Pros:

Very nice and long tee pads, great brand new innova baskets. Great mix of hole distances and shots. Has around 5 par 4s depending on location. Nice new tee signs. With good forehand and backhand lines. Some real fun, and good holes including hole 12s signature tunnel hole. Good course kiosk map right next to hole 1s tee pad with poison oak signs throughout course. This course is good for all skill levels but might be little long for new players. Navigation is fairly simple and little signs point you throughout most the course

Cons:

Not much elevation change throughout the course. Hole 5s tee sign didn't match where the pin was located.

Other Thoughts:

This course is really really good probably the best in the salem area and more so around a 4.25 rating

Quick 2016 update 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Couple plus-side updates to the already great reviews, just for the sake of affirming:

The tee signage is improved. The holes are all marked with staked laminate signs that show the par, distance, and line for each shot.

Small signs point the way to next holes along the way.

It's quite navigable at this point, and mostly manicured quite nicely. And it's pretty awesome out there as a DGC and just in general, as rural Marion County goes.

Cons:

Far as I'm concerned, the only thing missing from Wheatland is elevation. But even without, the holes are varied, challenging, and fun.
I did just lose a disc to the brambles tho. Swallowed whole. Gone.

Newest Salem Area Course Is Lengthy! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wheatland Disc Golf Course in Williamette Mission State Park located in Gervais, OR is located just a few minutes off I-5. There is a $5 daily users fee to enter the park. There's plenty of parking and a kiosk at the beginning. The kiosk had a small course map and a sign saying "Take one" but there were none available. The course is pretty easy to navigate with many little next tee signs everywhere. There are a few little laminated tee signs still standing although most have been destroyed. The tee pads are nice large concrete ones though some reviewers seemed concerned that they are a few inches above the ground level. I found them spacious enough to not present a problem. The baskets are the dark blue Bentley models. Other reviewers have complained about them. Personally, I think they're handsome but I did notice some rusting chains already.

I was impressed with the variety of holes both in length and open versus technical throws. There are holes with blind baskets, sharp doglegs, ACE runs, long open holes, holes forcing you to make decisions as to which route to take. A nice variety in all.

I had a couple of favorite holes. # 12 is a 200' throw under a natural canopy of trees of some type. You need to keep you tee off straight as well as low to birdie (or ACE?) this hole.

And then # 15 was interesting. The basket is probably 550-600' out around the fairway. But looming right in the middle of the fairway are two very large trees. I'd love to watch how better players attack this hole. They probably have enough arm to just hyzer around the big trees. Not me! Then the basket is tucked in between two fairly large clumps of bushes.

The course then ends back at the kiosk area starting with two longer holes including # 18's challenging run through the orchard rows.

Cons:

Tee signs will be a nice addition.
Course is flat.
There are places when other park users will and do come into play. Just be courteous and be aware of your surroundings and you shouldn't encounter any problems.
Poison oak. I guess. I'm from Washington state. I don't think we have any up there and I didn't see any here.

Other Thoughts:

Just another excellent choice for Oregon disc golfers. As if you didn't already have 4 star plus courses to choose from. I'm forever singing the praises of Oregon's ever-growing stable of great courses to golfers around the country. I think this course will compare nicely to Adair when tee signs are installed and the course is a little broke in. Pretty nice company, I'd say!

Nice New Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 12, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Variety - tight wooded to wide open holes, good use of the space given
-Giant tee pads
-Trash Cans every few holes
- Few throwing conflicts with civilians for such a large course
-Long course, which is great for what the Salem area was lacking

Cons:

-Poison Oak. God bless the crews who carved out these wooded holes, but the poison oak is everywhere none the less. It will diminish with use, but watch out if you're allergic.
-Baskets are short. My guess is by about 6 inches, which makes them weird to putt on.
-I don't know if some morons took them out, but there is no signage on many tees. In fact, there's no info about the disc golf course at all when you get to the park itself. There is a big new kiosk by the first tee pad, but there is no info on it.
-The tee pads are huge, but if you get close to an edge, you will fall off.
-This is being picky, but the course is pretty much flat

Other Thoughts:

Wheatland is the largest course in the Salem area (by a lot). The variety in vegetation, both thick and dense, from rows of Filbert trees, to dense blackberry thickets, to open fields with the occasional giant tree, make the course. Whoever designed the course did an excellent job with both land use and ordering the of the holes. My wife, who is only an occasional player, told me it was her favorite course. It was pretty, with almost every whole opening a new challenge. I will play many times.

Varied, and fair 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 10, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- The holes are different. It uses the trees well. It's partially on old walnut and filbert orchards, but it also weaves into some taller trees and some open areas.
- The teepads are big! I would ignore the fault lines. I'd rather people just be safe when they throw, so start at the back and use the space you need.
- There are holes that cater both to accurate players, and to long throwers.
- 18 ends right where 1 begins. Doesn't seem like a huge deal, but it's definitely a plus.
- Plenty of parking!

Cons:

- POISON. OAK. Oh my, the poison oak. On the walkout between 10 and 11, there is a little tunnel through the brush, and there is a BIG, FAT poison oak branch just chillin'. And it's all over the place. Yikes.
- The baskets. They're not good. Every time you play, you have to push the S-links back because they get stuck, and the chains are rusty. A huge bummer, because they're pretty new, and they're not going to get replaced.
- Not a con so much as the reality of a new course: still a good amount of brush shapes the fairways of the tight holes, but it's much better than it used to be, and honestly, it plays pretty fair now.
- Running water would be nice. I see faucets from when it used to be a campground, but I think they're shut off.

Other Thoughts:

*I play around 980-rated, so keep that in mind when you take this advice! Won't be good for 880-rated or 1020-rated folks*

1 - A long RHBH anhyzer shot, fairly open. If you don't turn your RHBH, it'll probably fade into the brush.
2 - A short hole appropriate for driving a putter.
3 - Short, but with a very tight RHFH (Right hand, forehand) shot that probably won't park you unless you hit the line just right.
4 - I recommend pumping a RHBH (Right hand, backhand) high and a little right and letting it fade left to the basket. If you have 450+ distance, you should be able to birdie this fairly often.
5 - There's a very tight, high RHBH line you can use to get it pretty close, but it's pretty hard to park. Right now, there's a perfect high line you have to hit. As the years go on, it will get easier.
6 - Short, dead straight ace run.
7 - Split route that is basically a layup tee shot to frame your second shot. I recommend RHBH off the tee, then pump a high RHFH and hope it crashes to the basket on the right.
8 - There are two RHFH routes. You can choose to take the low, smaller route, or go wide left where it's open, but requires more power. Either are birdie-able.
9 - Throw it as hard as you can, slide in a nice upshot, hope for no wind, and take your birdie three.
10 - Throw a Gator/Firebird RHBH around the large bushes/trees. You can't see the basket, but you'll park it.
11 - A pretty well-distanced RHFH into an opening in the orchard, or a loooong turnover. I recommend the RHFH.
12 - As the other reviewer said, SIGNATURE HOLE. Period. A beautiful tunnel shot. If you have a stable Leopard and you trust your aim, you should nail it.
13 - It's open... until it's not! Throw something straight and long, and hope to make it between the trees. Even if you don't, the bailout shots are usually pretty merciful.
14 - The same shot, but half the distance. Throw your putter. Even bad shots will be pretty close, and the basket is elevated in a stump!
15 - Looks harder from the tee than it is. Pump a long RHBH around that first wide tree and let it fade. You'll have a long putter shot that you can sail close to tap in for a birdie three.
16 - They just opened this one up and turned it into a par 3. I kinda liked it the other way... but now it's better for slower arm speeds. Let the disc do the work on a RHBH and hope you have a look at the basket to lay up for a par 3.
17 - Throw it as hard as you can, then shape your second shot. Again, hope for no wind. You'll have a look for a birdie three.
18 - Throwing over the orchard is pretty fun! It's enough height to make you focus, but no so much to frustrate you. I haven't gotten a 2 here yet, but it's doable. As long as you throw it over and it has an okay flight, you'll get par.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 14, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A course with length, something this area needs.
Nice large tee pads.
Uses lots of shots to air it out or land a placement shot
Walk out signs help with direction
Garbage cans on holes 1, 5, 12, & 17
Bathrooms at hole 1 & near holes 10/11

Cons:

No tee signs yet
Need to get some bark chips laid down
Some areas still need final touches
Sometimes the main entrance can be flooded

Other Thoughts:

Tee signs coming soon!
I'm currently working to continue the clearing of areas that need it and spreading of bark chips (as I get them, which is harder then I thought)
But the course is 9 months old and I believe it's in very desent shape!!

The Filbert Orchard 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 21, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This park has needed a course for years. Someone was trying hard to to put in a good course, but the location in the park could have better, it's completely flat.

Has long concrete tee pads. This is be very useful in the wetter months of the year.

Cons:

Several of the fairways cross paved walking paths. This is not good. In the summer there are many families walking these paths and many bicyclist flying down the path that you can't see until after you have thrown your disc.

For a new course the length of some holes seem a bit long. They don't fit with the rest of the course. Course need multiple pins on the long holes.

The basket chains don't react very well. The chains seem heavy. The s-hooks at the top are to tight and don't swing, they get stuck when pushed in.

Other Thoughts:

I don't see any gravel base under the tee pads. How much prep went into the tee pad install? This could cause problems in the future.

Worth the $5 park fee 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 14, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Requires you to use most discs in your bag.
Beautiful setting.
Nicely designed for all ratings and throwing styles.
Nicely-roughed concrete tees.
Good partnership with Oregon State Parks.
Take the ferry across the Willamette River.
Volunteers willing to do the work to continue to improve course.

Cons:

No practice basket; can use 18 basket when not being played.
Cheap baskets (chains already rusting).
No need for the fault line on tees (should have saved the concrete and bought Mach III or V baskets)
$5 per day or $30 for an annual pass that works in some other Oregon state parks.
I bet it will be pretty soggy during the wet season.

Other Thoughts:

1: Good starter hole to air it out but be careful of the OB on right rough.
2: A lefty-hater designed this hole:) Only useful shot to get on green is thumber.
3: Difficult to find tee (better signage needed). Beautiful green.
4: Blind tee shot (not a fan of those). Bring a spotter for this hole (lots of deep rough).
5: Rewards you for going for it by opening up into a field if you make it.
6: ACE RUN!
7: Dynamic design; split fairway requires parking it after split to hit approach window for a decent non-thumber shot.
8: Air it out for a possible birdie.
9: Long open hole that basically requires two straight driver shots. Too rough for rollers.
10: Blind tee shot. A hard hyzer should get you a birdie.
11: Hit the window in the trees for a birdie. Going long left or right makes a birdie impossible.
12: Signature hole #1. Has a beautiful tunnel shot that makes you want to go for a difficult ace run. Throw straight and long for a birdie of straight and safe for an easy par.
13: Birdie is possible if you can scoot onto wooded green, otherwise putt must be low and fast to avoid low-hanging branches.
14: Blind tee shot when leaves are on trees. Elevated basket on stump.
15: Hit gap between large tree and shrub/treeline for a shorter look at parking your approach shot otherwise 2nd shot will be a 2nd drive.
16: Nice challenging drive that is best served using a long s-shot, but must park it at the green opening in the trees to have a chance for a 2 but most likely a 3.
17: Break out your roller, maybe twice. Watch out for picnickers.
18: Signature hole #2. Awesome hole to end on, throwing through (or better over) orchard trees.
