Pros:
1) Beautiful lake course with stunning views, nearby camping, roughly 35 minutes northwest of Emporia. This course is immaculately manicured, with tall grass purposefully left as clean looking OB lines (and my preferred way to use OB in open fields from a visual perspective).
2) Very clean park, free of trash and limb debris despite being pretty busy both times we visited. There are bathrooms on site and I spotted a few port-o-johns as we played along. Trash cans in a couple locations and a bench or two here and there. Not on every hole, but I never really felt like they were needed on each hole.
3) Large 4' x 8' textured concrete tee pads, new Red White and Blue Veteran baskets, and like other area course nice full color tee signs with hole map and OB information. Top notch DD course amenities as always.
4) Lightly wooded course with wonderful use of mild to moderate elevation changes. Very few purely flat holes and when there are, they are forced shot shapes with tight OB and trees.
5) Despite skirting the lake for several holes, there is no real water in play unless you heavily shank a shot in a direction way away from the intended hole design.
6) Challenging design without being overbearing on either difficultly or distance. The course smartly uses a mild challenge design that can increase severely with wind off the lake, while not being a birdie or die course when the wind is calm.
7) Mostly par 3's with 3 par 4's and 1 par 5 on the course, all varying in distance and difficultly. From a play standpoint it feels like the course gradually but fairly increases in difficulty as you progress. Plenty of birdie looks, especially early on the front 9 and give way to longer more technical holes on the back 9.
8) Very well defined holes, usually with trees lining fairways, or tall grass OB lining the intended length and direction of the hole. Makes navigation and throwing towards hidden baskets very intuitive.
9) Several memorable holes 13 (a relatively short Par 5) but uphill and extremely tight fairway with tall grass OB roughly 60 feet wide the hole way down. You tee blind up onto a hill and hope to land safe, then have to expertly navigate a spotting of trees on either side of the fairway that can block the hyzer lines from either side. All to get to a well guarded green inside a cluster of trees. Hole 16 (a risk/reward short Par 4) is reachable from the tee, but is an island green and the island is smaller than circle 1. There is a copious landing zone short of the green which will leave you a short putter approach if you aren't risking landing the green from the tee. And Hole 18, a very nice demanding finishing hole which has been described below by another reviewer.
10) I have played this course twice, both times with winds at or over 25 mph sustained. And despite that, I still had a blast at this course. A lot of people don't enjoy playing bad and then blame the course for part of it. But I still thoroughly enjoyed it and blame myself for my poor shots in the wind, not the course.
Cons:
1) There are a few holes where proximity is or can be an issue, especially on windy days where discs can flip over unexpectedly. While none of the holes really share the same fairway space, there are several that run parallel and are only separated by a few small trees.
2) There are a few holes close to the road and close to places where park users may be fishing. Nothing too extreme, but it would be a good idea to keep an eye out for others using the grounds while playing your round.
3) Navigation should be intuitive for most, and there are arrows painted to help you through the more difficult to navigate parts of the wooded holes on the back 9, but there are holes where you can not see the next tee pad/basket and you may miss the next arrows. There are some pre-existing older concrete paths from whatever this was before disc golf was installed that can be confusing. Not a huge con, but just something to be aware of if you are directionally challenged.
4) The wind truly is a factor here. It is amplified by the openness of the lake and if you do not enjoy playing in high winds, this course can be extremely frustrating if you decide to visit on a rather windy day.
5) Without the wind this course offers only a small Recreational level challenge. Too much for beginners and too easy for seasoned advanced players. Not a course I would bring a new player to.
Other Thoughts:
Kanza View is a very solid enjoyable disc golf course. It is a beautiful setting, has some challenging and unique shots for the area, and is a solid place to visit if you like relaxing by the lake in its own right. Had I not came back to play a Flex event I probably wouldn't have driven back here from Emporia to play this course again, but I am definitely glad that I played it at least once. This course is definitely worth at least one visit but probably not a destination course on its own.
