playing paths OB is a good rule in general since the park is decently busy, and so you don't endanger other park users.

The golf is decent, but this course is far too short for the obstacles to be any type of challenge for a player with more than a year of experience. If you want a warmup before playing Shawnee Mission, this is fine, but nothing special at all.

Lightin' Up Lenexa 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lenexa DGC is a super fast 9 that you can play sith one or two discs. I used my San Marino Roc on a few drives, but you could go putter all the way in a pinch.

The shortest hole is 123' and the longest is 171', so you don't really need a run up at the tee pad on any of the holes. The map shows multiple pin positions, but I didn't notice the unused post sleeves. If they do get moved, it still is not a long layout.

There are concrete tees, and the baskets are all good quality DISCatchers. There is a course map as you enter from the parking lot near the basketball court and the swimming pool. The park does have nice changes in elevation on a few holes. All of the fairways are well manicured grass.

I liked the holes with elevation change. 1, 2, & 3 all have some downhill action. 1 can give you a roll away if you hit the tree or just get unlucky. 2 and 3 have some rough near the basket that can get you in trouble if you lose control. 9 plays uphill toward the pool, and is probably the most difficult hole. There is a big tree halfway to the basket that can take you out.

There is a bridge behind the third basket that you have to cross get to the middle part of the course. 4, 5 and 6 are in a loop there, and you cross back over the bridge to continue on hole 7. Hole 4 does have lanes through the trees that require some control to navigate.

This is an ideal course to take a new player or a young child. It is fun for an experienced player just because it is possible to get a birdie on every hole. I had a putt on all of them but was unable to go 9/9.

Cons:

Super short and easy. You may get stuck waiting for a group on nearby holes that are close together. 7 and 8 are very close to one another. Families with small kids are likely to be out there, and not going at a fast pace.

Hole 8 and 9 had some muddy, squishy grass when I played. There hadn't been much rain prior to that. It is on the hill beneath the pool, maybe that contributed.

Other Thoughts:

Lenexa has a pretty cool park for their community, and the disc golf course is nice. It isn't an epic nine, more of a fun pitch and putt. It is set up well with great equipment, and it has interesting terrain, but it's just too easy to take seriously.

I was six under on my first round (21). Missed birdie putts on the other 3 holes. If I can get my girlfriend into disc golf I'm sure we will come here to learn some of the fundamentals. I wouldn't mind coming back to try for a 9 under, all birdie round. Who knows, maybe I get an ace or two in there as well.

Good for putting practice 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 7, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very short course that can be finished in 30 minutes or less.

The hole lengths make this an ideal course for junior players or beginners. But that doesn't mean it is no good for more experienced players. With the average hole being 145-180 feet, it makes this course ideal for people that want to work on their putting.

Cons:

Hole 7 plays into the fairway for hole 8 which means if you are just behind another group, you have to wait a little longer here so you don't hit someone.

The tee pad for hole 1 is right next to the basketball court and there were some people playing basketball the day I went. They had put all of their stuff on the pad so we had to start just to the right of the tee. Not a major inconvenience but could have been separated from the court a little more.

Other Thoughts:

You could easily do this course over a short lunch break or as a quick workout in the evening.

Bring The Beginners Here. They’ll Love It! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 6, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lenexa Disc Golf Course sits inside a park called Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park. The course starts at the front of the park right by the basketball court. There is a nice sign complete with a course map. You probably won't need the map. The concrete tee pads are small but perfectly functional here. The tee signs are solidly built and give you the information you need. The baskets are Discatchers with a number on each one. You probably don't need this number either. Each hole has both an A and B position. Each hole is a potential Ace waiting to happen.

# 1 is a 138' straight shot.
# 2 is a neat little 123' downhill toss.
# 3 is interesting as you need to throw a hyser around the tennis courts.

Cross the bridge to get to 4-6.

# 4 is 144' to a basket with four trees around it.
# 5 is 138' needing a minimal hyser.
# 6 is a straight 135'. Miss one tree here.

Cross the bridge again.

# 7 is straight and 198'.
# 8 plays either 189' or 207' or 177' and all you need is a simple hyser.
# 9 is either 141' or 219' up a small hill from a tee pad stuck off in the bushes.

Cons:

What's wrong with this course is........nothing! For it's target audience it's about perfect. For those of you who want to compete, throw big air and play big boy courses, then this is not the course for you.

Other Thoughts:

This is just a very comfortable and fun course for the beginner crowd. There aren't many courses around that really cater to the really casual player, the ones who come out with one disc or the family with two kids. I like the fact that it incorporates so many elements of a so called regular course. It has a fun downhill, hyser throws, anhyser throws and nine Ace runs. Come and chase Aces but don't show up and then complain that it's too short and easy. Lenexa Disc Golf Course wasn't designed for you, Dude.

Lenexa Miniature Disc Golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 9, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is an extremely quick course to play if you are in a hurry or if you just want to get a warm-up before heading to another course. It has concrete t-pads but they are not really necessary. If you are desperate to get your first Ace, there is a good chance of it here. It is a great beginner course, so it might be good if you take a friend just getting into the game. It is good to work on your short game and putts. It is rarely crowded

Cons:

It is only 9 holes. There are often walkers and joggers on the course. Hole 8 throws over part of hole 7. It feels like you are playing the equivalent of miniature golf sometimes. Calling the holes par 3's might be a bit of a stretch.

Other Thoughts:

I play this course a fair amount because I can get to it so easily while my kids are busy with gymnastics or dance. I can pretty much play the whole course in about 20 minutes. Even if the holes are short it can be a good ego boost after playing some of the longer courses around town.

in a very nicely maintained park

very good use of available space
park is clean and litter free
parking shouldn't be an issue
easy to find

Cons:

walking trails near almost every hole so be careful with your throws
water leaking from pool area had basket area at #8 fairly muddy
basket placement for hole #3 ( I think ), was near a hillside next to the tennis courts. we had a bit of a wait while people were getting ready to play tennis but it is a multi use park.....

Other Thoughts:

as a beginning player I really liked this course. it was easy to birdie or par each hole, even got close enough to hitting a couple aces that I scared myself. no need for a driver. threw a mid off the tee and then it was putting time. the likelihood of losing a disc was pretty small. some holes are tucked pretty close to one another so some common sense and courtesy goes a long way. Would definitely recommend this course.

One of my favorite courses 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 25, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Concrete pads, nice baskets. Very short and technical. Is fun for all even the most experienced because it is an ace race type of course. You could get away with playing with only one or two discs.

Cons:

Some hole overlap. Baskets don't change location often but seems that anybody could move them they are just bolted in but not locked.

Other Thoughts:

Great course to practice your putt and approach game. Also perfect for introducing players to the game. It is a quick course you can play 9 in 30ish minutes or play it a couple times or more to get in a full 18.

Short & Sweet 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

They did a good job with sch a small area including trees and elevation. Pins are tucked to eliminate the short, wide open look a lot of little parks have. The baskets are nice and the tee pads are adequate for the distances on this course. I really like holes 4 and 8. There are two basket locations for each hole. It is a fun beginner's course.

Cons:

You have to walk back from basket 7 to tee 8 in part of 7 fairway. It's pretty short.

Other Thoughts:

If you add the walking paths/parking lots as OB, it makes things a bit tougher. I played it twice: once with a full bag and once with a mid and putter which is what I should have done the first time. Bigger, younger arms could get by with a putter. My son-in-law was with me and he thought the card game, Ript Revenge, would be a good option for more experienced players on this course.

Excellent course to "cut your teeth" on 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 7, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The grounds were well manicured.
Excellent tee pads that provide for a nice run up.
Good signage.
Good use of the elevation that is present, both uphill and downhill.
There are 2 pin placements per hole and #8 had 3 placements. Disc loss should be nil. This course uses the trees that are present to make some nice lines.
The flow is logical and there are other amenities here like a basketball court, tennis court, aquatic center, etc.
Good beginners course or a place to improve your midrange game.
Rounds will play quickly here.
Many holes will have you running the chains trying for the ACE.
has a nice bridge to get to #4 and #7.

Cons:

The walk between a couple of baskets and a the next tees were a tad too long.
There is a possibility to put a disc in the tennis courts on #3 and in the aquatic center on #9. You would have to shank one pretty good to do so, so please pay attention before you throw.
The walking trails on #5,#8 & #9 come into play so again check before you throw.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is a great beginners course. This would be a good place to introduce the game to a new player and at the same time you could be working on your short game. The holes don't have a whole lot of length so if you are looking for a grip and rip course then you will have to move along. This would be a good place to warm up before you went to Prairie Center or another area course. I feel that they were aiming for the beginning disc golfer and I feel that they hit their target with this course. This is a course that when I first got into the game I would have been super excited to play multiple times because I would be able to reach the holes easily and my scores would've been close to par. With a few more rounds under my belt I still enjoyed my round here and found something to keep me interested.
If you are in the area and have your family with you spend some time here and enjoy some disc golf with them and then enjoy the other amenities that the park has to offer.

A Great Short Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

When it comes to course that the hole average is less than 200 feet, this may be one of the better ones that I have played. The amenities at this course are something you would see at a big 18 hole course; it has a big map at the beginning of the course, substantial concrete tees, and brand new Discatcher baskets.

The course has a fair amount of elevation, and it has a surprising number of obstacles for such a short course. Pretty much every hole is an ace run and shooting four to five under is not out of the question, which is fun in my opinion.

The course is actually used. From my experience, most nine hole courses are used ever, but it was a pleasant surprise to see that this course was used by all ages and all skill levels.

Cons:

There is a little bit of backtracking and confusion with the course. You have to walk over the bridge for holes 4-6 and then back over to get to hole 7. It also could be dangerous since you have to walk in front of hole 3 basket to get to tee 7; just be careful and aware of other disc throwers in the park.

I was not a huge fan of hole 9. For one thing, it is a hard tee to find and it is on a slope that makes it very hard to get to the basket in one shot. There is also mud that seems to be permanently running down that hill that can make you slip if you are not careful.

Other Thoughts:

Maybe it was just the vibe I got from Kansas City disc golf scene, but the atmosphere at this course was great. It is a very easy course, but has some challenge that would make a perfect -9 round very hard. This would be a great place to introduce new players, and a great place to play a few quick rounds.

Accomplishes its Purposes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great course to take beginners, your kids, or your lady friends. They will enjoy the shortness of the course, while still being impressed with how fun playing disc golf is.

For those of us with a little bit of experience, this is a great course to work on your up-shot game. I wouldn't call this a mid-range game course, with the exception of 2 holes. This is a great place to bring your up-shot putter and try to park each hole.

Very scenic park with rolling hills and trees. This is a type of park I would want my kids to grow up by.

Just a fun course to play, even with 5 years of experience.

Cons:

If you are looking for a place to throw shots over 200 feet, this isn't for you. You need to know what you are getting into.

There are several times where you must throw over a walking path, so make sure to look for walkers before you throw.

Navigation is okay, but you need to know that you must cross over the bridge to get from hole 3 to hole 4 and from hole 6 to hole 7. When going from 8 to 9, you must walk up the hill and turn left.

Hole 9 is on the slope where a ton of pool water runs off, so the slope is constantly soaked and kind of smells.

Other Thoughts:

I go out of my way to play this course in order to work on up-shots. Its also fun to play and try to shoot a -9 or get an ace.

If you know what you are getting into, you'll have a great time at this course.

Perfect Short Game Work 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It is one of the best courses to work on those difficult mid-range shots- 150 ft to about 200 ft where you must put yourself close on a full length course.

It is beautiful, and it is very easy to navigate and play quickly. It has some fairly challenging up-shots (off the tee box). But for what it is, it is outstanding and very very clean.

Cons:

By no means is this a full length course. It is not an extremely difficult course. It is not a tournament course.

Because it is such a small course, there are a few places where you could find yourself in a positions where a little bit too much power on a drive (even with a putter) could cause a "four"-call if you are surrounded by groups.

Other Thoughts:

If you have 30 minutes, it's all you need to get 9 holes in. Overall, it is just a great course to work on your short-game.

For what it is, it is perfect to help improving aspects of your game. I love this little guy.

Decent Beginner/Junior Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 8, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Navigation on the holes is very easy, every basket can be seen from the tee. 10/10

Navigation between holes is also easy. Between 3 and 4 and between 8 and 9 are the only kind of tricky spots but there is a map at the start. 9/10

This course does a great job of using the obstacles that are available on the land, especially considering how small of an area it is. 9/10 use of obstacles

Baskets are nice new DISCatchers, tee pads are short, but this isn't a big deal due to the length of the holes. 8/10

Course is very well mowed and is in great shape for a new course. Tee signs are recently improved. Still a little rough around the edges with lots of poison ivy that is very in play. 8/10 on maintenance.

Lots of shade, a bench present, and a water fountain near the start. However, lots of poison ivy and thick woods knocks comfort down to a 6/10

Only a few holes require a decision on what shot path to throw (4, 5, and 9), but the length introduces risk reward (go for the ace or play it safe for an easy 2?) Decisionmaking required: 6/10

Cons:

Not only is this course EXTREMELY short, but there is not much variety from hole to hole, even with the alternate tee positions. 7 and 8 are a little longer than the rest but overall variety of distances is 2/10.

Holes 2 and 3 are downhill, 9 is a little uphill, but the rest are almost completely flat. They didn't have a ton to work with but I felt like they could have done more than they did. 3/10

Definitely a beginner only course unless you're just looking for some upshot practice. 3/10 on challenging all levels

Despite how open the course appears, discs are pretty hard to find. Going a little long on a few holes (5, 6, 8) can put you in some thick woods woods and the brush on 2, 7, and 8 can be brutal. 4/10

There are 2 possible positions on each hole, which is nice, but in most cases the alternates don't really change the holes much except for 30ft of distance. 4/10

Variety in openness is okay. 6 of the 9 holes don't really have any trees in the way until you get within 30ft of the basket. (4, 6, and 9 are exceptions) 4/10

There's an okay amount of variety on the shot paths on this course. 3 (and 1 and 8 when long) forces a hyzer, 9 forces an anhyzer, and 4 encourages one or the other, but on the other five holes straight and simple works perfectly. 5/10

Other Thoughts:

I initially had this course at a 2.22 on my spreadsheet (go to my profile if you're curious) which was rounded down to a 2. Improvements to tee signs, a couple of signs to help with navigation, reduction of poison ivy (although more could still be done here) has moved this course up to a solid 2.51.

1/10 difficulty, One of the easiest courses I've ever played. Good for introducing new players to the game or for intermediate players to practice, but if you're advanced you probably won't get much out of the experience here.

As a tennis player, discs repeatedly hitting the fence right next to me or possibly flying onto the court on hole 3 would get really annoying.

This park seemed to have a lot of land that would have been great for disc golf from what I saw, it's a shame that more of this land is not allotted for it.

Lots of ace runs and birdie chances. Great course for beginners and kids. Great use of such a small area. Lots of shots to use. Uphill, downhill, flat.the way they use the tennis courts and natural landscape to add difficulty to the course is genius.

Cons:

It is short and unless you are bringing your kids to play, it probably will not get used as much as it should. My biggest problem was hole nine. I loved the layout, however I left my first shot left and under the tree on the hill to the pool. The ground there is soaked and very slick. After my shot from the tree I ended up on my backside covered in mud. So lesson learned, don't go left, if you do be careful!!

Other Thoughts:

Two discs are all you need. So it is a great course if you want to work on approach shots and putting. My wife and 12 year old daughter love it. They do not have great distance to their throws so this course allowed them par opportunities with every hole.

Pros:

Here's my review for each basket:

#1 - Short hyzer or anhyzer near the tree places you well in putting range.

#2 - Nice downhill shot. The two trees in front of tee force your angle.

#3 - Probably my favorite tee. I like the concrete steps leading you up the hill to the tee.

#4 - A short walk across the bridge from the #3 basket takes you to a short technical shot through some tall thin trees. Choose your line and land in the open field for a good birdie chance.

#5 - A tall tree blocks the basket, but easy to hit if you angle your shot just right. I bounced off the top of basket on first attempt.

#6 - Just about a repeat of #4, just heading back towards bridge across creek which takes you to...

#7 - This is a scenic shot. The hill from #2, an open fairway, trees and the creek to your left with a small slope guarding the #8 tee to the left as well. Woods behind basket can fool you into not wanting to drive too hard towards basket.

#8 - Repeat of #7, just to the left of same fairway.

#9 - Walk up the steep pathway from #8 basket and take a short walk to the left when you reach the top. Tee is inside the wooded clearing, throwing out of the woods towards the Aquatic Center and #1 tee. Basket is the most scenic with stone barrier, evergreens and mulch. Aim for the closest tree on the hill to the basket and putt for birdie!

Cons:

Short, short, and again... Short. Yet, with the land available, it works great. I'd recommend this easily to beginners. Whereas the park may get crowded at times, this seems to be a minor inconvenience than annoyance. Most people I ran into were curious as to what I was doing and were intrigued by the game.
I offered one jogger a chance to throw, which was amusing in and of itself.

My only dislike, was the erosion and mud near #3. I hope the Park can find a way to divert the run off better. Either that, or create a water hazard!

Other Thoughts:

The course just opened this month, I believe. The City of Lenexa advertises it as the 'course is geared towards families and youth and provides a short course not found in the metro area.'

Well, there are many short 9-hole courses in the Kansas City metro area. In Lenexa? No. However, since Shawnee Mission Park is right down the road (I always thought the park existed in Lenexa), I guess this is Lenexa's only short course.

Anyways, the course plays through a light to moderately wooded area to the east of the Aquatic Center. Each hole layout is under 200ft for the most part. I remember #8 being the only one over 200 in one of the alternative pin locations.

I played this course early in morning, as Parks & Rec were finishing mowing the area. The course was kept quite clean. Several people were walking the trail that cuts through portions of the course, but they were polite and observant enough not to interfere with play. I also saw some footprints in the mud near the steps to the #3 tee. I am hoping that was an indicator that the course is being used and others are finding out about it.

Last, for it being what it is, a short family friendly course, the City of Lenexa did a fine job with creating an used area into something worth introducing people to the sport of disc golf. I'm happy to see the effort and the course is scenic enough to attract newer players. I, for one, hope to see new players out there... And a few experienced ones as well!
