well-designed BOLF conversion

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 14, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

-excellent land with great features for disc golf: rolling hills, elevation, creek, pond
-design makes great use of the features and maximizes the relatively limited trees
-good discatchers, great signs, concrete tees, 2 practice baskets
-a handful of mandos that are... not offensive
-two pin positions per hole, with significant differences
-big variety of distances, from 200' ace runs to three par 4s each over 700' (long pins)
-great maintenance

Cons:

-very little shade on this course, be prepared
-signs don't show current pin position, a little troublesome on the longer holes
-military base = limited access
-intense wind
-the trees are used well but there are no true wooded holes; hole 5 comes close

Other Thoughts:

Wind Creek is an excellent course and I usually don't enjoy disc golf on a golf course. The golf course is closed so you're not sharing the space; that's a huge plus compared to many courses on a golf course. The AFB is limited access so you need to plan ahead to be able to play (or get really lucky at the gate like i did) but for that cost you get immaculate maintenance. The equipment is great and in good condition and the pins were in a mix of short and long positions the day that I played.

The land is full of subtly rolling hills with more significant elevation in a handful of places. The first four holes play open but with a dense grove of trees lining the creek off to the right. Hole 5 then throws though a tight window and over that creek to a hillside basket off to the right; a fun RHFH ace run. The following hole is a complementary RHBH ace run with a tree line on the left, throwing slightly uphill to a basket just in front of a fallen tree (short position).

The rest of the course moves away from the tree line and features scattered, mature trees throughout the fairways. Several holes (8, 10, 13, 14) cross the creek (same creek, no trees) and have an elevation element to them since the land on both sides slopes downward toward the creek. I particularly enjoyed the short basket on hole 8, with the creek on the right side and the bridge across just behind the pin. It's a simple downhill hyzer but requires accurate distance control in the wind. In fact, that's a good description for most of the course: accurate distance control in the wind. The trees might not force lines but they can ruin your hole if you land right behind one when you still have 300+ to the basket.

There are a handful of mandos that are exclusively about making the hole harder. I'm typically not a fan but they're not too gimmicky. At least half the holes have a pedestrian path in play, most of them playing across it. There doesn't seem to be too much traffic there but it's a factor. After hole 16 where you throw across a pond, the last two holes are just long, grip and rip holes to get you back to the starting area. It sounds like I'm complaining a lot but I found most of the course to be a lot of fun.

This course should appeal to a lot of players. Big arms will love the long drive opportunities, shorter arms still have birdie chances and can save par with smart play on the longer holes. If you require a wooded course then this isn't it but if that's the case, then just don't come to Wichita Falls. I think the rating is closer to 3.75 but I'm giving it the bump for design, seclusion (the riff-raff isn't getting on base), and a distinct character from the rest of the WF course lineup. The new Lake Wichita Park design wishes it was this course but Wind Creek does it way better. This course and the private course, River's Edge, are the must plays in Wichita Falls.

Wind Creek 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 16, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Extremely well-maintained
Concrete tee-pads
Excellent signage-show distance for both placements and a map
Plenty of chances to air out big distance shots
Makes use of the available elevation, more than any other course in the Wichita Falls area
Dual practice baskets at the front of the course
Mandos force players to use more than just big hyzers

Cons:

Not a lot of trees-can't be helped but I still like courses that are a little more wooded
As a wide open course, it can be brutal in the summer when it gets pretty hot
Bugs can be bad, especially after a recent rain
Usually not a problem but pedestrians can come into play, as the course has a running path going through it.

Other Thoughts:

This is the longest course in the Wichita Falls area, and easily the best maintained. The course plays through what used to be the Sheppard AFB golf course and was converted to a disc golf course some years back. One tee per hole, with two pin placements, this course make use of quite a few mandos and presents an opportunity for big arm players to air it out.

Hole 1 starts out with a driver over a small mound and force the player to work around a large disc-eating tree in the middle of the hole.

Hole 2 is a mando to the left side of the tree directly in front of the tee, forces a forehand or turnover for righties.

Hole 3 is a big hyzer shot towards a basket near a large tree at the end of the fairway. Be careful not to run long there is an OB creek and some pretty nasty rough behind the basket location

Hole 4 is short clown's mouth style hole with a tight fairway with OB left and thick rough right

Hole 5 is a short tunnel with an extremely tight double mando through the woods on either side of the creek. The hole is less than 200 feet but one bad kick can make this hole painful.

Hole 6 is an uphill hyzer for righties, the left side of the hole is blocked by a wall of trees

Hole 7 is one of the three par 4s on the course, starting uphill for the hole, it is either a 700+ fairly straight shot or a 500+ foot shot down into a cluster of trees.

Hole 8 is either a relatively short shot over the creek and downhill or a longer straight drive to a basket over the creek and behind a tree, depending on placement.

Hole 9 is plays into a small cluster of trees, fairly routine shot.

Hole 10 throws back over the creek and over the sidewalk on the other side to a basket in the a clump of mesquite trees

Hole 11 plays uphill along the sidewalk with a tree forcing a shot out to the left, and everything left of the path OB

Hole 12 plays with a mando forcing you left of the tree with OB farther left...be wary of the sand trap in front of the basket.

Hole 13 shoots back over the creek with another mando forcing you to stay left.

Hole 14 crosses back over the creek again and is laid out for a rightie flick or turnover, plays slightly downhill.

Hole 15 plays downhill, with a lot of OB and a drop zone if you get into trouble.

Hole 16 throws across a small pond, fairly routine shot, be wary of people fishing in the pond.

Hole 17 is the second of the par 4s on the course, and starts out by requiring the player to hit a gap between some trees. The hole plays uphill and has some sand traps to add OB to the hole.

Hole 18 is a long par 4 which bends gently to the left. There is a scattering of trees through the hole, which does add some thought into the tee shot.

Overall, this is a really, fun well-maintained course. It is on a military installation, which can make it challenging to get to if you lack and ID but is well worth playing.

Wind Creek 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 24, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Well maintained. Great tee pads. Brand new baskets. Some elevation. Two pin placements for every hole. Course has great drainage due to being built on an old golf course. Excellent informative tee signs at every tee box. Challenging course.

Cons:

Very windy most of the time hence the name. Can be difficult to get a pass to get on the air force base (plan ahead). Mosquitos can be very thick so bring bug spray.

Other Thoughts:

Best course the the area. The only A tier course within 100 miles.

Great course for a military base! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Large, informative tee signs
-Easy to navigate
-Great mix of holes...3 short, 3 bomber, 12 right in the middle
-Friendly/Helpful locals
-Sensible mandos/ob that add to the course

Cons:

-Little to no shade
-No garbage cans/restrooms
-Trainee airmen running about acting foolish
-Restricted access for civilians

Other Thoughts:

I'm here for some military training, and the course is two blocks from my hotel on base. I was psyched to find a course so close, but expected it to be garbage as most on-base courses tend to be. I was pleasantly surprised! Outdoor Rec obviously puts a lot of time and effort into this course, and it is a real asset for Sheppard Air Force Base.

Long and open 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very good tee signs
Very good large tee pads
2 pin placements on every hole
for Wichita Falls, this course has some slight elevation
except for a few spots, course has good flow

Cons:

There are not a lot of trees so the holes are rather long, several 2 shot holes.
Not a big fan of the OB's or Mando's, but it does add some challenge to the holes

Other Thoughts:

No problem getting in, I just went to the visitors center, gave them my ID, had to type in my SS# into the key pad and 5 min later, had a pass with my picture on it to play the course.

Course is played on an old Ball Golf course. It makes good use of the hills from the old tee's and greens. The few holes with Mando's were to force turnover shots and one clown mouth hole #5 to keep you from throwing over the tree's.

Several of the holes make sidewalk and across ob, or in one hole, you have to clear the sidewalk to be considered inbound.

I was pretty lucky today, no wind. But if there is any wind, you are going to know it out here. The course lives up to it's name.

Windcreek 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 2, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great grippy tee pads.
New Discatcher baskets
Always freshly cut grass and when I did land a drive in the creek, it took ten minutes to find a stick of any kind to retrieve my Disc with. Another golfer stuck one in the tree, same deal no rocks were to be found!
Best course in Wichita Falls, TX!
Free!

Cons:

Have to stop at the main gate and apply for a pass but you can get a 6 month pass when you do.

Other Thoughts:

Solid course, especially for the area.
Be aware you are entering a military base with a gaurd gate. Do not smell like a skunk or be drinking alcohol when you pull in.

My thoughts after playing 5 times 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 6, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-VERY nice tee pads, baskets, grass, and signs at each hole.

-Only WF area course that has practice putting baskets at start.

-Each hole has 2 places for each basket so its like 2 courses in one.

-Nice use of the slight to moderate elevation change.

-Reasonable Pars (shorter holes are Par 3's, and there are no Par 5's)

-Small creek running through the course isn't really big enough to lose discs in.

Cons:

-As it's name suggests, this course can be very windy and often is in this area. (I would suggest playing Lake Wichita DGC if it's more than a bit windy)

-OB's and Mandatory's are a bit ridiculous to play during non tournament rounds in my opinion. (OB's include pavement which often runs right through the most common throwing paths which can lead to taking a unfortunate stroke if you're playing OB's. Also some holes have Mando's which are hard, if not impossible to play well when coupled with the wind, even for people who can throw BH and FH)

Other Thoughts:

I'm really excited to play this course more now that I have my permanent pass.
