Willard Bay State Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Pelican Beach DGC is a new 9 hole disc golf course put in by NUDGA located in Willard Bay State Park at the Pelican Beach Campground. Willard Bay is a giant freshwater reservoir carved off of the Great Salt Lake and provides water for the northern valley. The state park is comprised of two separate marinas, one on the south and one on the north. The Pelican Beach Campground is located in the Northern Marina but at the southernmost tip. The disc golf course actually plays off the southern tip of what is marked as a reserveable "group area," not the Pelican Beach parking lot, but it is just a short walk south over to it past the restrooms. The course starts out playing under some large olives and down a bush enclosed road before going out into much more open field scrub grass. The good sized concrete tees are marked by wooden stumps with custom signs that have the hole number, map, and length, although I do have to say the signs look like they are going to bleach out over time rather quickly. The signs don't list par but my guess is that all holes are par 3 with the possible exception of the 625' Hole 7, possible par 4? Most of the holes have decent lengths with only one hole less than 300 feet.

Cons:

Price. $10 on weekdays Mon-Thurs, $15 on weekends Fri-Sun. Obviously there is a lot to do on the lake and if you were camping here, but if you were just playing disc golf that's pretty steep for this type of course, I would expect more for the money.

Rough. If you miss the fairways here you might find yourselves in quite a bit of trouble as this stuff is thick and nasty.

Flat. No elevation change at all.

Open. A large portion of the holes are flat and open, and as long as you can stay in the fairway fairly easy to get par on.

Field Grass. Most of the course plays in open scrub grass fields which can definitely get tall enough to hide discs. Although to the clubs credit the fairways were very nicely mowed and defined when we were there, but I know from personal experience keeping up with the maintenance on this can be exhausting, time will tell if this becomes a problem.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of those difficult to pin down type of courses. It has a good mix of shots, but there isn't a whole lot of challenge here, once you learn the lines most of this course is very wide open. The first couple holes provide a little more challenge as the bushes and trees make more shot shaping, but I didn't like Hole 2 as it was a blind shot over some very thick brush to a basket that had been cleared, but without knowing where you're throwing there is a lot of room for error and lost discs. I liked playing the course it's a decent enough course but I don't think I would ever want to pay $15 or even $10 to play again; there is just too many other courses that offer the same or more for free.
