VQ, you've really let yourself go 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 4, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Multiple tee pads that are turf. Those are my personal favorite.
Nice course design and layout. Arroyo baskets - this is course #280 over 32 states. First time playing on these baskets.

Cons:

After my round I was talking with some locals over at BRP. They agreed, the owner has really let this course go. I correlated it to someone buying a brand new Lexus and then never bothered to change the oil. If the car was maintained it would have reached 300,000 miles easily, but since they didn't do something as simple as change the oil, the engine blew up at 50,000 miles. Here are the problems:

1. While the tee pads are turf, the red pads (middle length) had multiple rotten wood underneath making for an uneven pad.

2. Some of the grass in the fairways - not off the fairways mind you but the actual fairways - was to my knees. I'm 5'11". At least it didn't have sticky burrs.

3. In a lot of areas, it just simply looked dumpy. See next few points.

4. If you look at Hole 5 tee picture here on dgscene, it looks like a really cool platform. Instead, it was very wobbiy. It needs to be torn down before it collapses and someone gets hurt.

5. Hole 14 tee picture posted in this dgscene course listing, it looks pristine. In reality, the path is gone and the area to the right of where the path used to be is now a dump site for sawdust from some sort of mill that is also on site.

6. Hole 17, the 'green' is gone. No mulch, not retaining ring, nothing.

7. Hole 18 is a mess. The floating dock to the tee pad is in disrepair. The left side of it is under water. The right side has a retaining post missing so it is pretty wobbiy. The floating tee pad is listing (tilting) at an angle to the starboard (right). Unlike the pictures posted here, there is overgrowth all around the pond that needs to be cleared out.

8. The club house was empty. The soda pop machine was not working. This was on a Friday when the green fee was $10 vs. $5.

9. There are plenty of outhouses all around the property. The one I used was literally full with fluid.

10. The camping area looks deserted. Signs are broken, stuff is in disrepair. There is no way I would pay money to camp here.

Other Thoughts:

I want my $10 back. If BRP costs $8 to play, the green fees here should be $1 only because it is private property.

From the pictures, this course was at one time a 4.5. I walked away shaking my head as to why someone would put this much money into a piece of property to just let it go like they have. Normally i would give it a 3.0 based on just the course as is, but since I had to pay $10 to play this, I think a 2.5 is generous.

Pros:

I've never pulled up to a course, and had such a wow factor as soon as I arrived! The place looks like you're on a set of the movie waterworld. The land looks immaculate and the water and water fountains look incredible. I can almost guarantee the first thing you say when you get here is wow. The course itself has amazing tee pads, they have the short blue, then red, and then black. Very nice tee signs with a lot of signature holes. Hole 3/14/15/18 our all very iconic. A lot of par 4s that you can get the birdie but very high risk high reward type of course. Red baskets that our very visible from the tee box with flags on most. Pro shop on sight that has lightning disc with vision quest stamp for only 7 dollars. Also a mini corn hole inside the pro shop trailer/ along with scorecards and map. Beautiful vision quest sign and kiosk. Clearly marked out white stake ob lines. Course navigation is fairly simple. Friendly staff

Cons:

Water water water it's very beautiful but can actually feel a little repetitive. Good luck not throwing at least one in the drink. Holes 6-12 our kind of boring seem kind of just thrown in and not as well upkept.
Goose poop everywhere!!! Specially on the island hole you're going to be standing, and throwing in it.
10 dollars to play one of the higher pay to plays.

Other Thoughts:

There's a random penis statue on the course haha I guess to remind you you're going to lose or throw in the water. All in all it's a great course, but I feel it just dosen't quite hit that 5 star to me. I did get a massive skip shot off the water on 3 and cool to see. I will say from a visual standpoint one of the best courses ever however the playability just dosen't hit the 5 star mark

Quest for fun is successful! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 20, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Course upkeep is superb! Turf tee pads are plenty large and very grippy even in wet conditions. I'm becoming more a fan of these compared to concrete. Wood chips on the greens provide consistent landing zones throughout and helps you to spot the basket from the tee. Baskets were in great shape.

- Good tee signs: Hole layouts and distances were accurate and both the red and black tees had signs at every hole. #13 sign was lying on the ground next to the red pad.

-Hole Variety: Wide variety of distances from the red tees with several par 4 holes. Most holes gave you at least two routes to the pin, with the only exceptions being #2 and 3. Even so, all shot shapes are required if you want to avoid a blow-up hole after a drive goes awry.

-Risk/Reward: Here is where VisionQuest excels. Hole 3 is a great example of this with the prudent shot being a lay-up short of the pond but a tempting narrow route down the left side. Hole 9 as well with its the basket begging to be run at but OB just past the steep drop-off behind the basket. Just about every hole presents you with a risk/reward decision.

Cons:

-Lack of elevation change: As others have noted, there are no real elevation changes on the course. This isn't a huge con, but prevents it from being classified with the best courses.

-You will lose a disc or two in the water if you play a few rounds here. My group of 6 rec/intermediate players lost 10 over 36 holes. They maintain a large lost and found but that didn't help us as we were 9 hours from home.

Other Thoughts:

It was obvious no one was expecting us when we pulled in on a September day with a forecast of rain and more rain. There was a dry erase board with a phone number, which we called and someone met us less than 5 minutes later to open the pro shop. Both people we met were extremely friendly and certainly made us feel right at home. There were carts ready to go which we didn't really need but they definitely provided a welcome break from the rain in between throws. The course is a lot of fun to play which is why we made the decision on the fly to play a second round there. I don't know if this is a common occurrence, but as we were playing number 2 a huge pot-bellied pig came wandering around a stand of trees and headed up the road. I really like hole 16 with its pin tucked in the pines. There is just something pleasant about the aesthetic both from the tee and on the green. $10 to play is fair and I would definitely play it again when I'm back in the area. If you're on the fence, come give it a play!

Reviewed: Played on:May 25, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is located only a couple miles from blue ribbon pines which can make for an awesome day of disc golf. The course is 18 holes. The first 13 holes are moderately wooded and flat. The last 5 open up but that's where the water comes into play. The flow is very intuitive and easy to follow. There are 3 sets of tees on every hole which is always nice to see. The blues are shorts and are very short. The reds are the mids and add a lot more distance than the blues. Finally the blacks are the longs and add a little to quite a bit more distance and some different angles. The tees are all artificial turf and were all in fine shape. The baskets are red powder coated Arroyo Vortex's. This is the first time I've played on these and they're pretty nice. I did have a beautiful 40 plus foot shot that hit perfect get spit right out. I don't know if it was the inner crossed chains that caused this, but I was stunned that shot didn't stick. Other than that I liked the baskets. The tee signs are fantastic. They show a nice layout of the hole, par and distances. Very well done here. There are wood chips around pretty much every pin too which is pretty awesome. The course is permanent which I always love to see. Middle of nowhere kind of feel to it so it's a very peaceful vibe here. They have golf carts you can rent to which is cool. There is a nice mix of different shots required here. Left, right, tunnel. The water makes you triple think your approach on a number of holes. Really well done with this. The OB is explained in great detail on the map/scorecards provided with fair drop zones. All around a really awesome set up here. A lot of work has gone into making this a top notch course and it shows.

Cons:

$10 per person isn't out of hand for a course like this, but with BRP only being $8 and a few minutes away and being better it is a bit steep. I don't know what happened to all the rakes by the ponds to retrieve discs. We had a couple go in on 15 on the peninsula and there were no rakes to retrieve them. These would be nice to have here. Not necessarily a con but just something odd I'd never seen before but on the red tees there were 4 or 5 par 3.5's. This just seemed strange. Again not a con to the course but how do you score that. Kinda weird that's all.

Other Thoughts:

With this and BRP being so close you'd be hard pressed to find a better day of disc golf. Definitely worth playing if you're anywhere near here. I personally prefer BRP to this but this is still an awesome course. Also on our second round we played holes 3 through 18 with the only other 2 out there on a Wednesday. They were nice enough. Tried to eat our bags a couple times but otherwise very friendly. Never played a round with a couple pygmy goats before but it was pretty hilarious. They followed us around like dogs do.

Definitely worth playing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Let me start by saying I have only played from the black tees.

The staff was extremely kind and inviting, and as travelers made us feel very welcome.

The course is beautiful and manicured, with man made water hazards, very well done engraved benches at each holes, mulched greens surrounding almost every basket, made mad tees, peninsulas, and mounds to add to the flavor of the course. It has a small pro shop that I believe they have intentions of upgrading, with all sorts of gear and plastic for sale, as well as golf carts to rent.

The course offers a lot of variety in shots, some very exciting and challenging holes, and most of all holes that feel very satisfying to play well. Between well guarded bunker holes, elevated baskets with OB looming behind, more than one peninsula/island landing zone you have to stick, baskets guarded by a grove of pine trees, and the mound shot, this is a course that gives you cause for celebration is you can pull off a great drive.

It definitely shows that the people who built the course are trying their best to create an incredibly unique disc golf experience, which was tons of fun to play, and is very exciting to see popping up.

Cons:

Unless you play small-ball the entire time, there is a solid chance at least one of your discs is going in the water. The people in charge are very good about retrieving discs and contacting people, but this doesn't do a ton for you when you're just traveling through. The water shots are awesome, but I would definitely recommend bringing some extra plastic with you.

There are a couple of holes that can feel a little gimmicky. The OB drop-off basket and the mound shot come to mind mostly. They're not bad holes, but a couple feet can definitely make the difference between them going really well and going really poorly. Definitely satisfying to pull off well, but they can also leave you looking at a bogey even with playing good golf.

The teepad on the dock felt a little odd. I had no trouble getting some good launches off of it, and enjoyed the novelty of it, but it was definitely a little awkward feeling at first.

Other Thoughts:

All in all this course does have quite a bit of novelty over just really great golf, but I think it's a good mix that makes the course a special place. Everyone there seemed like great people, and it's great to see someone putting so much time and effort into creating something so special for the world of disc golf.

It feels like someone set out to create a disc golf amusement park, and that's exactly what they did. It's extremely fun, extremely well maintained, and extremely entertaining, but I don't think it's the highest caliber disc golf course in the world. It's an awesome place that I would stop and play anytime I'm traveling through, but I don't think it's somewhere I would play very consistently if I lived in the area. Definitely worth playing at least once though, it's one of a kind.

Amazing course, surreal experience 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 5, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Fantastic signage
-Fantastic baskets
-Good length, with a mix of some shorter more technical holes as well
-Lose a disc in the water? No big deal, take a paddle board out there and get it back! Or wait until they go get it. They'll send a text to let you know they have it waiting for you!
-The Red and the Black teepees are very different and create the feel of almost having two courses.
-The land is incredibly well maintained
-These might be my favorite teepads out there. They maintain them so well in the winter, whereas concrete will often be icy and slippery. They're a good size, too. Plenty of room to make your throw.

Cons:

-I've had a couple discs taken from the shack that were found. They may have changed their policy but at the time they didn't check names for lost & found discs
-At $10 it is twice the cost of BRP, which is down the road, but this is nitpicking because BRP, frankly, should also be $10

Other Thoughts:

This isn't just a great course, it's an amazing experience. Ziplines, paddleboards, fun side games, good leagues, etc! I've never played anything else like it.

VQ 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Vision Quest is a great course, if you are in Minnesota and want to play the top courses come out to VQ and BRP.

Complete with Zip lines, camping, bag toss, fire pits and much more.

I have had 6+ discs returned to me. They are very good about messaging you and letting you know when they have found your discs.

3 Tee boxes for every hole keeps the variety fresh.

Carts available at all times is awesome and reasonably priced

Cons:

The only con I can list for the course is that in general it's pretty darn flat. In their defense they do have a some man made structures that they created to keep things interesting but compared to other top level courses that is one thing they lack.

Flat courses is just the nature that is available in MN. Unfortunately with the exception of a few courses and the local ski hills courses-in which those courses you have a lot of distance elevation change but not much for technical holes.

Geographically with what they have to work with they did a great job.

Other Thoughts:

Owners are fun to chat with, club house/semi trailer has a lot of discs for sale and snacks available as well.

A mixed bag... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Upon arrival, you're greeted with all sorts of various things. Zip Lines, a decent sized pond, baskets everywhere. The course is very well maintained and you can tell a lot of hours have been poured into getting this course to where it is today. We had enough time to play a round from the blacks(longest) and the blues(shortest).

Some of the pro's I noted while playing a couple rounds there yesterday.
1. The teepads are really nice, although I could see these being a pain if wet.
2. The land is spectacular. Lots of room to expand if they ever wanted to.
3. The golf carts are a nice touch. Definitely made it easier to get around out there.
4. Lot's of various activities you can play if you need a break between rounds.
5. Makes good use of the water.
6. Outhouses everywhere in case nature calls.
7. Lots of signs everywhere to help get you to the next hole.
8. Some really good and unique holes.

Cons:

1. You don't really need a varying shot selection to get around.
2. The black tee's left little to be desired. With some more work, they could be fun, but for the most part they offered more luck and than skill unless you're a Paul McBeth or Ricky Wysocki.
3. Safety of the floating dock teepad. We didn't play it, but it didn't seem very unsteady.
4. Having multiple teepads per hole is nice, but sometimes the teepads were only separated by about 10 feet and didn't really change anything for the shot.

Other Thoughts:

I'll definitely be back to play it again as I didn't get a chance to play the red layout. This course has huge potential to be a top caliber course, but it needs refinement. I do recommend you stop by and give it a try. I'd be willing to bet that the Blue pads could be a blast to play superclass on.

Pros:

Challenging course, a wide variety of different and interesting holes requiring different shots. Very well maintained course, pads and pins. Very good signage.

Cons:

Relatively pricey. It felt a bit forced, with each hole needing to be special, to the point I kind of wanted a straight up normal DG hole.

Other Thoughts:

There are three great courses in MN, and I think this is third. Bryant Lake and Blue Ribbon are slightly better IMO, but it is close and with time I might change my mind.

Nice course but lacks replay value 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

VQ is a well maintained property with lots of extra "stuff"... I came to play DG though.

There are outhouses and small semi trailer proshop with a tent party area with games etc. Doesnt do much for me personally and BRP has nicer shop/snack shack in middle of course.

Benches on every hole and some trash cans throughout (some overflowing with trash)

Course has solid flow from hole to hole and easy to follow. Teepads are nice turf with good length and signage which looks great.

Cons:

Most of the holes are straight shots and you dont need many discs or unique throws to play VQ. Even the holes which have some "line shaping" required generally are just right turns.
Hole 2 for example ive now 2'd twice out of 3 times playing there with a simple roller and if i had any FH welp' easy.

Even with some built up hills and decks etc the course really lacks elevation of any kind. Even the huge hill which was constructed next to "lake lisa" actually makes the shot flat. You throw from one raised area to another raised area... Seems like a lot of work for an essentially flat ground line from tee to basket lol.

This course doesnt have holes that awe me as a player nor my buddy who has played most of the 100+. The replay value isnt there with all the different teepad areas being similar lines on a slightly shorter or longer distance. Why not use the foliage to the right or left in some cases and force a shot? adding distance or taking it away isn't the only point to different tees.

Ill never understand gold level type teepads being put directly behind a red/blue level. It doesn't feel like there is an established disc golf designer actively involved with how the pars and layout are set up.

The deck like teepads suck. Hate the floating dock. Feels just terrible to throw off of for such a long hole.

Vortex baskets have very heavy chains (some appearing already to have rust spots) and not a fan of them at all. A few putts literally pushed back out of the chains hitting basket on the way down and flipping back out. It was pretty ridiculous. (and dont tell me it was a bad putt....ive played DG a few times now)

This might be one of the most over hyped courses considering the cost of $10 per day too. My buddy said he doesnt care if he ever comes back and would play BRP down the road before VQ anytime. I tend to agree.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice property but the actual disc golf lacks pretty bad. If you're entertained by shiny things and feel like you need a golf cart to play a short 18 hole course to be cool well VQ is for you.

If you come to MN and want to play some fantastic disc golf well im not sure this is best the place. I would prefer more holes with some shorter distances mixed in to force unique shots. Lots of birdie-able holes even with my lame skillset. Compared to actually hard disc golf without the fluff VQ is like a 3 compared to a place such as Hidden Lake. I like DG these days over the fluffy stuff which was cool-- when we first started playing and had no idea what good DG was all about'

Taking It To Another Level (True Rating 4.8) 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 16, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Benches at every hole made out of wood and engraved with the course name and hole number on each bench.
-Garbages all over the place
-Tee pads are made out of mesh-like pad, which after throwing on them in a brisk rain, were proven extremely grippy in bad weather
-Color coded wood chip paths and greens laid all around the course, distinguishing different features of the course.
-Crazy risk-reward shots on a few holes
-awesome peninsula hole
-Great "mound shot" which features a long throw over water to about a 40 ft tall mound with a spiral walkway all the way around and a green at the top consisting of sand to help a disc land and stick on the green if you hit it. Awesome idea that I've never seen done anywhere else.
-In just the one year since this course was started, unbelievable how much work and landscaping has been put into this course.
-disc fetchers for the water all over the place, and being that you throw over plenty of water on this course, having those handy are nice.
-Can rent carts if you wish, but by no means necessary out here.

Cons:

-Not a whole lot of the short, more technical holes.
-Only open to general public on the weekends
-$10 to play which isn't ridiculous considering the money put into this course. You know where you money goes

Other Thoughts:

Altogether this course is taking it to another level of disc golf. Some people may feel there are "gimmicky" holes out here, and honestly I hate when people say that about a course. That gimmick typically adds to the difficulty of a hole, and if your the guy that doesn't know how to play a hole with odd basket locations, it isn't a strike on the course, it's a testament of a flaw in your game. That being said, I also agree that "gimmick" holes don't make a course cool, or fun either. However, the "gimmick" holes out here all have a great purpose and uniqueness that is not only cleverly thought out, but fun and nerve racking all at once when throwing at it. I give this course a true rating of 4.8 because I do feel that missing a true technical portion would satisfy all disc golfer thirst. No matter what, there is no way you can come out here and feel like you wasted your time. It may not be everyone's favorite course leaving, but it definitely will make several people's lists as a favorite. Go here, play it and play it several times. Its about 5 minutes from blue ribbon pines, making this area unbelievable to come and play two top courses in the world within 5 minutes of each other. I rated it as a 5 because to rate this course a 4.5 would be ridiculous whereas a 5 is much closer to a realistic rating for the course.

They've thought of everything! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 16, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

-The course itself is challenging and varied, yet fair and accessible. There are plenty of tunnel shots, water shots, doglegs in both directions, short technical holes, and long "air-it-out" holes...extreme elevation changes are the only thing missing, and I don't feel like I missed that at all.
-A beautiful, well-maintained piece of land. VQ is as much fun to look at as it is to play.
-Mike, the owner/designer, is a cool guy who does a fantastic job of making you feel welcome at his course
-Proximity to Blue Ribbon Pines (about 10 minutes away) should slot the whole area quite high on any disc golfer's bucket list.
-So many brilliant amenities that disc golfers aren't used to! Golf carts, zip lines, long rakes for disc retrieval in the water, kayaks to take out on the water to look for those really bad water shots...it's honestly hard to finish the round here, since I was enjoying doing all the other stuff so much.
-Other amenities include a well-stocked pro shop, plenty of benches and trash cans, and several bathrooms throughout the course.

Cons:

There is literally nothing that I could possibly think of that could make this place better...and I honestly tried! One thing to point out (not really a con, just something to be aware of), is that some of the holes are specifically designed to bring new elements into disc golf, namely the raised tee pads over the water, and the zip lines. Inherently, these are things that aren't "no-brainer" safe, and it's important to keep your wits about you out here, both for your own personal safety and for the respect for other disc golfers...they might be waiting for you to finish playing around on all the fun equipment, so keep looking behind you.

Other Thoughts:

I'm lucky enough to live in Colorado, where there are plenty of world-class courses...and I never even imagined I'd see a course like this! VQ truly feels like a disc golfer's playground, and Mike has plans to put even more fun options on the property. The fact that this place is so close to BRP makes the area an amazing road trip destination for some challenging and scenic disc golf.

The Country Club Experience 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 22, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is well designed, with modest elevation, but is very well wooded and technical. It may not be the most difficult I've ever faced, but it's fair and has a variety of lengths, shapes and hazards on each hole.

The landscaping is spectacular, with a mesa to mesa hole that has a zip line from tee to green. There are at least 3 man made ponds (called lakes) and one features a fountain and a tee suspended in the middle on a boardwalk.

There seems to be camping on site. The clubhouse is an old semi tractor trailer.

The benches are crafted from fine wood and if you can't see the next tee sign, the numbers are carved into the benches and almost always visible.

Tee pads were constructed from wooden frames and then covered in red or black astroturf to indicate pro or am tees.

There are a variety of other games for campers.

Cons:

Three tee pads have very serious liability issues (but I'm not going to downgrade the course, and I hope they will upgrade it to fix this issue).

While it says 'no diving' it would be easy to fall off the back of the #5 tee. This notion was brought into sharp relief for me when I stepped backwards on #17 to look for a better angle for my shot and fell over 3 feet.

I sprained my arch, my left hip, my left shoulder, and suffered internal organ bruising, a whiplash and migraines. My right hand was also plunged into a deep sticker bush and cut up so severely that it was deeply infected with pustules.

Clearly, some guard rails need to be built. The email contact person did not respond when I informed him about this incident.

Other Thoughts:

My injuries were ignored when I used the contact information. I did not request any compensation for such, but I found it dismissive of a serious liability and safety issue.

A Very Special Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 21, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- BEAUTIFULLY Maintained course.
- Some of the best all-weather teepads I have ever played on.
- Wide variety of holes, each hole feels unique.
- On site pro shop
- Practice basket and driving net

Cons:

- Water holes are very fun, but very unforgiving. For me personally, this is a con only because I don't want to re-buy my discs. We played when the lake was frozen over, and that saved me 3 discs.

Other Thoughts:

This course has a lot of very memorable holes. Hanging baskets, death putts, a teepad in the middle of a pond, driving from one large hill to another, and a ton of other very cool shots.
This private course is very well designed and maintained. A lot of time, effort, and money was put into this course, and it shows. This is definitely one of my favorite courses I have played.
