pretty park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 13, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Easy enough to find. Good use of available land. Tees are in good condition. Baskets are color coordinated. I liked the one tee box dual baskets. There are some next tee signs here and there and I had no trouble finding the next tee box. New baskets. I was seven down with no bogies. Several short holes, A few long holes.

Cons:

Looks like it could get wet and muddy after a rain. Goes around and through a playground. Need to be careful if children are there. One over the water (235 feet) and one basket close to the waters edge. Shouldn't be a problem for most people. One time I did throw at the wrong basket but not a big deal, I parred the hole. Not many trash cans available.

Other Thoughts:

I would throw this again if I'm in the area. It was a fun course. When you see the playground, park. Hole one's tee box will be to the left by the road.

Small Town Gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- The Idea is brilliant. I have never seen a course with one tee for two baskets. The color scheme makes it work. It is easy to just pay attention to yellow baskets on the front 9, and then look for blue on the back. It really is a great space saving idea and it is executed extremely well.

- The park area is very nice and well kept. The grass wasn't freshly cut, but I didn't notice anywhere that was in extreme need for mowing. It is remarkably flat, so there is not any elevation change to speak of, but that is a problem with Louisiana, not the course.

- The layout of the course was pretty good. The first 6 holes (1-6 & 10-15, excluding 12) were wooded and if the front was a hyzer, then the back was an anhyzer. It seemed well mixed up where you were constantly changing throws. The open holes (12, 7-9, & 16-18) were reasonable. There aren't too many obstacles on any of them, but they are a nice change of pace from the wooded ones.

- Color coded mando signs were a cool feature. It was easy to tell which mandos were for what hole with the color changes.

- Tee signs were excellent, very simple design, but looked very good. The baskets were DisCatcher, color-coded, and in pretty much new condition. The tee boxes were a rubber mat, with circles in them. They were in great condition, but I'm not really sure how good they are for throwing (See Cons).

- On 7/16 there is OB in the woods to the left. There are excellent signs and posts along the wood line to clearly mark where the OB line is.

Cons:

- The pond could use a cleaning. There was algae all over it. Just not nice to look at. I'm not a marine biologist, so I don't know if it is practical, but it'd be nice.

- The rubber tee pads are a little weird to me. I can't say they were bad, but it felt like they were almost too grippy and kept you from really rotating on them. It's not too big of an issue on the short holes, but on long ones, you need to be able to rotate through, and I felt like I was sticking to the pad.

- Although the mando signs were really nice and color-coded, the blue ones did not stand out very well. On 14 there is a mando for you to go to the left of a tree to keep you from going over 9/18's tee box. But I didn't see it on the tee sign and I couldn't see it from the tee, so I threw it right down that lane, and it missed the mando I didn't know was there. The mandos should be on the signs (they could be and I just missed it), and the blue mando arrows could use some help standing out.

- On 7/16, the woods on the left and behind the basket are OB. It is clearly marked out in the field and it is marked on the tee sign, but it is not obvious on the sign. I had to look very close at it to see that.

- Although I like the simple aspect of the course and I'm sure they didn't want any super difficult holes since most of the players there are probably new, #10 is just way too easy. There is OB left of the basket and if you run at the basket too hard you will go in the pond, but it's a 150ft (if that) with very little tree interference. It's as much of an automatic birdie than any other hole I've ever seen. If there isn't anywhere to make it longer, make an OB line short and right to form an island green. It's just too easy as it sits.

Other Thoughts:

- The course is a fun, not too easy, not too hard course. If you are on 165 between Monroe and Alexandria, I would recommend playing here. It's right of the highway, took about 1 min from the highway to park.

- There was only one other group and two walkers when we played, and since it's a small town, I can't imagine it ever being much more crowded than that. Although, if for some reason the park was more crowded, I'd imagine there could be a lot of backups with the shared tee boxes (clearly the biggest flaw with the idea), but I really don't foresee, this ever happening.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+Innova Pro 28 discatchers
+excellent course design
+great variety of shots required, from long and wide open to short and forehand friendly
+good signage

Cons:

-bugs. Although I sprayed down before playing, was still chased by bugs throughout the round which I played in the middle of the day. I'd hate to see what happens near sunset! Kept hearing the Doobie Brothers song in my head "It Keeps You Running"
-some slippery tee pads, be careful
-flat
-swampy

Other Thoughts:

Although there are 18 baskets on this course, there is only one set of tees (with an exception or two) and so this course really feels like a 9-hole course. For being in the middle of nowhere though this is a fun course that the designer made the most of. The land is pretty swampy and gets muddy quickly. It has 6 pretty open and long holes and the rest are in the woods, so you'll get to use most or all of the discs in your bag at this one.

Nice Compact Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 2, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a fun 18 hole course, in a small park. The front 9 share t-pads with the back 9, except for 11 & 12, which had their own t-pads. Signage is excellent, you always know exactly where you are throwing. First appearances are deceiving, making some holes seem very easy, until you notice the mando. #3 has a tight out of bounds, with a basket close to the waters edge, while #12 takes you across the pond. All out of bounds are clearly marked with white posts and/or signage. There are even plenty of clever, fun signs scattered around the course. The tee pads were very large, tee signs easy to read, and mini trash cans were located at several t's, hanging on the posts. This course was very well maintained, and the creator of the course was actually there with his son, cleaning, trimming, and doing general upkeep while we were there.

Cons:

I can't think of any cons to this course. Maybe if there were a lot of players out, there might be some crossing in front of others, with the tight quarters, but the course is still nice, regardless. Ground was kind of mushy after the recent rains, but that can't be helped. You just have to deal with nature. Also, the restrooms, which are near the basketball court, leave something to be desired. Functional, but dirty. But it could be because it was a holiday weekend, and the cleaning crew hasn't been there yet....

Nice Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course is well laid out. First six holes are in the woods and I find challenging but fair. It appears the locals are working towards an 18 hole course which should bring in outside interest. One hole is a throw over water. It is reachable and makes for an interesting throw. It appears to be around a 260 foot throw. This course is easy to find and well maintained. The field could use a mowing but understand the rain has been a problem foe everyone. This course is a must to play if your on the Highway 165 corridor between Monroe and Alexandria.

Cons:

Terrain is flat, but they have worked well with the landscape they have been given. Number 4 is not well marked but I suspect they are working towards fixing that. Hole 7 could use some help on the tee box but it was adequate.

Other Thoughts:

I will play this course again when passing through. Maybe by the next time the back 9 will be complete.

Best 9-hole Course Around 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 22, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

I played this course with low expectations and came away pleasantly surprised.

This course begins in a moderately wooded area bordered by a pond and an open field near some baseball/softball diamonds. The first six holes play in the wooded area and are reasonably challenging. Water comes into play on the first hole.

The last three holes are mostly wide open with distance being the primary challenge. I think holes 7 and 8 are both over 500 ft., with 7 being over 600 if I recall correctly.

The tee pads are made from rubber circle mats. They are approximately 5x9 and have good traction. They are perfectly adequate on the shorter holes. There are tee signs at every tee, plenty of garbage cans and the course flows pretty well with only one tee in which it might not be apparent which basket to throw at.

This course is approximately 1/4 mile off Hwy. 165, the "main highway" through Olla and you can actually see the park from that highway. It's as easy to get to from 165 as you could ask.

Cons:

Holes 7 and 8 traverse a large field and are wide open. This field is apparently the parking lot for the baseball/softball diamonds and this could create some problems.

The tees are a bit small on the longer holes but because they are such low profile, it's not a problem to start a run up behind the tee box.

The #4 basket is difficult to spot from the #4 tee, but the #2 basket is not. This could create some confusion. Just remember that the #4 basket is to the left and difficult to see. Don't throw at the obvious basket straight ahead.

This course looks like it could hold some water after rains but it was dry when I played.

Other Thoughts:

This course was a pleasant surprise. This is easily the nicest 9-hole course that I have played in Louisiana. It offers much more of a challenge than I expected. It is well worth a stop if you are traveling between Alexandria and Monroe, but I wouldn't detour off I-20 or I-49 unless you just really want to bag another course.
