Challenger! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 11, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are three spots to throw from so nice for those who aren't great have a chance. The front nine, while a challenge was tolerable. Hole 10 is the open long and it was great to just launch. The others in the park were nice, and helpful.

Cons:

This is a very challenging course, and it is laid out a little wonky. Like, it can be a bit of a hike between holes, and there is not a good map. Many of the holes have one tee box for the three tees, so you have to look around to find where to throw from.

Other Thoughts:

I didn't see a whole lot of Creek, but a bit of swamp and lots of trees. This is not for the faint of heart or new players. It was a fun course, though. If you want the challenge, take a shot here.

Very tight in the Woods

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 29, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-It's a course heavily wooded, some ravines, marsh, and a few open holes.

-Red tees will challenge beginners, intermediate will be tested by the white, and blue can be difficult for advanced.

-10 of the 18 tees have been replaced with turf. It would seem likely the others will be replaced as well.

- the hole signs look new and had an arrow on the map pointing to the next tee after playing the hole.

-On the hole sign it will show you the location of each tee. That's important because some tee locations without turf cant be found. Just play where you think its located.

- Their were arrow directions posted on trees to guide you to the next tee, which was needed. My first visit I found no need for a map.

-Snakes, geese, and sand fiddlers are the wildlife I've encountered.

-I play a few rounds first thing in the morning, and I'm normally the only one on the course. It's peaceful.

-Not sure if its park staff or the local Disc Club, but the past few months they've put a lot of time in the wooded portion of course clearing out brush, fixing
the one bridge, and grooming. It looks perfect!!

-Beginners and Recreational will find some wooded holes extremely challenging. Intermediate and Advanced will find those same holes either a joy from the challenge, or frustrating from lack of good lines.

Cons:

-Some of the wooded holes are ridiculously poke and hopes 1, 3, 12, 15, and 17. Long blue tees 2, 5, 8, 12, 14-15, and 18 may seem impossible, and short red 17.

-The 8 remaining non turf tees are either sunken gravel, or uneven dirt with roots in the woods.

-The long par 5 No. 10, there's nothing between tee and basket. It's the most boring hole I've played on any 18-hole course. If the wind is blowing, it may be against you, and even longer.

-The snakes, I've seen them cross the trails in the woods. It's sunglasses off and eyes ahead.

-Lost Disc potential can be high in the woods; disc can deflect in the poke and hope holes, and the water carries on 7 and 13.

Other Thoughts:

I really like the Blue layout, its very difficult off of the tees trying to hit gaps, reach baskets and throwing over the marsh on a few holes. For all tees its a pinball machine in the woods with the heavy trees. Then there's the rollers when putting. You get a break on 9 thru 10, and 16.. I give the layout a 4.5 mostly on blue, and that's where my overall rating is anchored on.

It takes about an hour to play red, 75 min to play white, and 90 mins blue.

Roller baskets: 1, 4, 6, 7, 11, 12, and 15. Depending on the angle, they can be death putts into the marsh or down a ravine.

Holes: 1, 2/blue, 3-5, 8, 14-15, and 18 are a variety of hitting a gap and tunnel shots.

Featured Holes:

No. 6 Blue Par 3 375 feet from the open to woods. 30 foot gap at 100 feet down. Down ravine and back up, the shelf is about 240 feet out, at that point dog legs left. In the ravine is canopy and heavy trees with brush on both sides of fairway. from shelf theirs heavy trees to the basket with very small gaps to get there. The basket may not be seen from shelf and is to the right, at 20 feet from basket the shelf drops. Death putt.

No 11. Blue Par 4 489 feet. Tee from open fairway to heavy woods that look like a picket fence. The fairway on left is lined with oak trees. The fence is about 300 feet out, the fairway then down slopes to basket in heavy woods. The basket is a lazy roller. From tee hug the oaks hitting the 15 foot gap on left at fence, best path to basket.

No. 12. Blue Par 3 309 feet? Maybe 270? Very shallow and small ravine gently down and back up to shelf about 120 feet out. Then back down to basket with a clutter of trees with small gaps to a lazy roller. From tee heavy trees and brush down fairway 15 feet wide. At 90 feet 2 large pines left fairway, and to the right two smaller pines on right about 5 feet forward, and a 6 foot gap. RHBH has an advantage over LHBH. Good luck!

No. 15 Blue Par 3, 322 feet tee is located in an open field throwing back into the heavy woods at 135 feet. The inviting gap is only 7 feet wide between thick pines. The fairway straight down is thick with skinny trees and some thick ones. The fairway is also crowned where the disc can skip in either direction down into a ravine. The basket is a roller, to the left just a few feet is a death putt into the swamp, to the right for 20 feet is a gentle slope into brush, but hot disc could roll into the swamp. It's a humbling experience on the tee to ready your throw. However, To the left of the pine at the gap is wider at 20 feet, it looks closed in when theirs foliage, but its leafy and the disc will slow a bit, but stay on course with a left to right after arriving into the woods. Still some trees to get by. The left to right will help bite into the crown of the fairway, and just slide some towards the swamp. The approach is thick with trees and need another gap, but you have the advantage with an approach or putt having the right side behind the basket with those 20 feet and backstop for any missed shot. I've pulled it off a few times either from blue or white.

No. 17 Blue Par 4 510 feet? Looks more like 410 feet. The tee is elevated over a grassy fairway that rises back up to a shelf about 5 feet higher than tee area. The shelf is about 210 feet and a straight shot, then a lazy dog leg right to basket. On right side of shelf from tee is blocked by heavy trees, on left is trees and brush. The landing area is about 20 feet wide, if you don't make the shelf, a roller may take you to the marsh. On approach its straight and narrow to the basket with the same 20 foot width. 5 feet behind basket is heavy brush.

Signature Hole No. 7, Blue Par 3 260 feet. Open tee across Marsh to a roller basket half way up hill. Tee is about 5 feet elevated above basket and a straight shot. The marsh is about 20 feet below. At the 70 foot mark is a 20 foot gap to reach marsh with heavy trees and brush on right, and marsh/creek on left. Its about 230 to reach other side of marsh. Above the last 30 feet is overhanging limbs. The wind plays a factor from the creek. I've had beautiful flights where the disc rises up, then drops just below the limbs. The basket can be parked to the right where the hill has a small ledge. Its a fun and challenging throw! And scenic.

Trouble Hole is No. 13 Blue Par 3 310 feet? Maybe about 360? The tee is elevated above the marsh, with the creek to the left. The right side of tee is block by brush about 10 feet out Your throwing to a shelf about 240 feet out, and elevated above you about 15 feet. To safely reach across the marsh you need at least 210 feet. Hit the wall to the shelf, a roller to the marsh or if your lucky can get hung on the wall. On the left over the marsh, on your way too the shelf is over hanging branches, so you can only get to the shelf on a right to left, the flight path is a lazy dog leg left. On top of the shelf, are a handful of skinny trees in the middle with two gaps. The gap on the left is about 20 feet wide, the right 10 feet. Hit the trees in the middle, you may roll back in the marsh. Pass the trees on the shelf, is a clear path to the basket. The hole is very challenging and scenic. The huge pine tree that you see in the white tee photo that also blocked shots, is no longer there, it came crashing down recently, and after I had taken the photo.

Out of State Visitor 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Every basket has its own challenge. If it is an open area, then you either have a long distance to cover or the basket is out of site around a tree line. If the basket is in the woods, you may have trees, a small window to throw through, or a swampy area to throw over.
Overall I liked the unique and diverse challenges every basket offered.
It appears that they are making improvements to the course.
They seemed to be adding a lot of mulch to the areas that you walk in the woods. There were giant piles of unspread mulch in places.

Cons:

You MUST have a map. You can get them online.
I spent more time looking online for a map of the course and searching for the next tee pad than i did actually playing the course.
There are NO clearly defined directions.
There are trees with spray painted arrows that tell you which direction to go which don't really offer much help.
Baskets do not have yellow ring around top making them hard to visibly spot in the woods. They are plain metal baskets.
Some tees have gravel, some have concrete.

Other Thoughts:

Bring Bug Spray!
Find a map on you Phone.
Have patience looking for tee pads and baskets
Allow yourself more time than usual to play for the unclear directions.
You will have a great time playing this course. Definitely challenged my skills.
This course would be Excellent if they would make their baskets more visible, tee pads clearly visible, and easy to navigate directions to the next tee pad.

Pros:

Good variety of shots

Fun use of geography throwing over parts of the creek
Free to play
Uncrowded from what I saw

Cons:

Dirt tees
Not many signs and hard tee markers to see

Other Thoughts:

I would look at a map before you go or it can be tough to find your way around. I would say its definitely worth playing because of the geography.

Really nice course to find out where your strength lie.
If your experienced you can make this a fun course.

Maybe they have a map somewhere, I've never seen it, but I haven't looked super hard either
A few holes you assume you know where the basket is aaaannnnnddddddd your wrong...

Pros:

Nice course that circles the outskirts of the water. Lot of terrain change which makes if fun. love holes 7 and 13, you drive over a marsh to the banks on the other side. Mostly shaded.

Cons:

I been playing course for a wile now so i know the course but it be nice to have signs at each hole for newer players or out of town players. or have a map at the parking lot to give players a general idea on where to go. Gravel tee boxes need work all rutted up.

Other Thoughts:

Watch out for stumps and roots, i know its in the woods but just keep an eye out, some brush was cut like 3" from ground making it a tripping hazard. Love this course just wish they fix up a few things and it be great. Also i made a new score card for this course since some holes moved it not 100% accurate but close enough for me and my buds to use when we play.

Quick, tough course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 13, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Difficult but achievable lines on each hole. Great use of the landscape. This area has a ton of water but not enough courses utilize the uniqueness of the area (i.e. bayville).

Cons:

Hard to navigate the first time out. This is really my only con for the course other than a few holes that have some extremely tight fairways. If they would add a map and signs at each hole this course would be getting 4's.

Other Thoughts:

Love the course, love the location, very easy to get through a round quickly just tricky to get through quickly the first time out. I would love to help put up tee-signs and a map...

Challenging course, lots of trees and rough terrain. Mud, swampy areas, and lots of roots...and bugs!

Cons:

No signs at tee areas(if you can find them). Very hard to navigate. Spent a lot of time figuring out where the basket was on each hole before playing. Played the first 4 or 5 holes and then could not find the next hole. Thanks to a local that pointed us in the right direction or we would have probably not found the next hole. It was way over by the boat launch area. The hole that you had to throw over a big swampy gorge was pretty cool, but overall not real happy with this course. Didnt see any but from what i hear...watch out for snakes!

Other Thoughts:

With some work this course could be nicer. Put up some signs and make baskets more visible, improve the tees, and offer a course map. I might go back sometime and play but would rather journey out and find nicer courses to play. Add some benches, trash cans, and bag holders.

Pros:

New gravel tee pads put in over the weekend, some course management by cutting down a few oddly placed trees, short drive from my house.

Cons:

Trees, trees, and well trees!! All but 2 holes 9/10 play either into, out of, or through the woods.

Other Thoughts:

Rating this a little higher than i previously would have. Showed up monday and BAM new gravel tee pads, played a few holes and noticed that they had cut down some trees that were right in the way of tee shots, and i also noticed when i was playing that they had layed some foundations to move baskets around in the near future, all of this was a much welcomed sight especially since the last time i played was only a week before.

EDIT: all baskets have now been moved to the new alt. position.

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 5, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Three (natural) tee locations per hole. For this review I played from the middle/whites.

Cons:

A bit too tight (random)/short/flat/repetitive.

Other Thoughts:

Other than wide-open, extremely long (~1/7th of the total course length is provided by this one hole) number-10, the course plays in-to, out-from, and within a dense collection of small-/mid-sized tree trees that form a border between the open space of this small, flat park, and the water, mini-inlets, and marshes of Bennett's Creek.

There are a few decent holes here. A couple holes have you throw over a marsh/inlet, more mental than physical challenging for the advancing player, and the short tees are located to minimize the chance the newer player will find much trouble. Holes 12-15, in the far corner, use what little elevation change is available, and have some of the larger trees to avoid..

From the tee, you'll need a blend of straight and turns, including some fishhooks! You'll also need, at times, a bit (lot) of luck, as some throwing lanes/windows are quite tight - bordering on random, sometimes crossing the border! Alternate lanes typically don't exist, the dense collection of trees can prevent easy recovery, and some "unfairly" (challenging?) located trees can re-direct many a fine looking-shot.

Favourite hole: #13, as it offers both the marsh and elevation change, in addition to the ever-present (larger) trees, to overcome, with #7 being an honourable mention, as it is similar to #13, and also provides a bench, just past the basket, from where there are some nice views.

While I enjoyed my round here, and would play again, given sufficient time, you do have to have an inclination for random/tight to play here frequently.

Reviewed: Played on:May 25, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice variety of shots, clean course, most of the locals are very friendly, the layout is great although it can be sort of challenging to navigate your first few times. The white tees on holes #7 and #13 go across a marsh and are awesome shots. The blue tee on #13 stands out, although a little hard to find it is one of my favorite shots on the course.

Cons:

Lack of signs on a number of holes, the brush can be pretty thick during the summer months so be careful, the thorns are monstrous. The skatepark can be pretty annoying at times, especially in the summer or after school. A few holes have no fairway, just a bunch of trees, which earned it the nickname in my group of friends "Bennett's Trees."

Other Thoughts:

This is my home course and the first one I ever played on so it will always hold a sentimental value to me, if it's your first time I would recommend playing here, just stick to the red tees because some of the white shots are just plain unfair at times.

Definetely a Challenge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 18, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Challenging course. Most of the holes are in the woods and there are plenty of trees to punish you if you don't make a good shot.
2) Mostly shaded - Allows you to play throughout the summer without burning up or getting too hot.
3) Elevation Change - This is a good amount of elevation change considering how flat the area around it is. There is a good number of holes where the elevation makes the game a little more challenging.
4) Water holes - There are two holes where you can tee off over the water/marsh which adds to the excitement and challenge.

Cons:

1) Lack of signage - Many of the holes have signs but there are a few that are missing.
2) Finding tees - The tees are mostly wooden blocks and generally aren't too hard to find but there were a few holes where it was difficult to determine which tee was which.
3) Baskets hard to find - Being in a wooded area the baskets were sometimes hard to spot from the tee. A bright flag or bright colored baskets would help. Finding the basket for hole 11 was tough. I ended up heading to what I thought was 11 but was acutally 14. However this may just be a first timer's mistake.
4) Navigation - Most of the holes were fairly easy to find but there were a few exceptions.
5) Pedestrians - Some of the fairways double as a walking path in the park so there is a chance that someone may walk into the fairway.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed this course very much. It is definetely a challenge, particularly for a beginner but if you can succeed here you will do well elsewhere. It has a good mix of open holes and wooded areas. Hole 10 is all out in the open so if you want to test your driver this is the hole for you. If you are bringing first timers out it might be better to start on the back 9. The cons I have listed are just small things to be aware of. You may get turned around a little on your first trip around the course but it is enjoyable and well worth the trip.

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 7, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tight but doable fairways. Some of the holes look like they were designed by Ewoks. I know that is a strange comment but this place is really unique. I played in Feb, and it was easy to find my disc and no bugs. More fun than Bayville for the advanced player. Nice change of terrain and use of it. Throws across water which up the stakes! 18 holes

Cons:

Tough to navigate for the 1st time, but after that it's a breeze. Rooty tees for several of the holes. #10 is like practicing your drive in a soccer field.

Other Thoughts:

I aced hole #1 on my 1st day here, so that auspicious start may have made me overly biased towards enjoying the course, but it really is a strange gem of a course. Definitely worth a round if you're in the area and don't want to get hit by a disc at Bayville.

Bennett's Trees........Not enough Creek! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 7, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

18 holes. Good sturdy baskets. Beautiful park. Great amenities for a day trip. Playground for kids, tennis courts, and porta-pottys. Multiple sets of tees. Challenging holes throughout. Great views on many holes.

Cons:

Fairways not defined on a majority of holes. Tiny blocks of wood mark the tees. Horrible and hard to find them all. No real tee boxes. All dirt between blocks of wood. Not very FTF (First Time Friendly). No maps or scorecards, Without either it's very hard to follow the flow, especially from 4 to 5 and 9 to 10.

Other Thoughts:

The course is fun despite the Cons listed, But the Cons are true. Many holes have nearly NO fairway and you must force navigate or throw for luck through the multiple trees on a wing and a prayer. Even so, the holes do give you a different type of look on every hole. Hole 10 is nothing more than a long bomb across an open field, maybe most boring hole in all of VA, seemed out of place. As if placed to simply make "Grip and Rip it" players happy.

Favorite Hole: 7, Trees are blocking the path to basket, but not impossibly. Great hole with multiple possible paths to throw and make it all the way through.

Notes: Great Bench overlooking creek for a nice view and break between 7 and 8.

I know I will get some thumbs down from local lovers of the Creek, but the truth is the truth. Again a fun, if challenging course , that would be rated a bit higher if there were maps/scorecards available to help with navigation, more defined fairways, and a better flow from hole to hole.

Navigation Notes: To get from 4 to 5 you must cross the boat dock walking across and through the parking lot. From 9 to 10, walk straight across the street and into the huge open field you past on left as you are driving into park. The Tee is near a cone a third of the way toward the basket.

No tee pads, just dirt and roots for you to trip over.

Other Thoughts:

Considering its free, I shouldnt say that its awful. For lack of other options in the general vicinity, it will suffice. There is a decent mix of holes, though most are wooded (some heavily). Love it and Hate it 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 8, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is huge change of pace from the others in the area.

Thick wooded holes - Extremely challenging tight holes that will no doubt force you to work on your "get out of troutble" shots. In some cases it can be ridiculously thick, bordering a luck course but overall it is fun in a painful way.

There are multiple tees on each hole to make things even more interesting. Most notably 7 and 13 over the water holes.

Cons:

There are no real fairways on most ot the holes. That makes it unique but a bit much.

Pleanty of opportunities to lose a disc. The brush can get very thick and if you end up in the murky waters of the marsh you can kiss that disc good bye.

Navigation can be awful for a first timer, you can plan on a lot of wasted time finding your way around on your first time.

Bugs, bugs, bugs = bring the spray.

Other Thoughts:

Overall it is an enjoyable course that has a lot of potential but as is the cons outweigh the pros.

I enjoy this course because it is a total change of pace and it enjoyable in a glutton for punishment kind of way. However this is not a place to bring friends to introduce to disc golf and can be very frustrating for all levels of players.

It is a fun place to play on the occasional visit however it would drive me crazy if this was my home course.
