Must play if you're in Calgary 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 3, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is well mowed, and the rough is kept short enough to not cause issues. There is a great variety of shorts needed for this course and it will test your ability. Plenty of longer holes and shorter more technical holes.

Cons:

This may just be wishful thinking, but having DISCatcher or Mach 5 baskets out here would make this place just that much better.

Other Thoughts:

Super fun course.

Calgary's Best!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 9, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Lloyd Park is a great disc golf course. I have played most of the Calgary courses and do believe that this is truly the best course in Calgary, and here is why....

1. I have use every shot in my arsenal! Well maybe not the tomahawk, if I play smart. I am a Lefty and I have to use both BH and FH shots off the tee's. I also have to use the anny line on some holes for that gentle fade!

2. I have to use every disc in my bag. Some tee's require a nice S-curve to get to the basket for a birdie, some require an good Hyzer, and some require a shot strain up the middle.

3. There is a nice variety of hole distances! Every time I come up to the tee I don't feel like I'm in the Matrix (deja vu), unlike like some courses, where it is often the same flight path and same distance.

4. Location! Location! Location! The scenery is beautiful and often uninterrupted! I like the location of Baker DGC, but it's always busy! However, Lloyd park is usually not very busy, and as a result I don't feel rushed and get alot more enjoyment out of a round! I think the $5 day pass and the $20 year help keep it this way, not to mention the great facilities that come with it.

5. This course works well for all skill levels because it is open enough to see and find errant shots, but good shot placement is rewarded!! There is more more that I could say, but all in all I love this course, and that CDGA has done a great job at making it challenging and fun.

Cons:

The only cons I have about the course is that it is not done yet. I'm not sure what the timeline is but I'm fairly certain they plan to do the following.

1. New baskets
2. Better signage

Other Thoughts:

I know I gave this course 5 stars and it is not complete, but I feel that as it stands now it's is one of the best courses I've ever played (I've played about 20). When they put in the new baskets and better signage it will be the cherry on top!! It's a must play for anyone coming to play in the Calgary area!!

Exceptional course... in the making 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 8, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Update Oct, 2015: This course now has tee pads!
Update Oct, 2016: This course now has DD Veteran baskets!

The landscape in Lloyd Park was perfect for creating a challenging disc golf course, with a nice density of trees spread throughout. The CDCG has done it's best work to date here with the course design, with par 3s that generally you could birdie with a good shot, but you don't have to feel shame in the par. There's maybe three par 3s I can think of where good players are going to be disappointed leaving without a birdie, the rest will challenge you not to bogie.

The par 4s and the par 5 are what make this course interesting and challenging; they're not particularly long for their par, instead they challenge you more for good placement of the tee shot to set up your subsequent approach. Guardian trees limit the angles of approach to the basket. Stray off the fairway in the name of distance and you'll pay for it on your follow up shot. On the other hand, the course does give two par 4s that are long (600+ ft), but wide open with a steady downhill, to give you an opportunity to just let it rip.

This is the new home of serious disc golfers in Calgary going forward, just on the challenge and the design alone. If you want to improve your game, this is where you play. If you're from out of town, I think this is the course that'll have you saying a year later "I want to go back to Lloyd Park in Calgary, I bet I could put up a better score now".

Yes, it's relatively long, but in my limited experience this course is still much more about control and risk/reward decisions than rewarding raw distance. You'll need 300+ ft drives as a basic element of your game to shoot a hot round, and this is a great place to work on that range.

The course has very good tee pads with nice grip. There's some additional positives to this course given that it's in a private community park; good washrooms, parking, and picnic tables. The park is clean since everyone bought a $20 membership to be there, there's no "riff raff" like Old Refinery was plagued with.

Cons:

The cons for this course were briefly the tee pads and the baskets, but now that those are both top notch, this course is world class. Now the worst thing you can say about this course is that it could use a bit of landscaping (retaining walls around 9 tee pad and 12 basket hill), but we're into the small details now.

The grass in the rough is long, but the fairways are nicely mowed. While it's called a park, the area the disc golf course occupies is natural with some gnarly trees as hazards and long branches take away some of the easy hyzer lines on the course.

The fairways are getting mowed, which is excellent, but you might need some help looking for a disc in the rough. For this reason, it's a course better played in a group than alone.

Other Thoughts:

Lloyd Park is more than worth the measly $25, even if you only play 4 times a year. It's also my understanding that you can pay $5 for the day if you're just passing through town.

This place is a nice step forward for Calgary disc golf to have a better setting, and more space, to house the most challenging course in Calgary. The design of the course is such that it would be suitable for the world's top disc golfers to play a tournament on, without any modification required. Regardless of your skill level, as you play here, there's a lot of opportinity to improve your score in a variety of ways.

What remains is some development, which I understand is coming. New baskets and hopefully some expanded mowing are all things I would gladly pay a higher annual fee to help fund. I give it a 4 as a very well designed and fun to play course. With new new baskets and signs, I seriously don't think it's a stretch to say this could be one of the top 100 courses in North America.

Must play, for the challenge alone.
