Dam cool scenery 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Course Maintenance 10/10. The course is in a state park and is very well maintained. It's always been clean and well mowed when I've been, and there are facilities on site.

Use of Obstacles 9/10. This course does a great job of using a variety of different obstacles (trees, OB roads, creeks, the lake). Slight knock for not avoiding camping shelter on 15 and 16.

Baskets/Tees 9/10. DD Baskets in good condition. Tees are concrete but are wearing out and not very gritty. Also could be a little larger for the longer holes at least.

Finding Discs 8/10. Finding discs should be pretty easy for the most part. Pretty high chance of losing a disc over the lake on 13, and a slight chance if you happen to go long on 12.

Comfort 7/10. No rough to speak of, grass is short, and there's a decent amount of shade. Could use some more benches. A few holes are tightly packed and you might have to watch out of other players, and a couple on the back there could be families there camping/picnicking

Navigation on holes 7/10. Despite no tee signs, it's generally pretty easy to tell where the basket is from the tee. The lack of elevation means there are very few blind shots (only a couple hidden behind trees).

Variety of Shot Paths 6/10. There aren't many holes with a significant doglet, but with the way the creek/roads and the lake are used, it will definitely benefit players who can throw left to right or right to left.

Variety of openness 6/10. The course is generally on the open side. A couple of holes have only 1 or 2 trees with an OB road/creek. There are still a few holes with lines to hit though.

Decisionmaking required 6/10. The half of the holes that do have some more trees do a good job of providing multiple routes to the basket. Good risk reward with throwing over the lake on 13 and going for an ace run on 15 with OB road behind.

Cons:

Elevation 1/10. Extremely flat for the most part. There is a ridge up to the road that acts as a backstop on hole 15 and makes 16 slightly downhill. The only other elevation comes from the ditch of the OB creek.

Variety of distances 4/10. A vast majority of holes are right around 300-350. There are some exceptions. Hole 7 is a bomber hole as a legit 700ft par 4, and 18 is a long par 3 at 440ft. Holes 11 and 15 are on the shorter side and give good ace run opportunities.

Navigation between holes 5/10. Tough to find the next tee at times, especially when crossing the road is involved. Make sure to bring a course map or take a picture at the start.

Alternate pins 5/10. Holes 15 and 18 have no alternates, 4 holes have 3 total placements, and the rest have 2. Several of the alternate placements that are there are pretty good, with a couple duds.

Challenging all levels 5/10. This is a really good course for beginners, with the exception of holes 7 and especially 13. Advanced players should expect a lot of birdie chances with mids off the tee.

Other Thoughts:

Overall Challenge 4/10
More Precise Rating 3.053

18th basket is generally used as the practice basket, there are bricks in the ground for a putting game or more precise distance practice, which is pretty cool.

This is a fairly easy course as long as it isn't windy. I played a collegiate tournament here on a calm day and there were 2 guys tied at -12 in one singles round. The OB is in play but generally fair. There is an alternate tee for 13 if you don't want to throw over the lake.

The $5 fee is to get into the park and is good for the entire day. There is also camping on site if you're into that.

My favorite of many great courses in MHK 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 10, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Personally my favorite course in Manhattan KS, which has some really great courses.
I feel like the layout is really intuitive, each tee-pad is not far from the last basket. Perhaps there could be some better signage, but with any kind of course map, I see no way for anyone to get lost here.
This course is also just set on some beautiful property. Tuttle Creek is a nice little campground and the disc golf course weaves its way around to produce a great 2.5ish mile walk through the grounds.
Good use of the land - the creek becomes an obstacle on a few different holes. Excellent use of the existing trees.
Great variety of shots both in terms of distance and layout.
Advanced players with really big arms should have the ability to birdie most holes on a good day, but there are plenty of obstacles to get in the way. I could see the top level advanced players thinking this course easy, but fun. For beginner and intermediate players this is medium difficulty course.
The course is well-maintained, and there's not a lot of places for you to lose your disc *IF* you avoid the water (see below in cons). No really nasty brush to deal with, unless you go crazy OB into the long grass on 4 and 5.
Bathrooms available right when you start.
Plenty of parking.
The course drops you off right where you begin, which is great for parking.

Cons:

The biggest con for this course is always the wind. If I see my weather app tell me there will be 15+ MPH of wind I tend to just head to other area courses instead, because 15MPH of wind feels like 45 when it's whipping over the dam and forcing itself down into the little valley where this course lies.
Plenty of opportunities for missing discs due to water. Hole 13 plays over the lake, and when the trees have leaves it's a pretty tricky shot to make it over. You can always play from the alternate teepad for that hole, but it's much longer and more annoying.

Other Thoughts:

If you live in Kansas, you should get the KS states parks pass, which prevents you from having to pay the 5$ each time here. I have never actually seen anyone out enforcing the 5$ charge when the front entrance isn't manned, but am told they will ask you for it if you are parked there without the pass.
The basket that most people use as a practice basket is actually hole 18's basket. You can see across the road near the campers there is a little practice basket for real, but I've never seen anyone use it.
This course is a great course for players of all skill levels, in a really safe, beautiful, well-maintained park.
Also, shout out to the camp steward lady who helped me walk the fairway around hole 18 looking for my missing cell phone. You da' real MVP.
Takes me about an hour and a half to play the course.

Course getting a tweek, needs a full make over. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 11, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

You can see the white baskets from a long way away as you drive up to the course. It builds anticipation.

Beautiful white Dynamic Disc baskets in great shape.

7 1/2 foot long concrete tees

The camp sites are very affordable, high quality, and have great views. Plenty to do at the park for non disc golfers, or a mall just minutes away.

The camp store has about 14 discs for sale.

Cons:

No tee signs. This may be because of the changing layout, but it does not look like there was ever tee signs. This makes the tees very hard to find and makes navigation a nightmare.

Several holes are risky or just plain unsafe.
1. plays uncomfortably close to the main entrance road.
2. Plays along entrance road and finishes towards the road.
6. plays close to road and towards it
7. Most rewarding fairway plays directly over road.
8. one of 3 possible routes plays over the road
10. Basket by road (not busy with traffic, but busy walking path)
11. was completely unplayable. Tents were set up in the fairway next to a busy pavillion
14. Tee is 20 feet from Shelter 3. not as much a safety hazard, but you have to walk up to the group in the shelter and it is very uncomfortable having everyone wonder why you are 20 feet from their party.
18 Finishes very close to the parking lot. I was uncomfortable going for it in the wind and had to lay up. and play very safe since several car owners were watching me throw directly at their vehicles.

BASKET 12 IS GONE. Even if it was there, the location was so muddy, smelly, and disgusting I would not have played it.

TEE 13 was under 2 full inches of mud and BASKET 13 IS GONE.

15 TEE UNDERWATER, literally. There are 2 sticks stuck in the ground as a temporary tee.

Hole 17 throws over water with no way to cross except walk back to hole 5.

$5 to wander around the park looking for the next basket and working your way backwards to the most obvious spot to find the hidden tee. If you leave and return, you need to wait in line. The guy in the booth will run out of the booth and chase you if you try to drive around and skip the line. Watching him scream at motorists was almost humorous enough to be in the PRO section.

Other Thoughts:

I was staying at Tuttle Park just minutes from the course and I refused to play it again during my stay. I heard the course is getting a facelift, but It needs more than just a relocation of 2 baskets. Tee markers or Tee signs are vital. With a redesign of holes 12 and 13 and replacement of those baskets (not sure where they can fit), along with quality tee signs, I would give this course a 3.5. The safety hazards are simply too many to overlook.

Good for Distance Drives 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Easy to follow layout for the most part. Many of the holes were fairly straight forward, and wouldn't overwhelm someone who's new. Much different type of course than warner park. A lot of the holes required long distance shots than hooking around trees, or throwing at elevation. Basically if you can bomb a disc far this course will favor you.

Cons:

The simplicity can be a con depending on how you look at it. A creek also goes through part of it , after a good rain (or snow when I played it), it can fill up with water. On top of this it gets very muddy and difficult to retrieve discs. Some of the holes are also 700+ feet, but there aren't much obstacles. However if you can't throw far, this might put you at a disadvantage. Finally you have to pay to enter the park which kind of stinks. Being our first time and coming from out of town me and my friend somehow got in without paying, but I wouldn't recommend trying this.

Other Thoughts:

After a brutal round at Warner Park, this was a nice change of pace. The course is open and there isn't much in the way, but some of the holes are the biggest that I've ever thrown. Make sure you got a good high speed driver for this course.

Cons:

Flat and can be hard to navigate if you are unfamiliar. Due to construction (in 2010) there is no basket for #6.

Cross the street after #5 (or #6 if it is there) to find #7 tee pad. Also, cross after #9 to find #10 tee pad.

Hucking at Tuttle Puddle 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 31, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Simply said, this park is beautiful. I've been going to this park for years and have always loved it, so I'm a bit biased. As for the DG course, what's not to like, it makes up for what it lacks.

For instance, the distance is awesome. It starts out short and simple on 1-3 and the pars are easy to get. From there on through the 700 ft monster at 7 it's all about power.

Number 4 is behind a huge cedar and can make for a tough par 3 unless you have some serious snap.

On 5 you must shoot the gap between two massive Cottonwoods with a massive RHBH anhyzer to stay away from a nasty tree about 150 ft out on the right hand side.

7...well... it's long. If you throw a strong hyzer regularly it's easy to get into trouble with trees so stay closer to the road. If the basket is in the furthest position, you're a seriously awesome hucker if you get a 3.

9 is by the little fenced in power station. I usually throw a big anhyzer with my putter over it rather than try to shoot the 10ft gap between the two trees 60ft out. (The tree on the right is called the dead man's tree because...it's dead, but mainly because you'll think that you're about to get through and a virtually invisible twig will knock you down.)

12 has water 25 ft behind the basket and when you're already geared up to bomb your drives it's easy to overshoot.

13 is over a couple hundred feet of water and is famous for swallowing disc...the trees hang over the water so if you throw into the trees, down it goes into the drink. You can always swim for it if you don't mind the fish cleaning station being right there to ad such great fragrance and color. If you play it safe and stay over grass the south wind blowing hard through the gap in the trees will pushing your upshot/putts around, so beware.

15 offers the only elevation...about a 10 ft rise to a basket by the road. From there out its all about the bomb. 16 is a chance to show that huge roller or massive anhyzer if you've got it pegged.

There's 3 drainage creeks that come into play throughout the course as well, and they're not hard to find. I play in sandals usually just for that reason.

The par is fairly easily achieved at 63. 'Pro' par is 56, so that you play every hole a 3 except for 7 and 18. If you're really hard core play it all 3. My best is 58. If you honor the OB's (roads and across/in creeks) the strokes add up quick.

Cons:

It can be hard to find the course without a map, so do some homework if you haven't been there.

The tee pads aren't marked either, so again get a map. There's usually some at the bulletin board by the parking area, if not, the park office to the north has some. The hours are 9 - 4 with a 1 hr lunch.

Other Thoughts:

FYI:
Number 3 tee box is West of the 2 basket towards the creek, you throw South from it.

Number four tee box can really be hidden in the tall grass. If number 3 is in the position where you DO NOT have to throw over the creek (East side of creek) you must back track 100 ft to that culvert and head due West into the tall grass about 50 ft. Once you get close you'll see it.

Number 11 tee is hard to find also, once again it's basically due West from the 10 basket ACROSS the road by the big pole shelter and you throw South towards the pond from there.

Number 14 tee is north from 13 basket by the concrete pavilion about 300ft away.

17 is a 300 ft hike north from the 16 basket ACROSS the road and you throw back East towards the parking.

18 tee isn't easily visible from 17 basket, so head north along the creek about 100 ft to throw a nice 400 ft plus finisher between a narrow set of trees.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 19, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

At the start of the course, there is a kiosk with a map and hole info. There is also a practice basket set up for "Around the World". There is a good variation of holes on this course with lengths range from just over 200' to well over 700' and water coming into play on a handfull of them. The trees are used well and provide good obstacles and call for a variety of shots. The course flows fairly well, but I would reccomend taking a map your first time to get oriented. Bathrooms are easily accessable and parking is plentiful. I dont think I have ever waited more than 2 or 3 minutes behind another group, and have never had another group throw on me here.

Cons:

Absolutely NO elevation. One of the holes has a parking lot/ boat ramp/ dock/ cleaning station right in the middle of the fairway. There is a state park fee to park at the course for $3.70 - $4.20. On the weekends, you are likely to encounter campers on the fairways. Several holes are very close to picnic areas and shelters also. Can be very soggy after even moderate rains, so be prepared for some standing water.

Other Thoughts:

Virtually all of the cons can be easily avoided by playing weekdays or late Sundays. It is the only 18 hole course near town, also the only one with concrete tee pads.

Decent challenge wise, but has some navigation and cosmetic issues 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 30, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

At over 6000' , this is the best of three courses inside a Kansas state park in terms of challenge, even if it is a mostly open course. Cool 700+' bomb on Hole 7. One tricky blind water shot. There is a kiosk right by Hole 1 with a map of the course and baskets have flags on them (purple!) to make them more visible. Has decent parking near the first tee and actual bathrooms you can use on the course. A great recreational outlet for people camping at the lake. Never crowded with DG'ers, although you might have plenty of non-DG'ers to deal with on weekends.

Cons:

Terrain is flat as a pancake and as a result when there is a hard rain, there can be mud & standing water on the course, including right over some of the teepads, which are small, unimposing, and with no signage or markers hard to find. When I visited here in July, there were two teepads under water. There are also a number of spots on the course where fairways get dangerously close to non-DG amenites. The water shot on #13 has a boat ramp and fish cleaning station in the way and #16 cuts somewhat close to a cabin. Campers/picknickers sometimes pitch themselves into the line of fire not realizing there is a DGC on the grounds. Baskets are getting rusty and there are signs at the holes. Chronic construction on the dam and in the park has made some of the front nine holes near the drainage ditch (3-5) unplayable. Hopefully this will be fixed soon. Closed during a country music festival every year. Pay to play, and if you just want to play the course, not really worth it for one person unless they have money to burn, moreso for a group who can split the cost.

Other Thoughts:

Tuttle Creek can sort of befuddle you with its flatness considering the steep hills in the area surrounding it. When you see some of the land on the winding road leading into the park, you wonder why they didn't put the course there as there is some stupendous elevation in those areas. If I had a "needs some TLC" award to give out to one course in Kansas, this one would probably get it to put in some signs, and some better teepads. This course is actually free to play but there is a $4.20 ($3.70 October-March) daily vehicle fee for entering the park, usually you pay this on the honor system at a self pay booth as there is nobody at the gatehouse. If you visit this or any of the Kansas State Parks frequently, a KDWP annual pass might be the better way to go. See their website: http://www.kdwp.state.ks.us/n...rks/Park-Feesfor details. Not in the best shape, not what it could be, but still the best in the Manhattan area for the time being.

Couldn't Agree More 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 18, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice, long course; decent scenery; good course map at beginning of course; decent variety of hole locations, forcing a variety of shot-making; pretty cool "H-O-R-S-E" set-up at Hole 18, near the parking area

Cons:

One of the holes is missing; current park construction makes getting there a little more difficult (not a long-term problem, I'm guessing); no signage on the course, so it can be difficult to locate pins if you've never played; one hole that is 700+ feet (this might be a good thing, though); agree that openness can make wind a problem; pay-to-play

Other Thoughts:

The first reviewer nailed this review. I got into disc golf because it's generally inexpensive, so I don't really like having to pay to play, but $6.50 isn't too bad for a good round of golf, and you can play all day for that price.

Great Course for Airing it Out 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

At over 6000 feet this is a very long and open course. It's moderately wooded with very large trees that provide plenty of shade throughout most of the course. A stream is used nicely to provide an obstacle for 4 of the holes.

Cons:

Very few elevation changes. The open-ness can make for a very windy course. This can make it difficult to manage the needed long drives. Course is closed a few weeks every July for Country Stampede.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a fun course. If you want to practice those long drives and increasing your distance, this is the place to do it.
