***A lot of these reviews are pretty outdated. There is an 18 hole layout, and there is also a way to play it where you combine every other hole (tee 1 to pin 2, tee 3 to pin 4 etc). There is only one basket per hole, making 18 in total (some earlier reviews indicate two baskets per hole).***

Pros:
*Great use of trees as obstacles on the majority of holes. There really aren't any holes that or so totally wide open that you don't have to think about your shot shape due to trees. Even though there is really only one hole that I would consider to be truly a "wooded" hole (hole 8), every single hole has trees to contend with at least to some degree (with the possible exceptions of 2 and 17, the island hole). I find wide open bomber holes dreadfully boring, so I really appreciate this.

*Good mix of holes that favor righties vs lefties. I think most courses tend to favor righties, but this one has numerous holes that are going to favor lefties.

*Most holes are not super long, but even the shorter ones are challenging because of all the trees. 11 and 16 are both pretty long, but not impossible to par for an average player.

*The rough on most holes is not that bad. There are a few holes where if you go off the fairway, good luck scrambling for a par (hole 7 is like this), but on most holes the underbrush the undergrowth is sufficiently thin that you can usually find a way to scramble to save a par if you go off the fairway.

*It's almost never crowded. I've had to wait on / contend with ball golfers, but in close to 20 rounds played I have not had to wait in disc golfers one single time. Madison has popular city / county courses that require annual passes, so I think the $5 per round at NS really does keep a lot of people away, which works well for me!

*I personally don't really like playing courses with water hazards. At NS you have the potential to go into some water on over half of the holes. So bring your disc retriever! Through much of the season the riverbeds are essentially dry, but after a good amount of rain in the area, they fill up and they're not big, so the water moves swiftly.

*There is goose crap everywhere, and it can get especially bad on holes 7, 14 and 15. But that's not really the fault of anyone, just a hazard of playing the course.

*This is either a pro or a con, depending on how you think of it, but this course can be TOUGH!!! I have yet to par it. There are just so few birdie opportunities. I've birdied 1, 3, 4, 10, 15 and 17. I think I will eventually birdie 5, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, but birdieing 2, 6, 11, 12, 16 and 18 seems next to impossible for a mere mortal like me. I frequently have an entire round without a single birdie, and there are numerous holes where even a par feels like an accomplishment (like 11).

*Personally I think that hole 11 should be a par 4. Arguably holes 2 and 16 as well, but definitely hole 11. It's long and if you hit an early tree, your ability to end up at 3 is essentially nil.

*The tee pads could definitely be bigger on a lot of the holes. Most are pretty small. On some holes it doesn't matter because I do a standstill drive, but on plenty of them I really wish I had a few more feet for my runup.

Overall, I really like this course. It's kind of a hidden gem, because I feel like it's underutilized in comparison to how good it is. But I'm okay with that, because it means I never have to wait to play.

Overall a solid course that plays alongside a ball golf course. It used to pretty much follow the layout of golf which got super boring but recently was redesigned, making it much more interesting!

-9 hole course turned into 18.

-Good use of elevation

Update: Course has installed tee signs on each hole with distances. There is also a championship level 9 hole to play for some par 4s and 5s. Bumped up the rating to a 4 as it deserves it in my opinion.

-Plays along ball golfers (not usually too busy though)
-Could be hard to navigate if you haven't played the original nine, but follows the ball golf course so simple enough.
-Course could be soggy after a lot of rainfall.
May have to wait for ball golfers from time to time (they are so slow)

Nine springs disc course used to be a long 9 holes following the ball golf course on the property. It has been turned into 18 recently and although they took away the par 4s and 5s, there are some legit technical holes here that give you a fun round still. There are some new wooded holes that give you a challenging fairway and a couple fun elevated baskets along the way. Many of the holes also have water hazards, as there is a big pond in the middle of the property and a nice creek running through some holes. They've installed 18 concrete tee pads. This course usually isn't busy, besides the typical after work rush with ball golfers. Most of the time there is no need for a tee time. The 18 follows the ball golf course and there are a couple areas where the fairways cross but it never really should be a problem. The tee pads also point to the basket on basically every hole. This course would has had a lot of love and work put into it, and is a fun round for any golfer.
All in all, this is another fun 18 hole course in the Madison area and definitely worth a try if you're around. Don't forget the $5 pay to play fee in their nice little pro shop.

+ When I had called the course on Thursday evening to ask if Friday morning would be busy or if I needed a tee time, the employee I was speaking to laughed quietly and was like "Oh no, not at all. Just come on down." The next day, my brother and I were the only people on the course the entire morning, which was ideal. When I talked to the staff there in person, they said that the 9 Springs course has recently been drawing more disc golfers than ball golfers, which I thought was interesting. He said that the plan is to get rubber mats in soon and to expand the course. The reason I list this as the first pro is that this course has tremendous potential. If ownership decides to move towards developing a championship level 18 holes, the land is definitely there for it.

+ Very clean and taken care of. Then again, this is exactly what you'd expect from a ball golf course.

+ A little bit of elevation. #1 and #2 play from an elevated tee pad. The rest of the course is very flat. Water hazards do come into play on holes 1-7, though the chance of losing a disc is pretty slim unless you have a horrendous shank. The fairways are very, very generous and forgiving. This is appropriate because the holes, for the most part, are much longer than a typical disc golf course. It allows you to really air out drives, which is one of the big pros of this course. It's a course where distance will definitely help your score. It's something you should know going into this round.

+ Staff here is awesome. We were approached by multiple people (makes sense since we were the only ones) to make sure we were having a good time.

+ Being able to rent a cart for $15 provides an opportunity for something you usually won't have at a DG course.

+ Three tees (red, white, blue) with two basket locations (only one basket at a time). While the shorts are still relatively long, it does add a little bit of variability for the different skill levels.

- Not as many trees as you'd hope for. I'd say that this course, for the majority of holes, reward distance over accuracy. This is pretty unusual for disc golf, but does provide a nice change of pace.

- It should be noted that this course holds water very easily. After a rain, it's going to be wet. The fairways will be flooded.

- While the baskets were great, this course could really use tee signs for the holes as well as the rubber mats. The natural isn't as ideal for disc golf.

At the time of writing, this course costs $5 for an all day pass per person. This is cheaper than $5 for 9 holes which it appears it started out as. It makes it much more reasonable and justifiable. I'm okay with Pay2Play on private land, but ardently against it for public parks, which is what Madison's done with their other 18 holes courses.

All in all, if you want a manicured course where you can air it out, this is for you. Distance is the main obstacle here. Definitely bring your drivers!

Wide open course with some trees to still add some obstacles. It cost $5 but I was told today that I could play it twice for that $5 if I so chose.

If you are a newbie there are some water hazards so be aware of that. I had to fish one disc out of one, but luckily a stick was nearby.

Just a nice overall course. I liked how open the holes were. Its decently flat for the most part so it is an easy walk.

This course is set up on a public golf course in Fitchburg, which is a suburb of Madison. The baskets are DISCatchers that are all new and are in great shape. The flow of the course is very easy to follow. They also provide an awesome course map in the clubhouse with a scorecard and all OB on it. Probably the best I've ever seen. Since this is on an actual ball golf course the course itself is in unbelievable shape. The course is mostly wide open but has quite a few trees and water hazards to contend with. There are dual tee and pin positions on every hole I believe. Dual tee pads, reds are the shorts and blues are the longs which adds quite a different variety in shot variation. You can even rent golf carts which I've only ever seen elsewhere at highbridge.

You have to share the course with actual ball golfers, which is what the course is for, but that is a much slower game so it may take longer than usual to play a round. $5 for 9 holes or $8 for 18 is steep as can be. To be fair though the $5 for 9 holes is totally worth it. I've never played on an actual ball golf course before but this is a fun round.

I was very surprised with how much fun I had here. This is the first time I've ever actually played on a ball golf course. This really is a fun course...seriously. It's mostly open grip it and rip it but for my weak arm even I had fun. Pricey but totally worth it. If you've never played anything in Madison this shouldn't be your first choice but is fun nonetheless.

9 hole course situated on a public 9 hole ball golf course, in Fitchburg, WI (a suburb of Madison)

Brand new Discatcher baskets, all in great shape and mounted nicely. Two pin positions per hole. From what we could gather, the extra pins changed each hole considerably, either from a distance perspective, or a shot perspective.

Natural tees, but these are ball golf natural tees, so they're finely manicured grass. Flat, level, ample...and not worn out, as there doesn't seem to be a ton of traffic here. As far as grass tees go, these are obviously as good as you're going to find. There are also 3 tee positions per hole. Most of them simply add distance, but several do slightly change the outlook of the hole.

Lots of distance here. If you like to grip and rip, you're in luck on several holes here.

Some nice water features on the course. There's a large pond on hole 5's blue tee, which is about a 300' water carry, depending on where you're aiming.

Nice scorecard provided at the pro shop. Distances all laid out (they're not on the actual course) for all tees/basket positions. Navigation on the course is very easy.

You can rent golf carts!

Some nice, tricky pin positions. A couple holes have water in play around the basket, and most holes have some sorts of obstacles to navigate. For a golf course, they did a REALLY good job of making something out of nothing in some cases.

Pay to play. $5/rd ($8/two rounds) is pretty steep. With all the P2P in the area, it might not seem so bad, but $5 for nine holes is a lot, IMO. Luckily, the course is pretty fun.

Not much elevation here. It's all pretty flat, save for hole 2.

It's kind of right in the middle of town, and hole 2 has a busy road right next to the tee.

This was my first time playing disc golf on a ball golf course, and I was pleasantly surprised. We assumed this would be a throwaway course on a day of bagging, but it turned out to be quite fun. Plenty of fun shots to be had, and there's something to be said for being able to grip and rip once in a while.

While it's a bit pricey, it's a fun little 9, and I'd definitely tell people to give a try if they're in the area!
