Straight, sandy, thorns, wind. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 4, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Course is fairly level with a lot of holes between 240 and 330 ft. If you can reach 330' off the tee you have a shot to birdy over half the holes, and at 290' you still have a good 3-4 chances per round of 18.
If there is snow, course is great and bring dogs. If the snow melts, course is good because the sandy soil dries very quickly - it is not muddy like some other courses. So great during / after snow or rain.
No real consequence to missing wide off the tee - there is nothing to hit. Distance is really all that matters. So, good for beginners.
Light traffic / use means you rarely have to wait.
There are a few holes at 350'+ and one at 486' - not many courses around have a really long hole. It's still a par 3 but that's not easy to do given the necessary length of the second shot.

Cons:

When snow is gone, don't bring a dog - too many thorns.
Wind is a con, but it's generally not too windy. However, if you want to learn to throw into a decent headwind or with a side breeze this is a good course.
The straightness of the holes is a bit boring, since you don't need a hyzer literally ever, unless to combat wind.

Other Thoughts:

Considering just on my own making the course more zig-zag by saying "you have to play outside that tree". There are a few trees but nothing that ever interferes with play. Could use them to make a "must throw left of this" and thereby mix it up a bit.

Beware of Goat Heads! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Practice basket
- Bike rack
- Nice course map with easy navigation
- Dedicated disc course
- Concrete tees
- Nice tee signage
- Trees are growing
- Fairways are mowed giving some OB
- 1-9 finishes at the parking lot
- Easy bag off I-25.
- You almost always have the course to yourself.

Cons:

- GOAT HEADS!
- Hot course in the summer with no shade.
- Only one basket location.
- Repetitive holes
- The trees don't really add to the challenge
- Open fields get very windy on the Front Range.

Other Thoughts:

- Kudos to the town of Firestone for installing a dedicated DG course across the street from a large housing development.

- Goat Heads are everywhere on this course during Puncture Vine season. Open toe shoes or sandals are HIGHLY discouraged. Even thin-soled shoes can be an issue. Please leave your dog at home if you must play this course...they'll thank you later.

- The trees are growing up, but it doesn't seem like they will add much interest even when fully grown. They line the fairways like a ball-golf course adding separation to some of the fairways, but add no challenge to the basket. It feels like a missed opportunity. Also, they are only on the front 9. The back is just flat field

- Hole 9 finishes at the parking lot which offers a reprieve from the heat if you decide to just play the first 9.

- Final Thoughts? I really want to like this course. I've played here quite a few times trying to find some redeeming qualities. However, with the goat head issue and repetitive 300' straight holes it's hard to give this more than a 1.5. The town put in some effort and it shows, but there is only so much you can do with a hot, dry and dusty field.

New Course Needs Time to Mature 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a new course with brand new tee pads and new Chainstar baskets. The park seems to be dedicated to only disc golf and there is a lot of open area for multiple pin locations. The course was installed on a hay grass field but it appears there is grass seed planted to I would expect a nice park grass in the future. The course is mowed and the middle of the fairway is a bit shorter and makes it easy to navigate by following the shorter grass to the next tee. Most of the tee pads for the next hole are visible from the basket.

The front 9 has new trees 50+ planted that are around 15 feet high and will make some nice obstacles as the grow, but right now they are not very big and easy to throw around or over. The back 9 does not have any trees but it is very possible they will be planted soon.

Cons:

Right now there are no trees on the back 9 so there are no real obstacles. The course is very new so they do not currently have tee signs to list the distance. There is no water or real elevation change so no real challenges for shot shaping or needing to control distance of your throws. Many of the holes have roughly the same distance (around 300') with a couple of longer holes and a couple of shorter ones.

Other Thoughts:

Great to see another course installed in Northern Colorado and this could end up being a very nice course in the future as the trees grow and more are planted. On the front 9 where there are already some tress planted they are positioned well to make players shape shots to navigate and will add more challenge as they grow. Good place to go if you are working on improving your game or certain shots since it is fairly wide open and not too many players at this point. Kudo's to the city of Firestone and to all the people that helped design and get this installed in the ground. Will be nice to see how the course progresses in the months and years.
