Very good beginner course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

A very good beginner course with interesting elevation changes, plenty of wind and beautiful views. All targets are easily seen from the tees. The course is very well maintained being on a ball golf course so the possibility of losing a disc is remote. A good quality scorecard with an aerial view of the course is provided.

Cons:

I played in July which is the off-season and the rate was $7.00 (2016) for seemingly unlimited play. Trees provide a very modest hazard at best.

Other Thoughts:

This was a fun course to play. I generally play courses that are very obstructed by trees and have no wind. This was a nice change as the course is not obstructed by trees and thus narrow fairways and I was schooled by the wind on several occasions.

Mediocre disc golf... IN PARADISE!! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 26, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-You're in FREAKING PARADISE! Incredible views of the ocean, majestic mountains that shoot up from the sea, perfect climate, and amazing flora and fauna. I saw two deer, two iguanas, a weasel, and pelicans in less than 2 hours of playing.
-Easy to find the course and easy to direct a cabbie there (tell them the Reef Golf Course/Condominiums on the east side of the island near Duggan's Restaurant)
-Easy to see the first tee and basket from the main entrance/parking lot of the course
-Two sets of tees per hole (for most of them)
-Awesome gold and silver conch shells mark the tees and add character
-Nice signs for each hole listing distances and how to find the next basket
-9 very nice, new baskets that catch well and have flags on top
-Very good use of the topography, which makes several holes particularly fun
-The course is maintained by the staff who maintain the ball golf course, which ensures that the conditions are always mighty fine
-I spoke to Mike H. (who runs the course) and although he was not on site, he explained via phone everything I needed to know to get to the course. Thanks, Mike!!

Cons:

-The course is a bit too open and easy. I played three rounds from the long tees and didn't throw a single bogey and I only had a distance driver. I threw multiple birdies every round (and I'm not that good). Many holes do not have a single obstacle. Most long tees are less than 300 feet and the short tees are closer to 200 feet. On the plus side, there are several good ace runs.
-The walks between holes are too long and can leave you unsure that you're going the right way. The signs help, but not enough. That said, I never got lost, but I was unsure if I was going the right way numerous times.
-A couple of the long tees are difficult to find. Specifically, the long tee for 4 is uphill from the short tee next to the road. And the long tee for 5 is uphill in the grass from the short tee.
-Some holes play too close to the road, the golf course, and breakable objects. The ace run on six requires you to come within inches of a lamp post. The course might get pulled after an accident or two. The day I was there, the ball golf course was closed and there was hardly any traffic and no one else was using the grounds.
-Hole 9 finishes about a 7 minute walk from where the course starts.

Other Thoughts:

While the golf is nothing special, the experience of playing here is completely magical. I found myself looking out at the ocean numerous times feeling absolutely giddy knowing that I was playing the only disc golf course for hundreds of miles in any direction. Playing disc golf on a tropical island is not an experience many people will have in their lives. Even if the course is just so-so, the experience is an exciting adventure that will put a huge smile on the face of any disc golfer. It's a very memorable experience and something that I will treasure as I look back on my disc golf career. If you're on St. Croix and you play disc golf, you should come here.

Breaking down my rating, I'd give the course a 2.0 if it were in located on a typical plot in my home state of Massachusetts. But the rush I got playing here was like being at Maple Hill. So I've decided to average a 2.0 for the golf with a 5.0 for the experience, resulting in a 3.5.

I was in St. Croix for only 8 hours as I stopped here on a cruise. From the port in Frederiksted, it costs $8 to take a shuttle to Christiansted. Then I paid $20 for a cab ride to the course, $20 for a cab ride back to Christiansted, and $8 more for the shuttle ride back to the cruise. If you're here while cruising, you have plenty of time to get to the course and enjoy it. I played for 2 hours and this was enough time. And I felt like it was worth the $60 I paid in fares and tips. Again, it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you how much it costs to play the course because it was "closed" the day I went (although Mike told me I was welcome to play regardless). Mike said that discs are available for rent when the course is open. Also, since the course was closed, I cannot say how the ball golf would impact your disc golf round (or vise versa). Hole 3 plays along the back edge of the driving range. Holes 8 and 9 play through ball golf holes, which could lead to injuries or disgruntled golfers. Maybe everyone gets along just fine, but there is definitely potential for things to go wrong.

Navigational tips:
-After hole 1, walk up the path to the left to find hole 2.
-After hole 2, walk a long way down the driving range to hole 3.
-After hole 4, walk up the road to the left to find hole 5.
-After hole 5, walk up the road all the way up the hill to find hole 6.
