Prepare for a Workout! The Best of the Foxes

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- some very cool elevation change throughout course
- high level of technical challenge in this mostly wooded course
- intense workout with majority long holes
- nice large concrete tees
- baskets, though basic, are serviceable and catch well enough
- fair but tight, challenging fairways
- picturesque setting in a pretty quiet park with mature trees
- well maintained
- garbage can and donation box at start of course, garbage cans throughout course
- hole 17 has unique terrain unlike the rest of the course (see below)

Cons:

- tee signs only have the most rudimentary maps
- some newer players may consider this course a bit too brutal
- rough in places is extremely rough and you'll pick up lots of brambles
- only very limited navigation aids; some challenges getting around
- limited amenities; no restrooms near disc golf course
- some backtracking after hole 9 to get to the hole 10 start near parking lot

Other Thoughts:

Silver Fox was my first stop of the morning and I wasn't expecting such a workout! This place wore me out; the elevation change is near the best I've see in Wisconsin. In addition, this course is LONG. Yes, I've played longer, but they typically have more than 18 holes. This one clocks in at just under 7,000 feet and most of it is not flat. With the other foxes nearby, this is a great place to spend a day.

It's hard to find many true cons for Silver Fox. I think the 2 biggest complaints are navigation and the rough. For most of the course, navigation isn't too bad and mostly flows well. However, there are very few navigation aids and in a few places this makes things frustrating. I managed to play all of hole 13 thinking it was hole 8 (partially my bad for not looking at the tee sign well enough) and then had to backtrack to find the real hole 8. After hole 7, you do not want to cross the road. Hole 8 is on the same (right) side of the road as you continue past hole 7, across the street from 13. Similarly, after hole 9, I ended up backtracking through the fairways for holes 1 and 2 to get to the parking lot and start the back 9 loop with hole 10. This was not very intuitive and could have been more cleanly designed.

As a more minor complaint, in places the rough is very rough and you will pick up tons of brambles you'll sit there picking off. I'll admit this is one of those things that really sours my mood during disc golf. I'm used to getting scraped up and poked with thorns but at least the pain is fast and I can move on! The brambles take forever to pull off and I guess I'm just not the most patient person. However, I've seen much worse rough. The situation at Silver Fox is definitely tolerable.

With all of that said, this is an awesome place to play disc golf. The technical challenge is high here, and most of the holes are over 300 feet. There are lots of mature trees and it's generally a pretty course to play on, with some opportunities to spot wildlife such as whitetail deer. You will need a variety of shots to succeed here, and precision is key as the fairways are pretty tight and unforgiving. A water hazard on this course would really make it next level.

Equipment here is generally good; the baskets and tee signs are nothing incredible but work well enough. Upgraded maps would be a nice improvement. The tees are excellent - not only concrete, but nice large pads and seemed to be level. There's only one set of tees and baskets, but honestly sometime I prefer it this way. While offering different skill levels for different players is a fantastic feature, not every course can put in this amount of money, nor has the space for it. I think one excellent layout is preferred to several mediocre ones, and the one Silver Fox has is top notch.

Hole 13 ended up being one of my favorite holes - despite being over 500' which doesn't tend to be my preferred type of shot. After a long, tight shot from elevation, it opens up a bit near the basket, but the hill drops off after it, so if you approach the basket too aggressively you're going down the hill. It's kind of brutal but it's a fun challenge.

Hole 17 was probably best, though. After walking through this entire course with some nice woods and typically dirt/grass groundcover, suddenly you walk up to 17 and you're playing on a rocky hillside with coniferous trees around - I felt like I'd stepped in to Colorado or something. It is almost all rocks, and then on 18 you're back to the forest. It's just this little chunk of different terrain for one hole which was really cool.

Overall, I really enjoyed my round here. It is definitely a workout so come prepared. You can play all 3 foxes in one day but it will start to wear you down. While this course might not be the top echelon in Wisconsin (there's tons of competition), it is one of the best in far southern Wisconsin and absolutely worth a trip from Madison, Milwaukee, or Chicago. If you enjoy woods disc golf and elevation change, Silver Fox fits the bill.

Pros:

-Silver Fox is the most challenging of the 3 Fox courses here in Silver Lake. After Hole 1, there are no easy birdies.

-Although several years old now, the tee pads and baskets are still in great shape.

-Multiple elevation changes along the way are a lot of fun!

-Most fairways are heavily wooded on both sides and the rough really encourages you to stay on the fairway even if you have to disc down.

-Navigation is good, the only tricky spot is between 9 and 10 but after 9, you head back to the parking lot. The tee pad for 10 is very close to 1. Easy to follow if you have a course map or Udisc.

-I always appreciate the loop back to the parking lot after 9 holes.

-The signature hole here is 17. It's not a Top of the World type of view from the tee pad, but I love it!

Cons:

-There are very basic signs at each tee pad that give you the distance and a hole "map".

-The rough is very rough on several holes but it's not a big deal if you can stay in the fairway.

-There are no benches or any other amenities but there were a few garbage cans.

-Mountain bike trails run through this park and across a few fairways like 17.

-Sometimes the mosquitoes can be horrible but they weren't bad for this round. Bring bug spray!

Other Thoughts:

I have played Silver Fox a lot since it opened up almost 10 years ago and finally decided to write this long overdue review for one of my favorite courses in the SE WI/NE IL area. My friends and I usually skip it in the summer because of the crazy rough, but decided to give it a go on Sunday. I'm glad we did because I got a 2 on Hole 12 and a 3 on 15!

Pros:

This is a challenging one! If you can card a 2 on any of these holes, you'll be talking about it on the drive home and telling your spouse/kids about it when you arrive. This is textbook "drive, approach, putt" disc golf. There's plenty of elevation change, tight fairways, punishing rough, and long holes. It's going to kick your butt and you're going to like it. It's incredibly fair and will quickly determine who the best disc golfer is among the group.

Course flow for the most part is pretty intuitive, though the walk from 9 to 10 is a bit confusing.

Equipment does the job. Cement tees and a barebones tee sign (hole # and distance).

The terrain here is ideal for disc golf. Wooded, hilly, away from it all. A fantastic place to clear your mind and escape for a couple hours!

Cons:

I played in early spring, but I would imagine that the rough here is devastating in later summer. Especially with longer holes where there is more variance in where drives actually end up. Similarly, I'd imagine it gets quite buggy.

I would imagine this course is quite un-motivating for beginners. I would also not recommend playing alone since spotters would be beneficial in many areas.

Other Thoughts:

All things considered, we drove about two hours to play the three courses (45 holes) in Silver Lake and it was worth it. We started out building up our confidence at Red Fox and ended at Silver Fox. My legs were quite sore the next day, but it's certainly worthy of a day trip!

Remarkable Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 9, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Challenge of the course was an advanced level, i found myself having to stop and think about the types of throws needed, many times not able to reach the basket in a single drive off the tee which i really appreciate. Also, the level of difficulty was CONSTANT throughout the entire course, there were no easy holes, but at the same time there were not any annoying or overly difficult holes.I never like to see courses with random 150' easy layup holes mixed in with a bunch of 400'+.
- Requires variation of throwing skills, this course really challenged my skills in hyzer flips, forehands, anny turnovers, and playing smart lay ups off the tee as well as control throwing down hills. TIP: An overstable putter or midrange will handle better when thrown down hill.
- Not overly wooded, all of the holes had a clear pathway to throw and i never felt like there was a luck factor involved yet at the same time there was still a challenge, so many courses in wisconsin are so heavily wooded that you are playing plinko instead of disc golf. Really appreciated the difficulty being in hitting the right line and not about getting lucky!
- Replay-ability! I i could come back to this course 100 times and still never throw a perfect round, no annoying holes. Most courses i always come away complaining about 1 or more holes that are not fun to play, this is the FIRST course that i had 0 complaints design-wise when i was done.
- Quality of property is top tier, moderately hilly and interesting views. Also provides for good exercise but not overly difficult to walk.
- Tee pads were large enough, grippy and always pointed toward the right direction
- Grooming was done perfectly, not many branches hanging out into the fairway lines unless they were from a tree in the fairway that was meant to be there.
- Tee pads were often located in a way to prevent people from cheating with big sky hyzer lines to avoid the designed play of the hole, this is great to see.
- I can tell a lot of thought and advanced planning went into this course design.

Cons:

- I think it was after hole 9, or wherever you had to cross the road i accidentally skipped a hole i think i went to 11 and had to go back to play 10. This isnt a big deal, the next time i play i would know but for new people it was the only part of the course i wasn't sure where to go.
- No maps available at entry, not a big deal but nice to have, even a sign that you can take a picture of with a phone would be nice.

Other Thoughts:

- I couldn't believe i didn't have to pay to play here, i did donate money however.
- The only thing missing is some water hazard, and maybe some 700'+ multi-drive holes mixed in.. but this course is a consistent advanced challenge all the way to the end, to add more distance and challenge might push away some of the intermediate-advanced crowd, i think the course is perfectly targeted toward advanced level play right now but could easily become a pro-level course.
- I noticed good room left behind most of the tee pads which means the course could have longer tee pad placements in the future for even more of a challenge, maybe championship
pro level potential there.
- This is one of my new favorite courses in wisconsin, thanks to Terry Miller for building a well rounded advnaced disc golf course in the state of wisconsin, we need more of these, PLEASE.

The gem of SE Wisconsin 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 7, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I've waited a few years to review this one, knowing that once the teepads were in, it would give a much better perspective. Between the design and the county / locals maintaining this course, it's a must play in the Kenosha / Racine area.

-Parking area is located right next to hole #1 (#10 just up from there) and the end of #18.
- Plenty of signs indicating where to go to begin and for the next tee.
- Large and level teepads on each hole, that start wider in the back and narrow slightly to the front.
- Good mix of distances, elevations, and tight / open shots.
- Off-fairway can be punishing for a bad shot, but not so brutal you can't get in to retrieve your discs.
- Trash cans on most holes.
- Tee-signs on all holes that seem to be fairly accurate for direction and distance.
- Good flow between holes, so as not to jam up course traffic.

Cons:

- Not much in the way of benches, which is really only a "con"
for me when it's wet and you want a clean spot for your bag when you tee off.

Other Thoughts:

This is a challenging, but fair course. Fair, because it's maintained well enough that if you can throw the shots you plan, you most likely won't get sniped by random brush and dead branches.

It's remarkable the differing terrain and tee-shots that you're getting all on this one property. #9, 11, 13 and 17 are some of my favorite holes anywhere and they're all located here. 9 looks like a jail of trees straight out, but there are lines that can be hit there that leave you with an easy up to the pin. 11 and 13 use elevation, but play very differently. The challenge to keep it low on 11 and to hit the opening on 13 can be rewarding. 17 reminds me a bit of Montana and seems very out of place. It brings a smile to your face when you walk out and see what your about to play!

If you've got time to play this and add Grey / Red Fox courses, just up the road, you'll have a great day of disc golf ahead of you.

amazing course that is rough around the edges 2+ years drive by

Pros:

beautiful course that is VERY challenging. in july the place was impossibly green. and the over growth once you are off the fairways were pretty very brutal. staying on the fairway is CRUCIAL, even at the expense of distance.
the elevation change was also close to ideal! great mix of up and down hill without being too arduous.
tee signs were adequate. concrete pads are excellent. navigating to the next hole was very straight forward.
i would love to see how elite players tackled this course.
i personally ended up throwing an alarming number of rollers out of the rough.
did i mention many of the greens are like 10 meters wide?

Cons:

if you cant keep your disc on a 10 meter wide fairway, this could be a very frustrating round.
the bugs were not out of control, but we did keep getting these large bodied daddy long legs spiders on our bags.
i believe there were bathrooms, but i did not happen to see them.
you WANT TO USE a spotter on more holes than naught.

Other Thoughts:

as a free course (weekday) in a verdant park, this place was gorgeous.
to be fair, we only played this place because the river course we had aspired to play was under umpteen feet of water. no joke.
that said, there was only standing water on a single hole (#1) here. so even after a deluge, you can still play this course without driving through deep amounts of water :)

Bright future 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 9, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

All 18 holes have good concrete tees, and baskets in great condition.

This place is the real deal. You will face challenge fairways that will demand the most you have to offer. You will be using nearly every shot in your bag, and will likely need to scamble to get out of the menacing rough.

A great amount of elevation changes, wonderfully implemented.

Has plenty of long holes for the big arms, but you better still be accurate! This course will not take it easy and give you many open rips.

Holes 11 and 17 can be listed as pros just by themselves. Absolutely amazing holes.

Cons:

Tee signs. All that the tee signs show is the hole number and the distances. Would be very nice to have an actual map, especially considering the number of times the basket is not visible from the tee.

The rough is very rough on the back nine. Hopefully it clears up a bit as this sees more play. You could easily leave with scratches and cuts.

Not necessarily a con, but don't bring beginners here.

Other Thoughts:

This is an absolutely fantastic course. It is very challenging. I honestly like this even better than the nearby grey fox. This is currently what I believe to be amoung the very best courses in SE Wisconsin.

A true gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 22, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

I'll start with the basics, 18 Chainstar baskets in excellent shape, big, and caught well. Big, grippy, level tee pads - you can get a nice run up on these - you'll need it on many holes!

Quality of disc golf - holy cow. This course plays up, around, and through a series of wooded hills - elevation is prominently featured on this course, every hole requires precise, technical shots from tee to basket, and while you spend most of your time in the woods, no hole is particularly unfair with a too-narrow fairway. Hole 17 in particular feels like a Rockies type mountain setting, shooting over a wide ravine-like terrain feature.

You'll be shooting backhand, forehand, tomahawking or thumbing it whenever you inevitably wind up in some rough, taking any other manner of shot types, and will need every shot in your arsenal and disc in your bag. Distances are often long and challenging, but never patently absurd - you will need to put together strings of long, accurate shots to score well here!

Course is also free (aside from holidays, when you have to pay to enter the park), which is nice, but honestly, this is a course worth paying to play.

Cons:

Only two I could really tell, both of which are fixable:

1) Not much hole signage. The front 9 had what appeared to be temporary signs, with handwritten distance/pars, but the back 9 was just poles saying the hole number. This is likely a later step in the course building process, given its relative infancy, but is an area for improvement.

2) Only a front 9 map was available at the start of the course, and the course was fairly easy to navigate until 14-15 or so, which was a narrow muddy path. A few transitions from then on out were tough to figure out - 15->16 had no next tee signs, and is a possible "get yourself lost" point. I actually got turned back to 10 here, before figuring out where 16 was. Again, fixable with some work / better signage.

Other Thoughts:

A few guys were doing some work, clearing out brush/branches on hole #1 when I played - earlier reviews criticized some of the gnarly rough - the rough was not really an issue playing in February, but maybe this is work being done to address the rough for the summer?

Also on site at this park - bathrooms are present close to the parking lot / tee #1, and this park also features a beach on a lake, so take a dip and cool yourself off after you traverse this course - you will be hot and tired after playing Silver Fox in the summer!

Not particularly beginner or stroller friendly, so this one's probably not a place to bring the little ones, but you do have Grey/Red Fox nearby, plus the aforementioned beach adjacent to the Silver Fox course. Add this all together, and you can make the little town of Silver Lake a destination for a wonderful day of disc golf, though this course by itself absolutely would warrant a trip on its own!

Finally, I don't say this lightly, but this course has the bones to be a legit 5.0. The pure quality of disc golf, and the course composition is there for a 5.0 rating...fix some of the wonky later transitions and put in good permanent signage, and this is course achieves its perfection.

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Silver Fox DGC is an intricate course that plays over rich terrain, with lots of subtle and not so subtle elevation covered with different levels of woodedness to test your game. The course is technical, but even in its still somewhat raw state not so technical as to be stifling. Challenging par 3s and true par 4s require considered placement and risk/reward assessment to manage: you'll definitely get punished for playing too aggressively. Distance is never gratuitous, but rather the product of good design that harnesses the inherent features of the land. There are several different environments the course plays through, and that variety helps mix things up. Silver Fox requires a well-rounded game to score well.

The best holes require you to make technical shots while contending with hazardous elevation. Roll-aways are a common threat, but can be managed with smart play. Baskets are often smartly positioned to ensure that well-executed approaches are as important as your tee shots; you have to string together good shots to score well. It's a well thought out design that provides technical play and requires thoughtful management owing to the importance of placement and the various hazards in play.

Cons:

I didn't come away feeling that there were any major cons. Rather, small things keep this from being a top course in my eyes. The design is great, and perhaps hard to screw up given the awesome land it sits on, but I also feel it could even further maximize the surroundings to produce a top level course. There are some minor recurring themes, such as holes playing along slightly rising elevation paired with blind shots, that are a bit over-repeated. Such nit-picks don't keep the course from being great, only truly outstanding.

The course was raw during my summer visit, although concrete tees were in the process of being poured and are likely in now. Signage was similarly underdeveloped, and navigation got a bit ambiguous in a few spots. Nothing too hard to manage. The play itself was unimpeded: grooming was solid.

The course is not beginner friendly. It requires above average accuracy to properly enjoy. That said, with such a spectrum of courses in the immediate area - Red Fox is fine for absolute beginners, and Grey Fox sits somewhere between Red and Silver - the focus on higher level play here doesn't seem like it should detract.

Other Thoughts:

Silver Fox DGC is under the radar considering the caliber of play it offers. I've played some awesome courses - Selah Lakeside, Sugaree, Harmon Hills, Moraine - and Silver Fox has the makings of joining them. I loved the beautiful environments and shots that required thoughtfulness. It was the highlight of a day trip that spanned nine courses including the much-heralded Fairfield Park. For my game, Silver Fox was the slightly better of the two in its challenging and varied wooded golf. Don't miss the opportunity to visit!

Loved hole 17. It made me think I was playing a Colorado course. When you walk from 16 and to the tee on 17 it is like walking into another part of the country - very cool.

Cons:

No doubt this is a challenging course
I could see if the underbrush was in bloom it may turn into a frustrating day looking for discs but as it was the day I played it was great.

Other Thoughts:

Pros:

Secluded beauty
Very challenging
Variety of shots needed
Variety of terrain and elevations
Proximity to multiple Disc Golf parks
Other park activities and hikes/beach
Still new so under the radar a bit
Very proficient layout that lets you play only 9 & 9 or all 18
Tight Long fairways with no room for error
The Land is amazing and the design works really well w/ it
The back 9 really kick this course into gear

Cons:

Concrete tees are currently going in
Like most people point out, it's rough, lost 2 discs 1st time rough
No signs or maps
Too long too difficult (not a con but this is an advanced course)
Not for novice players, I think someone just starting out could get turned off because of how tight and long the fairways are
Lack of very short tees for beginners, they should use the wood chips when the concrete goes in to make short tees
The front 9 is a little less varied, just long straight shots w/ trees

Other Thoughts:

This course is no joke. The rough is very rough. You are going to get scratched, sun burnt, bug bites, really tired from long hike, this course can kick your butt! No one can debate the challenge of this course, i've only been playing a couple years but I feel really good when I par a hole on this course. It's hard to rate this course cause it's not complete. Depending on what the final tee pad count is and what the signs look like this course could be even cooler. I would love to see short tees for families and beginners and really good signs with maps and multiple pin placements. You can tell that a lot of work went into this course and if you live in milw. this is one of the toughest courses in the area. I think adding a few alternate pin locals on the front 9 could make this course excellent, it just seems like most shots on the front 9 feel a little too similar to each other.

The Bear South 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 31, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

When we pulled into the parking lot there was one other car. From the lack of people, compared to the full parking lot of Grey Fox across town, I assumed the course would be mediocre.

-The 1st hole starts in the woods with a short but somewhat elevated drive. Moving onto the 2nd hole and beyond it became harder and harder to see the pin from the tee pad, which made for long fun holes.

-A lot of people would dislike the thick vegetation off the green, which can swallow discs, but with a spotter it wasn't very difficult to find them and it added to the challenge; do I lay up or go for distance? Second throws out of the rough could be pretty tough.

-The course is built on both sides of a ridge or esker I believe, and the course does a wonderful job of using the elevation.

-While the course is set in a park, we saw one other group playing and few users of the park. It felt like we were playing a pretty remote track at times. And, while you did traverse over the park road a few times, multiple holes kept you away from it.

-Long wooded holes, with tough consequences off the green, narrow lanes, rough terrain, and built on a hill that made it feel like a workout when you're done reminded me of Highbridge Hills - The Bear. I love that course and this one was reminiscent of it.

-Hole 17 is great. Unlike any hole I've played in WI or elsewhere for that matter.

Cons:

-Currently no teepads. Places for pads are dug out with gravel in them ready to be poured. Once pads are in this will be even more of a gem.

-Hole signs didn't show map or distance on some.

-Back 9 is newer and rougher than front 9, which I don't mind. Needed some mowing and was more weeded greens than grass in some spots currently.

-It's not closer to where I'm from.

Other Thoughts:

If you like feeling like you got a workout in after playing a round and want to play a long challenging course, this is one is a great play and one of my new favorites. I'm looking forward to seeing this course in the next few years as it improves.

Pros:

I'm going to start out by saying that I gave this a 4 because It's very apparent that concrete tees are going to be added at some point. With just natural pads it's 3.5. With that being said this is an awesome addition to the area. This course is just as challenging as the grey fox down the road. The baskets are all chainstars that are in awesome shape and catch great. There is quite a bit of elevation here that is used very well. You'll be required to use all different types of shots to do well here. The lanes were all fair yet challenging with a good variety in distances too. The course starts and ends right by the parking lot and hole 9 even ends and 10 starts there too making it easy to only play 9 without a ton of extra walking. As mentioned earlier hole 17 is unlike anything I've seen around here. Probably the signature hole. There was nobody else there on a beautiful Friday evening. I don't know if it's still kind of unknown but it was a very quiet and serene round. The course is free except holiday weekends in the summer. Excellent design here. There are a few longish walks between holes but this was only done to make all holes great and not have lame filler type holes. Great job in this regard. They have signs or next tee arrows spray painted on the road or a tree so navigation was a non issue.

Cons:

As the course gets broken in these will all be less of or a non issue. But as of now are worth mentioning. The rough off the fairway in a lot of spots is THICK. Be sure to pay close attention to where your shot landed or it'll be a potentially long search. The fairways being very new have a lot of little stumps and other tripping hazards. Not that big of a deal but just watch your step. The course was very well maintained in the grass areas just the newer fairways.

Other Thoughts:

This course is still in it's infancy so I'm basing the 4 disc rating on what it will be like soon. This along with the red and grey fox courses down the road will make for an outstanding day of disc golf. Best in the area for sure. We played Fairfield in IL first (both white and gold) then this and were beat down afterward. I'd planned on hitting up the grey too but this course is no joke. Experienced players will be challenged here. It's not a must play YET. When they get concrete pads the silver lake area is definitely a must play if in the area. I think it already is but when this thing gets completed look out.

You make me feel like like saying foxy... 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 12, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The silver fox is a fine contrast to other nearby foxes. Combined they make a fine day or weekend of disc golf. In SF there are some great long fairways that have been carved out of the rocky wooded hills and some challenging shorties to keep you on your toes. By the end of the day you will likely need every shot and disc in your bag. The designers have created some very challenging layouts with very fun use of the moraine terrain. And there is a surprise at the end! Think badlands... or black hills. I have not seen such terrain in Wisconsin before. The signs, garbage cans, benches, are much improved over the rough early years.

Cons:

The edges are a bit rough so stay on the fairways if you can. The terrain is a smidgen rocky so be sure to wear some good boots and watch your step.

Other Thoughts:

For five long years I thought you were my man
But I found out I'm just a link in your chain
You got me where you want me
I ain't nothin' but your fool
Ya treated me mean Oh you treated me cruel
Chain, chain, chain
Chain of fools

A Tale of Two Courses: Front Nine Ok. Back Nine Dreamy. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 27, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

New back 9 Amazing!
Very challenging.
Now 18 holes.
Back nine has a pretty landscape.
Not flat. Lots of hills. Landscape used to course's advantage.
Very wooded.
The park, that it sits in, is gorgeous. Huge lake nearby.
Many different types of shots.

Cons:

Front nine is decent. Still better than most courses in the area
Easy to lose a disc in the summer time.
Frustrating if you're not very good.

Other Thoughts:

During my first time playing the course, I just assumed it was 9 holes. Sign still said 9 holes. Map still showed nine holes. Fox River park was closed and I was forced to go play here instead. While playing, I accidentally came across hole 13 and that made me realize there were 9 more holes! What a treat that was.

Front Nine: Fun little course in the woods. A mix between long and short holes and all are somewhat challenging. Different types of shots.

Back Nine: Whoa. This is a challenge. And very well laid out! A mix of shots going uphill, downhill, and all in the woods. The landscape is as good as it gets for this area. No houses nearby. Wooded and pretty. Easy to navigate. Worth the hour drive!! And I make that drive often for this course and the nearby courses at Fox River Park (Grey and Red Fox).

Hole 13 is very cool. You must throw downhill on a long hole.
Hole 17 makes you feel like you are in Colorado or in the mountains of New Mexico. The surrounding landscape of the hole is rocky. Very fun shot with a valley to your left and you sort of throw over that valley. Coolest hole I have come across in the Midwest.

Check this place out if you're sick of the mundane mid-western courses in your home towns.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 2, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 hole course set in a large park, suitable for hiking, cross country skiing, etc.

Chainstar baskets, all in good repair, and caught well. No issues here. One pin position per hole.

Concrete tee pads. One tee per hole. Plenty good enough, and serve the purpose well.

The golf here is pretty damn fantastic. For 9 holes, you'll be hit with a good variety of shots. Every hole has defined fairways lined with trees, and some elevation in the form of rolling hills.

Nice use of distance to increase the challenge. Holes range from 300'-500', and there are really no pitch n' putt type holes. You must hit a good line to score well here. The woods lining the fairways are unforgiving, and will cost you strokes.

Cons:

The tee signs were pretty basic here. I took a picture of the large course map near tee 1, which helped quite a bit. Navigation gets a little wonky in a couple spots here, including after hole 9. You'll need to cross the road, and wind through the woods a little bit to get back to the desired parking lot.

This probably isn't a great spot for beginners. You need to be pretty accurate, and with some distance, to score well here.

Other Thoughts:

The update to this course turns it from a really nice 9, to a pretty damn phenomenal 18. Challenge at every turn, and just a plethora of fun shots. It has probably jumped into my WI top ten because of challenge, length, and fun factor.

Updated since first review, and the move to 18 holes.

Very Promising 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 25, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very good "golf" holes, if you don't have a lot of time and still want to be challenged this is the place to be. (Written while still a 9-hole course)

Cons:

All the cons are things that have to do with this being a work in progress - for example tee pads. I played in less than perfect conditions and while not great, the tee areas are still very adequate.

Other Thoughts:

I honestly can't wait to see this course in all of its 18-hole glory. There are definitely some championship level holes here and my round was very enjoyable.

New with back 9 coming 2015 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 25, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I couldn't write this any better so I copied it from the website. This 260-acre park features one of the best sandy beaches in southeastern Wisconsin. Excellent swimming areas, picnic areas, bathhouse, concession stand, picnic shelters, lakeside playground equipment, soccer fields, grills windsurfing area, sledding, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, fishing and convenient parking all combine to create a popular getaway on summer days. Nature trails traverse the rolling landscape and reward hikers with a sweeping overview of Silver Lake and the surrounding countryside. The park is located on County Highway "F", one-mile south from State Highway 50. Entry fee charged from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend while lifeguards are on duty.

The park land is awesome and quite a bit better than Grey & Red Fox down the road. Rolling hills and lots of rough. The freshly cleared fairways are pretty to the eye.

Brand New Chainstar baskets.

Tee posts with signs. Hole # only. The flow was very good.

Challenging course where staying in the fairway pays off.

Hole #1 is a really fun downhill hole.

Hole #6 is a great par 4. You have a choice to throw a mid range or driver. The farther you throw the easier the birdie opportunity. If you miss the fairway kiss the birdie goodbye.

Cons:

Currently the tee pads are wood chips. Some are short and difficult to throw from.

The signs are basic with hole #.

I really dislike holes #3 & 8. The are L shape holes to the left. Super tricky lines.

Maybe this will change but holes like 4 & 5 seemed like tweener holes.

Other Thoughts:

The parking area near hole #1 is tricky to find. It's parking lot #5 which is tucked around the corner from #4. Check the park map.

I really hope the back 9 is better as the course is supposed to expand to 18 next year? With being pay to play I prefer the free course down the street.
