Sad Shape

Reviewed: Played on:May 6, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

I'm trying to think positively. I had the course all to myself on a beautiful May morning. And there were 20 holes. And I didn't lose any discs. At least with the yellow bands on the holes, I could see where the baskets were. When I pulled in and saw the baskets for the back nine out in the field, my heart sank because I thought it was going to be dumb back and forth across the field, but the holes all played in the transition between field and trees: from field into tree & from trees into field, so were more interesting.

Cons:

As I said, it was in sad shape. I don't think it's seen any maintenance since the 2017 review. There was no kiosk or map, so I was playing it blind. There were tee "areas." The carpet was torn up in a lot of cases, so threw from beside the tee. The tee signs were so faded as to be useless. The course has seen so little traffic lately that there wasn't a burned-in walking route. The grass was cut out on the field, but not so in the woods. I ran into a total dead end at hole 8. Huge fallen tree blocking the way and ankle-deep swamp on either side. After 10 minutes, I gave up and was going on to 10 when I saw a tee post off to the side. The holes in the back 9 were hillier and more interesting, but figuring out where to go was often a challenge.

Other Thoughts:

A caving friend of mine says "Every cave is worth visiting - once" I won't make the drive from Huntsville for this one again.

Short, but full of woodsy goodness 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 24, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Well-kept, and accurately signed (unlike Warrior Ridge). Plenty of technical woods work. Front is essentially flat, while the back has more elevation. Distances vary from putt-putt to slightly over 300' (14 is longer, but is so hard downhill that it basically isn't), and the mixture of shot shapes is solid. The rough strikes a nice balance between too forgiving and too penal, though it may lean a bit more forgiving in winter.

People say golf is a good walk spoiled, and here it is, at the very least, a beautiful walk; the exercise of spoiling it is left to the reader. The park is beautiful throughout, and this is the prettiest of the three courses.

Cons:

The supernumerary holes are out of character compared to the rest of the course: extremely short and uncomfortably close to pinball. The baskets are also Mach Vs that blend in astonishingly well, unlike the yellow-banded Discatchers on the numbered holes, which happen to be the old single chain style - still very playable, but potentially jarring to unsuspecting players with a forceful putt.

Hole 10 (throwing 338' across an open field, mild bend right around a treeline) is also a bit of a break of continuity, but it does kinda provide an excuse to throw a driver while covering up the fact that 1-9 and 11+ are essentially completely separated by what would be a long hot walk.

Other Thoughts:

This course mostly rewards good control of mids and putters, but most players will still want to drag at least a fairway driver along as well for the longer holes.

There is a creek intermittently in play on one hole, but I can't recall which.

ICYMI, there are two other courses on site. Warrior Ridge is the best challenge (but has misleading tee signage), while Chickasaw is the best overall, and Tushka is... worth throwing while you're here.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

State Park with three courses, an all day disc golf fest. Lots of holes that reward good shots and yields a lot birdies. Holes that punish you for errant shots and takes back those bridies with bogeys or worse. Good mixture of holes and and a natural habitat with Bear Creek nearby. One of my favorites.

Cons:

I am not a distance player but even I throw only two drivers on this course, #15 uphill and #10. Mostly putters and some mids. Course seems to favor a lefty BH or a good RH flick. Course can be swampy in rainy weather. BTW you pay to enter the park $3.

one of my favorites 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 24, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Moderately short holes--opportunity for numerous birdies. Wonderful landscape. Carpet tee pads. Signs pointing directions to next tee box.

Cons:

Avoid this course if it has rained the day before.

Other Thoughts:

This course is the best of the 3 located in the state park. This is a very family friendly course.

Tight!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 26, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Beautiful scenary
- Great disc golf destination
- Very challenging
- Well marked directions
- Easy walk

Cons:

- Too technical
- No real clear fairways

Other Thoughts:

I thought i would really dislike the carpet teepads but after throwing on them i actually liked them. I had been playing much better disc golf (compared to what i'm used to which isnt much) but i was completely humbled after playing on this course. Don't even take your drivers to this course all you will need are you putters and midrange.

Scenic course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 26, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course generally runs through wooded areas which give you some real nice scenery. The tee boxes aren't spaced out so far that require alot of extra walking. Holes have a great mixture of shots so it's not monotonous like you're playing the same holes over and over again.

Cons:

Some tee boxes are not marked that well and there's no bathrooms nearby.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I would recommend playing this course to anyone. This park also has 2 other courses so you can play to your heart's content. Don't forget to bring your camera!!

ch-ch-ch-ch-chikasaw! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 15, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

First of all, FANTASTIC park to spend a day. Chickasaw trail is the older of the two courses. That said, it is full of varied shots...some long...some short. Its hard to lose discs here, and very easy to get lost in the natural beauty.

Cons:

Can get a bit muddy after rain. Can also be a bit buggy in the summer. Thats really the worst I can say about it. I love this course!

Other Thoughts:

A definite play. Any skill level will enjoy this course to the fullest. GO PLAY!!!!

Great SP Course off the Trace! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 31, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Along with Warrior Ridge and Tushka, Tishomingo SP provides 56 holes of disc golf in one park.

Well-designed course, scenic, mostly in woods, but also some open shots and a couple of holes up and down a decent sized hill. Few holes run along a creek, which adds to the scenery but should not be a factor to your disc.

Excellent signs. 20 holes. Good flow. Easy to navigate.

#17 is a nice ace run down the hill, of which I had the privilege of witnessing an ace by my playing partner!!

Park office has scorecards and discs. They also rent discs for a few dollars if you are new to disc golf or forgot yours.

The entrance is off of Natchez Trace Parkway, making for a nice drive getting to the course.

Cons:

No restrooms near this course.

Most of the holes are short for seasoned disc golfers who like to air it out.

Other Thoughts:

This is fun course, though not terribly long. I am a seasoned DGer and enjoyed it and would come back again. Would also be a great course for the whole family, especially convenient in a state park where there are many other activities available.

I stayed in a cabin on site and played disc golf all day. What more could you ask for?

$3 a day to enter the park, but you can play both courses on site as many times as you want.

I would rate this course 1st out of the 3 in this park. None of the 3 are top 10 courses, but when you consider there are 3 courses in one park, Tishomingo makes for a nice disc golf destination.

Fun times in the woods 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 18, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Plenty of shade if it's the summertime. A few chances to get back to the car pretty easily while playing the course if you left something behind. well kept fairways make it easier to get your disc down to the basket. No chances to lose a disc in water unless you REALLY REALLY mess up when you are near Bear Creek. Speaking of which can also be considered a plus if it's summertime. Jump in and get cooled off.

Cons:

A few of the holes play a little to close to the next teebox. In fact one of the holes gets so close to the next tee if you are sitting on the bench you have to get up to move to make sure someone doesnt hit you on their appoarch/putt shot.

Other Thoughts:

If you are in the area you really should check out this course. It's a really fun one and should not be overlooked when in the area.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 18, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has a decent mixture, with mostly short, tight technical shots, with just a few holes varying to offer a different shot selection. There are 4 longer tees and 9 of the holes have alternate pins. These changes add a little more mixture/length, but do not drastically change the basic premise of the course.

This can be a fun little course to play, particularly for newer players or seasoned players who can not throw very far. The course does loop back to the front after hole 9. Like most state parks, camping is available, as well as bunk houses and cabins. There are good tee signs on every hole and navigation once you get started is pretty straight forward. Each tee has been upgraded with good carpet pads, that seem to work good in all condions.

Cons:

This course has the older, single chain baskets. There are a few benches, but the course could use more of them.

Being in a MS state park, it cost $3 to enter (most locals buy a year pass for $42, which is good for all MS state parks). Once you enter the park, this course is in the very back, which feels like a 10 minute drive down that old park road.

Other Thoughts:

This is a 20 hole course, with A and B being squeezed in between holes 6 and 7, so be sure to look for the extra tees. I personally enjoy playing the course, but at the same time wish more had been done with the design. The potential is there for an awesome course, but as it stands, just another pitch and putt course in northeast MS. Blue Level pros would be expected to shoot in the 8-12 down range in most set ups. Hole 7 in the long pin would be a legit par 4 shot and hole 14 from the long tee is probably the best shot on the course, being we don't have a lot of mountain type shots in this area.

Great Tish Course!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

Excellent terrain and mix of hole types. Love the holes up/down the side of the huge hills. Rock outcroppings are really cool. New course there and it is sweet too!

Cons:

Natural tees, little slick in bad weather.

Other Thoughts:

Great course with a sister course in the park and another just a few minutes up the round this could be one of N. Miss major disc golf destinations.
