fun little course

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 20, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

*tight layout, decently challenging for how short it is (I hit all pars, and I consider myself a mediocre player)

*public bathrooms were clean

Cons:

*The tee pads are ridiculously small. Like, so small that I'd prefer that they just weren't there at all. Good luck doing any kind of runup on hole 5.

*the signage could be better. Specifically, after hole 5 it's a bit confusing to find hole 6 (HINT: it's up the hill, in the woods)

*the water from the water fountain was quite hot

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice, compact little nine-holer. There are a bunch of different holes that are very birdieable, but overall the holes are not so short that you'd consider it a pitch n putt. The wooded holes all have pretty ridiculously tight corridors that you need to throw down (or up, in the case of hole 6), with pretty dense underbrush, so they really encourage shot accuracy. Most people will probably do best throwing a floaty putter shot. Hole 8 has an aggressive dogleg right that will challenge people who throw exclusively RHBH. Hole 2 seems like it should be easy, but then you realize that it's a pretty low ceiling that forces you to stay low. Hole 5 is probably gonna be your best chance for an ace / birdie.

I'm not gonna go out of my way to play it again, but if I'm ever on a road trip that puts me in the vicinity, I'd definitely play it again!

Great beginner course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ This is an ideal course to bring a new/beginning player to. It offers a variety of shots: uphill/downhill (4/5), three in the woods(6,7,8), an (incredibly difficult) island green(9), and an elevated basket(8). This is a great variety for a 18-holer, let alone just a 9-holer.

+ For advanced players, it's a very casual round. There are many ace runs and shots where you can get creative. I tried to do a Simon Lizotte hyzer over the trees on #3 and failed miserably.

+ I love the Discatcher baskets.

Cons:

- The tee signs are a bit lacking and the tees are a bit short. I also felt like the course wasn't taken care of very well and was starting to deteriorate even after just two years (things like weeds growing into 6/7s fairways). Maybe the graduating seniors that created this course didn't find someone to take care of their baby?

- Mosquitos were horrendous. To the point where I had to jog for 90% of the time I was there. I swear it was like the annual Wisconsin Mosquito meet-up. I got devoured. Because of this, my beloved Strawberry Mercy is somewhere in the rough on the left side of hole 8 because I was starting to feel light-headed from all the blood those bastards sucked out of me and I gave up looking for it.

- It's not very challenging for advanced players. You should just need a putter and a midrange to shot well here.

Other Thoughts:

While the course definitely takes advantage of the land to create a pretty fun beginner course, there isn't too much of a challenge for experienced players. It's a fun round where each hole offers it's own distinct obstacle.

Short, but fun 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 1, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 hole course set up in a small, multi-use park in Deerfield (just outside Madison).

Discatcher baskets, all in good shape and mounted well. No issues here. One pin position per hole.

Concrete tee pads, one per hole. More on these in cons.

Navigation is a breeze. The course basically plays in a circle, and each hole has a tee sign. If you get lost here, you're either completely wasted, or blind.

Some fun lines to be had here. It's a short course, but several holes offer fun shots. There's some good use of elevation, some tight-ish lines, and some forced shots. For as small a space as this is stuck into, they did a fine job. I especially liked hole 3's tight gap to hit, and hole 5's elevation plus hyzer route.

Cons:

While they have concrete tees here, they are quite slick. Even on a dry day, with new shoes on, I was sliding around a little bit. Fortunately, the holes are mostly short, and you shouldn't need a long run up. Hole 5's tee is especially tough, slanting downhill, and a bit short.

There's just no distance here, if that's that's your game. Hole 5, at 300', plays much shorter being quite downhill.

Other Thoughts:

For the space allotted, this is a pretty nice little park nine hole course. I played it with a putter and mid, and had no issues. Fun lines, beginner friendly, and quick.

Nothing to go out of your way for, but if you're close, spend the 20 minutes it takes to spin it!

2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 5, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is set in a small multiuse park in a small town. the baskets are Discatchers that are brand new and in fantastic shape. There are concrete tee pads on every hole. The flow of the course is easy to follow and starts and ends by the parking lot. There are posts at every hole making the tees easier to spot, not that it's hard anyway. The park probably isn't ever really busy. It's free to play and up year round. Hole 8 is an elevated basket and 9 is an "island" hole. Hole 4 is a decent uphill shot with 5 being a fun downhill shot. A very fun little park course.

Cons:

The tee signs don't have any kind of hole map, distance or par. Just a clear? for some reason plexi glass sign with hole number. As mentioned in the previous review, the "island" hole is just like the 2 Dane county courses in it's design. I like the concept of these type of holes on otherwise water free courses. Like the last review though this is a VERY tiny "island". But it does add some much needed challenge especially on the final hole so I'm not gonna knock it too much here. Just worth mentioning though. The tees are a little on the small side and seemed kind of slick to me. They weren't wet or anything, but I slipped a couple times in dry conditions. I just wish they were brushed over a bit more.

Other Thoughts:

Much better then I expected. It's a well thought out design for a small park. There's nothing here to go out of your way to play, but if you're in the area it's totally worth a round or two. I really had a tough time giving this a 2.5 because the design for the available space was just fantastic and kudos to the kids that designed this. The design is 4 discs if not better. But ultimately the overall rating comes down to comparing it to every other course out there and this is just middle of the pack.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 3, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Nice, mature park with shelter, restrooms, water, and other activities
+ Course flows well, starts and ends by parking lot, and is easy to follow
+ With one notable exception (hole #2), course shouldn't conflict with other park uses
+ Concrete tees (also see "cons")
+ Takes advantage of elevation changes on one side of park
+ Good mix of open and wooded holes
+ Decent mix of hole lengths for rec-level
+ A number of both left-to-right and right-to-left holes
+ #6 & #7 are nice, short technical holes in the woods
+ Elevated basket on #8
+ Nice use of some rocks and logs to line fairways, greens, and paths in the woods, with lots of mulch
+ Island green on #9 can add some fun (also see "cons")

Cons:

- Concrete tees are too short, although advanced players may not need much of a run-up
- No tee signs (yet?), and many tee posts are too close to tee pads.
- Need to trim some tree branches, and thin out a little bit of the rough in the woods
- Lefty-righty balance ends up OK overall (slight favorite to RHBH in my opinion), but all three holes that likely favor LHBH (or RHFH) are consecutive short holes in the woods (#6-8). The more open holes almost all favor RHBH.
- One tee / basket location per hole.
- A few of the baskets seemed a little too wobbly / loose. Perhaps some bolts need to be tightened.

Some (hopefully) constructive criticism hole-by-hole.
#1 -- Trees are too close behind the basket. It may actually make the hole play easier, as they may knock long shots down almost into the basket. Not much you can do at this point without moving basket.
#2 -- Not a huge con if players are paying attention, but the basket is just beyond a paved bike / ped path. Also close to playground and baseball field, but generally shouldn't be an issue except for really, really bad shots. Finally, that light fixture for the path will eventually get hit and break ... it's almost a perfect target for a LHBH or RHFH.
#3 -- Gap through the trees should probably be cleaned out a little more, and also trim some lower branches on tree in front of tee.
#4 -- Would have made the hole more interesting if basket was placed 15-25 feet further up the hill so tree was more in the way ... as is, the tree is almost a target to throw into and knock disc down next to basket.
#5 -- Blind downhill shot could cause problems as normal RHBH hyzers could easily land on hole #1.
#6 -- Perhaps clear out a little more behind the basket, as most missed shots will end up in the rough.
#7 -- Again, clear out a little more around the basket.
#8 -- Can't think of any. :)

#9 -- This is my biggest beef with the course, although players can certainly ignore the island green rules for casual rounds if they want to do so. The island green can be fun, and it is clearly based on ones at the two Dane County courses (Vallarta-Ast #22 and Cap Springs #16). However, this hole is not even close to being fair for the rec-level player the course is otherwise designed for. The distance isn't too bad ... I measured 194 from tee, 110 from drop zone. By comparison, the distances from the short tee and drop zone at the two Dane County island holes are 186/135 and 200/140. There are three big problems, though. The Dane County ones are open, while this hole has big trees that completely block the entire left side of the hole and even infringe a bit on straight shots, with some (currently) smaller trees close on the right side. Second, the green is tiny ... I measured about 25' wide by 30' deep, which is 750 sq. ft. The Dane County islands essentially encompass the 10m (33 ft) putting circle, for a diameter of almost 66', and an area of almost 3400 sq. ft. (more than four times the size of this green). Lastly, while Dane Co uses some large boulders to help hold in sliding / skipping discs off the mulch, this green has some short thin landscape edging that will do very little to hold back a disc. Overall, this green is way too difficult to hit. I'm not a great player by any means, and this hole favors a RHBH hyzer (which is not me), but I threw four or five tee shots with no success, and even my first three drop zone shots missed, with two landing on the green but skipping / sliding out. I noticed some slices in the ground further out that appeared to be meant for landscape edging. I don't know if they planned to make it bigger but ultimately built it smaller, or if those are there to make a change now. Still, even that green would be too small. I'll be curious to see what other reviewers think.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this is a fun little course, and I think rec-to-intermediate players will have a good time. The course was designed by some high-school students, who did an admirable job overall. However, there are some issues where I think they clearly would have benefited from having an experienced designer at least review things before construction. My issues with #9 aside, the elevated basket on #8 and the island green add some drama to the end of the course. Many of the cons in my review may be mitigated as the course gets more play and things get trimmed / cleared out a bit, but others are design flaws that can only be fixed by ripping some things out. All in all, it's worth a play and is a nice addition to the local disc golf scene.
