Caught it with the fall leaves, mind blown! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 15, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Beautiful, easily accessible course and an amazing FREE service that the resort provides for disc golfers. Plenty of parking with a super short walk to tee #1.
- We caught this course during the fall leaves changing and it could not have been more beautiful playing in and out of yellow, red and orange aspens!
- Hole #1 plays over an open mountain road and is a nice preview of what is to come. Make sure you warm up first so you can really fling it and clear the road.
- A majority of the course plays cross-hill, so you are sort of contouring your way around (up hill to the left, downhill to the right) for large portions of the course. Although it gets dense off the fairway, the course is intelligently designed and it is actually pretty hard to lose a disc (with the exception of holes #16 and #17... more on that later...)
- Towards the end of the F9 you start to get into a really fun collection of holes that play up and down across a large gully, shooting over and across a bend in the mountain road. (sorry I don't remember the exact #s on those holes...) This collection of shots was really fun as you could let your drives fly across open space and easily spot where you disc would lay. This collection of shots ends with a downhill/crosshill shot towards a covered deck area that looks like it is used for concessions during ski season. The covered deck creates a U-shaped sort of backing for the green which is fun, and this is a little spot where you can catch some shade and relax for a minute. No smoking per course rules.
- Some of the holes play slightly uphill and by the time you reach the final 6-7 holes, you will have gained enough elevation to enjoy some longer, open downhill shots. Holes #15, 18 and 19 were really fun and you could let go of precision a bit and crank some beautiful drives.
- Yes, you read correctly, this is a 19 hole course!

Cons:

The main things that kept this course from receiving a 4 or 4.5 rating from me were holes #16 and #17. Not sure what went on here with these holes, but they have absolutely no fairway and you are all but guaranteed to lose at least one disc between these two holes. These are long, downhill shots into super dense trees, blind landing areas so you really don't stand a chance. I think these were just too ambitious, and course designers should consider shortening the hole distance or trimming out a fairway... considering the trickiness of cutting down trees in a ski area, shortening the pin placement may be the way to go...
Just to drive the point home, while I was looking for one of my lost discs, I managed to find two other lost discs that were not my own... definitely a bermuda triangle :)

Me and my friend agreed that if we played this course again, we would skip these two holes.

Other Thoughts:

Thanks Steamboat! After play, try snagging a burger at backdoor grill.

Well Designed Ski Slope Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 30, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is the best executed "ski resort" course that I've played.

Good variety of hole lengths from the 151' Hole 10 with the basket tucked back into a grove of trees to the downhill 606' Hole 18 that lets you air it out. There was a good distribution of hole lengths between these extremes.

Nice use of the elevation to create a variety of uphill, downhill, and cross hill shots. Nothing that I would consider extreme but most holes had an element of elevation to add challenge.

Good flat rubber tee pads for every hole. They aren't large, but there is a good flat area behind and beside them for those that use a run-up.

Simple but effective tee signs include a useful hole diagram, distance and par. There were also a number of "next tee" type signs that helped with navigation.

Decent gravel parking lot at the base of the course, with an uphill walk to the first tee that gets you warmed up!

Cons:

Like much of the Rockies this area has lost most of their Lodgepole Pines to beetles. So this is not the forest type course that I'd expect at a Rocky Mountain Ski Resort. That being said, the designers did a great job of working with what remained.

A few holes have more than one basket visible from the tee and others have a blind basket. So this could be confusing to first-timers.

A few of the baskets have seen better days and are single chain, but they catch fine.

There is a lot of low re-growth on the course that can make finding your disc challenging.

Other Thoughts:

I was lucky enough to meet up with DGCR member "bobmcnelly" (Jordan) who was a huge help with lines to the basket, spotting throws, and general course info. Give him a shout if you're in the area.

Its not the old thunderhead, but they have kept it great. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great signage (both tee signs and navigation)
Good teepads (with brooms)
Beautiful views
Good variety of shots needed. I threw putters, mids and drivers regularly off the tee. Also threw backhand, forehand and thumbers regularly. Every hole presents its own challenge.
Excellent use of the elevation, throwing up, down and across.
Basket placements were good, they forced a line often even when the fairway could allow others.

Cons:

I have to stretch to find anything to critique.

No real "ski slope" bomb shots you expect on a resort course.
18 is close, but doesn't have the extreme elevation change I associate with these courses (not to say this course doesn't use the elevation exceptionally well)

All holes play par 3, there were no holes that forced me to play the fairway as opposed to go for the pin. (including 600'+ 18 which is fairly reachable due to slope, I got lucky and pulled it off during league)

This course used to have twice the trees. They have altered the old layout to make great use of what trees are still there, its just hard to forget some of the natural fairways there used to be. The new layout flows even better as well.

A couple baskets could use some maintenance or updating.

If you are not in great shape, it is somewhat of a hike.

Pretty long drive for anyone but locals. (but worth it)

Other Thoughts:

Be aware of your surroundings, there are a few bee hives and some sketchy places you may find your lie.

I would not miss this one, and it may even be worth the day trip from the front range just to play. I put it up there with the best courses in the front range mountains, but this is better because you are unlikely to wait on every hole, or have a group throwing in on you like you may find elsewhere.

There are very few courses I have played that I would rather play more.

exhausting but worth it! 2+ years drive by

Pros:

the flat rubber tee pads are really nice. especially the brooms on every tee pad. the signs on every tee pad is a nice touch to the course. excellent terrain diversity. some up, some down, and some flat. there are arrows next to every basket telling you were the next tee pad is.

Cons:

no water system in the bathroom. the bushes on every hole are annoying. you can not find your disc on a bunch of holes. there is a long walk to hole 1.

Other Thoughts:

the course is exhausting. do not come by yourself. you need spotters. bring extra watter.

Disc Golf!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 14, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Disc Golf is back in the boat! Elevation change and great views create a disc golf and hiking experience mixed into one. The trail systems between holes are amazing. The level rubber teepads a lot to a mountain course. The signage between holes has greatly improved since opening. Much easier to navigate if you have never played. Mixed distance of holes to draw interest for all caliber golfers.

Cons:

Baskets need to be upgraded ASAP. Brush off to the sides of the fairways will continue to need work each year but are already looking better after one season.

Other Thoughts:

Be aware of bikers and hikers while on the course. Check out https://www.facebook.com/SteamboatGolfers for local updates!

What a hike! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Excellent hole design with a good array of both uphill and downhill shots. Baskets are well kept even though they are temporary due to the short season which the course is open. If you're into hiking this is the best hike I've taken in Colorado thus far on a disc golf course, the calves definitely would shape up nicely after a month or two of this one.

Cons:

Excellent hole design loses some of it's luster when you can't find the next hole. Absolutely ZERO tee signs, distance markers, or arrows to the next box. I only found my way around by following paths of half trampled grass. Some of the tee boxes are so short you can't even take two steps into your drive. Try throwing 330 up hill with only two steps. The rough is extremely thick and EATS discs, but that's not so much a con as an observation.

Other Thoughts:

Loved the holes, hated the navigation but the holes were so good that the course still deserves a good rating, because once you know the course, navigating it isn't an issue anymore.

True Mountain Golf Design 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 4, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Awesome design and a true representation of mountain golf. Holes from 175 ft to 550. Plays evenly to right and left handed players. Contains Open (Mowed ski runs) and wooded holes. Equal distribution of uphill and downhill holes. Located at a mid mountain area, you are away from the base area crowds and unlike other courses on Ski Mountains you dont have to payto ride a lift.
Steamboat is a super chill town on the West slope of the Rockies guaranteeing ridiculous views and sunsets that will amaze you.
Frequent sightings of Black Bear, Moose, Fox and Elk are common - help the course out and give right of way to them. The future of this magnificent place is contingent upon a good relationship with the players and the wildlife and the mountain - Respect them all and PACK IT OUT.
For information on Steamboat Disc Golf, Check out the Steamboat Area Disc League at Steamboatdisc.com
They are cool and they are the ones that make it all happen. All baskets were supplied by the club and all course design and construction was completed by the club.

Cons:

It took long enough for Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp to let Steamboat Area Disc League build a World Class Course. Its about time SSRC.

Other Thoughts:

Steamboat Area Disc League is making huge headway with the Mountain. Check out PDGA's "Adventure Course" in 2009 Guidebook....FRONT PAGE

Pros:

EXERTING! Thunderhead course will work you ! Especially if you aren't acclimated. I lived in Steamboat for a few years and played this course on a regular. BRING WATER YES! Many of the holes are open ski runs. Its a good 50% downhill (first half) and 50% uphill (second half)
This is Mt Golfing at its BEST.
If your looking for a 2-3 hour hike/golf this is the course for you!

Dirt Tees yes, with good reason, its a ski mountain and needs no more concrete poured on it.

Cons:

Short season, but beggars cannot be choosers.
The rough is ROUGH, littered with bushes and trees.
Steamboat is open to Mt. Bikers during the summer so be weary of downhill rippers while crossing cat tracks.

Other Thoughts:

PACK IT IN PACK IT OUT!!!

Drinking and Smoking is legit as long as your legit. This is a very big, lush mountain. Please help keep it that way! The locals do!

There are no plaques other then the sign to the trail. However the course is clearly marked from Tee to Tee.
I learned how to play at this course and cannot thank it enough!!
Peace

Cons:

Not very well marked, the air can make you dizzy, dirt tees.

Bring water, be ready to be tired afterwards, take breaks, stay on the fairway on the big downhill shots.
