Great Confidence Builder 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 14, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Only one basket over 300 feet.
Good for beginners
Next to a rec center with big restrooms
Good place to get an ace
Great for kids to learn on
Hard to lose your disc
Signage is good

Cons:

Only one basket over 300 feet.
Difficult to find as the Freestone Park area is huge
Gravel course

Other Thoughts:

I was visiting the Phoenix area and my GF wanted to go to Ikea and shop, so she dropped me off to play while she did her thing. The course is super easy to navigate with good and accurate signage. The entire course is visible from most holes. It is short and not very challenging, but a great confidence builder and practice course. It would be a good place to introduce newbies or kids to the sport as the distances are not too vaunting.

Wait, so it's not actually in Freestone Park!? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 16, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cement Teepads, Good Baskets, Good Signs

Cons:

Completely flat, open desert landscape. It doesn't get much more bland than this.

Other Thoughts:

As I pull up to the BEAUTIFUL Freestone Park in Gilbert, I was excited to try and find hole one. If you haven't been to the park itself, it has beautiful grass rolling hills, could be great for an awesome course. However, the actual disc golf course is across the street at the church where it is completely flat desert landscape. I won't be back.

Wide open practise course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 4, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

6 holes under 220 ft, longest hole 367. Wide open easy course for practise. Concrete tees are nice, good baskets, loaner discs apparently available. If you don't have an ace yet, play here until you do...LOL

Cons:

Almost zero challenge.

Other Thoughts:

Uncrowded park course. 7 holes wide open desert wash, last 2 holes near the building are nicely landscaped and although short are very creative. Great beginners, practise, or ego stroking 9 hole course.

Very Polite Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

I don't need to write a review because previous reviewer, Sunday Mike, stated everything I was going to say and he probably stated it all more eloquently than I would would have.

But to confirm what he already wrote. The Freestone Recreation Center is a lovely facility with a friendly staff. They have loaner discs and maps available. You don't need maps once you locate the first tee. There is a course rules sign at the beginning. The tee signs are nice colored, metal ones with hole #, par, map, next tee and distance. The concrete tee pads are just right. The baskets are very pretty, orange, DGA Mach V's with the red # on top. There is also a next tee marker on the ground pointing to the next tee. They're really not necessary on this course. As Sunday Mike stated, holes 1-7 are fairly short, open, boring ACE runs played over dirt. No thrill here.

But I liked 8 and 9, too. Although short, they were both interesting and fun. # 8 is a 215' hyser where you to have to throw around some tree branches. What's fun about this hole is 1) the basket is just barely visible from the tee and 2) the area around the basket slopes off kinda quickly.

# 9 is another short (212') hole off the pad but you have to thread your shot between two trees to a pretty little natural green area. It's definitely not a difficult throw but it's a fun little ACE run.

And now, one charming little detail that Sunday Mike failed to mention! As you finish # 9, you're greeted by a sign Thanking you for playing and reminding you to return your loaner discs to the rec center. Now when have you seen a sign thanking you for playing their free course?

Cons:

Playing on dirt.
First seven holes are basically just wide, open straight ACE runs.
Only # 4 at 334' stretches more than 261'.

Other Thoughts:

Great signs and baskets, nice pads and the last two holes saved this course for me. This course could benefit from a couple of nice man made obstacles installed on a couple of the open holes. Not some junky looking crap recycled from somewhere but something decent looking. Like maybe, burying 3-4 poles of various lengths in front of one of those baskets. Something to add to the challenge and change things up a bit!

New in Gilbert! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has great baskets, excellent level pads, informative signs, accurate directional markers and two fairly interesting holes ( 8 & 9).

Cons:

This course is wide open and extremely short. Only one hole is over 300'. Most holes are less then 250'.
Holes 1-5 & 7 are just short little tosses over a wide open dirt field. Hole 6 is nearly widen open, but a large mesquite tree blocks the straight hyzer route.

Other Thoughts:

The Freestone Recreational Center is an outstanding facility. If you need a map they are available at the front desk. Kudos to Rec Center for installing this course in the first place, but they really didn't have a lot to work with.
The first 7 holes are fairly boring, short shots and they crisscross a field, but holes 8 & 9 are in the green belt right next to the Center. Both are short, but are each interesting in its own way. 9 curls around some trees into a very small landing area surrounded by OB on three sides. Hole 8 has a tree and OB protecting the anhyzer drive and the basket is positioned on an incline which could cause trouble if your disc caught an edge.
Overall Freestone Park is an impressive looking facility but the disc golf is much to easy. I'm glad it exists and I was impressed with the signs, baskets, pads and markers, but I was hoping for more.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 21, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course was opened on March 15th, 2015. The Concrete tee pads are flawless and the Brand New DGA Mach V baskets make it even better. This is a wide open course, for the most part, but a Great course to practice, Mid Range/Upshots on. Still, a great use of of available space.

****Update 9/30/2018. There is a Saturday morning League group that gets together around 7AM and has createda Safari layout to make this short, flat course more intersting.

Cons:

Only one hole over 300 feet. Most holes are under 250 feet. Very little elevation change.

Other Thoughts:

For what it is, this is an Awesome little course. Please Understand it is nothing more than a 9 hole Rec/Beginner course. I bring my Kids here, often. They like this course because they can actually make Par on most of it. The tee pads and baskets are Awesome. The short distance of the course is slightly offset by the constant wind. For what it is, this is a Great little course.!
