Lover's Lane is loved by locals

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 3, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

WHAT TO EXPECT: Multi-use park course designed by HB Clark that caters to beginners, casuals, families, with just enough distance and bite to challenge recreational players. Well manicured, clean, and up to date park in an otherwise bland landscape.

AMENITIES: Multi-use park with massive parking lots, soccer fields, pavilions, walking trails, both modern bathrooms and port o johns, pretty much everything you would expect out of a modern park (only knock is there are zero water features). Practice basket near parking lot and hole #1 with paving stones indicating each 5 foot increment from the basket. Water fountain, picnic tables, and occassional trash cans on the course.

TEES/SIGNAGE/BASKETS: In typical HB Clark fashion he gets these right with large textured concrete tee pads, large course kiosk with map and all relevant information, full color tee signs with hole maps and all relevant information, and new Red Prodigy baskets. (I believe this course used to have Discatchers, but I can't remember 100%).

DESIGN: With mostly only sparse tall mature hardwoods scattered throughout the property, and small amounts of elevation to work with, this course does probably as good of a job as it could with what is available. There are very few 100% flat holes, but nothing that changes giant elevation either up or down. Trees are used more as a problematic nuisance if you miss your line than a clear "carve this tunnel" application due to their scarcity and how spread out they are. Two Par 3's will really jump out at you (for newer players anyways) due to their distance. Hole #1 415 feet Par 3 that plays slightly downhill and is otherwise wide open minus a tree halfway down the fairway to the left and the parking lot to the right. Hole #13 is a steady uphill the entire way 400 feet Par 3 that has two trees on the left to catch errant shots, the highway on the right, and decent sized gravel drainage area halfway up the fairway on the right that can considered OB. These holes ask a lot of new players but aren't terribly hard to Par. The rest of the course sits in that comfortable 280-325 range (all Par 3's) and are all pretty straight forward birdieable holes. There is a mix of left to right, right to left, uphill and downhill shots that break up the moneteny.

EXTRAS: Definitely a birdie or die course with just enough teeth to allow you to get yourself into trouble. Extremely well maintained, heavily used, and loved by locals. Navigation is pretty easy, but like most HB park courses, there are always tons of baskets in view from the tee at any given point. Good idea to verify the basket you are throwing to is the correct one. Very difficult to lose a disc here and a round can be played relatively quickly. Two distinct 9 hole loops that start and end at the Pavilion near the edge of the parking lot. Extremely cart (or even stroller) friendly. No overgrowth or underbrush to deal with.

Cons:

Very minor cons here:

FORCED MANDOS: There are quite a few mandos on this course that just feel like they are being used to force a shot shape and not for safety reasons. Hole #2 and Hole #9 are perfect examples of this where just barely off the tee there is a Mando left of a tree and the hole proceeds to swing hard to the right. While I'm all for offering multiple shot shapes throughout a course, forcing them in an otherwise wide open park is kinda bad feels.

REPETITIVE: There are very few deviations from the same thing over and over here. The same shot shapes are utilized (especially on the more open back 6 holes across the road), over and over. It can get extremely boring.

DIFFICULTY: Well below average for most 18 hole courses. We play this course as all Par 3's but I think there was a layout making a couple of the 375-415 footers into Par 4's. And even as an iron man course, almost every hole is a must get. Even casual players should be able to get themselves a putt on each hole (outside of two longer holes).

SAFETY: Alot of the holes are not spaced well and discs from one fairway interfere with another. There is a walking trail around the entire course and walkers can come into play often. The park is extremely busy most days and cars will park in fairways (even during tournaments...) there will be picnicers, dogs, people flying RC planes, or a combination of all sorts of things possibly going on depending on the day. The course is loved, and so is the park, so expect it to be crowded.

Other Thoughts:

Well designed and well loved basic park disc golf course. Nothing breathtaking, nothing glaringly abhorrent. It does the disc golf thing and it does it at an acceptable level. More advanced players won't be drawn here for the beauty or the challenge, but it is a convienent stop just off the interstate and quick play through. I always find myself stopping to play here with friends when traveling through Bowling Green despite it not being an overwhelmingly good course. It's probably because it is such a risk free, let em fly, be social, casual type round course. You can't get into much danger, and you can make a lot of birdies. Not quite a nature hike, but relaxing like one in a different way.

Typical Disc Golf through Big Trees 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 8, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

A basic piece of land with a basic course.

-Amenities: Concrete tees with some pitting, tee signs including a minimal map, red prodigies, practice basket, trash cans.

-Big Trees: My favorite kind for disc golf. Large oaks and maples define fairway shapes but don't create a sea of rough to struggle in.

-Navigation: Easy, despite the profusion of baskets in sight at any point on the course. The tee signs do well enough, and the flow is super easy.

-"Friendly": Easy to play, pleasant environment, hard to lose discs.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: A basic challenge working through sparse woods a la many older courses such as Brahan Springs. Holes (1)-(7) open with various elevation shots through the hardwoods in the low 300' range. Then, (8)-(11) scale back the length and, if players have warmed up to the course difficulty, could provide four straight bridies. From there, (12)-(18) stretch back out but play nearly completely open on the other side of the park road. Shapes are basic but not boring - mostly straight shots with a slight finish, but occasionally doglegs. There's a bit of elevation that is used fully.

-9 & 9: Course is designed in two loops.

Cons:

Nothing large. Lover's Lane is a fairly run-of-the-mill course.

-Holes (2)-(3): The only holes on the course that I didn't see the lines for. They require either a very powerful turnover shot or a straight crap shoot through the trees.

-Homogeneity: The major strike on Lover's Lane. It's mostly all the same. Eighteen holes from 290'-400' (with a couple exceptions) that rely on sparse trees outlining a generally straight path to a basket. The style and the scenery remain constant, and neither is striking.

-Setting: Not the most natural setting. Though I don't take off points, the scenery is all divided highway and commercial shops.

Other Thoughts:

Lover's Lane is a well-designed park that provides basic disc golf in the 300' range. It doesn't have a strong draw, but it also doesn't have issues that make you want to leave. Look at pictures of a couple of holes and you'll know what to expect from the whole thing.

The Wind Blows, The Course Doesn't 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course setup is great for a beginner/intermediate level player. There is a good mix of holes ranging from 200' to 350' with the longest hole touching 500'; you'll use every level of driver in your bag if you want to. The tee signs are all easy to follow, the course flows pretty easily from hole to hole, and there are enough trees to frustrate you a little bit. Tee boxes are sized well, and there's enough drainage rock to make some artificial OB for those willing to play it. I would probably play everything as a Par 3 instead of playing the few listed Par 4's as such, but that's not really the course's fault.

Cons:

Wind. It's really windy. Be prepared to smash your putts out there.

Other than that, the course does get a little monotonous after a while. The holes across the road didn't impress me, probably because that side has significantly lesser tree coverage than the first side (which doesn't have a ton of trees either). This is good for beginners learning the game and intermediate players trying to extend their drives and score below par, but advanced players will likely find the course a little too easy.

Other Thoughts:

I stopped here for a quick round on a drive down I-65, and I will probably do it again due to it's proximity to the expressway. I would probably rank it below Kereiakes Park in my Bowling Green Course rankings, but that would not stop me from playing here every so often.

Windy Meadows 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 29, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.616 Rating) A fairly open well manicured park.
- CHARACTER - The park has an overall good vide and has the felling of an established well-played course. There's a great community board and map posted right in front. There's a shelter, water fountain, picnic table and port-o-potty at the entrance as well. There is adequate hole signage throughout the course too. About half of the tees are shaded and there are good sized concrete tees. If I were to add something, I'd add a few more benches.
- PRACTICE AREA - like a lot of courses that get a lot of use or have a club, this one has the practice basket. However, Lover's Lane "uped the anti" on all the rest I've played by including distance pavers at the practice basket. It was my first time seeing this feature at a course.
- SHELTER - Great shelter by the an ideal junction of several tees (1,4, 6 and 10) as well as near basket (18).
- QUICK PLAY - A single should be able to complete a round in a about an hour when the course is empty. Groups of 4 probably would finish in about of two hours in normal conditions.
- NAVIGATION - Being fairly open, and with only one blind basket, I found the navigation to be a breeze. I took a picture of the map at front but had to only reference it a couple of times. Course is also great for roller caddies.
- LOCATION - A five minute drive from I65. Perfect for a freeway stop between courses.
- NIGHT GOLF - This is an ideal night golf course. Spacious fairways, few trees, no overgrowth and no water hazards in play.
- RAW BEAUTY - The raw beauty of the course is about average or a touch above. The course grounds were kept up very well for my visit. It appears that from prior reviews that the course is constantly manicured and mowed.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - due to the low overgrowth and absence of a water hazard, this would be an ideal course to bring beginners to. The course is probably also great for rec thru intermediate players as well. Advanced players won't really be challenged however.

Cons:

No major issues with Lovers Lane, but it does have less than normal uniqueness and difficulty in the holes.
- UNIQUENESS - Perhaps the thing lacking the most is the uniqueness. About half of the course plays open and the other half plays threw moderate tree lanes. There is only one blind basket (14), there's only one dogleg (18) and only a handful of holes have to bend or skip into a pocket. There's no water in play to force a line, (some may considering this a blessing). There are five short par 4's along the layout (350-500 feet) and that I'm sure many players play them as all 3's. I do want to add that I spotted a bunch of newly planted trees, so a good thing to look forward too.
- DIFFICULTY - Well below average. Advanced players should have no problem being well below course par and should probably play them all 3's as mentioned above. I'm baffled as to why hole (4) is listed as a par 4 at all, especially when five other par 3s are longer than it. Intermediate and Rec players may be delighted however as it can be a feel good round. It's a great opportunity for those players to finish around even.
- ELEVATION - They use it a little bit here and there, but it's really not used in the finishing of a hole at all. Total elevation change is probably 40 feet. However, there are no shots that rise or fall, basket to tee, by more than 15 feet. Hole 3 thru 5 play across a valley that dips 30-35 feet or so, but the pin is generally located at the same level as the tee. It would been nice to have at least one hole that played up, and one that played down, on a more aggressive slope.
- SPACING - A bit below average, Several of the fairways feel partially shared. Discs will likely end in other fairways on several holes.
- WIND - Due to the lack of trees, wind will likely be a major issue. I personally was greeted by 20-30 mph gusts during my visit. As stated by some other reviewers, wind will likely be the most challenging aspect of the course, and I agree.

Other Thoughts:

My first time playing a Kentucky course and it was a fun stop. The course is definitely geared to rec and intermediate players. course would also be good for beginners and family's. There's a nice playground inside the park grounds as well.

Pros:

Great course for beginners.
Virtually no chance of loosing a disc.
Well manicured.
Easy to find. Convienent.

Cons:

Not challenging - of course I still haven't gotten a hole in one. No wind breaks, on a slightly windy day you will feel it. that is really the only thing about the course that is challenging.

Other Thoughts:

Me and my buddies work close enough that we can play the front nine at lunch and do so regularly. If you are out there between 11:30 and 1 on a weekday you'll probably see us. Because it is open and not incredibly challenging, it is great for beginners.

The big tree in the middle of the back nine can eat your disc if your not careful. Hit the giant hole in it and it will fall down into the tree 8 or 10 feet. if you played this course and pulled an orange groove out of that tree, it is mine, hit me up.

6. No rough or foliage to deal with

3. Too wide open on some of the holes

4. Too many straight shots

Other Thoughts:

This course was overall was fun and if your looking to get in a quick round of 18 in Bowling green this is where I would do it. It's a little to wide open on the back 9 but the front 9 has decent amount of obstacles. It just felt like most holes were relatively the same and it didn't have much character to the course or signature holes. This was a This was stop #3 on our 111 hole day and was really easy to whip thru in a short period of time. We were jogging at times but it took 2 avg players 1:30 min to play.

Let It Rip... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 28, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The first thing I will say about this course was the access to this park was very easy. It is only about a mile off of I-65 in Bowling Green. The park itself is VERY VERY nice. The beautiful landscaping is nice and the grass is well maintained. (lots of actual grass and very few weeds)

The course itself would be considered as gently rolling. The concrete tee-pads are in good shape and the signs are in good shape, easy to find and accurate. This course does favor a player that can drive the disc 320 or more. You will need to get loose before the first tee. The baskets were also in pretty good shape.

Hole 1 is a dead straight 405' that just begs for you to launch it.

Holes 2-8 are lightly to moderately wooded holes that offer a good test of shotmaking while providing ample opportunity at making birdies.

Hole 9 is a very short par 3 that is a HARD turn to the right. There is a mando on this hole that required a very hard turn (rhbh) or big (rhfh) fade. Very tough hole for a rhbh.

Hole 10-12 are back to the lightly wooded holes where long drives will provide chances at birdie.

Hole 13-18 are very open and relatively flat. There are a few trees and at least 1 area of o.b. in this section of the course, but there is an out (safe area) on just about every hole.

Even though this course is pretty long, it didn't seem to overly favor the longer arms. My playing partner and I have very different games, but we both wound up with our usual scores as compared to par.

Cons:

Even though I absolutely loved the first 12 holes, 13-18 could use a few more obstacles to make this a Top notch course.

I don't remember any low ceiling required shots.

Two other things that I found missing were benches and water. They may have been there, but I didn't find them.

Other Thoughts:

I will absolutely be back to play this course again. It does provide some challenges for the technical player while also providing the big arms several chances to let it fly. I really enjoyed the scenery of the park. Well worth the hour drive each way.

Got a controlled 350’+ drive? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 9, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The quaintly named Lovers' Lane park disc golf course is situated in the lightly rolling front quarter of a large park otherwise dedicated to over a dozen soccer fields (some lighted). Holes that range from 225 to 500 feet (most in the mid 300's) combine with voluminous parking to make this course an easy add to the annual Bowling Green Ams, where the occasional winds can influence shot selection.

Awesome concrete tees, huge park trees to define lines, and no underbrush add to a creative course layout to let the Intermediate to Advanced disc golfer really show off their distance drives. During tournament play, the clean rock lined drainage areas are used as out of bounds to force even more control of said drives.

The flow of the course is mainly intuitive because it is so open: you usually only have to look for the nearest tee sign from the basket you just completed. Starting by the shelter at the left front corner of the (first) parking lot, you angle out 400' across the open field, then hit a couple of annies (rhbh) - hole 2 being a little contrived, and hole 3 feeling longer and tougher than its stated 285' - before reaching two of the prettiest holes on the course. Hole 4 drives over a rolling valley to the other side, and 5 comes back the other way with more trees and rocks to 'worry' your shot. The next really interesting shot might be the #9 mando anny that now has a tarp instead of the less attractive chain link seen in the picture. At this point, you're back near the shelter, so you might want to catch your breath, because the back nine feels quite a bit longer.

Hole #10 is lengthy, and you'll need to keep your drive low or to the left of the tree 150 feet out. 11 and 12 basically parallel each other, before crossing the entry drive for the lengthy hole 13. #14 shoots between a pair of large pines, and the 500' #15 ends all the way across the field to the left of a gorgeous, huge tree (wish I knew my tree species!). 16 & 17 work back to the main driveway, which you cross to take on the sweeping hyzer finish on 18. Overall, when you finish Lovers', you'll have loosened your arm up a bit more than some of the other, wooded, technical courses in town.

The (Innova disc catcher) baskets catch very well, but do have the dreaded chastity belt at the top, which I manage to clank only on what should be 'gimme' birdie putts! Tee signs (as seen in the pictures here) are decent: they show the primary line to the basket, as well as some of the obstacles to avoid, and appear to be fairly accurate for this course.

Cons:

For a relatively lengthy course (almost 6000'), there are surprisingly few benches near the tees (though I did note two or three picnic tables along the course). There aren't a lot of other activities inside this park for non-discing members of the family to stay entertained (though it is right next door to an elementary school, so their playground might be accessible?). And depending on the season and the way the wind is blowing, the extensive cow pastures lining the southwest side of the course can be, shall we say, 'aromatic'.

Other Thoughts:

This course will force a typical Rec level player to make good upshots and putts to keep hitting par 3's, while the longer armed players at intermediate and above have a good chance of putting together a number of birdies: it just depends on who has an accurate 320-350' drive in their bag.

Good start 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 30, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

There were a few holes early that were in some trees, where if you missed your line you would be scrambling to make par. Other than that the course was pretty open. One thing it definitely had going for it was length though. With an average hole length of 330, and multiple holes in the 400 ft range you could throw it hard and let them fly a lot. The course was in good condition with sinage, teepads, and baskets all being good. The place itself was nice and the grass was amazingly green. (it was strange) It was just a nice park with a pretty good disc golf course.

Cons:

Too open, some of the holes got repetitive, and honestly if I lived here I'd stop after 12 and start over again. The last few holes were just out in a field and decent length. But they really had no character and they got to be boring. Also there's a cow pasture running along one end of the course, and lets just say it wasn't the greatest smelling thing the world had ever known.

Other Thoughts:

The first 12 holes I really enjoyed, and actually if the open holes stopped at about 15 that would have been fine too, and the course was definitely a 3.5 if not a 4 at that point. But it just got boring. Overall it was a nice park with a nice course but it doesn't deserve as high reviews as it's gotten in my opinion.

-Really nice grass for a disc golf course. I'm used to Florida's sandy courses, so this was a real treat. You can play while on vacation, and your clean sneakers will remain clean.
-Attractive
-Signage was very good.
-Cows next door to a few holes. I consider this a plus (even with the cow smell). It was fun to hear moo'ing while driving off the tee.
-Good variety of shots, with mostly trees, rocks, and hills for difficulty

Cons:

-Wind (or is that a Pro...you decide). I always have a tougher time in the wind. Since I was on vacation, I only had 1 disc with me, and it was the wrong one. I'd bring more to this course next time.

Best course I played there....still not great 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 1, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course was very beautiful and well maintained. The open holes are very well mowed

It had a great mix of open and moderately wooded holes that made for a good balance. The OB was fair and I didn't mind the mando on 2 which I assume was that there to stop people from throwing over the barbed wire fence on the right.

Nice tee-signs

Cons:

Just didn't have that wow factor don't get me wrong it is a solid course but it is far from great.

Lack of benches was irritating once again. Also no trashcans that I can remember

I do find holes that are wide open with nothing major in the way to be boring so that took away from the course in my eyes.

Other Thoughts:

This course was a good one to play. It was the best one that my division played at BG however it still wasn't anything special imo. The wooded holes added a little difficulty but it was easy to get up and down(unless you went ob) due to virtually no rough. I would recommend this one over the others that I played here for sure but some of the other courses in town are likely more worth your while.

Pros:

Loves Lane is a slightly longer course with some large mature trees and no underbrush. It has nice discatcher baskets and big concrete tee pads.

The mature trees create multiple lines to the basket on many of the holes and present the fun challenge of navigating them. There are moderate sized rolling hills throughout the course which adds to the fun. While the course is a bit on the long side, there's still a decent variety of hole length with 5 holes under 300 ft, 8 between 300-350 ft and 5 holes between 350-500 ft.

The course is easy to navigate, there's a large course map at the start of the course and the tee signs get the job done. There's a practice basket, restroom and water fountain and the course has looping 9's.

Cons:

While there are a good amount of mature trees on about half the course, the other half is basically wide open, especially the back 9.

There isn't a good shot variety here. A couple holes force turnover shots and some have multiple routes to the basket, but most are too wide open to force any sort of line to the basket.

IMHO, hole 2 has a gimmicky mando forcing you to keep from throwing the hyzer route.

Other Thoughts:

The distance makes this a good course for more advanced players and the lack of under brush makes it very friendly for newer players.

Lovers Lane is a fun course worth playing when you're in Bowling Green. The distance adds to the challenge, but the course is so open

Top 3 in Bowling Green 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 17, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great place to work on your distance. Multiple drives to be worked on here, not just straight shots here. Also multiple routes can be taken on each hole. Strategic trees make you alter your shot. Plenty of birdies if you play your drive right, but can also have bogeys if you throw an errant drive or the winds are rolling.

Cons:

No benches are here on this course. Hole 10's tee pad needs to be replaced. Really minor things.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of the 3 best courses in Bowling Green. Fun course to empty your bag on many holes and it's fun to do the parking lot challenge on hole 18. Definately has to be visited if you are in the area.

Lovely Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 11, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Lover's Lane is a very pretty course that features groves of hardwood trees and gently rolling hills over nice green grass. The course is very seperate from the other parts of the park so you do not have to worry about non discers.

The design of the course really makes the most of the gentle elevation changes on this property. There are only 3 or 4 holes that play flat. The design also brings the trees into play as much as possible requiring at least a minimum of shot shaping while allowing most holes to be thrown either FH or BH. Even in the mostly open back nine there are some trees to contend with as well as some thoughtful OB to add difficulty. Lover's Lane offers a pretty decent variety of hole length with a few nice short ace runs all the way up to a 500+ long bomber. Both the front and back nines loop back to the same point.

This course has a nice easy flow to it. This is helped by the bright yellow Discatchers (in great shape) and the tee signs at each tee.

There are very nice amenities at this course. A practice basket with distance markers, bathrooms, water fountain, pavilion near #1, benches and garbage cans. The course itself is also very well maintained with the grass mowed regulary and some nice mulch around the baskets to prevent wear.

This is a great course for beginners up through advanced.

Cons:

This is really not an overly challenging course. There ae not any holes that really make you stop and think about your throw. If you can drive in the 300' range you can drop some pretty low scores here.

The tee's are beginning to show quite a bit of wear. Cracks are beginning to form and erosion around the tees are increasing.

The back nine is a little boring. Without the trees of the front nine the holes are a little repetitive.

Other Thoughts:

I played this course during the 2010 BG Ams and I had a lot of fun. The course is really well kept and is enjoyable to play. With the amount of short, woods courses in the BG area this is a nice change of pace. I think Lover's Lane is another nice course for the area. I am planning on playing the 2011 BG Ams and I hope I get to play it again.
