Old Time Tromp Over Hills

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 22, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

A course that feels its age but still offers a lot.

-Amenities: Solid baskets (see Other Thoughts), concrete tees, signs with info and maps (plus the legacy signs, a nice historical touch), flags for OB, taped spokes.

-Environment: The welcoming, aged vibe that's pleasant to play in. Depending on what you've played, imagine Brahan, Sedgley Woods, Redan, Henry Horton, or even a bit of Mt. Airy. If I had to guess, I would've pegged this as an 80s course for its clean park environment and local scene. Plus, the railroad tracks near the start are a nice touch.

-Hills & Water: A creek in play frequently, and a large majority of holes utilize gentle but substantial hills.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: A basic setup with sparse trees and lots of hills. You'll generally be throwing up a slope on one hole and down on the next. Add in a handful of relevant trees that only restrict shaping somewhat, and you have the typical hole. A few greens have nice features (usually the creek), but there aren't any holes that really stand out until the final (18), which is an epic downhill tunnel with the creek looming behind. Like many older courses, the course is adaptable to a wide variety of throwing styles, and should be easily scrambleable if you can deal with slopes around the basket.

-"Friendly": Easy to walk, not overly punishing, hard to lose discs.

Cons:

-Interest: I didn't find Earlewood very interesting. Of course, I also kept getting fed up because I bogeyed holes by consistently misjudging the hills. But barring my judgements, there definitely aren't a lot of shapes forced, and the consistent switch from uphill to downhill could induce seasickness.

-Layout: Not the easiest layout to follow. Often there are multiple baskets or tees in sight, and occasionally the transition is long and not particularly intuitive. There are also fairway overlap possibilities.

-Theater: A classic obstacle that should not be here is the theater coming into play on (15)-(16). If empty, I suppose it's not a safety hazard, but it sure stinks to have a sea of concrete in a fairway.

-Trek: With the constant up and down, Earlewood can begin to feel tiring. Especially if it's your second course of a hot day…

-All 3s: Not a single shot that you're not shooting for birdie on if you have 300' of power. By default, that restricts the level of variety.

Other Thoughts:

Earlewood is that cool dude in his early 60s that's clearly old but also manages to stay relevant to the kids. I think I enjoyed my playthrough less than many old courses I've been to, but on the whole the course rates solidly in the middle of my list of legacy courses. I think it's Good, but not a destination in any sense.

-Chains: These baskets look like they came out of the basement of Steady Ed's grandfather. They're also significantly smaller than current standard size. On the other hand, they catch very well. Is this a pro or con? I don't want to say. I felt like it was a con personally, but a local I met was elated over them.

Easter Play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 4, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Tee signs
-Tee pads
-Goals have character

Cons:

-Crowded park
-Language from basketball courts was inappropriate for young kids.
-Picnickers on fairways
-Baskets are older and do not catch as well as newer models.
-Fairways are packed tightly together.

Other Thoughts:

Played this course for the first time on Easter. So the park was quite crowded due to holiday. That means multiple picnics on fairways and tee pad benches used as picnic tables?

It took us a bit to verify where 1 started, but we did find it. First hole greeted us with a huge freshly fallen pine tree that obstructed hole 1 view. It was OK though, probably made the hole more interesting.

Greeted by multiple level of cursing coming from the basketball courts on tee pad 2. I know this is not the disc golf courses fault, but it was very unpleasant.

The goals don't catch very well, and are a little unsightly, but I would never change them. For one thing, no one will ever steal one, and for another, they give the course a unique flair that I thought was a nice change from norm.

I will say the course is obviously loved. Various different park benches at tee pads of varying age show a lot of care is poured into it. I did like the home-made disc retrievers found laying around in various places. I have not seen that done before.

I think the overall flow used the area well, but the tightness that everything was packed in was a bit unnerving. I honestly could not wait to finish.

I rate based on form and function in comparison to other courses, but the sentimental could rate this course higher based on the love shown throughout.

Clear The Amphitheater! I'm Going For Double Eagle! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

(3.075 Rating) A pleasant city park course with some substantial elevation change.
- ELEVATION AND VARIETY - I parked my car in the wrong lot and opted to start on (17), which is the lamest hole on the course. Naturally my first thought was, "well this course is way over-rated." Then I walked over to tee (18) and paused as I stood and stared down a gauntlet 60-foot downhill wooded tunnel shot. For a park with such limited space, there are a wide array of throws to be made here. Lots of elevation movement with around a dozen holes with 20 feet or more of grade variation, going up and down. Six holes have a small creek in play and it plays on the left 3 times, plays on the right once, its cleared once and there's also one play where you need to stop short. The course unfortunately does not really have any heavily wooded holes and to some, it's likely all par 3s despite what the tee signs claim. A 310-foot par 5??? Ha.
- CHALLENGE - Ignoring the old school marked par 67 figure, this par 54/55 course feels like a tweener between Recreational and Intermediate level. The one soft par 4 I think could be hole (3) as its uphill and just shy of 400 feet, but it plays more like 480. There are going to be some tough par 3 gets though, like (7) and (18). Technical skills and power is going to be needed to routinely shoot in the forties.
- NAVIGATION AND SIGNAGE - I thought this aspect was good enough to not be frustrating. Since I started on (17), I did not see a map right away, or ever, but I might of missed it. What I thankfully observed on (17s) basket was a painted spoke, and it helped a ton getting around. As for the tee signs, they are simple, being just a number and distance. They will work on this course though as most of the course is lightly wooded and the baskets can be seen.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - There are some neat features in Earlewood Park. First off, it plays through an older established park with monster 100-year-old trees. There's a perfect sized 10-foot wide creek meandering throughout the layout and it truly effects the look and feel of a couple holes. On the flipside there are a couple minor detractors. For example, there is a ton of foot traffic erosion on the course and it impacts the beauty on a handful of holes. The surrounding built environment is constantly in view too, although much of it complements the landscape. Overall, I scored this aspect 75 percentile.
- TEE AREAS - Decent sized concrete tees and most have benches to sit behind them.

Cons:

A good course that will be hard to improve upon.
- SPACING - There is a lot of course jammed into the allotted park space. Several holes parallel each other without buffer. Walking paths and park roads parallel several holes. The game is almost certainly going to be interrupted during rounds. For me personally, I too had to pause a few times during my weekday 10 am round. One shot here even requires doing a full clear of an outdoor amphitheater, hole (16). I can't tell if the hole was there first or the amphitheater. I fired two enjoyable tee shots with it being empty this day, but obviously, the hole would not be playable at times.
- CHAINS - The course page says machIs, and I think they are better than that as there is a double set of chains on these baskets. I have no idea what they are. They look hideous, so much so that I unfortunately don't remember how they caught. A park of this quality definitely should have the funds to replace these with something that's not such an eyesore.

Other Thoughts:

A very enjoyable all-around good city center park course. I would guess that by the proximity to downtown, the quality of the park and the erosion on the course, that this is an extremely popular course. Definitely worth a spin for Intermediates to Novice level players that are staying in town or traveling through. Advanced players and above will not be challenged, but just a couple times. Not ideal for beginners, but good sports would likely have a good time on it. Not anchor destination worthy and likely also not the top billing in Columbus, but there are a few holes here that do have a rock-star quality to them. Be sure and plan for extra round time if headed here during prime hours.
- TIME PLAY - 61 minutes for this quick solo.

Wonderful place to test skills! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 13, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*All Mach 1 goals in excellent shape.Great use of the hill sides, making some shots upwards, downwards and a few flat shots.

*Fair amount of trees give some of the short distances a better challenge.

*All concrete tee pads, except on hole 1.

*All tee's are marked with number post with feet and par on them.

*There are navigation stickers on every basket pointing towards the next hole.

*Great scenery with very good maintance.

*Great course for beginners or newer players to learn the sport.

*Low risk of losing a disc, although there are water hazzards they are very small.

*Hole 18 is a hole with great use of elevation and wooded area.

Cons:

*Navigation the first time around can be overwhelming, although the tee's are fairly easy to find the baskets are not so easy to spot.

*Very little buffer zones on a few holes, make it easy to fly a disc into another players way.

*This course can be a safety concern for smaller children due to the steep inclines and declines on a few holes.

*Although the baskets are in excellent shape they are older designs with smaller baskets and can cause a few more spit-outs.

Other Thoughts:

What an awesome place to test skill levels of all ages. A must play!

Still Royalty after all these years 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Concrete tee pads on every hole, Mach 1 baskets that look a little weird, but caught just fine.
Surprising amount of elevation for the city park just a few blocks from downtown. With a small stream running through the property, I guess housing wasn't an option. It does make a rather short course more challenging.
Lot's of other things going on in this park, but for the most part, the course stays away from those. More about the main exception later.
With the elevation, great mix of up and down holes, side hills holes, just about every possibility you can think of. Also a good mix of left and right breaking holes.
Most of the trees are large, old-growth, I didn't have to look too hard for my discs, except down by the stream.

Cons:

Tee signs are basic number, par and distance.
Grass seemed a little long the day I was there. The whole park seemed a little ragged, which is surprising since the Parks Dept HQ is located there.

Other Thoughts:

The stream valley the course plays through creates some very unique holes, none more so than #16. After a short downhill #15, with a death putt staring right at you, #16 tee is back up on the ridgeline. The basket is over on the other ridgeline, down below ?, an amphitheater with terraced, curved seating. The tee shot is over this structure to the basket on the other side, definitely a multi-drive hole!!
#4 and #5 make another interesting pair, #4 is short dowhill, through the trees to the basket near the stream, then #5 is uphill with a dry streambed lining the left side. It finishes near a huge, old tree.
The course finishes very well also, #18 tee is at the top of the hill, through some scattered trees, down to the basket 40-50 ft (?) below. A small pond is lurking on the left, stream behind and road on the right, very good finisher!
I see this is the 2nd oldest course in the state, its nice to see it has held up well and still provides a challenge.

Cons:

No sign for where course begins, or hole layout signs at teepads.

Urban Golf in a Rural State 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 17, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The individual holes on this course are excellent. This is an exceptional mix of right and left, elevation that borders on being bluffs or cliffs at times, and some of the slope and that elevation causes great confusion about disc choice. Advanced to pro players alike will find great challenge in the technical aspects, and even the most fit athlete will find the walk demanding (not to mention the heat and humidity adding to that).

Hole 18 was the signature to me, a steep long downhill that even those with average distance can reach. The question will be whether or not you get it onto that narrow green (I was 30 feet right, behind a 5 foot diameter oak, and barely able to stand on the slope, causing me to clang my putt).

Cons:

The park is a beautiful urban park with a visitor center and other facilities which aren't used much, so there is little interference with other park users.

The biggest cons are that the course map is terrible and the signage is awful. It's nearly impossible to find one's way around the first 6 holes, though the course becomes somewhat easier to navigate at that point (it seems obvious where the next hole is at that point). Those first few holes also cross an area with tennis courts and the fairways are a little too compact and close together, with numerous baskets visible (I played hole 6 tee to hole 7 basket in 3, which very much impressed another old timer out there).

Other Thoughts:

It's a beautiful park and challenging golf. If the first few holes could be redesigned and it were easier to follow, I might have bumped my rating up a half disc. If I lived in the area, I might make it my regular course, as it's easy to find and beautiful.

Earlewood Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-There are lots of interesting lines at Earlewood. Every hole seems to have "That one tree" that forces you to take an unconventional or unexpected line. This is really what makes the course fun.
-There are no filler holes or waste of space at Earlewood. It's not a large course, but it feels like the course is carefully crafted to maximize the space available.
-There is a surprising amount of elevation for a course in the midlands.
-This course has older baskets with a dome on top. This adds to the character of the course.
-Navigation is a little tricky until you realize that each basket has a sticker on top of the dome pointing you in the direction of the next tee. Not to mention the random green bar on the cage of each basket pointing you towards the next basket. This was a nice touch.
-Not a ton of places to lose a disc.

Cons:

-The biggest con for me at Earlewood was several key maintenance issues. The worst one being that the tee pads for holes 9 and 12 were almost completely covered with dirt and gravel. Another big issue is an abnormal amount of litter scattered throughout the course. And, finally, there is an abundance of poison ivy in the middle of the fairway on hole 7.
-The course is fairly short as are most of the holes.
-This course appears to be constantly busy!

Other Thoughts:

Earlewood Park is not the isolated disc golf oasis just outside of downtown Columbia, but I did not leave disappointed. It's a fun play that forces you to throw a variety of lines in order to score well. Earlewood has the elevation changes of the upstate, but the swamp by hole 18 doesn't let you forget that the coast is not far off.

Earlehood 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 14, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-The first pro about Earlewood is if you live in Columbia and cant drive very far, this course is the funnest to play in the area. Starting at hole 1 you know this course is going to have a treat in store for you.
-The course features holes that are moderately wooded, open, and heavily wooded. Hole 1 is what I would consider "moderately wooded" due to the trees located in the fairway. Not hard to miss them, but there are still trees. Hole 14 is an example of an open hole. A 200ft straight shot that, while having trees on either side, is very easy just to stay in the fairway for that easy bird, and it's even an ace run. Hole 18 is the most heavily wooded hole, but it's also one of the most fun. It's one of the longest holes, so if you're trying to put power in your drive make sure you watch where it goes because it can be very tedious to find.
-Elevation changes are abundant within Earlewood. Some holes you throw uphill, such as hole 7, and some holes you throw downhill, such as hole 18. They are just tremendously fun to play and if you get a lot of glide on one of those downhill holes it's definitely a blast to see. Hole 18 rivals that of R.L. Smith and Robbins as best downhill finishing hole for me.
-If you are new to disc golf, like I was when I first played here, you will love it. It's not hard to find the next teebox, holes are not too difficult with the pars they're set at, and you always have a chance at making a good run at the hole. Be wary of rollers though!
-The teepads are all concrete, and the baskets are the old Mach 1 baskets, although they catch very well and seem to fit the park.
-Restrooms and water fountains near hole 12, which is greatly appreciated!

Cons:

-It is not in the best of neighborhoods as far as I can tell. My buddy and I were playing hole 10 and there was a guy just sitting right off the fairway with his shirt off looking out of it. I assume he was homeless. Not all homeless people are bad, however, and this has not affected the rating at all.
-There are hardly any trashcans and no benches besides the occasional tree stump.
-If you are trying to play through a group ahead of you, I would just skip the hole they're on. Countless times I've had to sit there and wait for groups of 3, 4, 5 and once even a whole family of about 15 to play without them asking if we (2 of us) wanted to play through. I asked a group of 3 if we could play through, and you'd think I had asked them to commit treason on the king the way they looked at me. Again, this didn't affect my rating, just trying to let you all know.
-Pedestrian filled. It's close to two baseball fields, and when there are tournaments you cant even play some of the holes. Kids and adults alike just running around or sitting on the fairway.
-When there are mandos (hole 2 is the only one I know of) they're hard to spot. I didn't even realize hole 2 had a mando until my fifth time playing there. I think the lack of mandos makes it dangerous as well. I about clobbered someone on a shanked drive from hole 1. I was trying to go right of the trees, and even though I did go right, it was way way right. A mando would have prevented me from doing as such.
-If you do shank a drive, such as hole 5, be prepared to get dirty. To the left of hole 5 is a deep treacherous ravine and even in the dry summer days it can be a challenge.
-Hole 17 has great potential, however the grounding lines (?) that are right in front of the teebox really frustrate me.

Other Thoughts:

Very fun course within the Columbia area. It has its flaws, however it's still an amazing course.

My favorite holes are hole 4 (easy bird and an ace run, even with a simple overhand shot), Hole 8 is a wonderful and difficult shot; right off the teebox there are two trees you have to sneak your way past, but once you do (and you miss all the other trees) it's wonderful to play. I have to throw at least three drives if no one is behind me. Hole 16 and Hole 18 are good holes if you want to watch your drive soar!

My youth group is going to regret this 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 23, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Earlewood is an old course. It was designed six years before I was born. It has so many of the "old course" qualities. It's a relatively easy course that any player can enjoy. The hole quality here is a 137/180 so that makes it exciting.
-Great balance of open/wooded here! Most holes are in the middle here. There are a few truly wooded holes and a couple open holes. A hole that stands out as an open/wooded hole is 13! It's an uphill hyzer that starts in the open but the green is very wooded. Definitely my favorite green on the course. 18's green is up there with 13's green! 18 has a creek past the basket. I can't believe I got in the creek on my drive! There are plenty of treacherous greens as well (particularly drop offs.)
-Some huge elevation changes here. 18 is one of the greatest finishing holes I have played! It's a long par 3 (par 5 if you play rec) with a huge elevation drop. It's the empty your bag hole! 18 is my favorite hole on this course. 7 is a huge uphill shot as well. It's only 275' but plays right around 400'! Those two holes have the greatest elevation changes but there are several straight ups and downs! There is a six hole elevation combo. Holes 11-16 all utilize elevation very well! 16 is a sweet valley shot over the amphitheater. I would never want to see an event going on around the amphitheater because it would be hard to play the hole!
-Beginner friendly! The tee signs say the par for rec players but you can always play white level by playing every hole as a par 3. I shot 1 under playing every hole as a par 3. The rough is used very fair. None of the rough is used to the extreme but is used solidly and just the way it should. The lost disc potential is low but there is a chance.
-Trees. The trees make it a little bit tricky but nothing over the top. Due to trees, some holes require an interesting hyzer. Particularly hole 12. Very cool hole with very small gaps straight ahead making it a good idea to hyzer to the right. Same with hole 2. A straight shot won't do here. You can hyzer or anhyzer.
-The Teepads are the way they need to be. Perfect size, great shape and concrete.
-The Mach 1 baskets work very well with the course. They are old but still catch fine. Like I said before, I love the basket locations too! Great greens with roller potential!
-Ace opprotunities. Some good ace runs here, they are definitely not gimmes but birdies will come if you hit your lines. An ace can come here but it's not going to come easily at all.
-Nice little park that's family friendly. It has a playground, a ball field, etc.

Cons:

-Hole safety can be a real problem. Holes 1 and 2 are so close to each other. 17's fairway is awfully close to 18's Teepad as well. This problem comes around here are there showing there should be mandos.
-Hole 8 isn't a very good hole. It's just crammed in. It's super close to the road and there is a sign warning that the road ends. The hill slopes pretty steep to the left which could bring you back to hole 7. Just not a good hole for this course.
-Lack of amenities. No benches, trash cans, bathrooms.
-Hole 5's gulley is deep and insanely steep. I picked up my dad's disc and had a hard time getting out. It's even worse when it's wet outside. That's the hole that has good lost disc potential.
-I remember when I played here with my church group in 2012 and the bugs can be really bad in the summer.

Other Thoughts:

-I love Earlewood and I love how it's still worth a road trip to play the disc golf course. We stopped in Columbia to spend the night so our drive to ocean isle won't be so long and boring. It was well worth my 2+ hour drive over here in Columbia where I was actually born. Even the scary merge from hwy 20 to hwy 26 during rush hour. I was glad to play here again because I loved the course when I played in the summer of 2012 and only played 10 holes. My youth leaders did not know what they missed here. They only played 1 thru 8. I played those holes as well as 10 and 11. They should've made more time to play here. A lot more time! Things get interesting after 11. Hole 12 was one of the best holes here as well as 13. Great greens and very interesting fairways.
-This is probably the best course in the area. I don't see what the hoo plah is about Crooked Creek. I've seen the pictures. It looks like a generic flat course. Same goes for Owens Field. This course is worth a road trip if you mostly play for your personal enjoyment. The hole quality is great! Same goes for Stoney Hill. I'd love to play that course and I will one day! This course is great and deserves this rating of a 4.0. I personally liked the back nine better than the front nine. It's just as hilly but has more uniqueness to it.

Signature holes would be 16 and 18. With 16 being the most interesting and 18 having the greatest use of elevation

Toughest hole-Ehhh I'd say hole 2. It's a very tricky downhill anhyzer shot. Perfect for flicks. Still a pretty easy 3 but requires an unusual anhyzer.

Well kept up. Beautiful area/surroundings. Plenty of trees and a variety of challenges.

Cons:

A couple deep ravines where you can lose a disc. Baskets are "old style" and a bit long in the tooth.

Other Thoughts:

A really solid course. It is also pretty hilly. ON a few tees the elevation drops or rises 30+ feet in a relatively short span.

Nice course in pretty area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful shade trees, hills, varying terrain. Holes are encouraging as par is not difficult for intermediate players. Lots of trees and other to avoid.

Cons:

Again, maybe par is set too low on most holes.

Other Thoughts:

We enjoyed the course a lot and will return if we are in the area.

Needs some minor improvements 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 6, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

• Aesthetics
• Variety of Elevation
• Variety of layouts
• Amphitheater

Cons:

• Poor Signage
• Tight Layout, lots of switchbacks
• Lack of Seating
• Lack of Trash Receptacles
• No Bathrooms

Other Thoughts:

This is a very pretty course with lots of up and down and some really serene layouts. Layout of holes is pretty tight and you end up having to cross another fairway to get to the next pad a few times. Can also be confusing for first timers, a hole layout and next tee signs would be a great addition. Course is pretty short, but makes up for it with aesthetics and tight holes and elevation changes providing a good degree of challenges. Overall a great course, a few minor improvements would turn this course from average to excellent.

Great place 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 2, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

great place
i only played here while first learning to play
my reviews probably would be different now that i can play a lot better
If in SC i would definately make a stop here to get in a round or two

Cons:

Not much to complain about. I see people out there doing maintenance so it is well kept. Not a lot of traffic but maybe it could be a bit more challenging.

Just playing through 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 5, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great mix of ups, downs, lefts, and rights, not any tight doglegs though
Some open fairways as well as some tight ones
Very well maintained, didn't see any trash
Hole No. signs with footage
Concrete pads
Nice players on the course

Cons:

Wish they had signs designating which basket goes with which hole, only a problem as it was my first time playing and the holes are fairly close together.
Many fairways and tees are very close together, so be mindful of other players.

Other Thoughts:

Played the course quickly on my way through town but was very impressed. Ample parking and a great mixture of different holes. Had a great time and would definitely play it again if I go through Columbia again.
