Park is gorgeous, course is... drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I've been playing this course steadily for the past year, trying to decide if it's a 3.94-star rated course (at time of writing) or closer to a 3-star course. If you go by the park, condition of the equipment, cleanliness, clubs attention to detail only, it's a 5-star course. At times this place is manicured to perfection. A candy wrapper doesn't hit the ground before a club member scoops it up tosses it in the garbage.

For me the course ratings are designed for the COURSE, for the fairways, the tee to the basket. I love nice benches (which are plentiful at Taylor Park) and bucolic scenery. But when i step up onto the tee, what does it present that makes me think, "Yeah, this is going to be righteous. Can't wait to play a second round." And it's here that Taylor misses the mark. To get into the 4's or the rarified 5-star review, the course needs to WOW me. I want holes that I brag about afterwards, design that pushes my ability to the limit. The only holes that jump out at me as being memorable is #12 - Nice little knoll to throw from, and 16.

When it comes to pushing ability, #16 is superb. Gotta throw a tight laser-beam shot up the gut, past a medusa tree to a protected basket. Absolutely zero room for error.

Honorable mention is #11 which makes you sling a disc out over an alligator-filled pond. 100% risk/reward hole.

But that's about it. Most of the holes are either straight, or RHBH hyzer shot. The old shampoo directions - wash, rinse, repeat. Essentially a 4-disc course - putter, midrange, something straight, something stable.

Cons:

The downside to a beautiful course with a walking path running beside 4 holes (9,11, 13, 15) is that you have walkers (most elderly) sloooowly walking on the path. You often find yourself standing on the tee for up to 5 minutes waiting for traffic to clear. That's the perils of a beautiful park with walking patchs.

I didn't see the original incarnation of the course, but think some of the pins were moved. Several tee pads point away from the target. Hole 10 tee points off to the side. If you throw straight off the tee, you yank it into trees. I had to cross the tee at a 45 degree angle to throw down the fairway. #18 is even worse. If the tee is pointing to 12-oclock, the basket is at 2pm.

The hole on the course that needs the most work is #1. I love tight gaps, but when you make the approach to the pin nearly impossible (shaggy brush pushing into the fairway with a low ceiling) you must throw a PERFECT shot to penetrate. All it would take is about 30-minutes of pruning to open it up and make it a far better hole. It would still be challenging, but not ugly.

Other Thoughts:

I've jumped on this course a bit in this review, but i's not a bad course. It's a nice, pleasant park to throw a round or two. But it's no where near a 4.0 rating. With some tweaks it could be a solid 3.5. There's just not enough variety or challenge to score higher.

Very solid 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 19, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Mostly technical shots (from short pads) with some big shots needed for the longer pads. Very forehand friendly especially for water holes. Very easy to navigate.

Cons:

Almost 0% chance of recovering a water disc. Not enough longer pads for tougher shots, however multiple pin placements helps.

Other Thoughts:

Great home course for the locals. Once you have all the holes figured out, it would make for some fun competition.

An Absolute Must Play In The Tampa/Clearwater Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 15, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

My only regret after playing the 18 hole Taylor Park was not meeting and shaking hands with the Taylor Park Disc Golf Club members . The drive to the course starts on th left side of the park and winds around the lake to the very opposite end . I found out later that you can drive past the park and park on the street and cut right over to hole #1 . Taylor Park is the top of the line for park equipment , care and upkeep of their course . The parking lot is big enough to hold a full scale tournament . A large bathroom are sits to the left of the 17 & 18 fairway , close to the parking lot and close to hole 1 , too . A nice shelter when not in use is next to the 18 basket . Trash cans are present around the course area . .Walking towards #1's tee pad , there is a large practice area with 2 putting baskets , bag hangers and benches surrounding it . The #1 hole area is unreal . There is a screen behind the tee pad in case there is an errant throw down 18's fairway . A very good kiosk map greets you with the course map and postings of events , A locked disc return box is here , and a large clock sits above the first tee . WOW . There are 2 good sized cement tee pads per hole , 2-4 pin positions per hole ,and the baskets are basic Chainstars , but have flags on the tops of them .What might catch your eye is the course signage . Not only are they fully informative and give a great picture of the hole , but they are lettered and set in an old English lettering/design . As good as I ever saw . There is a spot on the signage indicating what position the basket is in , and I was told that they change the baskets a lot . They have shoe brushes scattered throughout the course , benches at the holes and the disc bag poles at the pads .They have a bell to ring after the #2 hidden basket position to let the players behind you that the area is clear . The park was very clean and well manicured on the Thursday morning that I played .There is a decent amount of variety to these holes . A few in a woodsy area , most are park style and some with the lake on the left side of the fairway . The course flow is easy to follow . I never pulled my map out of my pocket except to write notes . The course won't wow you with memorable holes , but because of the Taylor Park Club's course care and attention to detail , I felt valued as a player . #1 hole is a great opener . 324' , set in a left corner of the fairway with trees and plants set about in the fairway . the #2 basket is set in a grove of trees . #7 plays to an elevated basket . 9 , 11 , 13 & 15 have a water hazard on the left of the fairway . The wind in the park makes the water even more of a factor . I think after playing 11 , you will see a tee pad ahead , but that is the tee pad for 13 . To get to 12 , you will have to backtrack and walk a slight uphill on a path to your right , and tee off from an elevated position . There are plenty of lefty righty holes and there is a lot of fun factor here . Signature Hole : I liked #1 a lot . You have to control your drive and bend it to avoid all of the obstacles in the fairway to a tight well protected green . #12 was a great one , too , a tunnel shot off the only elevated tee . I played the course in about an hour . A foursome should take this course in about 2 hours .

Cons:

#1 Safety . There are alligators in this lake . The locals talk of them and they are BIG. Use your smarts and don't go into the water to fetch your bad drive . Even be aware if your disc is on land but close to the water . Also , there is a walking path that will come into play on some of the back holes like 9- 17 , and a kids play area around #17's fairway . . Share the park . Anything else would be nitpicking . I know that the course can't expand because it is landlocked and the park likes it sequestered off to the back of it . lack of elevation can't be helped either ( but wish some was here ) .

Other Thoughts:

Reviews and pictures of a course don't always tell the story . This is a great course to play . Scenic , fun , and challenging enough . The course is so well taken care of , it doesn't beat you down and plY is easy on the body . Thank You , Taylor Park Rec , and especially Taylor Park Disc Golf Club for letting me play this course . You set the standard for course care and amenities . My Recommendation : From newbie to casual to traveler to pro . This course , though not the most challenging in the area , is just too nice to pass up . Without going into detail all over again , JUST PLAY IT !!!!

Pros:

Kudos go out to the club and all involved in building and maintaining this course. It was such a pleasure to play. Beautiful park, great signage, lots of niceties like bag racks on most holes, garbage cans and even little brooms. Every hole has multiple pads and pin positions (pin positions were always marked at the tee). It was so nice to see people of all ages abilities coming out to play the course the day we were there. You guys deserve a lot of praise for this course!

Cons:

-We played during the week, such a beautiful park I can only imagine it must get pretty busy there.
-Watch out for alligators, we met one!

Other Thoughts:

All clubs should strive for this level of courses and land stewardship! Fun for everyone, not just pros. Will go a long way to grow the sport...

Fantastic Course - Beautiful Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 13, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has a great layout and very challenging on each hole. Potential water hazards on a few holes which gives players chances to think strategy before each shot. A mixture of shorts and long holes very well thought out. I would recommended to anyone looking to have a great day on the course with beautiful views.

Cons:

One thing I would look into is new baskets. The older Chainstar baskets are still in good shape but the pop is just not there. Other than that don't change a thing.

Pros:

Decent but Not Overwhelming Challenge

Good Layout

Fair Amount of Shade

Cons:

Could be Better Maintained
Private Property Near First Few Holes
Other Players*

*Oddly, the "few ground rules" for posting reviews prohibits listing all relevant cons. It may not be fair to judge the merits of the course on the behavior of it's players, but the regularity with which you are likely to encounter certain types of players and behaviors will likely negatively influence your experience at this otherwise excellent course.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great beginner course. It's a nice park, with a nice course. Sometimes pin markers are missing or misplaced, and some of the tee benches are unsafe to sit on. There's good diversity in the holes to test beginner players without overwhelming them. Perfectly reasonable for a beginner to get par here after a small amount of practice. The water and foliage can attempt to claim discs on bad throws, but I haven't lost a disc yet, in spite of dumping into the water twice on the back 9. This is the best course I've played in the area as a beginner. If you can manage to visit on weekdays or otherwise avoid certain groups, your experience will likely be much better.

Taylor Park Disc Club Is Amazing! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 19, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Right away you can tell that the local disc golf club, the Taylor Park Disc Club, takes a tremendous amount if pride and ownership in the course here. Start with the TWO practice baskets, a great course map, then move on the first tee where you'll find a well constructed locking disc return box, a fence to protect players from # 18's errant tee offs and a clock built into this nicely done tower. How does a clock like this not get rocked by the local mean teen population? All this plus the standard concrete tee pads, a bag holder, a bench, garbage cans and some of prettiest, most informative signs anywhere! The baskets are Discraft Chainstars which seem to be a popular choice down here in Florida.

The pretty colored signs have a hole map, the distances for the multiple baskets placements and a peg system for showing you which of the two, three or four positions the basket might be in. There are also shoe brushes on three holes, brooms hanging by each hole and several next tee signs, where needed.

The park is flat with scattered palmetto, pines and palms. Several holes 9-11-12-14-15 play right along the lake giving you lakefront, views and a chance of launching your discs into the waters. Also, I've read on past reviews, the lake is prime alligator habitat so you probably don't want to go wading in searching for your disc.

I was told this course is a favorite of the over 55 crowd and that's what I observed. I witnessed a first here today. I saw two couples, approximately 70-75, playing a round. Only once before have I seen a lady this age playing disc golf and today I see two in one foursome. They appeared to be two of the only disc golfers in existence that I could outdrive.

The playing part of Taylor Park DGC is just a smidgen above average, IMO. # 1 forces you to throw an anhyser but the others holes are mostly straight or you might have to annie around a tree here and there. # 12 in the B position is a sweet hole. It plays 336' and you're throwing down a pretty natural looking fairway with the basket set just in front of the lake. But my favorite today was # 15. It was 451' from the Long tee with the raised basket setting just about 15' from the lake. Definitely a scary putt or approach. Do you have the nads to go for it?

Cons:

This is a recreational level course. There are some longer holes but they're mostly open.

There are plenty of retired age walkers passing by. I had to wait a couple of times, especially on the group of holes playing along the lake.

Gators in the lake.

The flatness of the park is a deterrent, IMO. I can't get really excited about a course with no hills.

Although a pretty park, it's not amazingly beautiful or terribly visually pleasing. It's pleasant. It's nice. I think nearby Tocobaga was more interesting and more of a visually treat.

It's somewhat confusing trying to locate the course in the park. We drove by the main entrance to the course side of the park but then couldn't find an entrance. I asked someone who directed me all the way back to the other side of the lake. Later, I discovered that locals parked on the street just a few steps from # 1 and just walked in.

Other Thoughts:

I'm not aware of a course in the country with this much club support. What the Taylor Park Disc Club has done and continues to do here is amazing and should be recognized and applauded. I tip my hat to this club. I have only played one course whose amenities compare to Taylor Parks and that is Bryant Park in the Minneapolis area and there is a slight difference between them. Like Taylor, Bryant Park has wonderful amenities but Bryant has an incredible amount of engineered tee pads and basket placements. Taylor Park's amenities are probably even more impressive. But Bryant has elevation.

One Tampa Bay's Most Beautiful Courses 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 4, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

(3.723 Rating) (REVISED - replayed October 2017) - Generally regarding as one of the better courses in the Tampa Bay Region.
- CHARACTER - An amazing array disc golf comfort and amenity items. Of the 166 courses I've played as of this revision, Only Rollin Ridge (A Top 5 course in the World) exceeds Talyor. There's a shelter with a bunch of picnic tables. There's seating and bag hangers at every hole and most of the tees are shaded. There's some of the most amazing hole signage and they are among my Top 3 . There's an amazing course map at the parking area and two practice baskets! There are trash cans at several tees. There are about 50 total basket placements, with some holes with four basket positions, and the tee signs have basket location pegs. There are brooms at every hole, there are shoe brushes at a couple of holes that track a bit of mud, there's a lost disc return box and there's a totem pole (at tee 12) showing the distance and direction of every nearby course and more and more little touches.
- TEE PADS - They are all concrete and are about 10-12 feet long, about average in my opinion. There are also eight holes with two tee pads for rec and advanced players.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - Taylor is in my top 5, most beautiful courses in the entire State of Florida. (102 Florida courses played as of this revision) The landscape and adjacent lake are graceful, wildlife is abundant and the vegetation is vibrant. The course however took a bit of a hit from Hurricane Irma in Sept 2017. The storm took out around 40 trees and several were older pines in the path of play.
- MAINTENANCE - The grounds are usually mowed weekly. I've played ten rounds out here and only saw the grass higher than 6 inches once. Despite the heavy use, trash has always been in check.
- FORGIVENESS - The odds of losing a disc due to an errant shot is low with a few notable exceptions. The water on holes 9 and 11 claim a lot of discs. The tree canopy is mostly pine and mixed Deciduous trees with very few disc robbing palms in play. I'll also note that the overgrowth is in check on most holes.
- SHOT SELECTION - I found the shot selection to be a touch above average. Most seasoned players will be satisfied. The shots need to be fairly accurate to avoid moderately spaced trees. I personally play about half and half backhand to flicks. Several basket placements will dictate a certain ideal angle to attack from. Hole distances vary significantly despite all 3's (216-470 feet)
- UNIQUENESS - The holes themselves are slightly above average of what you'd expect to see on your average 18 hole course. There are several holes with water elements in play. There's one sort of dog leg on (3). There's a few moderate tunnel shots, hole (12) specifically stands out in this regard . A bunch of holes weave threw a pine canopy and are with marginal tight lines. Only one hole is a gimme in all positions, hole (8). There are a few blind baskets but this will vary depending on basket position layout. The longest placements will challenge advanced players to make par, being at well over 400 feet at a handful of placements.
- NAVIGATION - Better than most courses but still not without a few minor issues. There are a numerous directional arrows along paths, but you'll have to double back a couple times which can add to a bit of confusion (see con - layout flow). However, as long as you have a picture of the course map you'll figure it out.
- EVENTS - I am aware of handicaps every Sunday and it is very welcoming to newcomers. The event time is 9:30 AM and costs $5.25, and usually draws over 50 players. The course also hosts a huge ace race once a year with hundreds of competitors.

Cons:

A great course. All the issues below are nit picking.
- SLOWER PLAY - Lots of walkers in the park, you will likely have to wait a few times for safety reasons. In Addition, in the few times I've been here, there's always been numerous groups playing. Be safe, don't throw till a group clears.
- LAYOUT FLOW - Below average. The course is a tight fit and has a couple of double back spots due to the multitude of basket placements. However, I don't think any holes require a walk much over a two hundred feet between basket and next tee. There are several opportunities to skip a group of holes if needed.
- ELEVATION - Really none to speak of. I know that this is typically for Florida, but this course is flat for even Florida standards. No more than 15 feet of elevation change throughout the entire course layout. Hole (12) is the only hole that changes about 10 feet.
- LOCATION - The course is quite the hike from the freeway and the course parking is tucked way back into the park. Keep driving all the way to the end.
- GATORS - Do not go into the water for your disc on (9, 11, 12, 13 and 15). The water here is prime gator habitat. A 10 footer was recently relocated out of the park and I have personally seen 7 footers out here.

Other Thoughts:

Disc golfers visiting the Tampa Bay area need to add this course to their wish list. A touch less challenging and less unique than area courses Cypress, Cliff Stevens, Picnic and Oldsmar, but more fun loving, disc comforting and beautiful.
- REVISION NOTE - I lowered my rating a bit (0.09) after Hurricane Irma hit in Sept 2017. The storm made an impact on the course. I'd say the course is a 1/2 throw easier now and raw beauty was affected as well.

- Course has a nice flow and first timers will not have to worry about getting lost
- No holes were too long; most were around 250, which is a nice length for amateurs
- Just enough trees and water to make it hard but not frustrating
- Good variety of tighter and open holes
- Tee pads have shoe cleaners, bag hangers and benches, which makes the course feel like a Selah Ranch
- There was a warning of disc golf in the area and that always is a good sign
- Nice people to ask just in case you couldn't find a certain hole
- There was a great shaded practice area with two practice baskets
- Two tees per hole, so pros and ams can play

Cons:

- Many baskets in view of some tees
- A couple holes backtrack on each other, which when busy could be a problem with many discs flying around
- No holes to really air out and chuck it as far as you can
- Lots of non golfing pedestrians to watch for
- The park was kind of hard to get into, you had to snake all the way around the park to the entrance and go on this side road

Other Thoughts:

It is an interesting course with a couple of nice additions. I didn't see any alligators, and I came here thinking I would see one. Definitely have to watch out for other people, both golfers and non. Come here if you are in the area because this is a nice solid course.

A variety of shots. Course has great tee sign and 2 pads and alternate pin positions on some of the holes. Great baskets and good signs that show you to the next tee. Course plays on the side of a lake, so the scenery is nice too.

Cons:

Some of the holes are a bit too close together. This could be dangerous in a shotgun start tournament with players on every hole. Three or four of the holes play next to a walking path with exercise stations. I had to wait for seven minutes for 2 ladies to finish their exercise station just behind the basket to throw safely. There are several holes with extremely narrow fairways through lots of trees. This is not very interesting course design in my opinion.

Would be a better 12 hole course than 18 because you could get away from walking paths and spread the holes out a bit.

Generally, I'm not too concerned with the amenities of a course, as long as they are good enough to keep me playing and not wandering the wilderness. At Taylor Park, they stand out though. When I remember this course in the future, it won't be a signature hole that pops into my head. It will be those incredible tee signs. Those massive bag racks. More than anything, it might be those next-tee signs, with that font and those big helpful letters making sure I get to where I need to go.

The course flows really well. I jumped from hole to hole and didn't realize till near the end just how little space is occupied. Part of this is because of the flow and navigation but much of the credit has to go to the design. It's just a really impressive use of space. Squeezing in two fairways down that narrow stretch between the lake and the edge of the park would never have occurred to me. Yet it mostly works.

There are a few cool shots, especially 12, which has that small downhill through a a narrow tunnel which opens up for most of the fairway with the pin by the water. The placements the put the basket by the water were the best for me, and though all of the holes have several different spots for the target, 12 and 15 were there on the day I was. Not coincidentally, they were my favorite holes.

It's a well-appointed, intermediate-level course that, thanks to excellent navigation and flow, can be played quickly, although it may slow down more than most if it's busy.

Cons:

The limited space is, well, limiting. As the course goes down and back, parallel to the lake, it practically creates shared fairways for a number of holes. With a fence on side and lake on the other, there isn't really enough width to support two side-by-side fairways. Essentially it limits all of these holes to very straight shots or risky endeavors. It's mostly fine for forehanders like myself, but RHBH players will unfortunately have OB on their left for most of the course. That's not the major issue though. When the course is busy, players will often be in the firing range for players going the opposite way.

That's not the only area which is cramped enough to create a danger zone. The 18 and 3 pins essentially share a green. This is especially troublesome as the third tee is blind and close enough to make a run at the pin. (It's also the most likely opportunity for a black ace that I've seen.)

More importantly, or maybe less, there isn't much that will challenge an advanced player. The holes aren't very long, and they are all fairly open, so the better player may not find much to like here. At the same time, beginners may struggle with the OB and lose discs. So the amount of players that the course is suited for is fairly small. Now, I do fall into that intermediate category, but I recognize that many others will be not good enough or too good to fully enjoy it.

I wouldn't say that any of the holes here are truly bad(well, maybe 1). Just cramped. But there aren't any holes that I would describe as memorable either. It's a solid but unspectacular course with some nice obstacles but nothing approaching a signature hole. Given the acreage it must sit on, it's actually quite the achievement.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed my round here and would definitely recommend it for anyone of a similar skill level. It's not too far from a few other courses and it's worth a shot if you're in the area. It's just not a get-out-there-now-and-play-it recommendation.
