Par 2 Paradise

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 2, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- some moderate wooded challenge on holes 1-3
- nicely maintained park with typical park amenities
- practice basket
- decent, but not huge, concrete tees
- Innova DISCatcher baskets in good shape
- full color tee signs with maps
- good, fun course for beginners with some obstacles
- disc golf area is isolated from other park activities
- some nice mature trees on property add a bit of shot shaping
- straightforward navigation

Cons:

- safety hazards, particularly on holes 1-3
- very short; some holes are just too easy
- limited technical challenge
- completely flat and no real uniqueness

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed Oak Ridge Park overall, though it is by no means a destination course. The biggest con here is definitely safety; hole 2 throws right back at the tee for hole 1, and when I was playing the next group cleared off the hole 1 tee so I could throw the next hole. This is the only other group I saw on the course, so most days, this probably won't impact anyone - but it's a terrible design. The tee for 3 is also too close to the hole 2 basket, creating another safety hazard. Finally, hole 6 throws back towards the hole 4 basket, which also creates a hazard.

Despite the safety issues, the layout isn't too bad in terms of navigation. While flat and fairly open, the course does have some moderately formed fairways on holes 1-3 in the woods. However, the vast majority of holes here are VERY short. This is the only course I think I've been to that actually states par 2 for several holes. In fairness, some of the holes are so short that par 3 really does seem generous.

The amenities here are decent for a park style 9 hole course, with decent baskets and tees as well as a practice basket, which isn't always included on 9 hole courses. This would be a good place to take beginners who don't have any real power yet but are ready for some obstacles instead of completely flat and open. More than half of the course is still pretty flat and open, but allows you to test out just a bit more power. The wooded holes are much shorter and a good, gentle introduction to what disc golf can be. I certainly wouldn't go out of my way for this course, but it's a quick, casual round if you're just looking for some fun.

Good practice 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Short course, perfect for beginners. Love coming here for a quick game and get practice, or refresher, on my mid-range to short game. Quiet little park in early spring or late fall, can be a bit muddy early in the year. Holes #4-#9 are open with minimal obstacles.

Cons:

Imagine this park can get busy in the summer in turn hard to play a quick nine holes. #1-#3 a little tricky for newbies since it is a wooded section of the course.

Other Thoughts:

As mentioned previous, nice 9 holes to shake off the rust on your arm or refocus

Dinkers, Dial Ins And Drives 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.868 Rating) A novice level shorty course where the local rec player will have a goal to break into the teens.
- FUN FACTOR - For the average Joe, this is going to be a fun local course. Lots of ace and birdie potential for rec players considering the short holes and high quality baskets. There is some substantial overgrowth on the sun-bleaches edges, but most holes have bail-out space.
- CHAINS - DISCatcher baskets, need I write more.
- TEES - Excellent tees for a short course. 4 feet by 12 feet and concrete. All of them were in excellent condition.
- NAVIGATION - Very good. Detailed course map near tee (1). High quality tee signage with next tee direction or pad indicated. Intuitive transitions.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - Not a perfect beginner's course, but close. Again, short distances, but new players will end up in some thicket occasionally as there is some moderate overgrowth on 4 holes.
- QUICK PLAY - Figure 25 minutes for a quick solo and 45 minutes for a skilled four-some.
- MAINTENANCE - The course was mowed, clean and had trimmed up lanes for my appearance.

Cons:

Small footprint course issues.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE -Too short for higher skilled players and they would likely rate this course lower than I have. If played as a par 27, the difficulty is Novice level and an even par I estimate would deliver an 800 to 825 rated round. The little difficulty that is here is all technical based. The first two lines in the beginning of the course are 10 to 15 feet wide. I only used my driver once on (9).
- PAR 2s - 4 shots are sub 175 feet, of which 3 of these are listed as par 2s. Hole (3) is an unsatisfying dinker listed at 73 feet long.
- SPACING - The 9 hole layout is crammed into an extremely tight space. There was another two-some on the course while I was here and there was some waiting between us. Discs will land in other fairways.
- UNIQUENESS - Due to the short course length and small park space, there was not enough here, to keep me intrigued. Trees guarding and shot shaping was used well considering the site shackles, but it won't wow anyone who's played 10 courses. No water elements and the longest hole is roughly 330 feet.
- ELEVATION - I hear they flood this course with six inches of water in late December and then use it as an ice rink. I kid.... they only need an inch.

Other Thoughts:

Oak Ridge is not going to win any major awards, but for those who are newer to the sport or those that max out at 250 feet, this is going to be a very serviceable local course. I like it for what it is, a quick, clean and easy to follow niner where I could quick cross off another course and be back on the road. No reason for those beyond a 15 minute drive to come here except for baggers like me or a Chicago resident looking to play all the respectable metro courses.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - An average looking city park. Some brief woods and some mowed open spaces. This park seems to be well-maintained and well-funded.
- SPLASH PAD - I brought my 5 year old with me for this one. Having a nice splash pad was key in my decision to play here. Thank you to DGCR reviewer #19325 for pointing that out in his review.

Nice, but short. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 28, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 hole course tucked into a residential city park.

Nice concrete tees, one per hole. Plenty long, wide and grippy. Very nice touch for a small course like this.

Brand spankin' new Discatchers, all set perfectly and caught as you'd expect. One pin position per hole. Also a nice little practice basket, which probably should have been put in a different spot.

A few holes play in the woods and will at least force you to keep it somewhat on a certain line. What there is in the way of available obstacles here, were used well.

Great signage, which makes navigation a breeze.

Ace runs abound!

Cons:

This is a SHORT course. Outside of hole 9 (333', which felt completely, absolutely, almost absurdly out of place) and maybe hole 4, this is all ace runs, all the time. 73' hole? Sure, why not!

Hole 2's best line (RHFH) plays right over the tee pad for Hole 1, and you're basically shooting right into the practice basket area. Unless your name is Killy McKillerson, this probably isn't ideal.

Overly errant shots could end up in the fenced in yard adjacent to the course, which could happen on a course that's this beginner-friendly.

Other Thoughts:

This is certainly not a world championship caliber course, but that's not what it's supposed to be. For a beginner-friendly course in a residential area, it suits its purpose just fine. Kids, beginners and grandparents will have a blast here. Others will just get a chance to run aces, which isn't so bad.

Not worth going out of your way for, but there's worse ways to spend a half hour.

Recreational Short Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Oak Ridge Park is located in a very small but nice neighborhood park. The land is very flat and plays mostly in the open.

Brand new Innova Dispatcher baskets. There is a practice basket near #1.

The Signage is very good.

Concrete tees were installed correctly.

The course is easy to navigate.

New players will be introduced to the game.

New clean restrooms located near #1.

Cons:

Several holes place very close to each other and near neighbors yards.

There is one hole that is 73 feet!!!

For more experienced players this course is pretty easy and boring.

Other Thoughts:

There is a very nice splash park near hole #1. If you have a family it's a good way to sneak in a round.

This course is not worth traveling too.
