Pros:

Zimmerman City Park is a beginner/rec level friendly course in a nice little park. Only a half hour or so north of Minneapolis. The course plays around a couple sports fields but generally is pretty much disc golf exclusive. Course is free to play and permanent.

The baskets are Innova Discatchers that are in good shape and catch nicely. One basket per hole, and by the looks of it, one pin position per hole.

The pads are concrete. They're definitely on the shorter and narrower side but are plenty adequate for a shorter course like this one. All were pretty level and had good grip. Nothing special but much better than natural pads. One tee pad per hole.

The flow of the course is very intuitive. You'll be able to see the next tee from every hole, with the exception of the transition from hole 5 to 6. But there is a next tee arrow guiding you for this transition.

The course is moderately wooded to lightly wooded. Starts out lightly wooded before getting more technical around hole 7. Then hole 18 is mostly open again. The first 6 holes start out kind of bland, but it really takes off after that. Fun short but technical goodness.

There are tee signs for every hole (except hole 12 I believe it was). These are basic, basic signs. They're about the size of a smartphone and contain the hole #, par and distance. But than nothing I guess.

Cons:

The course isn't laid out in the safest manner. The first 5 holes are pretty packed together and even a slightly errant shot could, or most likely will, end up in a different fairway.

The course seems like it gets pretty busy. It was pretty packed on a chilly late April afternoon. You can also tell by the very well worn paths between holes. Not a con per se, just worth mentioning since you may want to avoid this one during peak hours for both safety and pace of play.

As I mentioned in the pros, the tee pads are pretty short and narrow. If you have a James Conradesque run up these will not be your favorites. And the tee signs leave a lot to be desired.

There's a little bit of a walk back to your vehicle after finishing your round. Nothing drastic, but just be sure to bring what you need for the full 18 holes. You won't be swinging back near your car at any point.

As a few other reviewers have said, it can be a bit confusing to tell which pad or basket you're heading for in a couple spots. I personally didn't have any issues but I can understand this being a problem for some. The map on Udisc seemed pretty accurate anyway.

Other Thoughts:

This is a really fun little course. I had a really good time playing this one. Is it a destination course? Absolutely not, but is absolutely worth a visit if nearby. There are just SOOO many courses around the twin cities. And so many good ones. I'd skip some of the closer 9's and play this one over those every time.

But if you want to play the best courses in the cities, this one just doesn't quite fit the bill. But you can absolutely do worse than this one. Solid 3 for me, good course. I'll play this again if I'm nearby.

Good beginner/intermediate course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Nice concrete teepads, a little narrow if you're going for an odd angled shot, but they are flat, and angled properly for each hole.
-Well maintained, grass was well mowed, all signs present, no damage on baskets
-lots of parking space
-A variety of holes.(although mostly short) holes 1-5 are mostly open, with a few trees, and the majority of the holes after that are technical.
-The rough isn't super rough, it'd have to be a really hard left shank to lose a disc on any hole, and I think it'd only be possible on 3 or 4 holes

Cons:

-All the holes are pretty short with only 2 over 300'
-The park was very busy when I was there, There were joggers and walkers around and throughout the course, as well as some families picnicking close to the basket on hole 12 and 18
-The course doesn't flow well, and doesn't have an overall map (that I could find) from hole 5 to 6 you have to cross a large field, and there is only one sign, that is out of sight from the basket at 5 to guide you. There are a number of holes where you have to check multiple tee signs to see which tee is the correct one for the next hole. Walking from 18 to 1 is rather long.

Other Thoughts:

-This course is mostly technical shots, but aren't difficult shots, unless solely going for aces, an advanced player would get bored here quickly.
-This Isn't all par threes as shown on the site. I didn't realize the site was incorrect until after I completed the course, and I didn't record the pars, but there are a few 4s, and I think one or two 5s. (I think these pars are too generous and they should all be 3s)
-Overall this was a fun course to play, and I would play it again If I was within 30ish miles, but wouldn't travel much more than that for it.

Nice Fun Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Pretty safe and you're not going to lose a disc
-Concrete pads
-Pretty fun variety of woods to open fields

Cons:

-The pads were a bit short.
-Not very easy to follow
-Couple spots you don't know which basket you're shooting at.

Other Thoughts:

This was a fun course and nice place to play after all the longer holes I had been playing. It was a nice change to have some shots that were "makeable" for me.

Good for all skill levels and a pretty nice walk around baseball / softball fields and woods vs open.

Short course but fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fun layout, great for all skill levels, lots of Ace runs. Condition was good.

Cons:

Teeboxes were short and baseball diamond dirt. Little tough to find a couple holes without a map. Long walk from #18 to #1.

Other Thoughts:

I really had fun at this course and will go back. The layout was really well designed overall. If it had concrete pads I'd rate it 4 or higher.

Not too shabby 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Lots of trees for practice in wooded areas.
-Some wide open holes at the beginning to get warmed up
-Some nice shorts holes for a run at some aces(That always makes things exciting)
-Not many other 18 hole courses around so it is good to have one in the area

Cons:

-Pretty heavy traffic with kids and adults around the baseball and football fields
-The tee boxes are very frequently located near the previous hole's pin, so you need to be careful not to overdrive into the group in front of you
-lots of tree stumps and sticks that I tripped over in the woods(mostly my fault)
-Tee boxes are terrible. Just spend the extra money to put in cement tees. Please.

Other Thoughts:

You have to keep in mind that this course is brand new. It will get much better in a couple years once the city gets a chance to develop it some more.

That being said, this is still a solid course. I find it to be most fun if you are just hanging around with some buddies and want to go play a relaxed round. However, the course is still good in more serious circumstances as well.

I would have honestly rated this a whole point higher if the tee boxes weren't so awful. I'm not a fan of the baseball field dirt.

All in all, not bad for a brand new course, nice to have one up in the area there to help grow the sport, especially a course like this which seems to be tailored to beginners.

Quick, easy 18 hole course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Free to play 18 hole course
- Decent mix of open/wooded holes
- Very low traffic
- New course, so still being worked on

Cons:

- Not a single long hole, longest is probably not much over 300ft
- Hardly any elevation changes, only on a couple of holes
- No signage/direction
- Not very close to other good courses (maybe Becker)

Other Thoughts:

I was excited when I heard there would be a new 18 hole course in Zimmerman, because I live in Elk River and every 18 hole course is at least 20 minutes away.

This course is very easy, very basic, and can be played very quickly. With a fast group, or by yourself, you can easily complete this course in less than an hour.

The first four holes lack any real variety, but after that things start to get slightly more interesting. You end up going into the woods for about 75% of the course, but each hole is a short shot with a few trees to avoid.

If you are a beginner, or want to introduce some people to disc golf, this would be a great course to play. However, if you want something a little more challenging, you may as well head to Becker or more towards the cities.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This coarse has a nice mix of everything except water. You start off with a nice straight shot on #1, then a couple shorter holes with trees that get in the way every time!

Cons:

The coarse goes around a couple of baseball fields, so if there is a tournament going on, they tend to park on the tee box hole #1, then they tend to walk in front of you when you are throwing!!

This is a new coarse so the tee boxes are just baseball diamond dirt and they are not level and they are very loose. So when you go to throw, expect to slip a few times. I tend to tee off next to the box.

Other Thoughts:

Give this coarse a year or two for the city to invest in it, and this will be a great coarse.

Birdie City 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 18, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This was a fun throw! The first time it felt like a 2.5 but as I kept throwing it I enjoyed it more and more. There is a port-o-potty available at first tee pad. #4 is just a tear drop putter throw over a very small valley with trees and brush behind. Sometimes these shots are nice to change it up! I like throwing in wooded areas and holes #8-#17 were exactly that. This course offers plenty of ace looks with unlimited potential for birdies, but enough trees to get rattled with a bogey here and there as well. The wooded holes are not too technical, so I would still recommend this course for beginners. Moderate to low elevation changes. If you want to air out a big drive #18 gives you an opportunity to do so. I think it would be hard to lose a disc at this course. Overall there is a decent balance of throwing up/down left and right shots. The baskets are in great shape and free to play is always nice.

Cons:

The course is located near some ball parks and I wouldn't be surprised if they just used extra sand from the infields for tee boxes. I actually fell on Hole #3 on my drive. There are no yardage/or next tee signs yet. I had to look around a bit to find the next pad. I threw at the wrong basket twice my first round but once you've thrown the course this is not an issue. Holes #1-#6 are pretty wide open and basic. The layout could use a little work. I walked like 600 ft from hole #5 to #6. There was a nice tunnel path I walked threw that would have been a great hole to bridge that gap. The hole #18 basket is a little farther away from the parking lot and 1st tee than than you would like. No water if you're into different hazards. Overall not overly dynamic.

Other Thoughts:

I think this course has something for everyone. I probably would have given it a 2.75 if that was an option but I went 3 because I really enjoyed throwing it. I can't wait to watch this course develope. There is a lot of room for improvements. Zimmerman could be something special someday! If you are in the area this is worth a throw. I'll be a regular out there beacuse I live pretty close.

Great potential course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 29, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

- A free 18 hole course
- New course, little foot traffic so far!
- Ace runs, ace runs and more ace runs!
- Open holes with some wooded holes, but wooded holes have plenty of lanes to get your disc there.
- All par 3's make it a fun smaller course but a great course for your putter and mid range work!
- Wooded areas aren't over populated with poison ivy or bugs, I played today it was 20 MPH winds so the wind played a factor in no bugs I am sure it can be bad just like any other course.
- Great new baskets, Discatchers.

Cons:

- Teepads are crap, just diamond dust.
- No signage had to look around for the teepads.
- Greens aren't very clean in woods, would be nice to have them cleaned up and lose the weeds that are growing all around.
- Lot's of bigger branches down, I am assuming from cutting lanes out for the holes.
- Some longer walks to the next holes, do to the fact the course is built around a bigger park.

Other Thoughts:

I fell in love with this course instantly, I am not sure why it's nothing amazing, but it has great potential needs some work but other than that this course is great! I recommend it to anyone in the surrounding area, or if your trying to complete the map of Minnesota! If you go there I would make sure you have map from the links/files tab on the course page to have has a reference. I caught myself looking at it a few times to find the next teepads since they aren't marked at all.

Friendly Round 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

- 18 holes
- Mix of open and wooded holes
- Elevation Shots
- Course doesn't seem to interfere with other park attractions
- Ace Runs!
- Work the Mids/Fairways
- Great Beginner/Intermediate Course
- Wooded holes are not disc eaters
- DisCatcher Pro 28s very visible

Cons:

- No tee signs / Map (Yet?)
- Tee Pads uneven
- Single Tee Option (Red)
- Few long walks (Limited by shape/space)
- Favors RHBH
- Although holes look unique, many distances and fairway angles are really similar
- Some putting greens not really brushed (I like trees and branches around the basket, but not weeds, grass and brush 5 feet off the pin)

Other Thoughts:

Always exciting to see an 18 hole course.

There is only a Red tee box option, so this course was designed for the Beginner/Intermediate Player. That said, this course accomplishes it's mission.

Opening holes are wide open, great warm up on the initial holes. Ace opportunities across the board throughout the course.

There's a walk from 5 to 6, and back to parking lot from 18 due to space and design limitations. There's a path coming off hole 5 and traffic will wear in a trail. Some directional signs on many holes would be a big help for first time players.

Holes 8-11, 14-16 are "wooded" holes, and was happy to see the area has been cleared/brushed pretty well. Hole 5 is the first "wooded" hole, with very thick woods to the left, and if the woods are brushed out it would be much less aggravating for those (other people) going in there. All other holes are open underneath and with traffic and maintenance, you should not be afraid to lose discs on the "wooded" holes.

There are no Tee Signs/Course Map, which for me is a big strike. This is a new course at the time of this review, so I will be happy to edit the review and possibly the rating depending on further improvements. Having designed and built courses, this review is trying to take into account for this course maturing and cleaning up over time.

Tee Boxes are baseball infield dirt, which compacts well, but also ruts out and gets uneven. They were already uneven when I played - these will need to be maintained/scraped/leveled and then they may be OK. (If you decide to put in "white" tees, let me know! This could attract more intermediate/advanced players and I've already seen some good potential lines)

There are a lot of straight, and slight right to left holes, with just a couple slight left to right. This favors the RHBH player. Found myself reaching for the Buzzz a lot, however this is a Red course.

There are a few holes that demand a shot shape to be executed, I think with varying success. Hole 11, 14, 15 very memorable and do well at this. Hole 16 in particular, doesn't know yet what it wants to be when it grows up. Given no real lanes, it's a luck shot.

Hole 18 finally you can pull out the big driver and let it rip, and it's a fun one. Two wide lanes with a row of large trees down the middle. 400'+ leaving an approach shot of some sort for most players, where as most other holes are just driving to the basket.

Overall, it is a Red level course and does well for that level. I found myself wanting to see a different line (hard curve right or left maybe) and wanting to throw a few driver holes. Good course to work the Mids and Fairway drivers. I will be coming back because there are lines I want to hit, and aces I want to hit!

Pros:

Fun midrange or putter course if you enjoy driving putters. Very righty friendly or good for leftys who like forehands or annys. Most holes in the 200-300 ft range.

Cons:

Course has dirt pads as of now, it's brand new and a bit rough in some patches. Starts on the south end of the park, ends in the middle a ways away from the start.

Other Thoughts:

It was not too tough to navigate once we started. I enjoy woods golf so this is a fun one, we played 2 rounds in a hour and a half.
