New Holes, Tee pads, basket Locations in 2022 drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 18, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Course has many options and baskets are moved regularly. Udisc has all the active layouts frequently updated.

Mix of flat and wooded. Some long, some technical. Course is frequently maintained but grass and poison oak continue to grow. A valiant effort to keep them at bay.

Playable all year.

Friendly locals and active facebook group page for chatter and lost disc help.

Cons:

Homeless encampments around the perimeter on public land and some venture across the creek and mess with discs. I've had one negative encounter in three years but it happens.

When foxtails are thriving, discs are hard to find and socks are victims. Often wear gaiters on my shoes in the summer.

Other Thoughts:

Several nearby breweries make for great per and post game meeting sports.

Pros:

Kelley Park has a big parking lot and is 6 dollars for parking. The course itself starts with a wide open 300 foot hole. There's multiple pin locations, and good mix of left to right holes. There's also a great mix of distances with some birdie runs, and hole #3 crazy hard par 4. The holes have good lanes, and well defined ob. Good tee pads, and tee signs. Baskets our in good shape. There's some fun shots and holes here and the layout flows fairly well.

Cons:

Some guy non disc golfer picked up one of our discs and threw it up in a tree....wind can be a huge factor here and impacted a lot of our shots. We had some massive wind gusts, that even caused a lost disc on left side of 18 seems probably common here. It's very dry course desert feeling bring water chapstick ect. There's some tough holes here, and new players might give up, not really any signature type holes. 6 dollars to park might turn some off.

Other Thoughts:

The course is good and dosen't feel to repetitive has bag hangers on the tee posts. Worth the play but no wow factor or destination course

Dry, Flat, Semi-Long 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

3-4 basket placements per hole. Basket placement is well marked with metal spinner on each hole sign. Nice Mach X baskets. Rubber tee boxes. Bag holders on each hole. Decent course maintenance, though it doesn't require a ton of labor.

Cons:

Hot. Flat. Crowded. Parking Fee. A few wonky holes that are hidden behind shrubs and trees that are impossible to birdie and quite difficult to par. Very flat (no elevation changes.). Desert like, without grass. Lots of garbage in the parking lot (though they had a few community service members cleaning it up.). Saw several homeless wandering in the parking lot and through the course. They should have included arrows to next pin on either the baskets or hole signs. I had to pull up the digital course map a few times to find where to go.

Other Thoughts:

I didn't think poison oak was a problem here like I've read about and this area is known for. Not a beginner friendly course. I won't probably return as I live like 45 minutes away and there are better options about the same distance from me. Not a bad choice for locals, especially considering the low hole to population ratio for the South Bay. Recommend using a spotter on a few blind/narrow holes.

Kelly Park Is A Solid But Not Spectacular San Jose Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 26, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

San Jose has not been considered a hotbed for courses with just two good 9 hole courses but it's certainly gotten better with the additions of Kelly Park and the nearby Villa Maria DGC. Kelly Park is not exactly the most wonderful piece of land for a course. It's spread out and mostly flat with small trees and scrub. I've been told the poison oak can be problematic. There were plenty of players playing on the day I played. I started off following a guy and his goofy son for about three holes, then a young man with his cute, caddie girlfriend and then I hooked up and played the last three holes with a foursome of 50 year pot smokers. Good guys.

The course has the old school fiberglass signs with the spinner basket position indicators. There is a practice basket at the start along with a nice big course map. The tee pads are rubber mats, there are benches and bag holders throughout the course. The baskets are the DGA models with the always hard to read red numbers. There are some nice touches like by the # 2 tee box is planter with cactuses.

The course plays at a challenging recreation level. It's not going to stifle anyone but between the brush, tightness and distance, it will require some shot shaping and accuracy. My vote for signature hole will go to # 8. It's just 232' but the basket is tucked into grove of about 100 small trees. My least favorite hole is # 12 in the C position which plays down a gauntlet of trees playing down a road.

Cons:

No-one likes poison oak.

The park is flat.

Probably not beginner friendly.

No water or bathrooms.

Would be hot and dry on those San Jose summer days.

Lots of blind pin locations.

Other Thoughts:

Everyone agrees the designer designed a nice course here considering there isn't a whole lot to work with. I could see myself making Kelley Park a part of my regular rotation if I lived nearby. I think with 3 and 4 basket positions, you would always been getting a fresh look. Thanks for the spinner indicators. They helped me a lot.

Kelley Park Disc Golf Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 17, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is my home course and I've played it many times. The course maintenance is top notch - hats off to the SVDGC for keeping the weeds low and trimming the trees and shrubs often. This course has improved a lot over the last few years as the maintenance has really stepped up their work. Nice bunch of regulars who play here. Nice variation in hole lengths. Hole 3 C/D placement is a par 4 for most players.

Cons:

This course has lots of low trees that grab discs and a fair amount of poison oak. The natural terrain and vegetation doesn't really lend itself to a disc golf course and its impressive what was done ... but don't be surprised if you lose a disc. Some holes like 12, are narrow and reward a straight shot (or high flyover) and punish you badly for inaccuracy. $6 for parking, but you can by a season pass for $80. Can get windy on summer afternoons.

Other Thoughts:

Check this course out if you are visiting Silicon Valley, you will be rewarded with an enjoyable round of golf. Mark your disc with your phone number, they mostly get returned over time.

Kelley Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 7, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Has rubber tee pads

Has tee signs with locations of the various basket placements

Has many benches throughout course

Has multiple basket placements for all holes

Good mix of open and wooded fairways

Park is exclusive for disc golf and you won't see other parkgoers

Cons:

Rubber tee pads are slippery when wet

Baskets are hard to locate on some holes - need flags or bright paint

Needs more next tee signs - recommend a course map for the first-timer

Course is mostly flat

No variety in pars - par 54

Some holes have rough areas and need more maintenance

Other Thoughts:

This a nice, challenging 18 hole course in San Jose that I enjoyed playing while vacationing out here. I probably would have had more fun if it wasn't raining on the day I played. The rubber tee pads here are slippery when it rains. I noticed that the short, thick trees were very good in catching discs. One tree loaded with poison oak (on hole #16 I think) caught my disc and held it for a few days before I returned and climbed about 10 feet up the tree to retrieve it. The trees here are definitely a factor in losing discs. Some of the holes could have used some next tee signs to direct flow - especially at hole #4. While playing hole #4, I shot towards the #9 basket and didn't realize where the correct basket was until I referred to the course map. After holing out on #4, I went to hole #9 tee pad by mistake instead of hole #5. Fortunately, there was another player that I let play through and then followed him afterwards. The Mach X baskets were in great shape to play with but most are hard to spot from the tee pad with the trees in between. With the course mostly flat and straight and a par 54, this course left me wanting some more after finishing. Although the par is 54, I felt that there were a couple of holes (#4 and #12) that are tweeners and could be par 4's instead.

Nice course. Worth playing at least once 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Made the best use of the land to create distinctive and varied holes
- Solid teepads, signage and baskets
- Many holes require you to shape shots and use different skills to reach the basket.
- Good mix of longer/open and shorter/tighter holes. Fun to air out some long drives but also throw precise, shaped shots
- Lots of alternate pin positions - often 4 per hole.

Cons:

- Completely flat. Zero elevation change or scary approach/putts
- Lots of blind shots over thick brush
- Not beginner-friendly. Some long holes and thick brush
- No water or bathrooms
- Not much shade. I'd probably avoid this course on a hot day
- Leave your dog at home. This course was blanketed in burrs

Other Thoughts:

I commend the course designers for pushing the limits of the land. It's not situated on ideal disc golf terrain: it's completely flat and canvassed with 15-20ft trees and thick brush.

It has flaws but it's still engaging, fun and worth playing at least once

Still Raw but a fun challenge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 30, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

- plentiful parking
- mach X baskets...once you learn how to putt at them, they're excellent
- varied shot types (right to left, left to right, short, long)
- plenty of trees and other hazards
- always perfectly done flypads
- wind is a hazard (could be a con for some)
- 18 holes in San Jose...It's a new day!

Cons:

- too many blind pin locations
- no elevation changes (not the fault of the designer!)
- rough is very rough
- back 9 holes have so much rough and poison oak, its easy to lose several discs and very easy to get PO.
- navigation and signage are still lacking. Glad I had the course designer and several locals to show me around!
- the maps could describe the holes better.

Other Thoughts:

The SVDGC has taken the old orchard part of Kelley park, once renown for its horrible homeless problems and as a dump site, and turned it into a fun and challenging disc golf course in less than 5 months since it's opening. That alone is a huge achievement and I have nothing but admiration for the club and what it has accomplished.

That said, a lot more would seemingly needs to get done. especially on the back 9, where the vegetation is much thicker than the front and I felt like I was essentially hucking up prayers above the trees and hoping to land near the pin. Much of that prayer is related to the fact that many pin locations are blind from the tee and are even difficult to find once on the 'fairway'. My recommendation would be to lower the % of blind shots and let disc golfers 'naturally' clear out the greens and fairways by simply using them.

When this course matures, it will be a must play in the area because the shots are definitely quality enough to warrant your attention. I think I played 3 par 4s when I was out there and every one had a major challenge just to score a 4 though it would be possible to get a 3 if you execute your first two shots well. There are some difficult par 3s and some easier shots as well.

I look forward to seeing where this course goes in the future!

Great Start. Mean Finish. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 9, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

• A number of interesting and varied shots
• Very good tee boxes (rubber mat type), although when these mats get wet you can slip quite easily.
• Good signage in places although inconsistent in spots, likely due to the park being new.
• Nice new baskets (I think they were Mach Xs but don't quote me as it's been a while since I was there)

Cons:

• No nearby restroom or water
• Very challenging to navigate in spots
• Not beginner friendly
• Wind can come out of nowhere and blow quite hard (minor con really as wind is a part of the game)
• Pay to park ($6. Minor quibble. No quibble at all if the money goes to the course.)

Other Thoughts:

Tips:
• Do use the map.
• A spotter is a must on several holes. Two spotters would not be a bad idea on a few.

Random Thoughts:
This is a tough course to rate. The front nine holes present an interesting challenge with a good mix of short and long (some very long) and a nice variety of shot types. We even witnessed an ace on #5. Yes, there are a couple holes where the exact basket you're aiming at is tough to figure out because it's not immediately visible and/or near another hole's basket (#4 in particular), but with a little walk ahead and a close look at the basket number you'll be ok. So things are cruising along all well and fun and then you get to #10 and the basket is BURIED in a set of tree/brush/crap but it's all good because it's the C position and it's supposed to be tough, right? #11 and #12 are fairly open and uneventful outside of a fairly close OB on #12. Then you get to #13 which is a tunnel shot, which is ok. I like tunnel shots but DO NOT go off tunnel because the 'rough' is nasty and quite dense with disc grabby trees. #14 is a flat miss. First, there's a sign that reads something like 'the basket is now in the D position'. Is there a map as to where D is? Of course not. But that's not the best part, because by the time you find D, which is a 90 degree left turn a ½ mile walk into the forest, you look back at how you're supposed to shoot the shot and it's quite ridiculous. You're basically blind firing into a grove of trees. I don't get it. #15 is ok. At least you can find the basket but #16-18 (at least in the basket positions we played) put you right back into the tree fun. I'm just not seeing the flight paths on these shots (outside of maybe #18) besides maybe a pin point tomahawk. My playing companion actually quit around this time because it just stopped being fun.

Bottom Line:
I'm not sure what to say about this course. We had a blast.......and then we didn't. Maybe it would have been different with the baskets in different positions but I'm not 100% convinced a couple holes don't need a rethink but if you're in the neighborhood and you've got at least an average game, give it a whirl and see how it goes.

One more for the area that is worth it. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 5, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The signs are really accurate. With the spinner for the A, B C positions displayed well. (there was one in the 'D' position that was not listed on the sign.) All Tee's have rubber pads that are in great shape. The hole shaping makes you try a lot of uncomfortable shots. The wind helps this. This is not an easy place to play to my taste but was a lot of fun. Every third or fourth hole has trash cans. The course was very clean other than the 3 bottles I packed out. All Tees have bag hangers and cut chunks of log to sit on.

Cons:

The back 9 has poison oak in the trees/bushes that seemed to be utterly missing from the front 9. There is no water I saw available on site.

Other Thoughts:

This place was fun to play. It was about 95 degrees and had a good breeze. There is a fee to park, totally worth it. (not sure what the fee was as we missed the pay robot on the way in, and it was the 4th of july. We got lucky) There is no elevation change but the orchard makes it fun. The back 9 have a lot of shots that require spotters, that is to say that the holes are blind and even the landing zones are blind. Makes for a unique challenge. The trees are pretty short and don't provide much shade. My impression is that the grass could get pretty gnarly early in the year, but was all beat down and had hard packed dirt. Some of the holes have a possibility for cross shots from other holes, especially on the front 9. Not that it's bad, but something to look out for. When we played, there was almost no traffic, but I can picture this place getting busy. As some care about this. I'll mention that there is no proper 'bowl hole'. Whatever. Still this was a fun place to play. Makes a perfect bookend to Hellyer and La Raza. I like this place and will come back. I could Also mention, NOT for beginners! Go to Chabot Park in San Leandro for that!

Scrubby with lots of blind holes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 6, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good location near SJSU in the middle of San Jose. Multiple pin positions on every hole.

Cons:

The terrain is tough: dusty, with scrabbly brush, lots of sock stickers, and some poison oak (the local club has done a good job removing what they can). There were a few well-designed holes (#1, #3, #14), but in general I was disappointed. In the layout I played, 11 holes were blind, 5 were partially obscured, and 2 were clearly visible. Many of the holes lacked a clear route. High potential for lost discs.

Other Thoughts:

Other layouts (pin positions) may lead to a substantially different experience. I only saw what is likely a particularly challenging layout.

Nice Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 25, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Fun and challenging course with a good variation of short and long range basket positions. Holes have rubber tee pads with alternate pin locations (three positions per basket which are frequently changed). Clear signage makes navigating the course fairly easy. The parking lot is large and can easily accommodate 200 vehicles. There are restrooms facilities available and located near the picnic area. Not overly crowded and the locals are very friendly and helpful.

Cons:

There are several blind pin locations due to some heavy wooded areas which make for a very tuff shot (Back nine). If you play this course enough "You will loose discs". Beware of Poison Oak. There are a few poison oak bushes on the course (especially the back nine) that will eat your discs. The course is very flat with no elevation changes.
Parking is not free. There is a parking fee of $6 for a day pass/$80 for a yearly pass.

Other Thoughts:

Very well designed and technical 18 hole course. The local disc club, SVDGC does a great job maintaining this course as well as the other two 9-hole courses in San Jose (Hellyer & La Raza).

Solid Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 10, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great variety of throws needed to get to the basket. Lots of long (300-500') holes. Not crowded (during a week day, anyway). Has two of the best 9 holes I've played nearby (Hellyer and Raza).

Cons:

No elevation changes.
HOT HOT HOT. Holy hell, this one's going to be miserable during summer. Very little shade, and this area gets into the mid-high 90s often, sometimes breaking 100. You're basically walking around an orchard, so I'm expecting to be covered in sweat and dust.
There were a few giant poison oak bushes that aren't far off desired flight paths that would make me leave a disc behind if it made it's way into one.
A couple holes with blind spots that you're shooting for where finding your disc can be tough even if you make the shot you were trying to throw.
Parking's $6.
No bathrooms... mainly wish there was a faucet for rinsing hands off, especially if I hit some of the poison oak.

Other Thoughts:

Really like the course layout and the way each individual hole is setup. If there was a way to take this exact design -- trees, bushes, and all -- and put it on more hilly terrain with some bigger trees to provide shade, it'd be a really great 18 hole. As is, it's still fun and it's good to have an alternative to Hellyer and Raza.
