Brand New Long Nine Has Great Amenities! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 31, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Forks Disc Golf Course is situated on a floodplain between two forks of the Illinois River. This area is mostly flat with lots of open space. There isn't a lot of rough to deal with. The course will become much more challenging when the hundred or so small trees which have been planted here start to mature.

The amenities are brand spanking new and very cool. At the beginning of the course, there is a really nice, creative kiosk with course map and sponsors. The tee pads are large, trapezoid shaped concrete ones. The tee signs are nice metal models covered with fiberglass ( # 5 has already been broken with a rock) and the baskets are Discatchers with the red numbers on top. There are plastic laundry baskets at each hole used for garbage cans.

Although longer than most nine hole courses, the holes are mostly open. A player throwing 350' will have his way here. A old rec player like me is content just to par everything. Only two holes play shorter than 330'. Four are in the 330-375' range and two play at 450' and # 4 is 629'. The course plays 5 holes going out and then 6-9 play back to the start.

Cons:

Lots of info about Poison Oak. Stay out of the bushes.

Probably not that much challenge. I'd say the course plays as a solid recreational level. Intermediate players will smoke this course.

It's fairly wide open in places. All the planted trees will totally change the complexion of this course. It would be interested to come back in 10 years and play it again.

It's not exactly on the beaten track being on hi-way 199 which runs from Crescent City, CA on the coast to Grant's Pass, OR which is on I-5.

I'm worried that these lovely tee signs may not hold up to serious vandals.

Other Thoughts:

Nine additional holes would be great. Players in this area will have a fine course to play. It fills a void as there aren't many other choices in these parts.

if you're driving by, it's a must stop. Makes for an excellent little 30 break on the drive. nine more creative holes would definitely raise the rating to a 3.

If You Come To a Fork in the River, Take It 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 21, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Redwood Hwy has been slowly adding courses along its length, ranging from nice[Selmac} to meh[Vertical Horizons, although much potential there]. Illinois River Forks DGC raises the standard for the area.
After crossing the Illinois just west of Cave Junction, the first right takes you straight to the parking lot in half a minute. There's a new kiosk with maps right by tee #1.
Lying on a floodplain peninsula between the East and West forks of the Illinois, there's lots of open-field hucking on the longer holes, but scrub pine and red oak add a technical aspect early in the round and here and there throughout the course.. The ground cover is a mix of woody debris and grass under the trees, and sand/rock in the open stretches, with long, low ridges and humps of rock as a result of past flooding. Some of this rocky structure also seems manmade, as a gated overflow parking lot near #7 attests.
Underbrush is sparse, and unlikely to hide a disc, though hardwood leaves in fall might hide a drive. The river is too far away to come into play, though both of these factors may change with an additional 9 holes, already in the planning stage.
Without a doubt, the longest 9er I've ever played, with only 2 holes under 300', 2 over 450' and #4 at 640'! Beautiful new Discatchers, fresh cement pads and lovely signs, though the clockwise layout is easy enough to follow.
Trashcan by the kiosk, and water, bathrooms and picnic tables nearby.

Cons:

#s 3-5 have a hiking trail between you and the river, though it would take a terrible throw to reach the trail. #9's basket is close to both the road and the park host.
Its a bit on the righty hyzer-friendly side.
On a hot summer day you will bake on the open holes, but the river is close by for a cooling dip.
Summer holidays are packed here, so some holes may be unplayable.

Other Thoughts:

If you're passing through and don't have 1 1/2 hours+ to play Lake Selmac, this is the stop for you. If you've got kids, there's hiking trails, a swimming spot, and a mile or so down Hwy 199, a nature center and the Big Cat World Park, with tours.
Sustenance is just back across the river in town.

Great stop on Redwood Hwy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 11, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good use of available space and natural obstacles. Nice, long holes with the basket visible on all of them. Great signage and tee pads. Easy to navigate from one pad to the next.

Cons:

Only nine holes and I can't remember if there was a bathroom right near the course. Both of these cons are a big stretch.

Other Thoughts:

I thought this was a great course. One of the best nine hole courses I've played. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area, especially if you are playing Selmac. It is just a short drive down the hwy.

Great open course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

It is a great new course. Fun to play. It's wide open at a pretty nice park right outside of Cave Junction.

Cons:

Make sure to stay on the fairway. If you go off to the left you will probably run into problems. Wish it was 18, but it is still good.

Other Thoughts:

Worth the drive out from Medford. Especially if you hit Lake Selmac.
