Aptly Named

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 2, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

- great use of mature pine trees to force some shot shaping
- area of multi-use park is devoted to disc golf
- mostly straightforward navigation
- ChainStar baskets are basic but in good shape
- course sign at beginning of course makes start clear
- ample parking
- decent concrete tees
- some good hole length variety
- park is generally well maintained and clean

Cons:

- despite trees, fairways are still pretty open and not especially challenging
- tee posts only have hole number and distance, no maps
- almost entirely flat
- some of the holes felt a bit repetitive
- limited amenities - one bench, no garbage cans, no practice basket
- course has a bit of a manure smell
- hole 6 plays too close to industrial area

Other Thoughts:

I'm honestly a little surprised by the reviews of The Pines. This is a fun enough course, but I thought it was pushing it even at 2.5. Seems that most thought it was better than I did and that's ok.

The Pines is a very fast moving round on a course I doubt ever gets very busy. While you can sometimes see multiple baskets at once due to the openness of the course, navigation mostly follows a straight line and wasn't too confusing; the exception was hole 7. The basket straight ahead is from hole 1; basket 7 is a hard dog leg right to a blind basket.

I do wonder if this course used to be a bit more wooded based on some of the ratings. It's a decent course, but nothing particularly stood out to me. I appreciated the mature trees but the course is still fairly open with no elevation change and a lot of repetition. There is good hole length variety; most are on the shorter side but hole 6 is over 400 ft. All the equipment here is very serviceable - tees could be slightly wider but are concrete, and maps on the tee signs would be nice, but these aren't desperately needed with the exception of hole 7.

Overall, you could probably play this course solo in 30 minutes or even less. If you are playing Veteran Hills and Justin Trails, there's pretty much no reason not to stop here. It is right on the route and is a very quick detour. Just save your legs for Justin Trails because it is a brutal workout!

For some reason the area seemed smelly to me while I was there. It is in a heavy farming area and usually natural smells like manure don't bother me much, but it definitely didn't add to the round. All that said, this course seemed to stand up to the elements well and was in great shape in early March. Given how much other reviewers seemed to enjoy it, odds are it's worth a quick stop if you're in the area.

Great Use of Land Available 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Course designers made fantastic use of a fairly limited piece of wooded land

+ Concrete tee pads are of sufficient size and well constructed

+ Great-catching Discraft Chainstar baskets

+ Well thought-out use of large pines requiring a fair amount of shot-shaping and shot selection

+ Course designers refrained from placing holes throughout much of the open parts of the park and kept them mostly in the wooded area (as it should be IMO)

+ Course seemed well-maintained and fairways freshly mowed

+ For the size of this course (and, again, the property) Some holes are lengthier than one might expect

Cons:

- Due to the tight quarters of the property some of the holes crossed the paths of other ones, which could be dangerous if multiple people are playing the course at the same time; however, it seems this course doesn't get a significant amount of traffic, so it largely should not become much of an issue.

- Unless I am mistaken and shot at the wrong pin (which is entirely possible), holes 1 and 7 share the same basket.

- Tee signs only show the hole and distance, not where the basket for each hole is in relation to the tee pads, flight paths, etc. (this became somewhat frustrating, as when stepping to some tees it is difficult to determine which of the many visible baskets is the one you are shooting for).

- Hole 6 had some vehicles parked just left of the fairway, which caused some concern when I teed off. The green of this same hole was in a lower lying area, which seemed prone to standing water (but a great place for a basket).

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I was a bit surprised by how well this course was designed and how enjoyable it was to throw. A significant amount of rain fell in the days prior to my visit here, so the ground was a bit marshy and had some standing water in spots (see hole 6 approach picture), but this may have simply been an outlier when I visited the course. This course was sort of on my way to play Veteran Hills in Viroqua and am very glad I made this part of the trip.

Really nice 9 in a surprising place 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 hole course set up near the high school in Cashton, WI. the area the course is in is pretty disc golf exclusive.

Concrete tee pads, all exceptional. Long, grippy trapezoids. Really nice. One tee per hole.

Brand new looking DGA baskets. They caught well, were mounted properly, and were generally great. One pin position per hole.

If you like tight, wooded golf, this is a place you're going to love. The lines are all fair, but you're going to need good shots to score well here. The first and last holes play in and out of the wooded area, and everything else pretty much lies in a pine stand.

For such a small area, they packed in a lot of great shots. There must have been a redesign since this page was put up, because several of the holes are longer than listed here. Hole 2 is a nice 300' shot down a really tight tunnel. Hole 6 is about 350', with more of the same. There are still a few shorter holes, but not nearly as short as what is listed here, as of now.

Nice tee signs, with all the information you'll need. They help greatly with navigation.

Very cart friendly.

Cons:

The navigation is a little wonky in the middle of the pine stand, but nothing that isn't easy to figure out. Basically, a lot of stuff packed into a smallish area.

No bombers type holes here...all technical golf.

It's a flat piece of land. Not much to be done about that. No water, either.

Other Thoughts:

This was a surprisingly fun course that I played on my way to Justin Trails. It was beautifully mowed, the fairways were all clearly defined, and it was just a fun little spin. If I would have had more time, I would have loved to run it again.

Cashton is kind of out in the middle of nowhere, so not many people will get here....but for the people that live here, this is a fantastic spot to play. Definitely worth a spin (or three) if you're close or on your way to Justin Trails.

2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is set up in a well manicured park. The baskets are chainstars that were all in good shape and caught great. The tee pads are concrete and are decent sized and grip well. The flow is very easy to follow here. The course starts and ends near the parking lot. The course is designed well for the space available. The course is flat but there are trees to contend with on most holes, though not really on 1 and 9. It's free to play and up all year.

Cons:

No elevation or water but it is what it is for what they had to work with. It can be a tiny bit confusing as to which basket to throw to on a couple holes for first time players.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is just a pretty fun, well designed niner. There's nothing that will blow you away here but it is definitely a fun, quick round with a couple other cool courses nearby to make a day out of it. Nothing to go out of your way to play but worth a spin if you're in the area for sure.

Quick Course! A lot in a Little Space 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 9, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fast playing course right off of Highway 33. Great tee pads and well groomed fairways. Baskets are in good shape and not a ton of other golfers to contend with. Course well kept overall.

Cons:

Flat. No signage (coming soon I'm told). Only 9 holes. Sometimes the local school has gym class (ultimate frisbee, so that's cool) on fairways #1 and #9. No 'big air' holes.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a fun course for those in the area or just passing through. I don't tend to agree that it's necessarily a beginner course as there are several holes that take quite the technical shot to 'park'. Not a big arm course, but hole 6 let's you rip one, but better do it accurately!

Tree Huggers 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Challenging
Doesn't take long to play

Cons:

If it's wet it's muddy! Typical for a new course. Once the grass grows in thicker it should be good. Right now I would say only downfall is by the tee pads because they were just installed.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't say it's beginner friendly, this course is in "the pines" so if you can't navigate effectively around trees with minimal space than you will have a rough outing. But regardless this is a fun course and I would suggest everyone play it. If your looking for an easy beginner course I suggest going to Prairie du Chien and shooting the 18 there.
