Short but tough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course had very well defined lines. Many of this courses holes are in the woods, but there's always a gap that you are aiming for. There were no holes where I felt like I was "throwing and hoping".

There were signs leading to the next tee on *almost* every hole (see more in cons section).

None of the holes were very long. Accurate shots felt extremely rewarding, though the holes in the open were not very challenging (might be a con depending on skill level).

Baskets are in great shape.

Cons:

Concrete tee pads are great, but some of them were cracked (still playable, but you would want to watch your step while throwing).

Many of the signs at the tee which listed details about the hole were so worn out they could not be read.

While the signs indicating where the next tee is are mostly good, there are two holes (9 and 16) which lack them, and arguably, they are the most needed. I would recommend downloading the map for first time players.

Other Thoughts:

If you enjoy wide open shots that you can CRUSH with a driver, this course is not for you. The wooded area makes for a mostly technical course.

Veterans Park is absolutely beautiful. I would recommend this park to anyone, even if they're not planning to play a round of disc golf.

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

I was in Lexington for a couple days and had time to play two courses. I chose two on the south end of town, both ranked in Kentucky's top 25 courses. As of this review, Jacobson was ranked 8th and Veterans was ranked 25th. You can read my review of Jacobson, but overall, I was very happy with the decision to play that course. Veterans was fun, but there were enough cons to make it just an average course, in my book. As of this review, I've played 16 courses that are ranked in the top 25 of their respective states (10 in NC and 6 elsewhere). Veterans gets the lowest rating, from me, out of those 16.

+ The course layout is actually quite good. There are some challenging holes, with a variety of wooded (almost all holes), with a couple of open holes mixed in, some fun downhill holes, some uphills, hyzers, anhyzers, and straight. I liked the use of the creek on a few holes. That was a fun challenge.

+ My favorite hole ended up being #6. When I first got to it, I walked the fairway to try to figure out where in the heck to throw it. The fairway is very tight, with a creek bordering the entire left-hand side and a steep hill on the right-hand side. Seems like it would be pretty easy to hit the slope and roll to the creek. There are also trees dotting the fairway. It's somewhat of a blind tee shot playing downhill to a basket on a flat area, with water to the right. I chose an anhyzer route. From the tee, it looked like I hit the edge of the slope and landed there. When I got to where the disc hit, I saw that my disc had cleared the slope, just barely, and glided down to the basket, within 10 feet. I'll take it!

+ Veterans Park, itself, seems like a big, destination park. There was a competitive softball game going on at the stadium when I was there. Lots of fans cheering. The walking paths and jogging trails were packed with park-goers. Despite the park crowd, I did not see any other disc golfers and never felt like the walkers/joggers got in the way of my lines on the holes close(r) to the paths.

+ Drainage on the course seemed pretty good. It had just rained the day before and I didn't encounter any standing water or mud patches.

+ The tees were ok.

+ Take away my negatives (below), and this would be a stand-out course. The fun factor is high and the holes have a good variety and are adequately challenging. BUT, there are negatives...

Cons:

- First and foremost, when I played -- in the summer -- the underbrush was out of control, not only off the fairways, but on some fairways. I came across a guy weed-whacking a fairway, so I don't want to bash the people maintaining the course. It's situated in a forest...and it is the South...and it was summer. It must be a nightmare to try to keep this course maintained. But, like I said, the underbrush was really bad. Grass and weeds were high in many of the fairways. The risk of disc loss was high.

- The other big drawback for me, a newcomer to the course, was navigation. There were no Next Tee signs. I relied on my DGCR Course Map, but even that couldn't keep me out of trouble. There are numerous trails cris-crossing the course. I followed one by mistake after hole 15 and darn near got lost in the forest. It probably took me 20 minutes or more to finally find hole 16. This course desperately needs some Next Tee signs and trail markers.

- Old baskets, hard to spot in the woods.

Other Thoughts:

If you have one day and the choice is Jacobson or Veterans (the only two courses I've played in Lexington), go with Jacobson. Veterans is probably a lot more enjoyable in the fall or winter. And even with the cons, it's worth playing. Just bring a map.

Good, tough course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 28, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Albeit hard, this in a fun course to play. It will really test your shot shaping of line holding ability. Beautiful surroundings for most of the course. Many holes in the woods makes this a good course for hot days.

Cons:

-tee pads seem rather small to me
-could use some updated breadcrumb signage...the first time I played here I walked a lot of extra steps
-baskets could use some color, they can be really hard to pick out on some holes from the tee pad

Other Thoughts:

Despite the cons listed I really like this course. I have already returned for my second visit in as many weeks (I live 30 miles away) and will return for many more. This course is very fun to play, with some good shots and a little luck you will enjoy it.

Better than expected 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The definition of tightly wooded, technical course is Veterans Park. It still gives you a couple of chances to throw some long like 2 and 10, but for the most part your going to have quite a few trees to worry about. A course this wooded obviously requires all the shots you could think of. The course is extremely difficult, and a couple over par is an advanced player level round. Par is a good score on most of the holes out there, and while it will reward shots that hit their intended line, it will severely punish those that miss and a lot of times you're looking at a flip out into the fairway and trying to get up and down for bogey. This is the most well-kept course I have played, considering how wooded it is. The grass is normal height everywhere, the woods (rough) is nice and clean at the bottom which makes finding your disc easier, but still plenty of branches and leaves up a little higher so it still punishes errant shots. They are working on the navigation issue a lot of reviews talk about with some next tee signs that are very helpful.

Cons:

The tee-boxes are a little short everywhere and really short in some places. The tee signs are less than adequate and if I hadn't been playing with someone who knew the course, I would have spent a lot of time looking for the basket. I believe some of the distances are off too, because of new pin positions being put in.

Other Thoughts:

Veterans park really exceeded my expectations. From looking at the pictures I expected a tough course that would be hard to walk and hard to find discs, where I didn't know where I was going. The only one I got was the tough course part and that was the part I was looking forward to. I hope I can come up to Lexington and play here again sometime.

Unique course flow 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 21, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Buongiorno, Principessa!, They have a TANK! Veteran's Park in Lexington, KY has some nice facilities for a number of sports, including a batting cage, ball fields, excellent shelters, benches, trash cans, plenty of parking, restrooms, and so on, plus a challenging, intermediate to advanced disc golf course, with a mix of wooded (14) and open (4) holes.

Decent baskets follow minimalist signage (1st time: print a map or go with a guide!), and the variably sized concrete tee pads are -usually- appropriate for the distances involved (holes range from 165 to 475 feet, with some of the shorter ones being uphill). Multiple pin positions make the course play very differently. My first time here was a windy day, and baskets were mostly in the long positions. I shot a dozen strokes better on a calm day with short placements (well, lucky breaks helped too)!

There have been recent improvements in the infrastructure. After hole 6, what used to be described as the 'Stairs to Mordor' have been re-treaded (so to speak) with a nice use of recycled tires.

Cons:

Course flow is definitely unique. I can think of 8 places where this course needs upgraded 'next tee' signage. Or breadcrumbs.

A couple of the tees (1, 3, 12) are either too small or too raised/ eroded for comfort.

Some of the paths and fairways are in need of stump grinding and root removal.

Other Thoughts:

Hole by hole: 1) tight releasing, gentle hyzer (rhbh) woods opener, then turn left and go down the path to
2) very open (noodlearm) bomb where you want to avoid fading over the neighbor's fence (left)
3) wooded, downhill, anny end with a creek long & left, then turn right, cross the road (sign needed)
4) note basket position on this side-hill glade: could be long hyzer, or directly ahead, then go downhill to next tee
5) uphill anny with three pin positions requiring a peek ahead
6) pretty, ravine-side straight downhill to peninsula green, and a fairly substantial creek if you go long, then the stairs up to
7) an open field shot with a path left (you hook over into the woods in the long position). Keep your eyes peeled for the path to
8) straight but woody fairway with that creek on the left, then path left of magnificent tree to
9) short uphill deuce opportunity, then you'll need to find the breadcrumbs, go around, or cross #17's fairway
10) eventually, you'll find the tee below the left field fence, shoot straight over the rise (feel's very long)
11) longer side-hill fairway with some pines to make it interesting, look left for path to
12) tight wooded rise shot off of a small tee
13) longer wooded downhill that either ends straight or to the right, then confusing trek to
14) similar length, but tighter green, then go to the right
15) sweeping lane with a gentle hyzer either across the creek bed or long (475') down the lane, then up across the path, and look sharp about 100' in for a split in the path beside a honeysuckle and a large tree. The secret path takes you down to
16) straight and longer or hooking left to basket on the hillside
17) uphill long hyzer or straight away, both with trees to make it interesting, then up across the path & drive, onto the woods
18) finish coming up through the woods to one of two basket positions.

Bring your A game 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

A great place to play IF you can shoot well. Clean, benches, garbage cans and good baskets.

Cons:

Main thing is navigation, with or without a map it is tough. The parks department needs to put up directional signs to the next T!!!! It would make this course much easier to play. If all the fairways were as clear and clean as hole #1 this would be a tremendous course. I would probably give it a 4+. I do not mind tight lines but no significant fairway and just shootin' through the trees is not the game I like. It seems there are alot of holes that you're just hoping to make it anywhere near the basket.

Other Thoughts:

It was a fun course to play but bring your beat in disks and leave the good ones at home I hate destroying one my go-to drivers tossing through randomly scattered trees, If I shoot out of the fairway - my fault!

Favorite Course in Lexington 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 24, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Newly improved long concrete pads on most holes.
-Nice variation in wooded to open holes.
-The stream comes in to play on holes 3,5,6, and 8.
- Some elevation change. Uphills and downhills and sidehills.
- Garbage cans on most holes.... haven't ever noticed any of the areas looking "trashy".
- Most holes have more than one route to the basket.
-The wooded areas block most of the wind.

Cons:

-This course is subject to getting very muddy.
- The rough can start to overgrow very quickly.
- Some shots seem to require just as much luck as skill. For example, #3 shoots downhill steeply. There are 2 different lines to the basket... but they are sorrounded by several tree branches that can fling you down short.
-I hear that the poison ivy can start growing thick here during summer.

Other Thoughts:

-I don't know how common this is, but I've seen a snake the last two times on the course. Both near the creeks. Couldn't tell if they were poisonous or not. In southern Ohio, most snakes near water are poisonous Copperheads. I didn't have a chance to get a good look.

Excellent Course in Lexington 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-wooded, technical holes
-good mixture of distances on holes
-signage for each hole
-map and practice basket at beginning of course
-fairly logical course flow (once you're used to it)
-usually not very busy

Cons:

-can be muddy in woods
-can lose discs in creek (deep/wide enough at points)
-finding your way around the first (or second) time can be VERY confusing

Other Thoughts:

This is just a park course but is a very good course, in my opinion probably the best in Lexington. There are a few open holes but most are wooded, technical shots that challenge you without being extremely difficult. There are signs on each hole and the course is generally well-groomed and clean. It isn't super busy most of the time and on hot days being in the woods for most of the course really helps. If it's your first time make sure you bring the map or go with someone familiar with the course. It's very confusing at first but once you get used to it I really don't think it's that bad, the course is set up so the holes are designed as well as possible and that means not every one is directly back-to-back. If you're in Lexington this course is a must-play.

Lexington has a great amount of disc golf here. They have Shillito a few miles down the road, and many others within the area. This course is in the top three. I think that this course could be much better. It has alot of potential. Some area here are almost unbearable to play through. The first time I played here I forgot to print out a map. Normally when I play a new course I always print out a map. It was a huge mistake not printing one out here. I got lost probably five times. The one that was tough to find was hole #10. you just have to follow the road path outside of hole #9. it's very tough to navigate. I just recommend to anybody planning on playing here print a map out. One thing that I like here is how they consistently change the pin placements. It's nice tonplay almost a different hole for a change. I like the benches per every hole, it's very nice to rest. It was nice here how there were very few bugs. At slot of courses there everywhere. Here not so much. It's nice for a change. I came here my first time and played Veterans and Shillito in the same day. They are two nice well put together courses. Other Thoughts:

This course is very difficult for beginners. Only 4 of the 18 holes I would consider in the open (trees not in play for the most part). Most of the holes are very technical with lots of trees in the throwing lanes including holes that have a OB creek (3 holes) which is greatly affected by recent rainfall. There is a good mix of distance on the holes. I would rate the chance of lost discs on this course as average. The distance between some holes is quite long and hard to find. Playing this course frequently is definitely improving my game.

Challenging course if you can find your way around it 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 22, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Veterans provides a stern challenge of technical disc golfing abilities. The mostly wooded course covers a variety of distances and shot shapes to test all players. The tees are adequate and still grippy when wet (played there with a lot of snow on the ground, so this was important). The baskets are mostly in good condition with several holes having multiple pin placements. The disc golf course is away from most other activities aside from two open holes near a walking path and two holes somewhat adjacent to a baseball field. The layout utilizes the existing elevation excellently with a variety of shots; uphill, downhill and across. Even with the elevation there are still multiple holes that are very flat so you don't get that feeling of repetitiveness throughout a round. The wooded holes all have well defined fairways with a spare tree or two here and there to add a little luck in reaching the green unscathed. The layout makes good use of the creeks that come through the park with the wooded number 6 being the best example. It plays as a downhill turnover (for RHBH) with one creek along the left that joins in with a larger creek behind the basket to make the green on a penisula. The rough is thick enough to where you definitely don't want to go in there. It can and will cost you a stroke or two. That can also be used as a con, depending on your view point.

Cons:

For first timers out there, be sure to have someone who has played there before with you. Navigation is almost next to impossible. I've played there half a dozen times and still get lost. One of the other biggest safety issues is after number 9, one of the paths away from the basket leads you directly across number 17's fairway. The other path leads you away from this danger spot but you are another 100 feet from the next tee pad after exiting the woods which is already a very long walk in itself. There are several long walks throughout the course, not just at the turn either. Though the tee pads are good and grippy, they are small with several not providing any space for a run up. With recent work in the park, several of the baskets have been moved but not properly placed in the ground. Several of the baskets are either leaning, too short to the ground, too tall or any combination of the problems. The rough is thick enough to where you definitely don't want to go in there and it can and will cost you a stroke or two. That can also be used as a pro, depending on your viewpoint.

Other Thoughts:

Veterans is a very fun course to play if you like tight woods and have an ever varying shot selection. Solid driving can see you looking at a birdie opportunity on most holes and bad driving can leave you scrambling for par. The open holes can give you a little breather before being thrown back into the woods for more fun. With only a few non-difficult changes to the course (navigation help and better basket care), Veterans can be a true championship caliber course.

Poor Man's Idlewild 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mostly this is a technical wooded course that plays down clearly defined fairways. There is a good mix of straight, left, right, up, down, and creeks in play. There are a few open holes to give you a break and to add some length (although these are kind of boring compared to the wooded holes since there were little to no obstacles.) There are several other really good and unique holes on this course. One of my favorite holes was one where you had to play across the creek to a peninsula green (this particular hole especially, and a few others, reminded me of holes that might be found at Idlewild!)

Cons:

Mainly one BIG one- Navigation, or rather, the near impossibility of it. First, we had trouble finding the entrance to the park- my GPS took us to a small section on the back side with no access to the rest of it, so get good directions before you come. Once we got into the park there was a softball tournament going on, thankfully the person in charge believed us that we were there to play disc golf and did not make us pay the softball parking fee! All this was just a foreshadowing of things to come. After walking a long ways from where we were forced to park, we saw some of the course, but could not find tee #1. Thankfully a local tournament was gathering and some of them pointed us to a path through the woods and let us tee off before they got started. Unfortunately, there were several more times where we had to do a serious search to find the next hole. Sometimes there were multiple paths leading away from the basket, and often times none of the paths led you to a tee. You would emerge from the woods and see nothing but a walking trail. At one point for us, and there are several stories told in other reviews like this, where we had non-disc golfers helping us find the next hole!!!

Other Thoughts:

As others have said, this is hard course to rate. (It has been given every rating from a 1.0-5.0!) Thinking back on it I really enjoyed most of the holes here, however, I was unable to enjoy the round fully because of the frustration of spending so much time trying to find the next hole. A big part of my rating is that I am reviewing it as a person who was playing the course for the first time, with no guides and navigational aids. However, I know this is a well-respected course by the locals. I recommend this course if you are in the area, but try to meet up with a local to help show you around.

NAVIGATION is horrible on this course, even though there are signs they are so small and set off away from everything you wouldn't even notice that they were there. I played by myself and couldn't find the next hole more than once in the round, I had to get help. The area is used by a lot of other people, had mountain bikers ride through more than once.
