Dust, Trees and Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Moderately challenging hole layout with enough space between the trees - either natural or cut - to demand reasonably accurate shots without random "pachinko" holes. Suitable for all abilities, except possibly bit rough for first-timers. Generally woods are open enough that errant discs can be found.

Cons:

Very dusty and rocky with lots of scattered broken tree branches makes for tricky footing. Despite a fair amount of elevation differential, not many elevated tees (most holes parallel a ridge or are in fairly flat areas). Had to hunt for a couple of holes.

Other Thoughts:

Spotter would have been helpful on a couple of holes where tee shot disappears behind trees (was alone, spent some time hunting but found them all). Launching off elevated #8 tee across a large open area (birdie!) was a blast after many tight holes constrained by trees. This is a fun course, about the right length considering the need to navigate rough ground.

Pros:

there are arrows telling you were the tee is if it is hard to find
there are signs at the tee telling you were the basket is
the baskets are really nice, they catch the disc if it hits the chains
there are short and long holes
there are up and down hill holes

Cons:

there are lots of places were you need a spotter or you will most likely lose your disc
there is really bad footing
the tees are dirt tee pads

She’s pretty but mean 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

• Easy to find
• Nice baskets
• Restrooms in a couple spots
• Cool signs although starting to fade
• Nice mix of shots

Cons:

• There's recently been some serious tree clearing
• Navigation can get tricky in spots
• Really dense trees in spots
• Tees are just cleared dirt areas

Other Thoughts:

Tips
• Use the map
• Bring a spotter or 3
• Bring your best ankles

Random Thoughts:
Something to say up front is that a whole bunch of trees have been cleared in spots on this course. I suspect it looked very different when the trees were up. But with that said, this is still a tough course. There are trees everywhere and you are frequently aiming at very narrow spots between them. I'd argue that a couple baskets are outright unfair because the trees are so dense in front of you. These drives will basically be the 'fire and hope for some luck' variety. The other thing the clearing of trees has done is make the terrain, mostly in the first few holes, very tricky to traverse. I'd advise taking your time and watching your footing. The good news is that once you get past that first area, you come to some nice walkable clearings. Of course, that doesn't mean the shots are easy. The course itself has a decent mix of shots but I'd argue they all demand a good amount of precision and some pretty decent length. There are significant elevation changes here and there, and the rough can be wicked in spots, so I do recommend using a spotter.

Bottom Line:
This is challenging course in a scenic but dense forest. It will demand a good game from an intermediate or above player. While I felt like a couple baskets need to be moved, I still enjoyed the challenge and I look forward to returning, hopefully, after all the clean-up is done.

lots of trees and elevation 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 25, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great baskets, signs were easy to find. Arrows were very helpful. Very creative art work around the course. Great use of down trees for benches. Nice long holes, not many short easy birdies. Hole 18 is set up on a tier of logs and super fun last hole. Worth driving to play this course. Friendly staff.

Cons:

Signs were beginning to fade and measurements seemed off. Parking is kind of a free for all, just don't park where you block the road is what we were told.

Other Thoughts:

I would definitely play this course again. Maybe not the best course for beginners but discs were pretty easy to find.

Dust off your Gaiters it's time for fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 4, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

You can use your wide variety of Disc Golf skills on this course. Our group of 3 used backhand and forehand (both heizer and anheizer), tomahawk, thumber, turbo-putt, roller, and more. Trails built into hillsides of this rugged course. Benches being installed. Water fountain and restroom at T-8 then you pass by again mid-fairway for hole 12. Uphill, downhill, multiple trees. Good finish with holes 15-18 not super long but challenging. Great risk vs reward. Somewhat forested-somewhat logged setting. Good workout. 1.5 miles of dirt road off highway. Disc golf friendly. Well marked, score cards, map and pencil available at check in.The place was logged in 2016/2017 so it should not be logged for 20 years or so I am guessing and the cedar trees are popping up, so it has potential to grow back and be quite lush for many years. Warm up basket,

Cons:

The course was logged in 2016-2017 since I played this last year so there are less trees, more fallen timber and dust, less shade, and the footing is rougher, so I downgraded it to a 3.5. The dirt tees are a bit bumpy in places and can wear you down. Still very dusty/dirty. Pay to play (but worth every penny). Hole 7-8 and 16-17 have RV sites nearby or other risk of hitting something. Not a lot of parking. Course has been or being logged in places, slash piles and logs to climb over.

Other Thoughts:

Camping nearby I have played this course as my main recreation for the camping trip and it holds up for many days of challenge and fun. the recent logging has taken away some of the equalizing that trees bring, still challenging, fun , exercise, check it out!

Diamond in the rough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

I love the cookie sheet tee signs.
Most holes have "next tee" signs.
Primitive feel to the course, the rough is rough --not a lot of undergrowth, but a lot of downed trees.
Lots of uphill/downhill shots.
Decent fairways, with tight windows.

Cons:

Dirt tee pads are rough, but they feel appropriate for this course.

Other Thoughts:

Drove up from Sonora early Sunday morning. Had the whole course to myself. Beautiful wooded setting, sunshine, what else could you want? Got an awesome breakfast at Alicia's Sugar Shack just before the course in Twain Harte. Well worth the trip, wish I could have played a couple of more time.
If you haven't played at 4,800 feet above sea level, bring your understable discs!

Absolutely a blast, even in this early format 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 17, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Beautiful
Technical/Layout
Very friendly locals

Cons:

Infrastructure
Maybe two UNfairways

Other Thoughts:

This course is an absolute blast and absolutely worth paying for! Clearly a labor of love, this course feels like it was designed by disc golfers to put a giant smile on the face of EVERY disc golfer ever. Feel like throwing long? Feel like throwing short? Feel like throwing forehand, backhand, overhand, uphill, downhill, over water tanks, over snow, over a pile of burning trees, at an elevated basket, through tiny gaps, through giant gaps, and all while enjoying a beautiful alpine hike? Then check out Three Links, just don't expect tee pads, signs, or any established course markings. Oh, and if you're a relative flatlander like me, bring your understable plastic, because the ~4000ft elevation means your Roadrunner feels a little bit like your trusty Firebird :)

Pros:
Beautiful: If you're visiting the area, I don't have to convince you that it's beautiful enough to walk around in, since you probably drove hours just to see it. This course is a beautiful hike with baskets. If you live in the area, you may be desensitized, and there's not much I can do for you there.

Technical/Layout: As I said above, this course has absolutely every type of shot (except maybe the staple of the alpine course: the top-of-the-world shot). I know nothing about its history, but I feel pretty confident saying that it was designed with this this goal in mind. I played it two days in a row, and all night on day one, I couldn't stop planning out my shots for day two. Most golfers will be tested throughout the course. Always worth mentioning that it ends right at the parking lot, which is a must.

Friendly locals: Locals were stoked to meet us and chat. Not that Santa Cruz is necessarily unfriendly, but this was a very different world of welcoming.

Cons:
Infrastructure: By itself, this keeps the course from entering the higher echelon of ratings. As of January, 2016, this course is still in development, and doesn't yet have tee pads or signs. There are course maps available, which do a fine job of keeping you on track, but you should expect to do a bit of squinting through trees to spot the baskets. Look up for signs of where to go. Also, keep an eye out for yellow tape and pink flags that mark out the course. Given the terrain, the lack of tee pads is occasionally a real issue, as footing can get pretty bad. Even approximate distances on the map would be a nice touch. When these touches go in, this would add a half point for me.

A couple of UNfairways: Technical, tight, golf is my favorite golf. I am bored if I don't have to carve lines and my big-armed friends demolish me out in the open. However, for me, it's important to always have lines to hit. This is always a delicate balance since the tougher it is to reach a fairway gap, the bigger the gap needs to be in order to take luck out of the equation. By my count, there were at least two holes that required a bit of luck. Of course, there's nothing actually unfair about these, since everyone is playing the same course, but I always view these as a bit of a bummer in an otherwise carefully designed layout. I guess I always like my score to be a true reflection of how I played, never a measure of luck. Apparently, I had a little luck on my side on day two since I shot a 50 :)

I will never visit the area without a stop at Three Links! Thank you folks for all your hard work on this place.

Dusty but fun! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 16, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The holes were challenging and varied in length, openness, and turn. Some were short and technical with loads of trees to navigate. Others were long and open. There were an equal number that played to both forehand and backhand throws.

Cons:

Very dusty everywhere. The dust will stick with you, so plan on showering after your round. Some of the tees weren't smooth, so there was a danger of rolling your ankle if you stepped wrong. Also, since the signage is paper plates, sometimes it wasn't clear where to go.

Rough around the edges, and the middle. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

No other public courses within 45 minutes.
Bad disc golf is still better than no disc golf.
Has a couple of unique and fun holes.
Plenty of parking.
Water fountain and restrooms.

Cons:

Tee boxes are terrible and borderline dangerous.
Paths are terrible and borderline dangerous.
Approximately half the holes involve large amounts of luck.
Costs $ (not always a con, but is for this course).
Very little shot variety.

Other Thoughts:

As of this review, the course is brand new. I will try to write another review as work is done.

As is, this course is awful. Most of the holes are very short (~300' and under). This should make for a good beginner course, except for the large number of trees. While all but perhaps two holes have legitimate fairways, hitting about half of the fairways involves throwing a line with perhaps five feet of room for error. So many holes of this type will frustrate beginners and experts alike. I have no problem with challenging holes, if it feels like the challenge is one that can be overcome. That makes for better players. The tree-heavy holes on this course don't involve conquerable challenges, they involve luck.

Along that line, the tee boxes are so rough and powdery that throwing from anything other than a standstill without tripping involves luck. The same goes for the walking paths.

Do you throw a RHFH Anhyzer Flex shot? You might do okay. Don't have that shot? You have no chance of driving well on most of the holes.

I want to like this course. As it is, $3 to play half a dozen half-decent holes just doesn't do it. This course needs serious work (some tree removal to create real playable lines, hard-surfaced tees). It has some real potential, but as is just isn't worth playing for me.

Rough and Challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 11, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Challenging course - the DGCR estimate of a 51 being a 1000 rated round seems about right. Precision is required more than distance, though a couple holes require > 350 ft throws for a birdie
Variety - Long and short holes, uphill, downhill and flat, right to left, left to right throws, a couple open shots, though only one truly open throw.
Scenery - beautiful woods, with most of the course away from camp structures, making it feel very remote.
Weather - at 5000 feet, a great way to escape the heat of the Central Valley.
The elevated basket on 18 was well used. I usually am annoyed by elevated baskets, but this one was on the side of a hill that just encouraged proper drive / approach placement for a level putt, and punishment for misses.

Cons:

Trails and teeboxes are still a bit rough. These should clear up in the coming months, as the course is still new and being worked on.
Some holes feel a little "throw and pray" through the dense woods. They are usually shorter though, and serve as a test of approach shots.

Other Thoughts:

This is a rough, mountain course at the base of the Sierra Mountains. Trails are squirrelly, and inappropriate for carts. The course is constantly moving up and down hills, and will prove challenging for most golfers. There is also a good chance to lose discs, and spotters would be helpful on a couple holes (especially 5). That all being said, the challenge is certainly worth the effort, and you are rewarded with a unique (for the area) golf experience.
The closest comparable courses I could think of were the dense woods holes of Whistlers Bend, Adair or Milo McIver in Oregon, or the back nine of Greenbrier State Park in WV. Locally, it reminded me of Zephyr Cove in Tahoe, with the elevation changes, though I think this course was a bit more densely wooded.

Brand Spankin' New Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful location. You have to see the elevated basket on hole 18. Super nice people at the camp and the local disc golfers.

Cons:

Several tight holes are well protected by trees make for a tough par. Might be a little bit difficult for first time disc golfers.

Other Thoughts:

Course is built surrounding the Odd Fellow's Three Links Camp on Hwy 108 outside of Mi-Wuk Village. Took about 2 hours to get in 18 holes. Tee boxes are currently marked with temporary numbers and pink landscape ground flags. Definitely need some good hiking shoes to cover the trails. A lot of shots off the tee are going to hit trees, however there are often safe areas to shoot for. I absolutely loved hole 18 with the elevated basket feature.
